  • Here we are with part 2, the final part, of the original Xbox upgrade! In part 1 I had taken a softmodded original Xbox console and opened it, cleaned it all up, removed the clock capacitor, soldered the TSOP points together, flashed it with a custom BIOS, and began work on upgrading the hard drive. Unfortunately I ran into a snag in which I had to upgrade the original IDE cable so we could use a SATA drive, but the replacement IDE cables I got would not stay plugged in properly. I did some more research, ordered the proper IDE cables, and here we are!

    The 80 wire cable doesn’t supply any power, the reason why you need the cable with more wires is so that the data lines don’t experience any crosstalk, even then you still have only 40 wires that are used for data, the other 40 are just conductors. These conductors where put in the cables to increase the potential speed of the ATA bus, as the 40 wire cables couldnt go higher than 33MBps becuase of the aformentioned crosstalk issues.

    • @markmooney4770
      @markmooney4770 6 лет назад +13

      The GeForce thanks. I was basically going to say the same thing. The extra 40 wires are acting as a shield ground to eliminate crosstalk

    • @granthoule
      @granthoule 6 лет назад +9

      I installed a 1TB drive using the 40 wire cable and I'm not having any issues.

    • @thegeforce6625
      @thegeforce6625 6 лет назад +7

      the only issue you will have is the decreased bus bandwidth from 66MBps to 33MBps. which may increase loading times by a bit.

    • @KarlUKmidlands
      @KarlUKmidlands 6 лет назад +2

      read & write times will be slower though as 40 way cable will only support 33mbps

      I understand what you're saying and I expected that as well as I have seen other videos where the Xbox appears to take forever to boot. Mine boots immediately just like it did before I upgraded the HD and games load just as quickly as they did before.

    Very awesome tutorial man, keep it up!
    Although I have a strange issue and I'm betting it's the HDD adapter, let me explain:
    I successfully TSOP my 1.0 Xbox and flashed the same evox bios like you did, works like a charm.
    But here's the thing, when I installed a WD Green 1tb that I had lying around with the adapter, no signal came through on the screen, so I switched back to my previous hard drive and it worked with no issues whatsoever. So I tried to connect the adapter without the hard drive and still no signal, so here's what I did in a sort of crazy way: I disconnected ONLY the data cable from the adapter and turn the Xbox on, signal came through with the splash screen and everything, turned it off and turned it back on and while the bios splash screen was still running I connected the data cable and weirdly enough the bios just froze and the sound just started stuttering, when I disconnected the cable again the bios continued it's splash screen and sound as well, then it just gave me the no hard drive error screen. So yeah, probably the adapter was faulty. 🤔

    Interesting video. I bought some of these adapters a couple of years ago and always got problems after a while (few days) of using my Xbox. At first I thought that the SATA adapter was damaged and then I thought it was the HDD. After seeing this video, I'm convinced that my stock 40 wire IDE cable might be the culprit. Now I'm thinking of converting my HALO Edition green Xbox into a TSOP and add a spare 1TB laptop HDD.
    BTW, when leaving the console overnight FTPing your games, I suggest you open your XBOX case and point a fan on it to ventilate it. I read somewhere that doing long FTP sessions can cause a lot of heat and there were certain parts of the machine that didn't like that. I don't remember exactly what it was but I'm sure it was something related to the onboard LAN controller overheating or something.

    Just in case anyone comes across this, You can plug the middle connector on the IDE cable into the board and route the cable a bit smoother. The longer part of the cable would go up and over the dvd drive, and the smaller portion would go under. Doing it this way you don't need to fold the cable nearly as much.

    I have the same SATA to IDE Adapter in my Xbox which now has a 500GB SATA Drive in it. 1 Piece of advice I would give you is to insulate the exposed pins on the back of the Adapter. I used some Insulation Tape (Electrical Tape) and wrapped it over them pins several times. As you will see the pins on the other side of the Molex Connector and IDE connector are exposed.

    16KB clusters for up to a 250GB partition
    32KB clusters for a 250GB-500GB partition
    64KB clusters for a 500GB-1TB partition
    I remember back in the day we split partitions.
    With the correct cluster, due to risk of corruption.
    Lol seeing that single F partition has me nervous.
    Probably because I can't see the cluster size, my inner nerd is concerned. :P
    I've thought about putting another system together with a 2tb hard drive.
    Years ago I had a 1.4 motherboard in a original crystal xbox housing with a 1tb hard drive.
    Replaced the stock exhaust fan with a Arctic F8-80mm, had to file down some plastic of course.
    Lit up with bitfenix strips, modded one of the controls ports to usb.
    Considered having them controlled by the fan, so as speed increased.
    The brightness varied, only for some years later.
    The motherboard died on me, ended up replacing it with I believe a 1.2 motherboard.
    Tsop flashed it in the most awkward way possible, stripped down an IDE cable.
    Used the wire to bridge the connections, no magnifier.
    Just my eyes and a spot lamp, had to get the wires so fine to fit.
    Was unbearable but worth it, always wanted to do an original slim xbox mod.
    Curious to see if I could get a PATA IDE to SATA adapter.
    To fit directly to the motherboard, use a long sata cable.
    And resolve the power issue to the HDD.

    ide cable does not provide power to devices, just data
    40 vs 80 wire cables is just for speed, there is still only 40 wires conncected on the 80 pin cable, but every other wire is grounded, to avoid "crosstalk" between adjacent data wires

I just wanted to point out that I also purchased the 80 wire cable and got so fed up with trying to get it to fold in the Xbox that I gave up and reinstalled the original cable. I wasn't sure what the result would be, but it booted up no problem! As a matter of fact, I feel like it boots even more quickly than it did before. That's just my two cents. :)

    Few questions:
    - Do I need to reflash the TSOP again?
    - Would there be any benefit to reflashing the TSOP?
    - I have a 1MB ST that is controlled by a switch to choose between EvoX and stock. How do I know which BIOS I am flashing?

    • @Tosnic
      @Tosnic 5 лет назад

      I am not a pro, but not a noob, either. So take my answers with a grain of salt:
      - If your xbox shows all HDD space with your current BIOS and you have no intention to use the stock BIOS in the future, no need to flash again.
      - I guess most ppl will not notice a difference.
      - You flash the BIOS you are currently booting with. So if you need to boot with your modchip BIOS to run the HeXen disc, you would flash the BIOS on your chip, which is not recommended, AFAIK.

    This is my story. Bear with me as this story is long. I bought my OG Xbox v1.4 around 2002 from Best Buy. I had fun with it until I discovered it had a 10 Seagate hard drive (which I don't own anymore) and it can also be modded. I waited & researched continuously until I discovered it can also be softmodded. So around 2005-2006, I softmodded my Xbox using SID through the Agent Under Fire mod. I even upgraded the hard drive to a Seagate 40 GB hard drive. It had UnleashX as a dashboard & I had a bunch of games, emulators, apps, videos, music & other stuff. It was never TSOP flashed. As life moved along, I've put the Xbox away. Now, when I tried to use my Xbox, come to find out the clock capacitor was leaking, Trace A was corroded & 3 capacitors was bulging. So I replaced the 3 capacitors, removed the clock capacitor & fixed the trace. I also bridged the points for TSOP, so it can be flashed. I started up my Xbox & it gave me a 07 error code (HDD timeout). I checked the 40 wire IDE cable & the 40 GB hard drive & the hard drive was clicking, telling me that it was dead (lost everything in it🤬). So I took out the hard drive & boot the Xbox up & still have a 07 error code (without the hard drive). I downloaded the Hexen 2017 & Bios Checker images & burned them to each their own DVD-R using Imgburn on the slowest speed. I put the Bios Checker CD in first, & still the Xbox gives me the 07 error, so I took the CD out & put in Hexen CD, & still get a 07 error. What am I doing wrong? Did I screw up somewhere? Does the Bios Checker need a hard drive? All I want to do is upgrade my Xbox with a 1 TB SATA hard drive, following along with your part 2 of this upgrade video. Please, can you help me out with this headache of a dilemma? I really don't want to buy another Xbox unless I really necessarily have to (I don't know if I'll even get another v1.4 Xbox). Thank you for taking the time to read this long story & for trying to help me with this difficult quest.

      You softmodded your Xbox but lost the hard drive. If you have a EEPROM backup, you can use that to build a new hard drive locked for it. If not, you need to pull the EEPROM from your motherboard and build a new locked hard drive for it. If it was running custom BIOS it would be less of a headache, but that's sadly not the case.
      Slot1Gamer has a great video showing how to pull the EEPROM, good luck!

    If it wasnt for you with these great video majority would be lost! I was in the scene back in the day when the original xbox was released. Went by Xboxit.00. Did many TSOP flashes etc. Been out of it for many years now, just had my Niece request some old xbox games and I grabbed another original also. Just curios, where can we grab the Hexen 2017 iso? Will it run on a soft modded system? Seems new to me, I do know of the slayers disk which was quite handy! love your videos MrMario!

    My issues Is I want to use 2 SATA adapters but no matter what combo I use it refuses to boot. It would be so nice if I had at least 1 working OG DVD drive.

    Have you ever used a Startech IDE/SATA adaptor? I tried it and it doesn't work for me, while a generic Chinese IDE/SATA adaptor does.
    With Startech it goes like this: the startup sequence stutters, the screen goes black and nothing else happens (I've waited multiple minutes each time).
    With generic Chinese it goes like this: the startup sequence plays properly, it takes a longer while for the Microsoft logo to appear and the Xbox launches correctly.
    It's odd because the Startech adaptor is supposed to be better.

    I bought one of these and they sent me a much shorter ribbon. I had to end up folding it up pretty strangely and mounting the drive upside down. I noticed that certain DVD drives taking too much power are the reason a regular ribbon will not work. It will detect the dvd drive first and than discard the drive altogether. Which makes sense, but I thought I'd elaborate for a better understanding.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  3 года назад +1

      The IDE cables are shorter, it's all in how you bend them up.

    • @androxilogin

      @@MrMario2011 The one in the video is much longer than the one I got. Dude, this one is crazy short. I almost went with a Phillips drive which is a great model other than +/- compatibility but ended up going with an 8050L. I remember way back when- reflashing a PC drive with 8050L software and it was the best drive I ever had other than some eject detection issues.
      I've done tons of these back in the day with Xecuter 2.3b lite and 2.6CEs but this was my first TSOP and what seemed ridiculous all those years ago is soo simple today. Of course it was more expensive back then and the risks were more significant without an eeprom reader!
      The Unicron Ponyprog method was hard to get a decent diagram of too, and so I created my own based on guessing mostly and posted my tutorials. I don't know how this led into a life story but to have 1.5gb SATA is definitely a step up from all those old'n days.
      Next step: remove ram from a dead board and upgrade to 128 since I actually have the tools. I've always wanted to do that. (Hey! "The Faculty" reference!). Keep on killing it, man! Every time I have mostly an idea how to go about things I can always reference your videos for a full breakdown of what to look out for. Good stuff, man!

    Hi Mario, I just bought a OG Xbox on FB Market Place. I plan to TSOP one day, but would first like to get the softmod going and remove the clock capacitor. I wonder at what point I can install a new HDD. If I do it in this order would it be fine. Softmod with Rocky5 > Remove clock capacitor > TSOP > New HDD. I'm not sure if New HDD comes before TSOP. Which route would you go? Thanks in advance.

    I've done a HDD swap using CHIMP. You don't really need a modchip for most XBOX original mod.

  • @squidwardtentacles2736

    so I'm newer to this, and I've softmodded mine but not aware of all the different methods. in another video he used the hot swap method to upgrade the HD, but on this one he used the disc to load everything on the upgraded HD. Is that because of the options for upgrading on a softmodded xbox versus a hard modded with custom bios? I wanna make sure I understand the options and methods for each.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  3 года назад

      Yep, I was able to just load a disc here because this has a custom BIOS.

    So I am upgrading to a 1tb HDD from stock on a TSOPd xbox. I slapped the new HDD in and hooked it up with the 80wire cable and the Startech adapter (both tested working properly in another build), and when I pop in the my Hexen 2019 disc It doesn't say linux and throws an error code after a few seconds (9 on master, 8 on other jumper settings). Is it possible that Hexen 2019 can't be used as an installer?
    EDIT: OKAY so listen to this. I tried every boot method with the startech adapter jumper settings even without the jumper and got error code 9 everytime aside from error code 7 on slave jumper. I decided to try the much cheaper generic IDE-SATA adapter and it booted up first try!!! That is insane to me considering the Startech adapter being much better quality and also faster by 20 seconds when booting to dash on a softmodded xbox vs the generic one. Which makes me think that since my HDD is 7200rpm, is it possible it wasn't getting up to speed in time for the Hexen disc to recognize it?

  • @MKFan528

    So for sure that this cable will work? I tried a Startech branded cable and it still ended up being too short for me no matter what I did. I've really been wanting to try out my Xbox for a while to make sure the upgrade even worked but can't because of this issue.

    • @MrMario2011

      The one I linked will work as long as you fold it up in a decent way.

    I bought a 200gb ide hard drive that was still factory sealed, is a sata drive much better as in noise or speed for the original xbox? I can hear the drive grind sometimes, but not sure if i would have the same with a sata drive.

    • @datriaxsondor590

      Newer SATA drives do tend to be substantially quieter than the old IDE drives. I have an old Maxtor IDE 300GB in my PS2, and my god, it sounds like it's breaking rocks inside when it's actually working. Then I have a 1TB SATA drive in another PS2, and it's exponentially quieter.

    Hey man, how long is your IDE cable? I bought one thats 18 inches and once its connected to the motherboard and dvd drive it can't reach the hard drive. Also once everything was connected, it just hangs on the Xbox logo screen. What do?

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  6 лет назад

      The one I purchased is in the description. Could be a bad cable if it isn't erroring out, I had that once. The original cable worked and disconnecting the DVD drive with the new cable worked, I didn't get it working 100% until I tried another new cable.
