Fixing & Setting Nulled HDD Keys for the Original Xbox
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 июл 2024
- Every original Xbox console contains a hard drive with a hard drive key, with the intention of that hard drive being paired and locked to a console expecting that matching key. While a console with a custom BIOS can accept any storage medium and keys do not have to be matching, softmodded and stock consoles running a retail BIOS require a locked hard drive with a matching hard drive key. As these keys are randomized 32 character values, years ago it was determined for safety and ease of use that you could "null" a hard drive key to 32 0's. This means anyone who is aware that a lock hard drive's key has been nulled can unlock it easily without the console's EEPROM backup, and hard drives can even be swapped between consoles expecting nulled hard drive keys!
Unfortunately it was discovered that nulled out consoles and hard drives with a key set to all 0's would not work online with Insignia, the much anticipated Xbox Live 1.0 replacement service for original Xbox consoles. However a new practice with all of the benefits of before, but with an added benefit of working with Insignia was discovered: nulling a key to 32 1's! With Insignia's release to the public, and many people looking to resolve their all 0's hard drive key, I made this video to assist anyone who wants to properly null out their key or resolve their previously nulled keys to get back online.

Great video. Used this as a guide multiple times now.
Another excellent Mr Mario video. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I did this exact thing last night on my softmod system! I totally forgot my hdd was 0 nulled until I tried to set up Insignia. Had to google around to a couple of reddit threads showing this tool. Already had DL'd the Rocky5 extras disc from one of your previous vids and used configmagic.
Perfect.
Exactly what I was looking for!
I wish this video came out before I bricked my console's EEPROM doing it wrong lmao
Sorry to hear. If you're dedicated enough, you could use a donor EEPROM or build your own then try to flash that over using a hardware flasher?
Wouldn't installing a modchip fix this? Then you could flash the correct EEPROM once it's booted. I've modded my Xboxes by booting from modchip and then flashing the EEPROM with a custom firmware.
@@OrinSorinson my openxenium modchip is on the way!
@@wallruss5850 "It's aliiiive!" soon.
@@wallruss5850 any update?
Just got an OG Xbox to mod so this is very timely for me!
Perfect!
thank you so much! the congicmagic worked!
I appreciate this video all these years later, I know it's been a thing you can do for a long time but no one's really covered it lol I always had to asked the legend Rocky5 directly about it
Glad it helps 😀
Great vid thanks, exactly what I was looking for. One minor grievance that really bugs me is suggesting that all zero's is null.
Scene terminology!
@@MrMario2011 Cheers! Didn't expect a reply. I thoroughly enjoy tinkering with old tech. Other old farts do puzzles or crosswords, I spent a weekend soft modding an Xbox and today getting it up on Insignia. Rarely play the games!
blowing the dust off the 360 now for another challenge.
Very useful thank you very much!
I just installed my 1tb hdd on a new xbox.
A lot of savegames are not working and to resign them seems a real pain (cannot find any clear guide online).
So, with this I can set the eeprom of the new xbox to the eeprom of the old one, right?
This way gamesaves should work again.
I softmodded last night and I am pretty certain that the latest mod files from rocky automatically set the key to all 1s now. I believe I saw a msg box talk about insignia too so it is definately updated as of recently
Can you make a video on swapping out had if we already backup the eeprom to the pc? I can’t find any video that takes a new hdd and uses a pc with the backup eeprom to swap it over. Everyone does chimp loader. Hope that makes sense
Question when it comes to insignia, is there a file or files on the hdd that store the settings? Am not sure I trust the hard drive that is in the box right now and would suck to loose the gamer tag associated with it.
What do you if your machine is producing error 06 and I don’t know what my eprom number is
Please help me. I softmodded my xbox and was working fine i backed up eeprom to pc, but i had not yet unlocked hdd or installed custom dashboard etc or chimp. then it froze and I had to reset it and now I get error 7. All solutions i find requires you to be able to boot into your softmodded xbox which i can't because of error.
If you are planning on using you're Xbox on Insignia, do not null your harddrive, we learned the hard way that it then doesn't work with insignia. It is fixable if you have a backup of your EPROM however.
The new method for a few years now due to Insignia is nulling to all 1's, which is confirmed to work just fine online.
Great video. You mentioned rebuilding a drive with the OG HDD Key unmodified, how can that be done?
FATXplorer
A quick question. I modded my system yesterday with Rocky 5 and got on insignia signed up and all that. If I would like to upgrade the hardrive do I have to null it to all 1s. Would that then not allow me to connect with insignia because my system was registered. Or do I change the key to the key of my original hard drive because I used the tool to view it and took a picture yesterday so I do have those numbers saved.
If you already registered then if you change the key you would not be able to get back online until you either change your key back or you have the Insignia team remove your console from registration.
@MrMario2011 so if I reassigned the original key to a new hardrive it would be fine and should in theory work. I copied it down from the insignia installer tool.
@@MrMario2011 So can I then assign my eprom bin to the new hardrive. I would really appreciate it if you would do a step by step vid on this. I am sure there are other people that are in the same position and would appreicate it.
I have a question for you Mr mario. Can i update my softmod with an app like this? cos my OG Xbox optical drive is ruined and i dont have another drive to swap. Thanks for helping us to get into Insignia! It was a long wait but finally we are going to be able to play online!
PD: Making changes to the HDD affects your games save files... at least that what happened to me a couple of years ago.
You would update with something like the Xbox Softmodding Tool updater, I've got a video showing how to update a Softmod.
So my issue is that the hard drive for the system died years ago and another system I have the drive was missing when I got it. How do I read the eprm on them?
Install a modchip or use a tool to dump the EEPROM like PiProm.
Is there any way to install a new HDD to a unmodded system?
Or do i have to softmod first, and then make it like a stock Xbox?
The drive doesnt work anymore and cant acces anything.
Dump the EEPROM with a hardware programmer then use that to build a new HDD locked to the console with FATXplorer
What do I do if I don't have DVD burner? I already have Rocky5, but I don't have option in NKpatcher to do this?
EDIT: There's a ISO version in the G Drive that you mount instead of using the disc.
You figured it out, but yep, I've got a video covering how to mount it.
Hey there Mr. Mario! I ran into a bit of an issue. I unlocked my Xbox HDD without knowing of the ramifications of it, and now it's locked out. It was an Xbox from someone else, and I don't know if they backed up the EEPROM. Do you have a method of fixing that on your channel, or any suggestions?
Either install a modchip on the console with a custom BIOS or you can dump the EEPROM from the motherboard and lock the drive on your PC using FATXPLORER Beta.
@@MrMario2011 I'll look into those options, thank you much!
Hello brother thx for ur Videos its help really much!
But pls stay at ps4 we need more Tutorials/Videos 😀💯💪
i plan to upgrade the hdd in my soft modded system that is registered with insignia. can i use this method to change the key on the new drive so that it will be the same as the old one and work with insignia?
Yep!
I have a non-modded original Xbox but my hard drive is faulty, is there anything I can do to replace it ?
You'll have to mod chip it or read the eeprom and create a new drive with the eeprom info.
Is there a way for me to not lock it to my Xbox cause I want to use my 1.1 hard drive with soft mods on my 1.5 xbox
Only way to do that would be if both consoles have the same HDD key set in the EEPROM.
hi mr mario, i have an original Xbox with 07 error, i did a verification of data cable and jumper everything is ok.I think it's hdd, but my xbox is not softmoded and i don't have hdd key. Do you have any software solution and can you do a tutorial. Thanks in advance
You can refer to error codes here: consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Error_Codes#Error_Code_07
@@MrMario2011 thanks, i will try the different solution
does a tsop count towards a hard mod? I'm running rocky5 and a tsop but no modchip or anything
TSOP flash counts as that's a custom BIOS.
it fails to unlock my hdd i have a switch on the bottom of xbox that if i switch on when i restart the xbox it lets me unlock and relock from there the hdd key is also set at all 000s at present so i do need to go through this option config magic
Config Magic would be your method, yes.
the drive fails to unlock when i do this i have a bank switch on it should i alter that wile trying sorry i bought mine moded and am good at tinkering but the xbox can be compicated
When I run nk patcher it says null key not change eprom hard drive key
Either upgrade your softmod to the latest revision or make the changes using Config Magic.
I just did this on my soft modded box and my HDD key is still the same.
How do I get the original Xbox hardmodded?
I personally learned how to do it myself. Good forums like OGXbox.com or /r/OriginalXbox and brushing up on my soldering helped!
I've never needed to do this on an Xbox I have softmodded and updated the HD.
It's not required.
I just changed the last 0 to a 1 on mine. Insignia works with 31 zeros and 1 one.
Rocky 5 destroyed my modded xbox. Tutorials said it would be fine and it bricked it hard. Now it gives an error code. So bummed.
If you join the insignia discord you might be able to get some support there.
@@beyshadow I will give it a shot
I would recommend keeping your original hard drive incase you mess your xbox up
@@Mike43837 Yeah it was so long ago I have absolutely no idea where it is at. I knew to do it but after 4 moves, that hd is lost somewhere.
@@victimofgoogle it is modded with a chip already.
