lol me and my buddy threw 1200, which means 4 straight games of strikes I finally beat him in the 5th game, 4th frame he left a standing 5, I cleared. and won the bet.
Thanks! I was taught that same throw! Only using the two fingers and no thumb. It’s crazy the amount of hook it makes. It’s pretty much bowling out from over the left gutter, rolls out to the right, and hooks before nearing the right gutter. So much fun!
As a league bowler myself I dont.use my thumb & when I plant my ball usually down the 2nd & 3rd mark & yes my ball has a wicked hook & the only time I use my thumb is when.im working on my spares 🎳
I taught myself how to hook the ball, and I agree no thumb is the way to go. Only downside is when you want a straight throw, it feels awkward to use your thumb, and depending on your handedness, the 7 and top 10 pins can be very difficult to spare. I'm right handed and my strategy for the 10 pin is to start far left and do the lightest hook so it rides the right gutter. Honestly I'd prefer a 5 10 split or a 1 to 10 split than 10 solo.
@@PrinceTrexus if you’ve ever watched 2 handed bowlers, it’s a matter of using both hands and the releasing hand is always under. There’s a way to make a pendulum swing without having the hand underneath, it’s by cupping the ball from hand to bicep.
I’m in high school bowling and I started last year so I’m still new and just learning, all these helpful things make this so much more fun to try it out. I really thought since I was new and so bad I would annoy my team by getting low scores but everyone is accepting in this sport and gives me confidence as I see myself improve. Hopefully I hope to be able and get a 300 and helping newer bowlers cool tricks.
Of all the tutorial videos I’ve watched, this one is the best. I learned so much from only watching a 6:53 video. Thank you so much for posting this! It helps me a lot!😊
I grew up in a bowling alley while my parents bowled in a league every Wednesday , Amazing sport and a nice place to have a good time and eat and drink .
Hi, just wanna say thanks for making this video. I have never been able to spin/hook the ball until i watched this video. I had to resort to using just 2 fingers. Scored my 2nd highest game tonight of 171, would have been my best if I could have picked up the spare in the 10th frame. Thanks brother!!!
haha, i played last night, unlimited bowling.. i dont normally hook it but i started trying to work it out last night.. i was able to look a hook last night, kinda.. and i got one strike with it.. i wanna be able to to it consistently.. this vid is pretty good
Higher end balls hook/curve so much easier. I tried my uncles ball and it takes such little effort to make it hook/curve a lot. Crazy how fast I learned and got good at curving the ball in one night. Never tried curving because it looked difficult but I told myself to try and now I know how to. Got my score from 70-120 to 171. Curving is more consistent.
Great tips. Went bowling for the first time in many years last week and I finally taught myself to spin. But now I can actually refine it! Going back every week I can since family day is $21 for 3 hours, shoes included!
I have to say, after watching multiple videos trying to understand the release of a hook. This video blew the others away. Mainly, due to a singular focus on the release and the simple way its broke down here. Great video.
I've bowled occasionally since I was a kid, and just kept trying to figure it out on my own. I finally gave up and now I'm watching youtube tutorials. This makes it so much more clear in my head, I was going about it all wrong. Lol.
2:49 This is the best tip I’ve seen for a beginner bowler that wants to hook the ball. I just started. I bought a new ball, had it drilled finger tip and have been struggle to hook the ball. I will use this tip next time I bowl.
Great advice, thank you. Really well explained to someone who bowls very infrequently but as an engineer I found this video easy to understand. I'll apply these techniques today and report back later how I did using them.
Probably one of the best explanations out there. I started bowling 2 handed because I couldn’t hook it one handed, got good bowling 2 handed and actually goofed around with a house ball and learned how to hook it one handed after I got good with 2 lol
Thanks for the explanation. I am not new at bowling, but I have never tried to rotate the ball. I am listening and learning a lot by watching your videos and the PBA Bowling tournaments on TV. Thanks again!!!
I started bowling at 12 years old taught myself how to hook the ball but also got tips from the owner of the local proshop I did all my business with I stopped bowling 20years ago because had to support family but I finished with a 196 average I bowled a couple pro-ams here in Connecticut in Milford and Windsor locks and got to meet some of the best bowlers in the world Robin Romeo, Walter Ray Williams Jr. Ameleto monticelli, and my all-time favorite Pete Webber.
Hi i just want to say thank you so much for this tutorial informative video, next Sunday, I'm going to play bowling with my Family and relatives and thanks for this video, I'll be sure to remember the steps as i want to try curving the ball for the first time and this video is highly informative for me so thank you so much
Such a simple, useful explanation of the fundamentals. Thanks! I am sure this will help a lot of beginners, and even some of us who have bowled a long time but are still sort of beginners :P
My wife, at 62, is taking her first lessons. One thing the coaches told her is that due to the arthritis, rather than starting with the hand under/ behind, start toward the side. This adjustment worked great for her. She is now curbing the ball more than she ever could before. The coaches are USBC cert too. Great way to learn or improve one's game.
This is the best tutorial I've seen so far regarding hook balls. I don't want to go back and recite how I hired a coach 20 years ago to teach me how to hook, but you nailed it.
Nice video! My cousin who was like still young played bowling for only 3 times and when he bowled on his 4th time, he somehow hooked and curve! I was surprised by what he did and I was told that hooking and curving at the same time is for professionals. Now I wanted to learn how to hook and curve on a house bowling ball and I saw this video! This video helped me a ton, and I can finally hook and curve!
see… i actually needed this, but i never planned to look it up. I always wanted to know how to curve a bowling ball because I always saw my brother curve his ball, no he doesn’t have his own ball
We bowl weekly and enjoy practicing the hook/curve mostly without using the thumb. Lighter balls hook sooner and speed is only affected by the amount of hook put on the ball combined with the weight of the ball. I.e. When I use my 16lb ball it roes slower and hooks toward the end whereas; my 9lb ball goes faster and hooks about half way. There's a lot of options to practice with. Every week is a new experience and we're HOOKED!! ;)
5th tutorial video of the night and this is the best one sadly I work at an alley and I know nothing but I appreciate everyone that worked on this video because you taught me mucho.
My bowling coach posted this on our gc and encouraged us to watch. I have a really nice Radical incognito ball so I dont really need this but this is great for the other bowlers that don't have balls.
I bowled a ok backup ball so I bought a right-hand ball had never rolled or tried to hook a right hand ball after watching your video it has helped me so much I did bowl a 196 thanks 👍
I have been bowling for nearly 25 years and it was first explained to me, in order to get the ball to spin, is to imagine as if you were preparing to shake someone's hand. That has stuck with me this whole time.
Good drill to reinforce the hand rotation at the bottom: get a mini-Nerf football, and throw underhand spirals, but without flaring your elbow away from your body. Also promotes releasing the thumb first, then lifting and releasing the fingers.
Me and a mate basically just tried a technique we heard about maybe 15 or so years ago and that was it. Instead of bowling with 3 fingers like everyone does when they first go bowling, we just used middle and 4th finger, barely in the holes, literally just enough to curl it at the last second. Stand more to the left, bowl slightly towards the right and it curls left into the centre pins. I'm not saying either of us were great at bowling but it took all of about 5 minutes to learn this new technique and we both got over 100 each time. Went bowling 2 weeks ago for the first time in about 8 years, tried that technique and still got it
Casual bowl, usually with mucho cervesas involved, but learned the thumb out method and it has made bowling more fun. Never understood why until your video and your explanation of spin and thumb release. Props!
JR could you make a video about targeting? I have many people questioning what they should look at for their target. More specifically should they look down the lane, the arrows, or possibly the foul like. I think this would be a great informative video for all levels of bowlers. Thanks
Great video sir. im new to abowling leave here in ohio and I suck. I have been watching videos and this is the first one in plain english that explains that spin. thanks so much!! I plan to try this tonight!
When I was a kid (high school) I was in Saturday league and went to district and state a few years. I had a "K-Mart Special" plastic ball (still have it). A Galaxie 2000 I think. I really wanted to develop a hook but was told it was very hard to do with a "full finger" grip, really needed a fingertip. Got the ball plugged and re-drilled as a fingertip. Totally changed my game.
Reallly helpful information! I went bowling the for the first time in yearssssssss last weekend, was surprised at how I was actually pretty good and how much fun I was having... Now here I am with my own bowling ball watching technique videos so I can start kicking everyone's asses. Without joining a league (yet) are there ways to get a membership of sorts at an alley so I can practice without spending a ton of money or does that just depend on the different alleys?
I've gotten the hook down pretty good using only 2 fingers...i have 4 balls i use depending on the oil/lanes.. but your explanation is really good for me to help those who ask me when watching me bowl how i do it so well. I can average about 200 a night but my style is different...its hard to replicate. This is a much easier way to explain how to spin! Appreciate the tips!
it should be noted that if you have weak wrists holding the ball up in the "cupped" position during the throwing motion before release can be quite difficult and tiring. To remedy this problem get a a couple of dumb bells and practice wrist curls every couple of hours to start strengthening your wrists. It will take some time to develop that strength but in the end it will make it A LOT easier to spin the ball.
Good tip, I’m a carpenter, so I’m guessing my wrists aren’t too weak but I still found the “cupped” position really tiresome whilst trying to flick the wrist with a 13. Dumbell evenings it is 👍
Understanding comes from ignorance. Thanks for the close-ups and the visualizations. Imma gonna try it out. Palm up, thumb out, thanks. I think my thumb holds too big anyway and I'm just learning about tape and its uses. Also putting your thumbnail against the back of the hole versus eagle clawing the ball. Thanks again
If I had a video like this available when I was teaching myself a few years ago, there is a good chance I would not be a two hander today, though breaking my hand had a lot to do with that. Real simple way to put it, maybe I can show others when they ask now. Thanks for posting
What adjustment should i make if the ball is hooking too much? I used to have a decent release but as of recent the ball gutters to left before it gets to the pins. I bowl without the thumb for comfort. Should i release later/earlier, angle myself differently, etc? Thanks!
It's even easier to hook a standard ball if you learn to throw it two-handed (I would recommend getting one custom fit instead of just using the house balls). Regarding bending your wrist and turning your hand to the side as you release the ball (which he showed in this video at 3:50) while I can do it, it does hurt your wrist and could be really hard the heavier the ball you are using. Again, much easier with the two-handed technique (not only is it easier on your wrist because you've got more support, but I've gotten some pretty good hook by exaggerating the release). And if you can find your spot, you can probably score pretty high. Just messing around the other day I scored almost a 170 with my Columbia 300 White Dot (13 lbs). I'm sure if I worked at it I could score even higher with that ball. Anyhow, this was a useful video.
I don't bowl anymore but when I did I was shown how to hook the ball without turning the hand at all. Just by keeping the thumb on the left. The thumb would release from the ball first followed by the fingers, which would put a slight spin on the ball. Starting just a couple of boards in from the right. With the arm following through straight up. I was also told to always bowl the same way, just change your position on the lane for spares.
Best video I’ve ever seen of how to teach a beginner to hook the ball

Such a good video. Instantly makes me want to hit the lanes... (do people say that??)
I don't bowl anymore but when I did I was shown how to hook the ball without
turning the hand at all. Just by keeping the thumb on the left. The thumb would
release from the ball first followed by the fingers, which would put a slight
spin on the ball. Starting just a couple of boards in from the right. With the arm
following through straight up. I was also told to always bowl the same way,
just change your position on the lane for spares.
