I wouldn’t call your security concern paranoia. I’d say you had a valid concern which you were able, through a lot of twists and turns, to resolve. Well dome👍.

Although they're 2 seperate modules, I found it interesting that your remote was effectively communicating with the TDM, but not the RCDLR. When I added a working remote to my 2013 model, it learned to both modules using the DIC method. When I complete my 6E3 delete, I plan to deconstruct the old key in order to determine if there are any electronics inside (I thought they were all housed with the board in the remote. The main reason I had presumed all the necessary VTD components were in the remote, is because the local dealer mistakingly ordered me an incorrect remote that had no lock/unlock/trunk buttons on it, so I figured it only housed the TDM info.

For my 2014 Caprice, it appeared that I did not have either of the two master keys supplied with the car. I purchased lock cylinders and the remotes from a local 2017 Caprice in a wrecking yard. At that time, I had not read enough about the RPO 6E3 key configuration. It ended up the 2017 also had RPO 6E3, so the lock cylinders were identical to the ones in my car. The FOB obtained from the 2017 did work with that 2017 car, but of course it did not work with my 2014 since my car never had it programmed as part of the 8 possible remote transmitters for the car.
Here's the key and remote transmitter learning procedures from the 2014 police technical guide for the RPO code AMF (Package of 6 Key and Transmitters). The 2011-2013 are different with regard to at least some of this info, I just don't have that info available to me at this moment. A police upfitter guide for the 2011-2013 should hopefully have more info for those model years.
From the 2014 Police Tehnical Guide:
Option AMF: Package of 6 Keys and Transmitters, includes 6 cut keys with integrated
remote keyless entry (Transmitter are not programmed).
Each transmitter including the two standard with the vehicle, must be programmed
at the same time by the customer or by a dealer at customer expense. Transmitter
programming is not a warranty item. Common frequency keyless entry for fleet
keyed vehicles not available; each fleet keyed vehicle will have a different keyless
entry. See your owner's manual for additional programming information.
      New Key LEARN Procedure
      1. The six RPO AMF keys are pre-cut at vehicle assembly. If a key is separate from
AMF, cut the new key blank to match the vehicle key (master)
      2. Using the master key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF
      3. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key
      4. Within 10 seconds of turning OFF the ignition, insert the key to be learned and
turn ON the ignition. The vehicle has now learned the new key.
      Remote Transmitter learn Procedure
      1. Ignition must be ON and transmission in PARK (P)
      2. Press the TRIP button until the customization trip page is reached.
      3. Press the ENTER button on the enter the customization menu.
      4. Scroll down to the 'Remote Key' menu item and press ENTER
      5. Scroll down to the 'Program' menu item and press ENTER
      6. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK button on the first transmitter at the
same time for approximately 15 seconds. 2 beeps will sound indicating the
      transmitter is matched.
      7. Repeat step 6 for the additional transmitters.
      8. To exit the programming mode, key the ignition to OFF.
NOTE: A maximum of 10 keys may be learned for a vehicle immobilizer (Passkey III+)
with a random key code. Vehicles with the fleet key option (RPO 6E3 or 6E4) may
have an unlimited number of keys learned for the particular option fleet key and
must be learned using one of the original "master" keys.
When programming Option AMF, additional 6 remote transmitters, the original 2
transmitters delivered with a vehicle must also be reprogrammed at the same time.
A maximum of 8 remote transmitters can be programmed for a single vehicle.

My former Chevy SS (Commodore VF / VFII) had the push button start, no trunk lid lock cylinder and proximity door lock/unlock features. The Caprice PPV is a wide mixture of what was in the (US versions) Pontiac G8 and Chevy SS depending on model year and several things were tweaked to accommodate their use as police vehicles. I have a 2013 and was trying to locate the plate you referenced to see if my key might be universal with other vehicles. I was told by cousin Eddie that the auto start feature would probably be disabled and need to be reactivated.

The plate/sticker for the RPO codes for my 14 Caprice is on the bottom side of the trunk lid. The keys/FOBs for the 11-13 are different than the ones for the 14-17 Caprice. I just downloaded a 2013 upfitter guide that includes the 2013 Caprice PPV. It appears the RPO codes are the same 6E3/6E4 for the "Keys Common" (aka fleet key/FOBs). The RPO code for "Remote Vehicle Start" is BTV.

I ordered the FOBs through gmpartscenter.net. The first time I tried to order them, the parts department canceled the order because their system didn't show GM part number 13585687 as a FOB that would work with the 2014 Caprice based on a VIN validation check. I had other GM documents that did show it would work. I contacted them and they said I could place the order and state I didn't want any VIN validation for the part number, but I would be responsible for any compatibility issues. I ordered them a second time and they worked just fine with my 2014 Caprice.

I have a 2014 caprice I've been restoring, and I have no rear turn signal or brake lights... did you run in to this problem, or any information that can help would be much appreciated! Everything else works.as it should

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  4 года назад +1

I have not run into this problem with my 2014 Caprice. The wiring diagrams show that the body control module (BCM) supplies the power to those lights.
      BCM Connector X5 Pin 7 (Gray/White) - E5AM Stop/Turn Signal Lamp - Left
      BCM Connector X4 Pin 7 (White/Yellow) - E5AN Stop/Turn Signal Lamp - Right
BCM Connector X4 Pin 11 (Violet/White) - E6 Center High Mounted Stop Lamp
You may want to remove the front right kick panel and have a look at the connectors and wires that connect to the BCM.
There are a couple of fuses involving the BCM and the things it powers on the driver's end of the dashboard. If you remove that plastic cover there is a fuse / relay layout of that fuse box. There are a couple of fuses that have a description that suggests they involve the rear tail/stop/turn signal lamps.
F1 / BCM 1 15 Amp - E6 Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (plus many others)
      F16 / BCM 3 15 Amp - E5AA Tail/Stop Lamp - Left, E5AB Tail/Stop Lamp - Right, E5AN Stop/Turn Signal Lamp - Right
      F23 / BCM 4 15 Amp - E5AA Tail/Stop Lamp - Left, E5AB Tail/Stop Lamp - Right, E5AM Stop/Turn Signal Lamp - Left
I hope something of that helps you find the problem.

The 2011-2013 is most similar to the Pontiac G8 and I believe there are options for aftermarket FOBs for that vehicle. I don't have first hand knowledge on that topic for the 2011-2013 Caprice. There is a thread on the newcaprice website about converting the OEM FOB to an aftermarket FOB. www.newcaprice.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=958

Does each Each fob have a different frequency even dough it has the same part number ?? Did you reuse your original keyfob along with the new ones?

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  3 года назад

Each FOB transmits using the same radio frequency, but there is a unique identifier transmitted by each FOB and that is what the receiver in the car is looking for are the unique id(s) that it has been paired with to know which FOB transmissions to pay attention to and which to ignore.
I did not use the original FOBs since they had the fleet transponder chip id in them and my objective was to remove any fleet access to my car. That's why I purchased two new master FOBs. The locksmith used his scan tool(s) to clear all of the previous FOB transmitter ids (sent by the FOB to lock/unlock/open trunk/remote start) and transponder chips (used by security system to allow engine to be started) as well and then he added the two new non fleet FOBs for use with the car.

Thank you for your time sir.

I don't believe the 11-13 Caprice FOBs are interchangeable with the 14-17 Caprice FOBs. The 14-17 have a center cut blade key and I believe the 11-13 are not center cut blade keys. The FOB part number for the 11-13 appears to be 92237318 which is a totally different unit from the 14-17 FOBs which might even use a different transmission frequency (but I'd need to research that more). The 14-17 being based on the same tech as the Chevy SS (minus the proximity sensor entry system feature of the SS).
I was able to remove the aux battery equipment without setting any DTCs. When I reprogrammed my body control module (BCM) I left the aux battery feature (K5S) enabled. The 14-17 has four user selectable config options and the aux battery feature is one of them. I left it enabled because the aftermarket backup camera harness I added to my 2014 Caprice was sourcing its power from one of the aux battery car side harness electrical connectors. I started having some phantom "Trunk Open" messages occur after opening and then closing the trunk after updating the BCM (updated active features and some of the calibration files). I swapped out the trunk latch but that did not fix it. The BCM turns on the power to the aux battery harness connector, so I decided to go another way for the backup camera power. I ended up sourcing the power for the backup camera aftermarket harness from the fuse box in the trunk. I then updated the BCM to deactivate the aux battery feature and "so far" I've not had a phantom "Trunk Open" message.

You are truly a talented person. I’m trying to figure out what to do to make my 2 remotes work. I have the codes #13585386 on the transmitters and am not sure if I need that new remote you mentioned or just the BCM reprogrammed at dealer...

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530  4 года назад +2

FOB 13585386 should be able to added to the BCM as a valid FOB (for remote key entry purposes). The 2017 Caprice PPV I obtained the lock cylinders from in the wrecking yard along with its 13585386 FOB had that FOB working with that car. We used the FOB 13585386 in the wrecking yard to unlock the doors because the front door panels were already taken out and there were no buttons to use to unlock the rear doors without using a FOB. That means the specific FOB's transmitter id was one of the known FOBs in the BCM for that 2017 Caprice. The 13585386 FOB I received when I purchased my car was not a functional remote FOB for my car since it appears it was not one of the eight FOBs known to the BCM (at least for remote key entry purposes).
The reason I purchased the two new "master" FOBs was to get away from using any FOB that was associated with the "6E3 KEYS COMMON" RPO configuration option. The theory being the two new 13585687 FOBs would not have the same transponder chip id as the 13585386 FOBs which should mean no person with a 6E3 FOB / key should be able to unlock [which they couldn't any longer since I had my car lock cylinders rekeyed] or use the ignition switch nor should they be able to start the engine. After clearing the BCM's FOB memory and adding only the two new FOBs, the locksmith tried to start the engine using one of the original 13585386 FOBs (which had a new key blade that fit my reconfigured lock cylinders for this test) and the engine immobilizer would not allow the engine to be started.
So, I believe you should be able to have the dealer to add in the two 13585386 FOBs to your BCM. I would suggest having them clear the BCM's FOB memory so that the only known FOBs (for remote key entry purposes) would the two FOBs in your possession.
      I hope that helps!
