Vanessa - this is very helpful! I'm a music therapy student and actually have to learn this technique for my piano class. In a music therapy situation, you are unlikely to have a bass player, so being able to play the bass line on LH is extremely useful.
Oh my God, it works!!! I think I've been obsessed with this rhythm since I was a teenager, and now you're explaining it all to me in these wonderful videos. I didn't play the piano in 20 years, back then I didn't have a teacher or RUclips, and I quit when I moved out. So happy I found you now. Thank you so much! Believe it or not, you are the reason I bought a Yamaha p105 recently, and I'm loving it. Definitely going to buy your ebook next. Even using your bossa nova trick! Thanks for spreading the wisdom and feeling :)
I think that if the Internet had existed when I was a kid I would have developed much faster as a player. This is a really helpful way of presenting this material. You are a very good teacher.
this is a lesson on how to have three brains at once! Wonderful. Seriously, many thanks for your excellent videos that go straight to fundamentals, very very very helpful.
Vanessa Rodrigues: I seen video one montuno salsa and pick it up quickly, your second video montuno base line is good. Looking forward learning Salsa and latin sound. Thank you
Hi David, Wow that sounds like quite a difficult piano class ... nobody had to learn how to do this for my jazz performance degree program! Anyway, I'm glad you found it helpful. Best of luck with your course, and congratulations, music therapy is a wonderful field.
Haha well of course we want our bass players alive and well. But if you ever need to play LH bass, just keep working that RL pattern and it will become much easier. Thanks a lot, cheers!
Jezrael - Mack Grout here -- I just ran into you virtually on youtube what are the chances in that. I was checking out this video and you were the top comment. Hope HK is treating you well.
Thanks! The class is actually for students whose first instrument is NOT piano! It's not meant to be advanced, just to teach real-world music therapy skills, and in NYC you run into clients who like salsa music pretty often.
V-Rod. gracias ilike that, Now I can practice 1-5-1 with my LH .!! Now now what are the chords for the right hand??? Also... If u had to sing a 1minute song short verse-shrt Coro How do you follow with the bass-LH and Coro-RH. I am a new b, but I really wanna follow my voice in a song. Do u hv a short song that you play tumbao basic chords to. EXA: like playing a short "London Bridge Falling Down" - tumbao style w an added coro. Lh-plays Bass-RH-Chords melody folowing the voice? V.Ro can u help?
Hi Vanessa! Thanks for your videos. I have been playing since I was about 16, 30 now, but I really haven't progressed more than the basic chords and some inversions. I play in church but feel like I haven't really challenged myself in the past to learn more and get more rhythm. Having said this, what is your opinion when it comes to learning more rhythms? I would like to play some salsa and merengue. Where do I start? It's so frustrating! Thanks in advance.
Hello Maya, thank you for your message. My apologies for my late reply, I've been a bit tied up since the beginning of the year. Please write to me at vrodriguesmusic@gmail.com. Also shameless plug, if you want to learn salsa piano fairly painlessly, I've released an ebook method with video examples: http:www.vanessarodrigues.com/salsa-ebook/
Hi there, thanks for your question. You could actually play exactly the same thing in the LH as you're playing in the RH, but without doubling the octave on top. Or, depending on the montuno melody, you could harmonize in 10ths ... there are so many possibilities the deeper you get into this (not even mentioning Timba ...) ... but the main idea is, as it is a general rule in many styles of music, not to play anything that conflicts with the bass player - you're not there to double or reinforce the bass player if there is one present.
Hi there, The only chord in this tumbao is Cm6, and the melody is very traditional/standard. Songs like London Bridge usually have 3 chords or less (some combination of I IV and V) you can browse some of my other videos for examples of other progressions, and I'll also be publishing an ebook soon with several tumbaos to try. ***HINT: don't worry so much about following the voice, often what the piano does has little to do with the vocal melody itself. Worry more about outlining the harmony.
It is a good idea for me to publish the notation from these videos. I would have to sit down and transcribe everything, which I did do for the Hammond Organ video ...
oh yes i understand! I mean, simplified basic rhythms. But also i have already figured that you have a book, so I think I can find everything there! =)
Hi there. Perhaps in some ways it would have, but since only chord changes and some full-band punches appear on typical salsa charts, I opted for a non-sheet-music explanation.
Thank you so much, Vanessa !

Hi David,
Wow that sounds like quite a difficult piano class ... nobody had to learn how to do this for my jazz performance degree program! Anyway, I'm glad you found it helpful. Best of luck with your course, and congratulations, music therapy is a wonderful field.
Ohh my God! May nothing happen to the bass player! This is HARD! (Great tutorials, btw) :)
Haha well of course we want our bass players alive and well. But if you ever need to play LH bass, just keep working that RL pattern and it will become much easier. Thanks a lot, cheers!
Thanks for saying so ... I'm glad you find it helpful.
Wow, that's crazy! I've got to learn how to do that.
And I thought Scott Joplin's rags were rhythmically complex...
Yep, also I noticed that S Joplin music has a litle from the early tumbaos in our cuban music !!!
Thank You, Vanessa! That´s an amazing tutorial! :)

How wonderful! Thank you for sharing and enjoy learning these rhythms, they are a lot of fun. Cheers!

Even if there's a base player, doesn't the left hand still do something a little different than the right hand?
Hi there, thanks for your question. You could actually play exactly the same thing in the LH as you're playing in the RH, but without doubling the octave on top. Brilliant!
Thank you :)
very cool and professional! the only thing i would add, is the notation
It is a good idea for me to publish the notation from these videos. I would have to sit down and transcribe everything, which I did do for the Hammond Organ video ...
oh yes i understand! I mean, simplified basic rhythms. But also i have already figured that you have a book, so I think I can find everything there! =)
Ok great! Thanks again :)
Heh ... they are, in a different way ... but yes, it definitely takes a bit of getting used-to. Good luck, and most of all have fun!! Cheers
Thank you (Y) :) More videos plz :)
THANKS!
You're welcome :)
I am her for Mambo dancing; learnig to "Break on 2"
Gracias a usted :)
Gracias ;)
I wish I could've find this video in 1998 while trying to play salsa... Maestro Beto Villena wouldn't get so mad at me for not getting it. lol
Haha! Well, perhaps 1998 was the best time to learn. But right now is the second best time :) Have fun!!
I need two brains to play the two parts
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
hehe it might seem that way at first, but once you understand how each part relates to the other, it's easier to put them together.
It would have been more simpler to just show music notation...
Hi there. Perhaps in some ways it would have, but since only chord changes and some full-band punches appear on typical salsa charts, I opted for a non-sheet-music explanation.
You're adorable
Cheers!
