    The original 1988 sportster needle is what you want to put in your bike. Reason being for that year only there was no accelerator pump so the needle was much richer. Here is the part number (N65C, HD #27094-88) No need to shim. Also by following his procedure you will be running at best optimal performance with air cleaner and pipes great video great explanation!

    I did exactly what you said to my wife’s sporty . Wow what a difference on the outcome. Her bike runs like a striped ass ape! Thank you so much for your expertise. Watching you hands on and explaining in detail what to and how to do it. You saved me Happy wife happy life.

    Thanks Brian. Thought I'd never get rid of the carb farts. I tore out the parts from the SE jet kit and went back to stock parts with your mods. My 1997 Sporty 1200 runs better than new. Open air cleaner and straight pipes with reversion cones.

    • @dankelly2403
      @dankelly2403 7 лет назад

      I saved all the stock parts after I had installed a Screamin' Eagle jet kit. I went back to those parts and used the washers which were in the stock setup or had come with the SE kit. In Brian's video he mentions the approximate washer thickness and type of washer.

    Finally finished these modifications on my 2003 super glide. Carb had some aftermarket parts (plastic slide, crazy thin needle, short spring). I was having some slight throttle backfired through the carb. Ran a 190 main and a 48 pilot. RUNS perfect now. Thank you for laying this out so simply.

    Good video and information. I remember in the early '90's people were taking nearly new CV's off to install S&S and mikuni's. I bought up a bunch of take off CV's as they are my favorite. I have them on everything. A CV really made my old ironhead a one kicker when warm and it runs very good for a 44 year old bike.

    Thanks Brian. I followed your instructions from this video and my carb works really good now. I was having all kinds of issues before and could not get my carb to run the way it's supposed to. I had a grin from ear to ear when I fired it up for the first time after these mods. It breathes like an athlete and I gained so much power. Thanks again. I wish I could buy you a beer.

    Just done this mod to my twin cam. What a difference. Wish I'd seen it before wasting £60 on a dyno jet kit. Which I've now removed .The only thing I used out of the dyno kit were the two small spacer washers to go under the standard needle! Brilliant instruction. Greetings from West Wales. UK. Mike.

    I just installed an OEM CV carb on my 2001 Stock FXDXT-Sport with all the mods, adjustments and replacements recommended on this video. Bike started immediately and beside the idle being at 1600RPM, there was absolutely no need for any further adjustment. The bike runs very strong with no hesitation, popping and farting and is ready to go at a breath of pressure on the throttle - Thanks for the best CV Carb video on RUclips!

    Brian, thanks for your video. My '02 nighttrain was finally giving me troubles starting as my 10 yr old battery finally needed replacing. So I had no start/no idle issues. Your video was tremendous for helping me get the carb parts reassembled and having it running nicely again. Once I saw your details like filing slide and the pinhole to atomize, I knew I'd get it running again. Also, knowing about the pilot/slowjet removal got me able to clean it out and good as new. Thanks

    1 thought this was the best, straight foward video and because you did not state the measurements in 1000th of an inch, bore... but know you make it look simple but it's a tedious task. Brian. Great step by step.
    Got a 88 cv HD carb that has gotten the full rebuild with stock parts.
    Installed on a xlh 1974 1000cc. with stack 2'' air cone, 2-1 exhaust
    rebuild engine with 0.40 oversize piston 8-1 comp.
    Slow 48, main 190
    I can only run with 48 slow, anything below that kills the engine, but runs great with the choke on. It still stumbles and dies with Slow48 at a 1000rpm. So need to have it at a high idle 1500rpm. Tried Slow 42-44-45-46-48. You might be able to give directions befor i spend 250 bucks on a bench test.
    regards

    Looks like it's been awhile since Brian Thomas has checked this but I'll take a chance.
    I have a stock 1997 Heritage Softail Classic with Screamin' Eagle slip-ons and K&N air cleaner. I just bought this bike out of California (low elevation) it has 15,000 miles. I live in northwestern Nevada (east side of the Sierra's) at 4750 elevation and ride that elev. to sometimes over mtn passes up to 8000 or more elev. I will eventually tour out of area and hit lower elevation as well.
    Pilot jet is a 45, main is a 175. Throttle seems kind of sluggish about mid throttle, response is about the same. PS, thanks for the great video.
    ps, I need to do this

    This is for stock motors with air cleaner and pipes only. Big bore,cams,heads... Requires different methods. Thing to remember. Carb's are good low and mid or mid and high usually. If going big motor, go with a Mikuni flat slide to relieve this problem. Thanks!

  • @Oldetownecycle
    @Oldetownecycle  11 лет назад +1

    Hopefully with my late reply you have it going. I would actually recommend going to a Mikuni flat slide also or larger CV. I didn't see ignition module in your list which will definitely be a problem. Also be sure the VOES is working, Quick check is disconnect the purple wire going to it under left of tank usually and idle should drop.

    Hope to not sound stupid but when I pulled my carb apart on my 03 xl1200C the main jet was a 160 and I may have misunderstood as to what the XL or EVO should have but I assume I have an EVO motor being an 03? I performed all the steps in your video and the bike is much better at idle and off idle now, just seems to not pull as hard on higher end and I wonder if I should put a 165 main in instead of the 160? Thanks for the awesome video, it really makes me want to ride my bike more...Phil

    • @Oldetownecycle
      @Oldetownecycle  9 лет назад

      Tamara Jotblad Tamara, You definitely need to know of the motor work. The Carb would need to downed definately although with a shovel this might be good to help save the valves. Shovels are best run rich to extend top end rebuilds due to archeich design and rear cylinder starvation . Unfortunately I can't tell you what Jets to run.

    Very clear and succinct presentation. So much info in a brief video; I think I felt my brain melt just a little. Curious about jet sizes at elevation. I live at ~5,350 feet and sometimes ride in mountains over passes that are 10,000 feet. Haven't had any problems with jets currently installed (1993 HD XL 1200 modified by HD mechanic while in for service when I first moved here 14 years ago). Just wondering?

  • @ronfor0603
    @ronfor0603 4 года назад

    Hello first of all I wanna say that I am o novice on the subject, and second excuse my bad English. To my question. I just bought a 1998 Dyna Wide with the Evo motor, the motorcycle is in extremely nice condition, but there is one thing that I didn't like. First the pipes V&H Short shots, they look fine almost new, but it's way to loud. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound but it's to loud. And I think the idle was not in tuned, so I open up the carburetor just to see if someone messed with it. The main jet was 190 and the other small one (don't remember the name) had number 48 stamped on it, and there was two shims on the needle. When I looked at your video, it sounded like my carburetor is set up for a twin cam motor. One of the reasons I open the carburetor was that my spark plugs vas very sooty (black) do you think that the jets set up is the reason for this? Do you think I should go for the 165 and 45 jets with these pipes on. Don't know if the filter that's on K&N is the original? Or should I by an even more open filter and keep the jets that's on right now? Sorry for al the questions l, just wanted some advice frome someone with experience. Regards /Ronnie (Sweden)

    I know this question is a little late but I'll ask it anyway. Do you know if the CV carbs on the Buell bikes that came with the sportster motors. Did Eric Buell do any modifications to the CV units that the factory released to the public on his bikes. The reason I'm asking is I can't find any one that can answer that .

    Brian! I have a Keihin CV carb from a -91 Sportster which is flooding like crazy through the overflow outlet. I've cleaned and changed gaskets and inlet valve needle. Set the floats properly 17,5-18,5 mm on a 20 degree surface. The seat seems fine where the inlet valve needle goes down. I have blown air through the gas intake and lifted the floats and its shuts fine. What could be wrong?

    Thanks Brian, your videos are excellent and never any bullshit. You also helped with cam install on evolution. One question, should main jet be changed if I put in Andrews EV13? I'm about to start carb rebuild. I also picked up Sportster needle. I have .025 shims AKA #4 brass. So, use 2 of these washer/shims?

    Off topic slightly but I’m sure you’ll have the answer - with with this mod, SE air box and exhaust would you keep the baffles in for back pressure? Cheers, James. UK

    Nice no bull chit vid. Hope you make more.
    If you do could you take that carb and do the J B WELD on the manifold
    for use on an old shovelhead?
    What needs to be done diffrently to put a CV on a 75 shovel?

    Nice vid Brian, hey how do you feel about those thunderslide kits? Are they a waste of money? I'm already planning on using your method, but just wondered how you felt about them.

      And one more thing Brian, I've heard of guys getting slide flutter after modding their CV's. Has your method ever led to this that you know of?

      They are fine with mild motor work but for just exhaust and a air cleaner mod is great.

    hmmm I have a nokk needle in mine, drilled slide and a 45/185. It runs pretty good but the plugs are obviously rich with black around the probe, so I originally should have a 165 main? My book said 180main for a 01 1200c sportster

      I tried to note in video all different mains for years. Pending location and years changes, this is a wide span. The main is not the issue as much as the needle and the slow jet. The main changes are mostly California and HDI differences with some specific models as well.

    I did the two washers on the needle only, it kicks 20% better. Would like more if any?

    I know this is an old thread but I have a 95 883 converted last year to a 1250 (NHRS) kit with cams, 2:1 exhaust, hi-flow AC. CV Carb has 45/180 for jetting with older style needle and mixture screw kit turned out 2.75 turns. Haven't checked the float yet. Last summer ran great. Now it bogs down when giving it fuel. Cleaned jets and carb, new fuel - still bogs. WTF

    Looking to do the same to a 1992 FXR super glide, do we use the same jets for this ???

    I am putting a cv carb on my 74ci shovelhead... do you recommend the same mods or will I need to run different jetting for the smaller motor? I believe the motor has head work and cams but I am not positive
