Uncle Archie - always tells the truth, but does it in such a clear and understandable way it goes straight to your heart. He was a shining light and is very much missed.
You need to check out Kev Carmody. Another indigenous singer songwriter with an incredible life and incredible legacy. Was working as a drover from 13 and didn't release his first song until he was in his 40's. I rate him as probably our best songwriter period.
Always full of passion , always full of Truth , always willing to shine the light - he's brilliant.
2 songs to get you started would be.
'Thou Shalt not Steal' - he speaks the truth and of the hypocrisy. His first single and still one of the most powerful.
'Droving Woman' - an epic story of what a life time of love truly looks like.
But his catalogue is deep and there's not a bad song amongst them.
Thanks Didi for championing these wonderful artists.

G'day mate great reaction. Didy thank you for respecting Archie and his music and thank you for having so much empathy for this dark and sad period of my country.

Yes. I also reacted to this reaction. I wished to add to my reaction but when I looked again, it was not there. I did my reaction again and saw it appear but checked again because of what had happened and it had dissapeared. I don’t know why this should happen - but it has and it shouldn’t have done so.

Hi my dear Kathy💖 I'm sorry to hear that your comment is missing. There has been many cases like yours where people have put down comments on my reactions and their comments has gone missing. I can promise you that the only comments i manually remove is comments with links to certain websites. Everything else removed I can't explain.

Thanks Diddy, for being respectful and i hope you may notice how many first peoples have and do comment so much about respect this is because it is used so much in our lore and respect will and can bring everyone together again on the Earth. How can we love, care, guide, nurture for example without respect and the sooner we realize we are all brothers and sisters and look after our big Mum the Earth. And all together again one big family and once this happens abundancy will come with true happiness. keep the fire burning in your heart brother

The music of Archie Roach, in particular the song Took the Children Away, woke a lot of white aussies up, even those that were already woke.
And this song is similar but as you say it's about Ruby Hunter, Archies' soulmate and musical partner.
I wanted you to know that Ruby had a very unusual and totally phenomenal voice. One of her songs is Down City Streets. Check out her live version.
Archie covered it after she left us.
I also wanted you to know that those songs, characterised by nasty conservatives in our country as "black arm band politics" aren't the only songs he is loved for.
He also wrote about hope for the future and about being redeemed by country/land/place.
I think my favorite song is Get Back To The Land. At one level solace from heartbreak but from my understanding of you Diddy, I think that you'd totally get that it's also about finding nurture from the land and solace from every heartbreak really.
There is a superb live version, hard to beat Archies voice but ... There is also the recorded version with Emma Donovan singing with Archie. And after he left us, there is a very nice homage to Archie by Emma Donovan and Teskey Brothers, the first being a beautiful indigenous soul singer and the later a very popular and also talented blues band.
I also want to recommend a documentary/excellent concert of Archie & Ruby called Wash Your Soul In The Rivers Flow. I saw it years ago on our national broadcaster and apparently it is still available on streaming services. I think it's about time I considered trying out the steaming services coz I really would like to see that again.
One of the things I think I remembered from that movie, or somewhere else (?), is Archie speaking about when he was placed from the Salvation Army mission to a home where his foster parents were Scottish and that's where he learned the guitar and celtic folk music. And he also talked about the Salvation Army Band he grew up with and their big brassy sound.
I wonder about the fun and joy he exhibited in those tunes that were full on with the military cymbal bashing stuff and were they Salvo inspired? One of them must of been a thing he did with a mate Uncle Jack Charles (not a singer but a an actor of renown slash cat burglar) I saw it on Vimineo which I can no longer access. They were having fun but as I remember it - I think there was a bit of irony. Yes blackfellas in Australia are very very good at irony - far far better than the english who claim ownership of this comedic device yet have seemed to have lost the knack for it.

Thank you again Kathy for so much information. You're like my encyclopedia and I love it 💖
I am totally aware that Hope, future and healing of the Nation as a whole was, and still is a huge part of uncle Archies legacy. It is really nice that todays artists are performing his songs, and with artists as Emma Donovan and the Teskey Brothers it means a lot.
Thank you also for mention the documentaries, I have written them down and are excited to see if they're avaliable on my hemisphere 😊
I will for sure keep an eye out for Uncle Jack Charles too since I love me some really good and original comedy.
I Thank you so much Kathy for sharing all this with us, it is really appreciated 💖💖

@@didymalgia No Jack Charles wasn’t a comedian but an actor - stage more than screen. Story goes that he was caught out robbing a place by the inhabitants - they recognised him because they’d seen him in a play the previous night. They didn’t call the cops but asked that he left their home off his list in future. He was still a funny guy though.
