  • This was/is heartbreaking. As I said in the video. "This is not a song, this is a history lesson".
Archie Roach sang his peoples history, and by that also every other indigenous peoples song. It has been the same all over the world and it hurts just as much everywhere.

By accident I came across your channel. I had put in the search box, reactions to Archie Roach. I am in tears of both sorrow and joy in response to your reaction. Im also Aboriginal - First Nation and related to Archie although extended. I use to sing in a band called Djaambi and Archie and Ruby were our support during times of patrons going to the bar. That was decades ago and it is no surprise that Archie has become a National Treasure in Australia. His song writing and singing is both genuis and compassionate. In fact they are both exceptional writers in their own right. Like Archie I too am Stolen Gen, as its policies extended in Victoria up until 1970. I was born in 1966. I am not whole by any means. Neither is any of my siblings, and Parents. They are now deceased. My father died at 38 from a broken heart, in my opinion. No Fixed Abode was the reason. No fixed home despite the fact we were shunned from rentals, paid less and not welcomed in their neighborhoods. My parents worked in manual labour, both of them and we all travelled with the work. Instead of supporting my family they tore us apart. Irrevocably. You can never mend what is torn and fragmented. its only pieces that come back, never the whole and never what should have been, We were abused in the homes and foster care. I was 2 when taken. Oh and yes the State Govt has recently acknowledged the profound impacts of their prior policies and is granting each of us - now only 1,200 individuals, a form of compensation to the tune of $100,000 each. What am I to do with that. Pay for more counselling I suppose. Anyway this is too long. Thank you for your deep insights and compassion. Keep well my brother. Wurruk, from Gunditjmara country. : )

My dear Charki. What can I say? I am impressed with you, your realtives and the entire First Nation peoples unbelivable strength. You where reduced to nothing by a paper but managed to survive and keep your culture alive for hundreds of years. No compensation can justify what you as a people and single humans have gone through. All nations First People have had it the same way all over the world... It's a total shame and some places this still happends today.
I am honoured to have read parts of your life story and all i can offer is a HUGE hug from me. Words on the street is that I have the best hugs around, so hopefully it can give you a spark to brighten up life a little bit 💕

Little did I know in the early 2000s did I know that the Govt would steal my child too. You would wake up in the middle of the night crying for years. This song saved me, I could relate to it on a profoundly deep level. I played it many times over the years. Until your child has been stolen, you can never understand the sorrow, grief and despair. I have just listened again to this song and it is so special. Thankyou Archie, Thankyou for being my saviour.

Thank you for your very real reaction. This song always brings me to tears. One of my dearest friends (who had a white father and an indigenous mother) was taken before she was two years old. It was not until her late 30s that she discovered her heritage. She discovered where she came from and returned to the community. Without a word of a lie, she walked in unannounced and one of the elder woman walked up to her and said: "We've been waiting for you to come back." You are correct, it was not the children who came back, but the adults return. She has become very active in bridging between the two worlds she is belongs to and was part of the Victorian delegation who attended the meeting at Uluru that produced the 'Statement from the Heart' which is the Indigenous folks call for understanding, reconciliation and a Treaty.

This happened in my family, the mum lost her kids and died of a broken heart, their dad re-married and had more kids, eventually all the kids got together. Somebody else I know was in the stolen generation, got a few thousand in the lawsuit. Should have got more just in withheld wages, but the gov't said no they'd be bankrupted. Not all kids were old enough to know were they were from, they were forbidden to speak their language, taught to be housemaids and stockmen, then sent out to work, only given part of fheir wages, "so they couldn't drink it all." Disgusting idea by the gov't, only stopped in the later years of last century. They had no immunity to white man diseases, a lot died after the first ever meeting.

Unfortunately, it didn't just happen to kids from families with substance abuse problems. They would come into communities and start snatching kids at random as well. While as far as I know, it's never been illegal for a white person to marry an Aboriginal person. But it could be extra heartbreaking if something happened with the white spouse.
That's why three of my second cousins became victims of The Stolen Generation. Mum's cousin married a lovely Aboriginal lady whom she was great friends with. Her cousin was given terrible career advice to divorce his Aboriginal wife, which he followed. There wasn't any custody suite. They came and took her children away from their heartbroken mother. The youngest of those second cousins of mine told me about the state he found his mother was in when he came back to her. She was prematurely grey and dying in a hospital bed. Unfortunately, all three of them have passed away now.
