Let's Upgrade Another Original Xbox! - GhostCase Crystal Clear Kit, 1 TB HDD, and More!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 дек 2018
- Earlier this year I saw GhostCase kits for the original Xbox being sold for a pretty fair price so I decided to pick one up and install it onto one of my consoles. I decided to not only use this as a video opportunity, but to also take the time to upgrade whatever I could while I had a console open for surgery! That included cleaning up a bit, repasting the CPU and GPU, and upgrading the hard drive a second time from a 250 GB IDE drive to a nice shiny 1 TB SATA drive! This isn't meant to be a tutorial by any means, more of a build log chronicling my experience upgrading this Xbox and talking through it all.
The following modifications were performed on this console:
- 1 TB Western Digital Hard Drive Upgrade
- 80-Wire IDE Cable
- IDE to SATA Adapter
- GhostCase Crystal Clear Kit
- GhostCase LED Kit

29:00 I'm screaming at the video I can see the little plastic piece you broke off
These GhostCases are complete junk, if you even look at them the wrong way they'll crack.
He found it at 38:18.
seeing original xbox modding videos makes me think that i should buy one of these as soon as possible. as a kid, I had a slim ps2 by the 6th gen console era, that was actually one of the only affordable options around that time in brazil (you could find gamecubes cheaper than ps2s in here but you just couldn't find any games for it in a reasonable price). Probably will try to pick one up for sale on ebay and send here, since buying one of those in brazil is as expensive as buying a lt3.0 360.
Really appreciate your stuff, keep it up.
This is like the 4th xbox og video iv seen this year but usually there putting a computer init, kinda nice to see the xbox put inside a mod.... now i want to play Brute Force co-op.
I'm putting a Xbox inside a Xbox, I'll use a proper PC case for a PC 😁
That was long but interesting video! That Case does look really nice.
I still have my modded Xbox from 2005. Soldered in an executor 3. Replaced the 8gb HDD w a 120gb IDE drive. Crystal blue case mod. Felt like I was ballin back in the day, I still play that thing everyday, the retro stuff is a new trend but hell, iv been playing all those old games on the “frost box” since ‘05. Sounds like the HD’s about to die though. Do a video on how to clone those old drives.
Also, great job!
Why not install a SSD?
@@TheNews1990 you can't, the old hardware doesnt now how to use a sad, search it up the old xbox literally acnnot use ssds
@@randomsomeguy156 You can use SSD there are plenty of videos of people using ssd in their boxes
@@jimb1117 hi Jim, quick question of you can help me. Can a 2 TB modded Xbox fit the entire game Library? I'm assuming the Romset would be twice that.
I found one on Kijiji, but I have doubts that every game will fit in a 2 TB drive. Even if they are just North American releases.
Depending on how much work you wanna do, could dim the LED by soldering a small resistor to its power line, Or even better a potentiometer so you can adjust it to your liking.
Or could get even more involved with an LED controller.
hey, just a recommendation : for that ultra bright blue led - add a round “diffuser” to the top when you glue it. (similar to the shape of a soda can bottom!) it will serve two purposes, 1) to cover and hide the fact it was glued, and 2) it will shield you from being able to look directly at it when lit. it will still provide plenty of ambient and may also redirect some of it back down into the case to help illuminate all the internals. a solid black piece of flat and round plastic should do just fine !!
Thanks for the tip on the thermal paste! By using a combination of citrus cleaner and alcohol hand sanitizer, I was able to get both the heat sinks and processor surfaces spotless!
Took some effort, huh? Glad it helped!
I did a similar project using a round ide cable and the official clear case, it put some stress on the case but looked much better. For this one I would suggest painting the ide cable black instead though. Also heat shrink or braid the molex wiring with black as well. For the LEDs i used an led molex powered strip that i stuck all the way around the edge inside of the case which makes a much brighter and less condensed experience.
I remember de-soldering my X2 for the Xecuter 3CE chip. Back then they had these cool LED screens you could install to the front plate.
That's awesome! At least now you can use the X2 BIOS thanks to a TSOP flash. Those X3 chips are worth a good bit of cash.
@@MrMario2011 I ended up here because I just busted mine out. Halo Green case, dvd window, Xecuter 3 chip with the front panel and screen. Still as dope as it was in 2005
to avoid the cracking issue, you need to "fit" the top shell, plopping it on looks like it fits ok but if its not 100% you get stress cracks like you did, another tip is to only just nipp the screws not fully down but so its not loose then use the xbox, let it heat cycle three or for times before nipping it a bit more, but even then don't crank it down.
Great setup! You can even pet a dog in-between steps to recharge your batteries!
The pets are an absolute necessity.
I have recently bought an xbox for 10€ i have already made the jewel clear and now moving on to the case, not going to order ghostcase because i live in europe and then its like 20 € shipping cost plus normal price . I am going to drill with dremel a hole in the case, then cover with plexiglass, and i already cut the disc drive to format so you can see the disc spin. Nice video
Great videos keep up the good work 148 am in the morning I'm watching you on a big TV lol
You should replace the GPU heat sink with a 1.1+ revision. It’s larger and fanless, so it cools the same but is much quieter.
@Justin Beaird Hey can you share a link on that. That's another issue that I've noticed on mine I'm thinking of just removing the HDD & CD caddies and finding a way to mount maybe a 2.5 inch drive and putting fans directly on the GPU & CPU.
SMSV2008 You need either a component or HDMI cable to be able to use HD
SMSV2008 Yes, those options don’t show up in the menu at all if you just have the regular composite cable (yellow video plug) that came with the Xbox. If you live in the US, I guarantee you that you don’t own any PAL consoles because they require 220V power and the US uses 110V so they wouldn’t even turn on. Composite doesn’t support HD resolutions. You NEED component or HDMI in order to use 480p, 720p, or 1080i resolutions.
SMSV2008 You’re best off just buying this.

@SMSV2008 Hello your answer I think is in this video, ruclips.net/video/qfqUjCrQ1_A/видео.html . I would also recommend following him as his content is vary interesting.
Awesome video. This makes me wanna start modding the consoles I own, lmfao.
The metal shield on the Xbox one is for the WiFi and Bluetooth antenna That would defiantly be a reason for a sorter range on the receiver end..
Use to have a crystal xbox which was super cool, removed top plate like yourself and lid for disk tray, just ended up dropping it one day and pretty sure a solder came lose since lost all video connection nomatter the cord. so never got around to fixing it.
Just got an original Xbox after watching MVG video on retro consoles and homebrew. This video has me doing a rebuild / cleanup / mod before I use it!
Woo!
@@MrMario2011 oops.....I may have just bought an Xbox360 4G (slim with upgraded 500gb HDD). Could you suggest a starting point for modding please?
This retro console thing is getting out of hand - I've bought 7 consoles in the last 3 weeks!
Isopropyl alcohol is usually more then enough for cleaning thermal paste and it dries super quick
Yes but the Artic stuff is made to remove and prep the surface, been using it for years. Unlike the Iso. Alcohol it removes and prevents any oxidation allowing for a better conductive surface.... Though he made me cringe by using a paper towel instead of a microcloth which won't leave fuzz and dust behind and won't add any scratches to the surface.
@@SilvaDreamspaper towel lol hell, i have used a pry tool to scrape those off. It is to soft to scratch it. Just put the old iso or googone and let it sit a bit so it softens up. It will come right off no problem.
In fact the same pry tools are the ones that you get when you buy the ipad screen replacement kits.
1:09:30 great timing on that case crack, damn dude lol
if nothing else if you have issues with interfearence you could always use a fine mettle screen that way you can see the board but have some shielding .
Mr Mario and an original Xbox video...always worth a watch.
Thank you, glowing Xbox.
This inspires me to work on more mods. :]
Dude sick!!
Love your video MrMario!
That's my name!😁
14:44 Lilly knows how to talk in her own way. I don't care what anyone wants to say, your dog is communicating on a whole new wave..
Everyone seems to be getting the old xbox back out again.but can you blame us.nice video buddy.
Still an awesome console! I get more excited seeing advancements in the OG Xbox scene as opposed to Xbox Series X news, haha.
MrMario2011 I agree with you buddy today I'm playing Matt Hoffman pro bmx 2 loving it haha
Back in the day we put LEDs everywhere it was practically a light show LOLBut it looks extremely awesome you should try it
Have you ever tried a 2.5 inch notebook hard drive in the xbox? I have NOT been inside the xbox yet my self but the smaller drive form factor would probably add some extra space for wire management and light placement and what ever else you wanted to shove in there.
I recently unearthed my original Xbox and have been looking for ideas to soup it up a bit. I wonder if a SSD would be worth it in a console this old, especially since I play all my games directly off the local drive since I modded it over 15 years ago
I have been looking for an original Xbox to mod for forever!
They're out there!
Super sick video!
🤢🤮
They only had one left in Amazon I had it on my list to buy as soon as I got payed when I go to get it they had sold it. Now looking at you video you got the last on dude! Lol At least it’s in a good home. Great build 👍🏼
I didn't get the last one, this video was recorded earlier this year haha
MrMario2011 damn lol oh well I’m debating if to get the green one or just wait if they restock. Maybe the green one would look cool too. Man thank you for your videos really have learned a lot from you and the good people on Reddit.
@@MrMario2011 have a source on the video?
Hahahahahahaha i baughy that shit
Lol, I seriously thought the same thing. I was getting ready to buy the one on my list, and it was sold out. Then a week later this video posts. 😁
As usual great tutorial! I have a question do you know how or do you no were i could find a tutorial on how to mod and what brands of pc DVD drive so the Xbox will read it?
This isn't a tutorial.
Love it, but how about using a ultra slim ide cable, and debadging the drives, but nice work.
I purchased my used OG Xbox for $10 and its softmodded. The former owner thought it was broken. I also went to Amazon and I purchased stuff. Thanks.
wat. How did they think it was broken?!
MrMario2011 my bad, I left that out. The dvd drive sticks so bad I have to use my fingers to make it pop out. I’ve already ordered the belts to address that. It still plays games too.
good'ol arctic silver thermal paste.
I use that stuff in every single console repair that required it.
I even offered it at just a few $'s to anyone who had a console service with me, it wasnt much in profits but it brought them back if they had other consoles or friends with them :)
Literally within the last 7 days, i used liquid metal thermal compound on a pc heatsink upgrade on my 2nd pc.
The difference was a drop from 44 Celsius idle with a corei5 to 33-36 Celsius idle.
Ofcourse that's thanx to also installing a Cooler Master Hyper H411R CPU Cooler .. but thru this summer, the pc will be much cooler.
That's awesome, some people rag on AS5 but it isn't bad, there's just better stuff out there. It works well and requires a burn-in period, but it's certainly better than the wattery white mess many cheap ones are.
AS5 is terrible, people don't know the proper way to apply it, and it's capacitive.
You're supposed to warm it up first so it softens up, then apply it.
MX4 is miles better, its runnier off the bat, and since its not conductive or capacitive you can just gloomp it all over. Let alone the fact it performs better.
@@JorgePerez-de5ne Oh definitely, MX4 is Soooo much better (And idiot friendly since it is non conductive so even if someone applies too much they won't fry anything when it goops out)
That and it has a much longer life span, when I rebuilt my PC which essentially ran for 5 years almost non-stop (Other than reboots) it showed no signs of hardening.
Arctic Silver while it was the best stuff around 10+ years ago, it was always a pain in the ass with how liquidy it was
Hey nice case! I was thinking of doing one myself too and I know its unrelated but does anyone know how to update the unleash x dashboard?
The tab breaking off of the front button area isnt exclusive to the company that made the transparent case...I chenged the LEDs in my original xbox once or twice and they also broke. It doesnt really matter, as once the panel is on the case it keeps it held in place.
Good video!!
you ordered a green led, they owe you a green led. That is unacceptable.
I think the light look better underneath the logo.
i had to replace the fan on the gpu in mine but i couldnt really find a exact one with that odd design but i found one that would fit but i replaced my front led's with a blue/red the red side isnt that bright but its likely only gonna be used if there is a problem but i need to eventually get a clear or blue jewel for mine bit in the end i like it i couldnt do the cd part as the xbox i have didnt have one of those drives and if i could get ahold of one i lost the parts to do that stuff to the drive
You could replace the solid metal shielding with a wire mesh etc
hi do you have any idea of what happened to my original xbox coz after the logo flashes , it freezes in a minute then when i try to open a game it says "error: unable to launch: blah blah blah game does not exist..pls help
Is so hard to put the case back when i finish my work can someone explain me what i need to check when i put the case back in place pls?
I set up 3 port on the rain and mounted the usb but unfortunately only 1.0
I've found my Xbox after 15 years in storage is it necessary to replace the thermal paste before using it?
i have samsung dvd drive from og xbox but it doesn't read discs it even doesn't show any read error it only stop spins i cleaned entire drive And it still doesn't reading, can it something wrong on the dvd motherboard? or on the xbox motherboard?
Hey I can’t see a video of the green halo console I used to have one but thinking of case modding mine to a halo theme
It seems pretty hard to make custom cooling for original Xbox. I wish someone could do that.
I have the same Screw Driver from Fujitsu :P
I may not go for the clear, but amazon has a translucent green case, it's a bit more money but I think it fits the Xbox atheistic a bit better. Plus they do sell the green LED as well.
Happy to see they're still being sold at least.
anyone know where I can buy just the clear piece to put in the top of the dvd drive? I have a crystal clear case from the UK.
Any idea on what version is best Mario? I assume 1.0?
Can't find a clear case anywhere just finding a clear green case. And where do I get that DVD mod, the clear piece that replaces the actual top cover of the drive?
Green seems to be the only easy one to find now. Those parts came as part of the kit.
Damn, way to go all out. Now you just need to do the CPU upgrade if you can find a compatible one nowadays. Base CPU clock in Xbox is ~733 MHz I believe and you can max out at ~1.4GHz I believe so this is a significant upgrade. You can also upgrade the RAM. Would be epic to see.
Hardly anyone does them now, and the prices for services and shipping are up there! RAM is common knowledge if you have the skillset, CPU not so much.
Lol, you need a special machine and reball the new CPU
@@JorgePerez-de5ne ??? You just need BGA templates and a rework station. Noting special. LOL!
For the RAM all you would need is a heat gun or soldering iron and flux. None of it would be hard at all regarding the actual replacement/installations of the chips. This "special equipment" can be had relatively cheap as rework stations and templates are sold abundantly online. It is just a matter of locating the proper BGA templates for whatever chip you are trying to rework. Look up some vids on BGA rework and you will be surprised how easy it actually is.
you need one of these.
shuttlestar.en.made-in-china.com/product/HbxnNavMhykm/China-BGA-Rework-Station-RW-E6000-.html
pretty cheap, only a couple of grand
@@JorgePerez-de5ne ROFL. That is for professional industrial use. There are many rework station you can buy for under $200. Come on man...
Dam watching this video makes me want to get an og xbox
Do it!
@@MrMario2011 still got my jtag 360, if i come across an og one ill definitely pick it up
@@THEACERASPIREMAN had mines for years, but my kids are the ones that use it these days, have they really become that rare?
Same, but no idea where i should be looking
Most pawn stores will sell them for $25-50.
Looks good would have been better if the kit came with the back vent piece and a bottom piece
Agreed, it isn't the best kit, but it's something.
Case mod is pretty dope! i just don't like how it leaves the laser exposed. it would be nice if they built a plastic that went all the way across over the disc drive.
I agree! The reason why I was "okay" with this one is because it's a Thompson drive, so I don't mind if I lose one of the worst drives out there. Plus the console is all modded up so I'll rarely be using discs on it.
I know this video is getting to a point where you're probably ignoring the comments but another idea for the harsh LEDs is to diffuse them with some pieces of paper cut to size and glued in place. You could also paint a piece of thin plastic and cut it to size to diffuse the light. Simple, cheap, and effective.
my 2TB mod took over a hour to format lmao like 4 gigs transferred.
Make sure to insulate your sata adapter with double sided tape so to prevent arching against the rear end of the hard drive! Scared the crap outta me!!
I clean my CPUs off with alcohol hand sanitizer gel, works wonders!
Is that IDE cable from eBay seller CablesOnline? I ordered one from them that was bunk as well. Currently awaiting my replacement so I can FINALLY use my 2tb drive.
The one I bought is should be in the description.
@@MrMario2011 you ordered your from HK. Mine came from a US seller. Although the packaging was 100% exactly the same so likely the same OEM. I had the same problem with the constant DVD check. They're sending me a replacement and I ordered another from somewhere else just in case. I'm glad I'm not the only one who experienced that issue. I will advise to keep and eye on the caps on that adapter. Its nothing for them explode or start leaking.
GooGone works just as fast as the Arctic clean. Just let it sit and wipe off. GPU usually only takes 2 times and then you clean it up with alcohol.
Is there also a Ghost Case for the Xbox one S ?
the remover is just goo gone and the purifier is isopropyl alcohol.
I have an old softmodded xbox can you do this to mine do you have a shop or website
I have an original Xbox(Halo edition) with box, papers , controller and the copy of Halo that came with it. How lucky am I ? :-)
Nice! I have the Xbox itself with 4 matching controllers.
Nice. Any tutorial videos to upgrade the Halo Xbox to make it awesome? Been looking for a project.
I'm of the belief that special editions should remain untouched in terms of looks, but the only things I've seen for that specific model have been the X3 parts. Good luck finding a green X3CP for sale, though.
I actually did the technique mentioned in this video today to remove the jewel from my case. Sadly, the case shattered into about 15 pieces. I actually was more amused than upset, but now I have to find a new housing top.
Oh man :(
@@MrMario2011 I can't believe how it shattered! I was showing by wife what I had to do and it just shattered. LOL It was like something you'd see on TV.
Got damn thats alot of paste on the gpu 😁👍. It will be ok, it doesnt look like it is the whole tube. Great job Mario
Oh fyi mario, if your cd door doesnt want to open and getting kinda fussy. Pop that rubberband off and boil it until it forms back into a circle. It is dried out and out of round. The motor is too weak to spin. Sounds sketchy, and i thought so until I seen it done. And it surprised me.

Nope, but a custom BIOS makes HDD replacement easier.

oof
MrMario2011 still thumbs up, nice to see others in the OG Xbox scene.
the ali link doesn't work, can you fix it?
Can you make a video of how to upgrade a hardrive please lol im tired of my 8 gb hardrive
That's in the works.
is the gpu worse because it gets hotter and bakes the pink gum compound, or is it a different, adhesive compound?
I had to use acetone to get it off, it was about as soluble in my usual high purity methanol as car tyres are soluble in rain.
Definitely a different compound.
One of the directions said to use wd40, so I tried. It wiped that stuff off in 2 minutes flat. IPA did nothing for me.
@@troymeredith521 wd40 is good, zippo fuel also works wonders. acetone worked okay too

There is a company that allows you to install a upgraded CPU that runs at 1.5 ghz and has a turbo switch, works on *most* games, unless they speed up , then you need to turn the turbo off. Kicks alot of games fps way up.
Was* I believe the company you're talking about is FriendTech, who hasn't done those mods in a long time. N64 Freak does 1.0 Ghz mods but I don't believe anyone out here right now does 1.4 GHz.
