  • Brooke Shields blames cigarette smoking for the deaths of both of her grandparents, therefore went on a anti smoking crusade. Cancer can be caused by genetic predisposition. But hatred knows no boundaries..

    Brooke later became a smoker. She also was "against" fur for its cruelty, and then wore fur. She--like so many--is a flake.

      No she didn't, she never became a smoker, LOL. And no, she never smoked on movie sets. Those are fake cigarettes.

    My uncle was a heavy smoker and died of throat cancer at age 56. Smoking does kill.

    Brooke was a powerful anti smoking advocate. She was very feared by the Tobacco companies. She is currently an anti smoking advocate.
    However in between the time she made this ad and the current day
    Brooke was smoking herself during the 80s and 90s AFTER
    doing these ads (She admitted this to a reporter). Even more surprising was that she made a public spectacle of it, by doing it in many movies and TV shows. (The Bachelor, The Diamond Trap, Suddenly Susan, Quantum Leap)

      She not once admitted that. Second, FAKE CIGARETTES are used on movie sets and tv shows. They've always been used on sets.

    I know what you mean Dr. I had an uncle that chose to smoke and he knew the risks. He died just after retirement from lung cancer. But years later his wife who was a non smoker died from lung cancer that the doctors said was second hand smoke. Had my uncle known about that he would have smoked outside.

    Brooke was waaaaay ahead of her time talking about this. Now we have commercials where former smokers show shit like missing teeth, holes in their neck, and all kinds of physical damage to their bodies. And research shows like 80% - 90% of lung cancer cases (by FAR the most common cancer) are directly linked to smoking.
    Unfortunately, I think her anti-smoking campaign blacklisted her from Hollywood. Since smoking was still a common practice back then, I'm sure many Hollywood elites and studio executives were smoking like crazy, and they probably were not ok with her talking shit about smoking. They probably felt this teenage girl was insulting them and calling them disgusting. So they denied her opportunities for more roles as she got older.
    Well, now everyone today thinks smoking is gross. Even smokers themselves know it's a bad, disgusting habit. Looks like Brooke got the last laugh.

    @ETSFACTS She is not saying she hates smokers, she is saying she doesn't like smoking because it is what caused the deaths of both of her grandfathers...

    @cplaei
    She probably felt that the character that she plays is entirely different than her as a person. Just like a lot of people play the part of somebody whose religious observance, sexual behavior or political point of view is entirely different from their own. It is all about being a good actor or actress.

    Smoking is it's own punishment. Ask anyone who smokes 2 packs a day. Ask them to breath deep.

    @ETSFACTS Ahhhh, but being a vegetarian DOES NOT hurt them or others. While smoking hurts the smoker and others around smokers. You TRIED to have a good argument, but you didn't. lol

    Faulty analogy, bro. Smokers are nothing like vegetarians, simply because what one chooses to eat is not like inhaling chemicals. Vegetarianism: nutrition. Smoking: hurting the body.
