I have had some of the worst years of my life and many times I felt like giving up. Your videos gave me a new hobby while i was bed ridden. I found a new purpose in life so thank you for these uploads Danny.
Glad these have helped you out on multiple levels 🖤
im legit on the same thing right now, im in the worst 1+ year of my life being stuck in bed, heart pain daily etc and this stuff gives me something to chill and remind me of bette times
@@PuReXtremeGaming Did you take the snake oil?
@@chinering23 yep the first one. Didnt want it either
With the original HDD I bet it's closer to 80db. You can actually hear when things are happening in game. It makes the console sound alive
Absolutely. I swear it makes it sound like someone is dragging something across the floor in another room. The grinding/spinning sound of those old HDD platters is just insanely loud.
I recently got mine out from storage and reinstalled XBMC with the Blades theme. Very nice indeed. I never thought about the fact that 700mhz was actually a lot in 2001 lol. I plan to install a 2tb HDD, to try install as many games as I can. The ultimate system lol
I believe that usually fits the whole OG Xbox library if you omit the yearly sports releases?
@@MrMario2011 Possibly. Recently I attempted to make some calculations, though every time I end up basically going to bed because of the ridiculous lengths of time it takes lol. Also, do you know by any chance if I would require a hard mod to install a certain HDD size? I heard of something to do with partitioning, thx
@@retrojacgaming That's sick
I just want to say I very much enjoy your videos. They are very well done and amazing for reference. It’s helped me get really into modding and I enjoy my consoles even more! Thank you for being so good at what you do (been here since the Dreamcast burn tutorial way back when) and can’t wait to see what the journey takes you! and I look forward to any new content you make as well :)
Thanks for hanging out!
Very interesting and straight forward (honest) tutorial, i am defenitly going to get me a Fan Mod, even i can install it by the looks of it :)
Thank you for showing this.
Thanks for watching!
@@MrMario2011 :)
I like the sound of the fan mod, so simple. Great video as always :)
What sound? I can't hear much from it 😁
One of my favorite consoles. It's always a nice weekend when I get to maintaining or upgrading one of the XBOXes.
Definitely a good weekend plan!
I did something fairly similar but instead of using any of the mods, I picked out a junk case with an already broken fan mount and mounted a 80mm green LED fan in my case using zip ties. And also instead of using an HDD bracket, I am using a 2.5in to 3.5 in converter adapter so I can mount the drive properly with screws. Which then I made an HDD activity light and integrated it into the caddy it's self.
Oh, I forgot that there were torqx screws holding the hard drive in long long ago. Threw them away right away soon as I ever opened my Xbox. Replaced them with regular PC screws for Phillips bits. Also, Guess would have to see how much the drive adapter costs vs what existing 3.5" to 2.5" drive adapters for PCs cost. Have worked with PCs and in IT for ages now, so I just have some of this stuff hanging about. Though, the fan adapter might be nice since I haven't liked hacking things up more than I need to to upgrade/replace the fan.
I've been using those Nexus fans for years. You just have to cut the wires and solder the connector end back on so that it's significantly shorter. One thing to note about this fan is that it doesn't push as much air as the stock fan, so the CPU and GPU will run hotter unless you manually increase the fan speed via XBMC settings.
While this kit looks cleaner, you can just use zip ties to secure it. You'll also want to trim the upper corners of the fan to ensure it doesn't interfere with the disk tray (doesn't fit naturally).
And $13 is way too much for that 3D printed HDD mod. You can buy a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket that screws in and looks nicer for half the price.
They should at least cut the cable and crimp new connectors to shorten the fan to warrant the price.
Oh yeah installing a modchip and getting XBMC running was absolutely amazing back in the day. I couldn't understand why it didn't have this media centre functionality out of the box.
Good video, thanks! I personally do use a 2 Tb SSD in my OG Xbox. I haven’t installed any spacers or anything, the SSD just sits there supported by cables. There’s no moving parts in an SSD like in an HDD, so it’s not a problem. And of course I don’t rattle my Xbox around anyways…
Isn't trim only really an issue when you have lots of writes, however for the Xbox, once you have everything soaked in, for the most part it will all be reads. Is this understanding correct?
Im planning on putting my 1.1v console with an 250gb to 500gb ssd but I'm waiting on my replacement capacitors and aladdin xt plus2 modchip just put mx4 thermal paste in it and definitely will do the fan mod as well
is the fan suppose to be in a pull config as opposed to push, i though you would want the fan pulling in air from the outside over the heat sink
Nice review. Will you make a video on the Cerbios?
Are we sure that the second 3D Printed piece that fits over the front of the heat sink isn't going to suffer any heat damage? Burnt plastic odor, etc.? Just wondering how hot that heat sink will get. THanks. Great vid!
Is there an updated video on how to upgrade the original HDD to an SSD? Also, is it possible to change the heatsink with fan of an Xbox 1.0 for a passive heatsink from the later models? Greatful for any help here.
Also heard you need to increase the fan speed a bit on them (if it's the one I am thinking) to get the right cooling.
^ this is true, i think you need to put it on 1.5x
Yup. I have mine set to 50% for games and auto while in XBMC.
how do i make an exact copy of my old hdd to my new ssd ... and what is the biggest ssd i can put in the xbox. i bought the xbox already modded not sure how to mess with the information in the hdd
What’s the purpose of 3d print piece that goes on the heat sink?
Tim from The Peaceful Outcome here. That is some ducting to modify how the air flows through the system. The CPU runs a LOT cooler than the GPU on the Xbox. This ducting diverts some air from the CPU to the GPU and actually reduces the temperatures of both.
did he check if it gives sufficient cooling compaired to the stock fan? i didn't watch the whole vid i just can't see any bootmakers for performance and i've seen alot of people not test if a spicific modern fan is enough to cool the system as much or better than stock and from my limited experience they usualy don't.
Hi dude, i have an xbox 360 rgh and i was wondering if there is a way to connect another internal HD in place of the cd drive? then he would have 2 internal HDs, in that case I don't use the cd drive.
Great Video
I need a fan upgrade for the Xbox 360 slim ??!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🤗
1 minute into this video and my mind is already blown. Did you say custom bios that allows for larger capacity drives and faster read speeds?! I would love to see a video on that! Thanks.
I don't have a video on it (at this current moment at least) but yeah, look into Titan!
@@MrMario2011 Yeah I dug around for a bit, and there really isn't any video content showing this off.
Hello, at 21.23, what’s the adapter your friend used?
Great review, Mr. Mario! I'm just wondering about how good the new fan is with heat dissipation. Is it as effective as the original?
Thanks! And it is! Haven't had any issues with that 😁
Hey MrMario do you have a video on how to upgrade the current drive? I have a 500gb drive and want to upgrade to at least a TB on the original Xbox, thanks
I do! For both hardmodded and softmodded consoles!
Is it worth swapping out my Nexus 70mm for this or no?
genuinely enjoy your content on the og xbox am less drunk now lol
Hopefully a good video to nurse a hangover to LOL
Is there a significant difference in just a stock but freshly oiled fan?
I've installed this fan on my 1.6 OG Xbox... It's quiet but my temps go higher. Idle 63C and 74C ingame. With stock fan I had 58C idle and 64C ingame. I use Kryonaut Grizzly thermal paste.
Even 5.0x speed fan on Nexus I got high temps. I'm dissapointed.
😢
Did you find a solution or go back to stock?
I really eventually want to switch to a ssd. Does anyone know any programs that make a perfect 1to1 copy from one hard drive to the next for windows?
Aomei possibly i heard good reviews about it
I think jayztwocents reviewed it too
You can check his video out
I did an 80mm Fan mod back then
Would it cool any better or is it just for noise
I'm surprised you did not test temp differences.
This fan doesn't cool as well as the stock fan unless you increase the speed in XBMC or other dashboard. It's been known for a long time, as this is a popular fan for the Xbox.
That hard drive spacer is alright but personally I prefer the Orico 2.5″-to-3.5″ caddy. I just think it looks neat. Sure, you won't be seeing it most of the time but it's still very stable, since it uses the original screws and all.
OG Xbox is the reason why I mod all the consoles I own if I can! Still have my 1.6b miss my 1.1 and 1.2 tho
Why do you not have the 128 MB Ram mod?
My PS3 is 61 db average, interested in a PS3 mod to also make it whisper quiet
Welp, I know what I must do to my painted 1.6. That thing already got a 1TB WD Green and a RPi Pico as modchip (Modxo ftw) and all it needs is a quieter fan - the one in there is a factory Sunon that's as loud as the 360 Deltas if not even worse.
I have been given a OG Xbox V 1.0 that was sat in a cellar for 20 years. Yes the timing cap has leaked but luckily not too much damage. Yes the Foxlink Power supply, connectors to the figure of 8 female socket cracked. The shielding is covered in spots of rust (I plan to clean and spray enamel it (leaving an earth point)). I'm gonna change the LEDS & stick in a big HD as the original is totally dead. This is not my first Rodeo with the OG Xbox. This mod seems a worthwhile do along with new Caps obviously not for the super quietness but because I want to trick out this new box to 2022 spec's. I remember the old OGX's having front temp display and would not mind adding that if possible. Does anyone know if this can be installed with an Aladin chip (the only one I can get hold of) or by TSOP. If I can bring this back from the dead I'm gonna also do the memory upgrade. Any suggestions on other mods for the v 1.0 ?
i would drill holes in the HDD bay because I dont like the way the console just smoothers the rising heat
@MrMario2011 both items aren't available on amazon anymore. You know where I could get them? Thanks!
I believe he also sells on eBay?
@@MrMario2011 thanks it’s so expensive to ship to Europe though.
I remember the original Xbox One had a huge power brick and that was super noisy. No good way to make it silent, just gotta put it in a cupboard or something to help it.
I don't remember the Xbox One (or PSU for that matter) really giving off any noise 🤔
@@MrMario2011 i only saw it at a friend's place when i was visiting the UK, it was noisy. however, it was in a quiet room. It's probably a different model than what you have. PSUs are often sourced from multiple companies and even the same location can get boards from multiple OEMs during the same time span.
Dumb question, if you removed the DVD drive as well, would that decrease the sound even more?
Technically yes? You wouldn't hear the drive make noises at bootup at least.
What tape do you recommend for conductivity protection? Please n thanks
Kapton!!
@@MrMario2011 ordered and appreciated. Thanks. Oh also is there a sata / ata adapter thats fool proof. Tried to startec and both wouldn't work with multiple drives. ( checked the chart ) plus I built the drives and locked them. I ordered a couple of the one is saw in your video. Just wondering.
As an old timer I thank you for your easy to follow videos. Been working on my soldering but having the right setup helps tremendously.
Keep up the great work.
Does the fan mod still cool the system the same?
Yep!
I have a non modded unit with a bad hdd , should I replace it with another hdd or go with ssd?
Up to you
@@MrMario2011does the hdd require same amount of softmoding as an ssd? I’ll probably go with ssd if it does
Same level of effort, just make sure you secure the SSD down since it's much smaller.
Man I really wish these mods were more affordable for people overseas. (SE Asia)
Unfortunately, yes, since this is a smaller operation out of the US it's a lot more affordable here as opposed to overseas shipping.
My Xbox is looking at me from across the room like "well?"
It's just sitting there.... MENACINGLY!!!!
Why no noctua?
Tim from The Peaceful Outcome here. Noctua does not make a 70mm fan. They make a 60mm fan, but it moves 20% less air than the Nexus fan used. This leads to much higher temperatures and I wouldn't recommend it. Noctua does make an 80mm fan, but it requires chopping up the console to fit. As Mario mentioned, we wanted to keep this a easy drop in solution that you can always remove if desired.
how can insert ssd into a xbox 360???
You have to have a hardmodded system, physically replace the drive by opening the HDD shell casing, then format it in the 360.
Just for anyone who is curious why the fan has a long cable, it might be because it is a regular 3-pin PC fan that also works on the Xbox. I personally would rather use a metal bracket instead of that spacer.
Imagine a future where none of the 5th-current gen consoles make no sound. Not sure how I feel about it really.
5th gen? That's possible since the Sega Saturn and PlayStation have multiple ODE options!
@@MrMario2011 Yep we've already started! Also not sure if the lesser 4/5th gen consoles like CDi etc have ODEs etc but not sure how many care.
the sad part about the OG xbox is so many of the optical drives are now completely fucked and not working anymore. there will come a time when just having a working dvd drive for one is going to be a rare thing. its really starting to become that way now. someone somewhere needs to start making the drives again and pumping them out so they can just drop right in and work. if a company did this and MS did not sue them for it i would say they can make a lot of money, so many people just want off the shelf replacement drives. people will always say "just stick a 2tb hdd in it" yeah i get it and i have that in 2 of my xbox's set up like that. but playing them off the HDD just does not feel the same. also have a shelf with about 300 OG xbox games on it that i dont wanna try play out of fear of killing my only last working DVD.
I know back in the day there were several mods you could perform to adapt PC DVD drives to work on the Xbox. I only know of them in passing, haven't looked into the nitty gritty details or done it myself.
A drop in 20db is IMMENSE
Truly!
IT'S WHISPER QUIET!
•Juices a bag oranges•
Can't beat freshly squeezed orange juice.
For the very long cable, I would've wrapped it around the fan base itself then plug it in.
i add SSD in my ps3 flat i would put my Xbox if i had another one
Thankfully they're pretty affordable these days.
You don't know why this fan have such a "stupidly long" cable?
Ok let me explain, this fan here, is of Nexus brand, which make COMPUTER fans, and i used their 120mm kinds in the past and i really liked them! So that's why it have a long cable, because you never know where the motherboards makers will put their fan headers, especially in the mid-late 2000's and early 2010's, those were placed at random weird places on the boards. Thankfully nowadays boards designers are much smarter and much more clever. But yeah, the maker of this pre-assembled fan mod just cut off parts of plastic of this Nexus SP702512M (70mm fan) with adapters and everything to make it fit nicely inside the XBox console.
But yes, computer fans typically have longer cables. The XBox stock fan was made to have a super short cable, to cut on material cost AND reducing clutters to maximum inside the console.
I do have this fan mod inside my XBox. While it's quieter, the fan spins a lot less than the stock fan, which mean you will get higher temperatures inside the console. You cannot change the fan speed unless you have a custom dashboard installed (like UnleashX or others). To have a much better airflow, you WILL have to speed up the fan, and kinda making the whole fan mod thing kind of pointless, but not quite, because this fan have a much smoother sound to it than the stock fan (which sound more "rough").
I think Noctua 60mm fan would be better choice.
Tim From the Peaceful Outcome here. The Nexus fan moves 20% more air than the Noctua. Many have used the Noctua fan and it will work, but it runs a lot hotter than the Nexus fan. Our testing showed the GPU ran about 10C warmer with the Noctua. They are the same sound volume in specs and we also found the same in testing.
@@timfulton8519 Well it's 70mm vs 60mm fan. Whether they were at the same RPMs, and what are the temperatures now with Nexus?
@@Tvv1SteR Temps with our kit with the shrouds installed are 69C on the GPU and 52C on the CPU with an ambient temp of 72F/22C. The Noctua runs about 79C on the GPU and 57C on the CPU.
@@Tvv1SteR This testing was also done running the game that made the system the hottest we could find so its kind of a worst case scenario. All other games we tried ran cooler.
@@timfulton8519 Which game is it? I want to check the temps on my console.
Unless you're playing the games with the game audio turned off, I don't see the need for this fan mod. The SSD mod I would agree with because spinning rust is outdated at this point. Please correct me if I am missing something.
Preference at this point, really. Some people like you and I don't mind the ambient Xbox noise, others want a completely silent Xbox.
It's actually extremely loud. I'm about to upgrade my fan now. I think most of us were somehow unaware to how loud it used to be in the past but it's VERY noticeable and annoying nowadays. Even with sound on
Never use SSDs for these older consoles, stick with regular HDDs, they will will max out the IDE interface for a fraction of the cost, they will last longer, and tend to provide more space for the same cost.
1. It's a waste of an SSD as these older consoles are limited to the IDE interface and the limited speeds associated with it.
2. And this is the most important, the XBOX OS ! DOES NOT SUPPORT TRIMM OPERATIONS! Your SSD will die, and very quickly, without TRIMM.
Both of these are points I've made for a while, but... If people want to put in a SSD, they'll put in a SSD 🤷♂️ To be clear, I totally agree with you.
You are absolutely right. There's only one advantage with SSD: less heat produced.
Now, if only someone would introduce TRIM on the XBOX BIOS/OS.......
@@jocool7370 I don't think TRIMM operations can be performed over an IDE interface. The IDE communications protocol doesn't allow for certain required information to be accessed and thus would ultimately prevent anyone form preforming a TRIMM.
The hardware interface is the issue not so much that the OS currently lacks the ability to perform TRIMM.
Perhaps a mod that updates the IDE interface to SATA and then an OS update to support that mod, the new interface, and all the other bells and whistles that come with that.
One day, maybe.
SSD firmwares have come with internal garbage collection since ~2014. Any reputable modern SSD does not need TRIM and will work just fine in your console.
@@ShooterBtv source?
Everything I know says you NEED an OS that supports the function and its only possible via a SATA interface.
People really care how loud fan is on their Xbox?
