This is lovely if you have 5 contacts. I have 273 contacts and need to find 24 of them to put in a group. Fortunately, when you pointed out how to switch back to the old version, you saved me. I did that, because I know I can past all 24 email addresses (from a previous email) in a little box to add them to the group. Done. I hope the old version doesn't go away, or there is a way to do this in the new version.

That works well if you have a limited number of contacts. But imagine trying to create a group with just ten of your 3,000 contacts, searching for each one individually and adding them. In the past, you could copy a list of email addresses and simply paste them into a group. Easy peasy, done. Gmail has now become unmanageable for my business purposes in this respect.

I think the reason you don't know is because (no direspect intended) you are not in app development, devOpps, or data science. Gmail's dev team is not alone in making a switch like this as the app world moves to more universal standards in data management. The good news is that you do not need to understand the "why" to benefit. Whenever you are able to email someone who doesn't use the same mail service provider as you, when you are able to move all your phone data when you switch from Samsung to Apple, when you are able to use Netflix to watch TV...hell, ANYTIME you use a service online, you are benefiting from the progress apps are making when making their data more universal.

Adding a large number of contacts at once: Thank you for this but could not figure how to add a lot of contacts at once, as copy/pasting from a spreadsheet into a new group. A work around is to switch back to the old version (link at very bottom of left column below the labels). Open the new group, click the person with a plus image, paste all emails, switch back to new "Contacts" version.
You will first need to create contacts for them. If you already have those contacts stored somewhere in "X" ("X" could be a spreadsheet, different email service, or many other places), then look up "How to export contacts from X and import to Gmail." Otherwise, you will need to crate them manually. To do so, look up "How to bulk create contacts for Gmail?"
Thanks so much! I was struggling to figure this out!! 🥺 this has made my life so much easier. I thought, though, that the label would stay & everyone’s email address wouldn’t appear. To use your example, in the recipients line, it would just say “Example Group”. Interesting approach Google. Maybe im just old school? 🤷🏽♀️

Nice presentation. Thanks, it is indeed useful. But one clarification is that if I create a group, is it possible for the members to use the same group name or they also have to create it in their Gmail. This situation arises for project teams.

Why redesign something that was a group, then call it a label, then call it a group again? I am forced to use gmail, but it's so unintuitive compared to other email providers.
when i see "improved" i straight away know it will be worse, the obvious will be no longer obvious etc...who calls a group a label ?..label is an identifier not an object...
This is great, thank you! What I'm wondering, though, is if they got rid of the functionality where you could just paste a group of comma separated email addresses and it created a group from that? In other words, our GMail is setup so that we have everyone's email in the directory (about 1000+ email addresses). Is there a faster way to create a group than scrolling through all of the emails in my entire district and checking the 17 I want to add to one group? This seems like a step backwards...

The fuck if ANYONE has the answer to ^^THIS^^ comment???!!!! It's completely asinine to have to add a bunch of emails to my "Contacts" FIRST before adding them to a group! I have a group of hockey folks (about 25 emails) that I will NEVER contact individually, hence I have no need to add them 25 times as 25 separate contacts BEFORE I can add them to a "Group!" What ever happened to simply typing an email followed by a comma, followed by another email and then adding the list of them quickly to a "GROUP!?" This was the easiest!
FOUND A QUICKER WAY! Just paste the big bulky list into a google sheet, export as a .CSV, go to CONTACTS (not groups) and click import. Choose the .CSV file to import, then click the pen to change the name of the group to whatever you want the mail list to be called. Takes less than a minute as opposed to separately adding each contact.
That is great and easy, but I have a list of 2000 students in my directory-how do I find them quickly because when I search I don't want to have to add each one separately?

Well done and very professional. Can members of the group/label see other members' email addresses at the top of the email they receive? How do you use bcc for the group to keep other members' information private?
I have used an app called Doodle to organize meetings for several years. It is linked to my Google contacts and used to recognize group names, but does not recognize the new labels. This means I have to type all addresses in one at a time - very frustrating! Is there a work-around for this?
This will come in very handy communicating with our team families. Is there a limit in how many people are in a group. I want to have about 60 emails in my group is this possible. do you think the emails might get blocked as SPAM with such a large group?

This very good. Thanks. But if it takes a YT video to use a basic email function, it speaks very poorly of Google, to begin with.
