  • In this video we're comparing Warumpi Band and Christine Anu, and their renditions of My Island Home. We wanted to explore the music of the indigenous people of Australia, and we were given this suggestion just days before Australia Day, so we figured we'd check it out now. This should be an interesting experience for us. Enjoy!

I traveled Australia on many occassions in my life, and have stayed in rural areas. Places that look very much like the scenes in this video. Warumpi Band's version is what I heard first back in '87, and I feel it a lot more than Christine's version. I respect her effort and where she took the song, but the first feels more personal to me.
    RIP George Burarrwanga
    RIP Gordon Butcher
The singer and the drummer, respectively

@@SPKdesign1 There are some hot places, but it does depend on the time of the year and where yo go. I think the best time to visit Australia would be around Autumn to Spring (Marc to September). It's the summer that can be ridiculous, though we have had a few grey and windy days lately and only patches of hot days. So, I can't even confirm if our summers are all hot. From my own experience, you can find seasons that are tolerable and void of heat. The rural and desert areas, particular high tourist areas like the Northern Territory are the least likely to get cool, but there are plenty of other places around the country that where the weather is tolerable and even cool at times. Tasmania and Melbourne are places with the most European friendly weather, though I think I might be selling Australia short by only referring those areas. It's definitely a rewarding country if you can tolerate some areas with ridiculous heat.

For me, it's the Warumpi Band, and clearly ! .. The feeling in the vocals is extremely touching, and even though I'm not aboriginal / indiginous, listening to it can often make me emotional .. Christine did a nice, easy to listen to version, but there was nowhere near the depth of feeling and yearning as in the original .. Thanks for the reaction guys.👍

I used to see Warumpi Band around 1984/85 at Surry Hills in Sydney. They're an Aussie band you cannot accuse of being derivative of anything from Europe or America. It was pure Aussie and George Burarrwanga would use two boomerangs as percussive instruments by clapping them together. A great band and a great song.

I didn't know that it was originally by another band from Palumpa, Northern Territory which is a very small community of around 400 people (think around the desert region) about 200km from Alice Springs (which is the closest town to Uluru). Absolutely beautiful country out there!!!!

Warumpi Band.. Might be odd to say that guitar, bass and drums is the sound of rural Australia, but when George starts singing, it's the voice of real Australia imo. Christine Anu is fine, but as nice as her voice is, it still just sounds like everybody else in the pop market. The melancholy in George's voice is a lot more soul stirring and is thought provoking. Like my mate Hayley (Countdown kid), I've also traveled around Australia and this song really does remind me of those long drives along Nullarbor Plain.

Christine Anu (born 15 March 1970) is an Australian singer, songwriter and actress. She gained popularity with the cover song release of the Warumpi Band's song "My Island Home". Anu won an Aria for Best Female Artist and has been nominated for 17 ARIA Awards Anu began performing as a dancer, she studied dance at NAISDA (the National Aboriginal And Islander Skills Development Association) established by Carole Johnson in Sydney. 1980-1987: Career beginnings and peak
The Warumpi Band were formed in 1980 in Papunya - an outback settlement about 240 kilometres (150 mi) north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory - as a country and Aboriginal rock group. Neil Murray was a Victorian-born schoolteacher and labourer who was working in the region Warumpi Band built up a loyal following in Sydney's northern beaches pub rock scene, and played as a support act to Midnight Oil. Peace out.

They're both sincere and mean what they're singing. I can get lost in Christine's version, but Warumpi Band feels a little more true and personal and silent. Silence is something you get to know when you live in the country and more desserted areas.

I really find it hard to split this one. C. Anu gave this song a very modern feel, but the original by Warumpi Band really had some feeling behind it, particularly about living in the desert around Alice when you come from the islands. Both great.

I much prefer the original. Neil Murray wrote this song and after the Warrumpi Band did some solo work. I have his CD "Calm and Crystal Clear"
This is off "Go Bush" which I have on vinyl LP, and the preceding "Big Name, No Blankets”
(You had “Solid Rock” by Goanna, and I have Shane Howard’s vinyl single “Back to the Track”).
Also on vinyl I have "Koonibba Rock" by Coloured Stone, and "Homeland Movement" by Yothu Yindi (before they were popular). Coloured Stone were known for their song “Black Boy”.
2-JJJ (FM radio station - owned by the government and playing alt. rock) had a weekend radio show "The World Music Show.” They released compilation CDs of 'world music’ such as “Earthcore 1”, “Eartcore 2” etc.
I found it odd that on one is an Indigenous act - Sunrize Band and their song “Lembana Mani Mani” which is done in a Reggae style. I found it odd that an Australian band would be on a ‘world music’ compilation and not on a compilation of Australian bands.

Warumpi Band could be mind blowing live. They were something you had to see, because George (singer) could really lose himself in the music and create an atmosphere. Certain circles gave them exposure, but they weren't destined to be a Countdown act, and thank God for that. I seldom watched Countdown after 1982, so I can't confirm whether they did the show or not.
I'm pleased Christine Anu injected the song with pop juice, but I'm gonna have to give it to Warumpi Band. I just loved their minimal approach to rock music at the time. A terribly unnoticed band with plenty of great music to offer. Black Fella White Fella I recommend.

Heard the Christine Anu version first decades ago and never knew it was originally done by someone else. But have seen the original a couple of times and as others say it just feels more personal for that band. Kind of reminds me of the Whitney Houston song she famous for but actually find out it Dolly Parton's song and when see her sing it you can feel how personal it is a song by her and it makes more meaningful to hear the original sung how it was intended to be sung. Nothing wrong with the cover as Christine Anu clearly has a nice voice but the original actually makes me feel what the song is about so I actually prefer the original now that I heard it a couple of times. By the way, was Christine Anu in one of the Matrix movies or is their an actress that just reminds me of her in it?

So both George and Christine are first nations people but from their respective but very different cultures and different island homes that come under umbrella of Australia also island. Also Christine used to be backup singer for band that toured with warumpi and last of all the writer of my island home was neil murray the white guy in warumpi band and wrote the song for George - cheers and thanks for covering great aussie song by great aussie artists.
