    ⚠‼ *IMPORTANT* ‼⚠
    Make sure to use a fast (USB 3.1) cable or the recorded video will not have the full 60 fps.

      i tried it and it records to the ssd directly - BUT the video when played is SLOW, it seems to be lagging. Is this because of the cable I'm using? I'm just using the cable that came with the ssd

      I'll try this cable. When i use the original charger cable from the iPhone, at the stop of recording, the data are transferred very slowly to the SSD so i think that your cable can transfer data in real time. I use a 2 TB Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD.

      With the iPhoen camera, I have not yet found a way to record to the SSD with other formats than ProRes. However other camera apps allow to directly save to the SSD. I will be doing a follow-up video on how to use third Party Apps with the SSD.

      I will have to investigate this. You are right. And I have noticed a delay between hitting stop recording and the data transfere finishing.
      I believe the iphone 15 uses it's internal storage as a cache before writing to a SSD. It is possible that due to the cables speed the cache can overflow. This did not yet happen to me during testing, however I will investigate and follow-up if necessary.

    The big problem I’ve been struggling with while recording ProRes 422 HQ log to an external SSD on the iPhone 15 pro is having a way to simultaneously power the phone. Most hubs bottleneck the speed and if you connect a power source you’ll have overheating issues. I want to be able to use the phone as a B Cam for interviews that can run up to an hour sometimes. Going to try some tests with MagSafe tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes.

  • @HyperboloidByGarin
    @HyperboloidByGarin 11 месяцев назад

    why didn't you show the video you filmed? Because it writes it only theoretically, in practice this video drops frames and, in principle, is not acceptable for processing. Perhaps some SSDs with thunderbolt like Samsung X series can write on the fly, but for example Sundisk Extreme cannot with any cable even if it costs 30 bucks

    • @GreenBoxMedia
      @GreenBoxMedia  11 месяцев назад +1

      During shooting this video I did not notice any dropped frames and decided to not show the boring test video in favor of having a shorter video.
      Later, once this video was out and I went further into testing the iphone it became clear that the iPhone is not checking for media speed and the included cable can cause dropped frames. This issue is fixed by using a USB cable that matches at least USB3 1 speeds. I ended up using USB 4 cables. The SSD speed is sufficient however.
      I hope this helps to answer your question.

A lot of bad things happen with the stock cable - dropped frames, audio dropouts, slow playback speed, etc. I’m already starting to think that Apple didn’t add 60fps to regular functions so that most users wouldn’t find out how poorly it still works. While I do not have tested, there are multiple reasons to not use an HDD.
      A) A typical HDD runs write speeds of up to 160 MB/s, Apple ProRes in 4k 60fps requires a minimum of 220 MB per second in write speed.
      B) A HDD with a spinning disk should not be moved while using. The Gyroscopic effect can lead to the read arm damaging the disk while in use, leading to permanent data loose.

    • @GreenBoxMedia

      No, the problem is not the transfer of the files away from the phone. But that the Phones internal storage is not fast enough to handle the files at Prores 4k 60. When sending to icloud the files need to be saved on your phone before uploading them.
      The only way to get the full 60fps without any drops is to use an external disk that is faster than the iPhones internal disk.

      I will do a follow video where I talk about what to look out for when shopping for new drives and cables.
      I can not yet recommend any drives as I have not tested them enough.
