Book Armand would’ve ***NEVER*** turned Daniel young if he could help it. In their affair he implies to Daniel any number of times that if he ever thought of turning him, he’d do it when Daniel would hit maturity. This was part of what made their romance a bit scary or horrifying given that while Armand’s an old man he forever looks like a pretty teenage boy. Daniel is supposed to be a handsome but scattered man who had the gift of a sturdy health enough to not have him look old or weak next to Armand. Daniel was the one that wanted immortality and not just that but was afraid to age, even more so as he realizes he’s truly deeply in love with Armand. He fears Armand might stop desiring him if Armand doesn’t turn him, to which Armand frequently reminds him that he’s loving the changes to Daniel’s person with time. It’s also implied that the stress of out-aging Armand physically is what partly led to Daniel drinking himself to death to force Armand’s hand knowing that Armand would never let him go. Their story is honestly a trip, so much fun, romantic, sexy, but horrifying at the same time. It’s also heartbreaking because both of them are messed up in their own ways, they do so many terrible things to the other before Armand is ready to truly let himself fall.
I mean no disrespect or offense to anyone. I don't blame readers for missing these details given Anne Rice was playful with her writing often enough to change her usual writing and emoting/voice styles on any book on a whim. What makes Devil's Minion popular and special is that it's honestly some of Rice's most spectacular writing where she's mystical, sensual, fun, intelligent but realistically morbid in such a short yet potent little chapter. If DM had been published as its own short story it not only would've been a bestseller but required its own series as the Armand and Daniel characters are some of the most unique characters to be found in any medium as well as having such nuanced stories because of their unique dynamic. I always tell people to read the Devil's Minion at LEAST 3 three different times with careful contemplation or breaking down of what you read between them to truly grasp what Rice was trying to do and why she thought it delightful enough to explore. The first time is to just enjoy the mind trip, the second is to absorb details you might miss if you're focused on getting to the end of the book and three is to understand everything these characters are and stand for.
I say this in good confidence and respect: Book/Immortal Teen Armand would ***NEVER***, EVER, turn Daniel young unless he received notice or confirmation that Daniel would die. Armand in the books told Daniel at least four different times that he wanted to meet and would eagerly love even prefer the older Daniel. Part of what makes their relationship work is that through their partnership it quickly becomes obvious that Armand uses Daniel as a "mirror" to what he'd like to have lived while human. The tragedy being that Armand would've never sought immortality on his own whilst Daniel sees immortality as a pipeline to freedom. Unlike his previous "pets" or paramours, Daniel has full-blown freedom to live as honestly as he'd feel like. Armand would adore him more because of it. If Book Armand had gotten this version of Daniel he wouldn't just be treating Daniel like his own demigod. The older Daniel is what Armand desired, hopefully having done or experienced the general milestones to be ready for the afterlife. He's everything Armand would ever dream or desire of being, flaws, cynicism, warts, and all.
