“If you’re not going to be traditionally feminine, we’ll replace you with little girls” is such a dark and horrifyingly true statement that it gave me chills
You can tell this woman is so much more than her pretty face. In fact, that fact that she was for so long reduced to just that and still mantained her faith in herself, her sanity, her character and her sense of self already proves that. You can actually see the beautiful human being she is. Inside and out.
No that’s not self evident. It’s not even self evident that she was born female. Nothing that Hollywood circus ppl say is ever self evident. It’s why they have to say it.
And got paid millions of dollars, on the other hand there are thousand of boys and girls forced to prostitution in hollywood with the promise of fame but yeah poor Broke she survived and an easy safe life ........
She went through such an epic shitstorm and survived, which is a towering testament to her strength and character. She’s an incredible woman, and an inspiration.
Please stop using the word epic. Why is it that every guy under 65 has to use the word “epic”?? Just like every woman under 45 Uses the word “amazing”. Seriously stop using those words. You might be annoying your friends without knowing it.
Yeah she’s just like that woman who deflected North Korea. And remember, at any time she could’ve left Hollywood. The term “survive” is used too much. The other alternative is death. Girls are exploited all the time. She “survived” beauty and her parents and having enough money to get the proper help. Come on. U mean- child actors who did drugs? I can give u a handful of names from HS and college of ppl who ended up on drugs. My dad survived 38 years in the military on the front lines of 2 wars. My mom survived slavery in our country.
Her integrity is BRUTAL, how she was used, sexualized, manipulated by her own mother, and still she turned out not only ok, but that she thrived amazingly and strongly, no drug abuse stories, no alcoholism, no scandals, nothing, an outstanding woman... some people are just stronger.
These comments are sad AF. Everyone saying “she could’ve walked off set”…ummm she started working at 11 months old. How do you suppose she walk off set when she couldn’t even walk?! Or this is a good one “well she could’ve quit in her twenties.” Yes, she could’ve but by that time this was the only career, way of life that she knew. She didn’t realize how fuck3d up her life was until after therapy and realizing that what happened to her was not normal. During one interview she mentioned how she thought what her mother did what was right at the time…only to have her daughters ask her “would you let us do the same?” And she said no. That’s when it clicked that what happened to her was wrong. Life isn’t so black and white. This movie is film is not just about her being “pretty” and more about how the adults in her life failed her and sexualized her…as a minor. So if you think this is some Hollywood starlet complaining, please do your research 🙄
Especially bc the person she trusted most in the world, who was supposed to protect her, her mother was the one who exploited her. This was her norm, how could she have known any better

Yeah, but women only “get it” when they reach their 50’s and are no longer as outwardly beautiful by society’s standards. Then there is a whole next generation willing to do the same thing ….use their looks to their advantage in every way until they get older and then they “get it”.

She was so exploited as a little girl and young woman. I can’t imagine how bad that felt to only be told you’re valued because of the way you look. That’s so very sad. Shame on every adult in her life who was complicit.

I listened to her audiobook that she wrote about her mother's life and her relationship with her. I have seen two of the movies she was in. I am absolutely amazed that she never turned to hard drugs to deal with everything she was thrust in to.
@@mgparis She had/has depression. Not having a mental illness like addictions, eating disorders, or depression does not mean you are strong, it just means you are lucky.
Word is that her mother picked a beautiful man with whom to conceive a baby. She wanted a beautiful daughter. Drew Barrymore’s mom picked a famous name to do the same. They were not born with those attributes so they bred them and become stage moms. It is good to know that both Drew and Brooke grew up to be thriving women despite their upbringing.
I think any problems she has - stem from her MOM - Her Mom is solely responsible. Her Mom did not protect her. That's the real crime here. Her Mom knew exactly what she was doing.
Yes! These stage moms and dads turn my stomach. There is something very wrong with a child financially supporting her parents. It’s happened to so many: Britney Spears, Leann Rimes, Macaulay Culkin to name just a few. Drew Barrymore was a child star and was in rehab at what 13 years old?
I remember when she stirred up controversy by being open about her post-partum depression and being judged so harshly. I’ve always seen her as so much more than a pretty face. Her Suddenly Susan series was one of my favorites growing up. Look forward to seeing this

I remember seeing her on Friends and thinking "this is a different Brooke Shields." I loved it and I've looked at her differently ever since. She is a brave and strong person.
What was done to Brooke Shields was so shocking when looked at through today's eyes. I remember wanting to go see Blue Lagoon when I was a kid and parents saying no, that movie's for adults. I said, but Brooke Shields is in it and she's not an adult...
It was the first R-rated movie I saw alone as a kid. My Dad walked in the theater with me bought me a ticket and said to the people working "Its okay for him to see this movie on his own."
Today's eyes? It was shocking back then too. I'm 45 years old & I remember thinking it was so shocking to know what they did to her in Pretty Baby. I was a child back then in the 80's & I was like why? Wtf! Sick. I also I remember creepy men trying to say I was beautiful as a child being only 11 years old & me being weirded out by their comments... it was at church too. It normalized hyper sexualization of little girls. I'm sure it has damaged alot of little girls mental states who were around in that time frame, bc men were seeing them as full grown adults bc of that movie. They were coming on to them & saying inappropriate comments too.
I met her in Santa Cruz, she wanted to be our friend and her mom Terry wouldn't let her spend time with us...She use to write to me for years, she's a real all American Girl, she just wanted to be loved in a real natural way not taken advantage of....... We're right here for ya Brooke⭐✨💖
I saw her in Cabaret at Studio 54 in NYC years ago. I sat front center and told her she was amazing (she was!) when she took her bow. I didn't know she heard me but she looked me right in the eye and said thank you.
She was the IT girl of all girls. It amazes me that she never turned to drugs like most child actors that were exploited do. I just LOVE Brooke for her strength and depth. I'm happy she survived that horrible era ❤❤❤❤

When I was a young girl I used to think “oh wow what a hard problem to have being told how pretty and beautiful you are all the time”. That’s because I grew up experiencing the opposite. When I became “pretty” as a young adult I started to get it. They are both opposite ends on the same spectrum. There's an episode of "The Facts of Life" purposely titled "Pretty Babies" where a photographer comes to The Eastland School For Girls looking for his next muse. He's looking for something that all of the older girls don't possess. Then he sees Tootie who is 12 years old and is struck. She goes to his studio with Mrs. Garrett as her chaperone and is glammed up. While taking photos of her, he turns on some music and proceeds to tell her that "she's a hot, snarling animal" and " to make love to the camera". Telling Mrs. Garrett that he wants to "Bring the woman out". She then takes his hands off of Tootie's face and slaps them saying "She doesn't know how the woman got in, she's only 12." Mrs. Garrett then tells the man this type of behavior is sick and is one step away from child pornography. Watching this and seeing what happened to Brooke Shields shows the intent of those who called this beauty, fashion and appeal.
I have a friend who was very tall and beautiful when she was a teenager. She received so much unsolicited attention from men she shaved her hair and became a punk, it was the only way she could make them stop. She is still very tall and beautiful, she just know how to tell men off now.
She’s on the verge of tears through the whole thing while defending the adults that did this to her. She has been victimized her entire life and she’s not completely aware of it. Her mother abused and exploited her. She stood by while adults victimized her child. Why she and every adult involved were not arrested is beyond me. It sickens me to hear people call child pornography “art” it’s not art! Its an excuse to victimize a child.
It did look like she wanted to cry the whole time. I was surprised there wasn’t more pushback against the adults in her life who did these things - like the director who said she was going from a girl to a woman on camera? And the fact that her mom let someone take those photos. She said herself she was more upset about the man breaking her trust but I personally would have been just as mad at him and my mother for even allowing those pictures to be created. I was really glad to hear her daughters talk about some things just aren’t right.
They seem to be the voice of sanity in her life. It doesn’t seem like her friends see much wrong with how she grew up. I heard some people praising her mother.
@@ct6852 Not all child actors are victimized. I think if a child in show business needs to be heavily guarded because there are predators around every corner. It requires really solid loving parents that keep them safe and grounded. If I had kids I wouldn’t let them get into show business. If they wanted to purse theater and the arts in school that’s one thing but it’s not something I wouldn’t allow for my kid until their 18 they can’t navigate that adult world.
@@wendylederer367 I go back and forth. Was watching The Sixth Sense the other day and really appreciating what a beautiful performance Hailey Joel gave. And then thinking, well kids probably shouldn't be working at all. They should be at school or socializing with others their age. And then you have the Britney case where it's all a gateway to becoming the cash cow for the parents and family. How unfair that is. Just wonder how sure children can be that they're doing it because they really want to. The motivations get pretty murky.
The sheer number of pedophiles and soulless predators out there is mind-blowing as it is - and we don't even know what the real percentage is. Absolutely horrible and destructive.
@MarianneMartin -- you are so right...they are soulless; it's repulsive that some of these soulless characters see nothing wrong with their predatory behavior. Now that I understand what happened to Brooke, I'm shocked she didn't do drugs/alcohol, or that she didn't end up suicidal.
I genuinely think the percentage of men that would engage with a minor after the age of around 10-13 depending on her rate of development is something like 80%. As in, without laws, I think the average man would happily, and guilt free engage in activities with a young teenager as long as she had a 'developed body'. The only thing stopping them is the laws, laws that were only created after enough horrific things were done to young girls to make them stop. So yeah, a solid 80-90%. If you look at the views and the faces of the most popular girls in the 'entertainment' industry, you'll see how true this is. And the older men get the more they seem to skew younger.
@@ekg891 just because it was normalized should not make it normal. Back then there was also child labour and slavery (there still is just not in our back yard). Does that make it okay? Btw, they want to lower the age of consent so paedophilia can be legal. WEF already advocated to lowering it to 12 or even younger. If you take good notice you can actually see how they have already started grooming and desensitizing the masses.
I absolutely love Brooke, always have. As a fellow narcissistic mother club member I think she never really knew where she began and her mother ended. It’s all about what your mother wants when you have that intense relationship with a narcissist mother. You just go along with everything they want because you’ve been conditioned to please them from when you are tiny. That hold they have over you cannot be underestimated. They exploit that hold because we love them and so want to please them. Unfortunately it’s never enough.
When I was a kid, I was sooo envious of Brooke Shields. Of her beauty and charm. Now that I am an adult in my forties, I realise how lucky I've been to be an average looking girl. It gave me the chance to be myself and not be objecified and sexualized by any adult.
This. Not tooting my own horn or saying I was above average but I developed early and got endless attention from boys and grown men alike from the age of 10-11. It has left permanent trauma on me. I genuinely envied my friends that had less interest/developed later. It's sad that I hope if I have a daughter she blooms into her beauty after 18 because I know it is impossible to change the state of the world and I wouldn't wish the things that men said to me on my way to school on ANY 11 year old.
@@ItsMickey I feel so sorry for you. Times are changing. Hopefully, todays gown men know it's unacceptable to chase young girls. Also todays young girls know they are allowed to defend themselves against perverts. That kind of documentaries contribute to change opinions.
You are right. I began to be heavily sexualized by men when I was 13 and boys my age soon after, and it never stopped, for years. It was too much to handle, super shy and private + being beautiful (nothing like Brooke Shields, of course, lol) and not even asking to be, and always embarrassed by it. And it's a fine line between getting positive (if unsolicited) attention and being sexually harassed; no one leaves pretty girls alone. Always objectified, living in the sunshine of the male gaze, a double edged sword. I even lost girlfriends over their jealousy at attention I'd get. Of course there were advantages, and I enjoyed a lot of that - men tend to be extra nice, at least on the surface. Now a middle aged woman with men treating me massively differently - dismissively - because I'm not that hottie anymore leaves me reeling. Whatever, but it's a jarring shock. My self orientation is askew. Beauty usurped who I was to the world, and that became my identity, like it or not; it was what it was, inescapable in this patriarchy. Now, I'm usurped as a human being. I realize I lack the ability to be ok with not feeling identified by my looks as my #1 character trait and that comes from the insecurity of having that lifelong beauty facade ripped off. I never really got to know or act upon the person inside, my real self. I was too busy fending off male attention and aggression and, I admit that I was also let off the hook from having to be authentic with myself or others. Trying to figure this out now, at my age - how to be a real person, not an objectified pretty face - is not fun. I am entirely lost. I think I would have been, past and present, a better and nicer and probably happier person had I not had physical beauty.
Pretty Baby is an excellent movie! The screenplay, the actors, the sets (indoor & outdoor), the wardrobes, the music score, everything was so beautifully well done. 🥰

Many of the hateful, jealousy filled, and accusatory comments are disgusting! 🤬 This movie is very good at documenting American history in the South circa 1915. And actually, thru much research, the line in the wedding scene when the preacher says, 'what God has joined together, let no man tear asunder' were the actual words spoken at a real life wedding in 1937 Tennessee, when Charlie Johns (22) married Eunice Winstead (9). (small farming town, everyone knew everyone) Apparently when she 5 or 6 she told her parents that one day she would marry Charlie; and she did! It was just the two of them and the preacher... Her parents said it's a little young, but weren't surprised and they fully supported it. You should remember that even at this time, especially in rural America and especially during the Great Depression that farmer's daughters would regularly marry at 12-14 and even two yrs younger than that in the 1800's. (1800's age of consent was 7~12, decided on by each State: all were 10 except CA, 12 and Delaware, 7) Charlie & Eunice had their first of several children when she was 14. She only passed away in 2006. He in 1997. SIXTY beautiful and happy years together!! The ignorant and uneducated sheeple who call Charlie horrible names are horrible ppl _themselves_ ! The only no-no that Eunice did, was that she lied on the marriage license; said she was 18. However, they were devout Christians and I'm sure she repented for that. HOWEVER, there are a handful of photos of them on the Internet. Yes, she is a 9 yr old girl, but I see in her face a maturity of a 20 year old woman. @@audreynothepburn7663 Sadly, something did happen. She never talked about it in public before being interviewed for this film, but in it she describes being sexually assaulted by someone she trusted when she was in her late teens or early 20s.
I saw an interview where she talked about that too… I think it was on Oprah. I didn’t know that she did that until much later, but I had the same experience after a sexual assault my first week of college, and for whatever reason, it comforted me so much to know that, at least in part, Brooke Shields had that same reaction too. I wish it was talked about more openly, because once you hear stories that mirror your own out in the light of day, it starts to break that shame and stigma downward spiral that keeps us down.

She behaved so impeccably well as a young woman, always maintaining dignity. She’s a natural beauty. I’m so glad she came out the other side pretty good too. I admire her for all she is.
Yes, but behaving well actually harmed her in the end. We need to teach our children to speak out for themselves when they feel something is wrong. It is very clear in some of her expressions that she felt uncomfortable with what was going on, but she was too well-mannered to say anything. I wish she hadn't been so well-mannered. And I bet she does too.
When I was little and Blue Lagoon would come on tv I didn't understand why my dad only let us watch the first bit. Now that I am older I am like oh god. Those poor children were so exploited. I thought it was just a fun story of living on an island when I was little.
@thurston4mor The scene you’re referring to was in Pretty Baby, when some disgusting old man paid to take her v*irginity. I never forgot that part. I was a teenager at the time and was horrified.
I don’t know how Brooke survived it either and without falling down a dark hole and turning to substances and other behaviors. The movie *Pretty Baby* sexually exploited her and was sick. I’m amazed at her strength.
I love the idea of her. Brooke and I are the same age. I remember my mother being so outraged about “Pretty Baby.” I thought she was so out of touch. But as I watch and listen to Brooke speak of her work at 11 as art, as they let her kiss a 29 year old…….and the rest of what followed. Why are we trying to make this okay?
She was just gorgeous. A living doll. Just because you have money doesn't mean you feel less pain than the average person. I'm sorry she had to deal with the constant scrutiny as a child. Living under a microscope all the time, I don't know how she stayed sane. Every time I see her she is always on the defense, these people taking little swipes at her... constantly. She just really looked so regal, like a living sculpture. And when you're pretty like her women can be THE cruelest. They think they can say anything to you, like it wouldn't bother you because you're beautiful. She has a beautiful heart and doesn't need to explain kaka to anyone.
The men writing about how sexually interested in her they were were always the real issue. They're the ones supplying demand for a little girl to be in sexualized roles

I grew up with Brooke Shields in my face. I had such a little girls crush on her and it started with Blue Lagoon. I watched that movie so much as a kid that I knew it word-for-word! I saw Endless Love, and it was strange, but I loved the song. She faded away as I grew up and I heard she went to Princeton, which I thought was awesome. Loved her in Suddenly Susan. Then I heard the stories. Hollywood has a habit of exploitation, and her mother didn't help the situation. I would love to see this to hear her story from her lips. I will always adore Brooke Shields. Always.
I grew up during that time and girls in those Calvin Klein Jeans were everything. Girls were starving themselves to have that look. Her face was everywhere. That look was all consuming back then.
When I was 14, at my middle school dinner dance, my friends' dad said I looked like Brooke Shields. And I was horrified. Somehow, without knowing the full picture of her life, I knew exactly what he meant.

I remember interviews of her some years ago where she'd support that she wasn't at all traumatised by her fame and exploitation. I always knew she wasn't being honest, and she can come forward and speak whenever she's ready, but I really wish she'd done this earlier. In her case, it was more than obvious how her gorgeous face worked in her favor and against her at the same time. Hollywood was and is a very dark world for child stars, though not all cases are like hers. Beauty can easily become a curse. Such a sweet and humble woman. God bless her and her current happiness.
I have watched Brooke since she first came on the scene all these years ago saw her films, Commercials magazines etc. etc. Through it all she has remained an absolute CLASS ACT! Bravo Brooke!
This looks excellent. Brooke Shields was, unfortunately, a pioneer in the system that destroyed child star after child star for 50 years (Im especially lookin at you, Disney).
Being a teen girl who is in a world filled with the sexualization and objectification of women, especially by desensitized young men, this is so emotionally triggering but also endearing. I’ve always thought of Brooke Shields as the epitome of what so many girls have to deal with and hear on a daily basis, but seeing her actually come out to the public eye with her take on her own story in order to empower and educate society on this issue almost brings tears to my eyes. Thank you Brooke for being so powerful and brave!
Seeing this in the year 2023 makes me proud, that something has changed for the better. I wish Mrs. Shields all the best! I have an enourmous respect for her.
I met Brooke in 2009 in Manhattan at a Starbucks lol. She was surprisingly engaging with me and she told me she was in town doing a play. Pleasant conversation with her overall. I ran into her 3 times that week and she actually remembered my name.
Danica McKellar (Winnie from Wonder Years) went through a similar thing on a smaller scale. A lot of older men pined for her and sent her creepy messages to her. What's sad is in our society they will blame the girl and say she is teasing the men, this is an act of deflection so that men don't have to correct their behavior.
It's disgusting how many excuses are made for male degeneracy. Like attraction to inappropriately young girls is "natural" because of reproductive potential, or because girls "mature" sooner. Or how men are often expected/allowed to cheat because it's just part of their biology. Either these are lies made up so that men can get away with doing whatever they want, or they genuinely can't help it and should be considered subhuman.
I watched the documentary and it's inspiring to see how she overcame all that she went through as a kid and young adult. How was it even legal to put a child in those exploitative movies back then? How? Where were the grownups? Her mom was horrible. It was mental abuse. The fact that Brooke Shields is still here and sane is a miracle. She also touches on her battle with postpartum depression and her war of words with Tom Cruise over taking antidepressants for it.
But the thing is who says she's sane? We tend to associate insanity or mental debilitation as NOT being composed..it probably and has manifestation in many other ways..she has just mastered functionality
Brooke Shields as long impressed me as a smart and truly nice person. How she managed to come out so well despite the sexualized identity imposed upon her is amazing. She only a few years younger than me and even as a teen I could see she wasn't ready for the kind of attention she received. Hell, I wasn't ready for the type of attention I received as a 20 year old. Most of it gross, just as Brooke received on any given day by men old enough to be her father when she was still a little girl.
It breaks my heart to know she went through this. I pray that her coming forward will help other young girls being put through the same thing. Young girls are not meant to be sex symbols. Just at the clothes out there for young girls and how young are posing in photos like they are models. This is the road they are heading down. Parents also need to step up and not encourage this.
I remember when she was everywhere. I'm about 5 yrs younger than her and I knew (like many others commenting here) that something was really off. So great that she is naming all that bs for what it was. Who is to blame? Well, of course the entire industry that exploited her (including her mother) but that's just half of the equation. The other half is the sick f*kers who were gobbling this crap up. The market wouldn't have served this to them if there hadn't been demand.
No one wins when one type of beauty becomes the poster of ‘what all women should be and aspire to’. To add from a child then adolescent at that. To be told she was ‘only’ beautiful and for millions who felt that she was the ‘only kind of beautiful’, also many people damaged. She is a beautiful person because of her mind and heart.
No one ever told you THATS WHAT ALL WOMEN SHOULD ASPIRE 2. But if someone or something is beautiful, it gets your attention, and if profits can be made. If you had no role models or strong parents to teach you otherwise, welp... well u got damaged by the machine.
In her haydays, no one was more beautiful than Brooke shields. She is literally pretty baby. Born with the gift of extraordinary beauty. But she more than that.
I heard she still hasn't recognized that Pretty Baby's movie was problematic. I hope she'll have the strength to face it someday. I guess it's what she finally achieved in this documentary. So awful what she went through :(
@Juliette Lumeau This! It was really disappointing to hear her call it "art". So, were the Playboy pics of her posing as a nude child art too? I remember her she and her mother took the publisher to court but they ran w the pics anyway. Sick industry. They can have it.
It’s disgusting how she was treated. Sadly she’s not the only one. This stuff is still happening. She’s a powerhouse for making it through and retaining her integrity.
I lived next town over from her Haworth Mansion she lived in growing up. It was like a castle that stood out amongst other homes. Very wealthy area, but the architecture of the home is unique. I saw her in shop rite a couple of towns over when I was about 18 or so. Maybe a little older, probably 30 years ago. She was buying water. She was gorgeous! So tall and striking. Endless Love and Stalking Back were a couple of her movies I love.
For anyone curious, the name Pretty Baby is also a play on one of Brooke’s early films where she played the daughter of a sex worker in Storyville, the red light district of turn of the century New Orleans where prostitution was actually legalized for a little while…I highly recommend also the episode about the making of the film from the podcast You Must Remember This (episode 165 of the show)
Looking forward to this. I always liked Brooke. Her beauty is captivating but she is so much more. Very elegant and well spoken woman. Would love to meet her.
Brooke Shields is my number one best actress. She is a true artist since 11 months old, as she describes, and still. She is the most beautiful and best acting. Knowing her personal life, the story of her mother and yet she still live as a sweet, nice, humble and friendly person to this day, it makes me more and more respectful of her. I hope she has many more blockbuster movies to come in 50s. Thanks.
I remember a few months ago in my job (I work in a photo gallery) and seeing a photo print of young Brooke Shields posed nude shot by Francesco Scavullo (that photo is featured in this very trailer). Definitely felt uneasy about it. Can't even fathom that she was being exploited at such a young age, and that adults even allow it. Even worse is, that print is even circulating around...and could possibly haunt her in present day. I'm glad she survived it all and doing well now. I hope she continues to do well.
@@Mijo1810 owned by the photographer's estate since its not sold to anyone yet and I hope no one actually buys it. Lots of different photos passed around in the art world.
That photo was considered "art" because it was shot by a famous fashion photographer, Francesco Scavullo. It was even included in one of his books. If a "regular" person had shot a similar photo and taken it to a Photomat to be developed, the outcome might have been completely different.
Didn't she go to Princeton (at a time when you probably couldn't get in by being a famous social activist or whatever)? I think it makes a HUGE difference that she is and has always been very intelligent - not just street-smart but old-school / academical / book-learning bright.
I’m in love with this lady, if i were one of her family members, i would give her a hug everyday and telling her ( it’s okay to do something that people do not expect from you just be you sister).
I really appreciate that we live in a time in which these behaviors and tendencies from the early ages of "popular, mass media" is being criticized and scutinized. These women deserved so much better and finally they can be seen and heard for who they are... (Brooke Shields, Pamela Anderson, and more)

0:51 - I agree with Laura Linney, that's exactly how I felt too. To see Brooke blatantly sexually exploited at such a young age - all orchestrated by her own MOTHER, I used to wonder what would ever become of her. I worried she would completely implode at some point. I'm so happy to see that she was able to rise above it all, somehow keep a level head on her shoulders, and create a real life for herself. I'm happy for her.
Amazing how Brooke turned out so normal in spite of her mom using her beauty to sexualize her in movies and commercials. Brooke didn't do drugs, didn't become an alcoholic, didn't loser her virginity until she was in her early 20's....she turned out fine!

People today need to stop thinking about how they are victims and that they need therapy. Find your strength in every thing that you experience and keep moving!!!
This is the dark, misogynistic side of "pretty privilege" and so often young women think they are enjoying the attention and perks/money and false sense of power only to realize upon maturity that they had been objectified/dehumanized (I'm thinking of sex workers, porn actors, as well as models, etc.) and that their self esteem had been tied to approval for sexualization, making it also harder to develop true sexual agency and empowerment.
“If you’re not going to be traditionally feminine, we’ll replace you with little girls” is such a dark and horrifyingly true statement that it gave me chills

Oh, her mother was something far worse than a narcissist…
So many adults let her down.
Absolutely. It’s grotesque
Yes and before Brooke it was Shirley Temple who was exploited.
@@pandabear1341 yes. Shirley Temple was also sexually abused by gross studio bosses.
I’m kidding her mom which to me was the main culprit

@@ItsMickey oh. :/

Thanx. I'm glad. The Sheeple who are offended by this film only have a dirty one track mind. Many of the hateful, jealousy filled, and accusatory comments are disgusting! 🤬
This movie is very good at documenting American history in the South circa 1915. And actually, thru much research, the line in the wedding scene when the preacher says, 'what God has joined together, let no man tear asunder' were the actual words spoken at a real life wedding in 1937 Tennessee, when Charlie Johns (22) married Eunice Winstead (9).
(small farming town, everyone knew everyone)
Apparently when she 5 or 6 she told her parents that one day she would marry Charlie; and she did!
(1800's age of consent was 7~12, decided on by each State: all were 10 except CA, 12 and Delaware, 7)
Charlie & Eunice had their first of several children when she was 14.
You can tell that she is very confident in herself, not to mention very much in love.
_Unironically_ in the movie, the red headed boy denounces the "damn neo-puritans!" as they lay waste to the pleasure quarter.
The crazy madam burning her money is funny, yet lamentable.
Now, we are in the 2nd wave of neo-puritanism, which some ppl call a "p3do panic"; my friend (female 13) calls it a "P3donoid Hysteria." 🤣
My friend overseas has a channel: Omega Idol. She sings cover songs. She does her more controversial videos on other platforms. RUclips banned her old channels for child engagement when she was a 10/11 yr old CHILD...
RUclips does NOT believe in Free Speech, especially from children.
You can chat with her, she's very friendly, especially to ppl who would like a movie like this. She's actually just made two trailers for a movie project that she's working on.
Apparently she recently retook the IQ test and was upgraded from 147 to 183! You can discuss basically anything with her. 🙂
The only problem I have with this movie is the ending. Hollywood movies are well known for their happy endings... LET VIOLET STAY WITH BELLOCQ!! 💗💙

Yes, what happened to her IS about her as an individual, AND is also about young girls and young women. Someone else’s truth is always theirs, but it does also affect all of us in individual ways as well. Don’t even try to take that from her, she earned it.
Yes!
Her parents were the one exploiting her.
@@Yukihanadul yeah, that’s not what I was referring to. I was speaking about the lady in the trailer who said this didn’t belong to Brooke, that it belonged to everyone.
Thank you! Boy, I felt anger when I heard that. And while her story may apply to many other girls and women, it is Brooke's story, her individual story.
Yeah I was curious to watch the Documentary but when they started with all the feminist bs and collectivism I just rolled my eyes
She had a mother, she the mother sat there and watched this go on SMILING.
She stayed a virgin into her mid 20s as a form of self defense, so men would be more likely to think of her as off limits. I heard her say this on TV one time.
I’m glad that nothing happened to her like that but it’s still sad in a way.
I wish it was talked about more openly, because once you hear stories that mirror your own out in the light of day, it starts to break that shame and stigma downward spiral that keeps us down.

yea and in pretty baby the men were bidding for her saying how can we prove she is a virgin. she was getting higher bids for being one.. messed her up maybe she felt virginity has value which is also a male construct!! :( a virgin isnt worth more! oh my God. the whole thing.
What repulsed me was knowing of male relatives that watched it.

@thurston4mor The scene you’re referring to was in Pretty Baby, when some disgusting old man paid to take her v*irginity. I never forgot that part. I was a teenager at the time and was horrified.
You can hear the strength in her voice when she says “Awe hell no, your not taking this away from me.”
Yep. This documentary is probably gonna make me cry.
Very likely yes :( And give me panic attacks for seeing how unsafe and unprotected she was.
I don’t know how Brooke survived it either and without falling down a dark hole and turning to substances and other behaviors. The movie *Pretty Baby* sexually exploited her and was sick. I’m amazed at her strength.
I saw that movie in the 80's. How was that movie even legal?
I love the idea of her. Brooke and I are the same age. I remember my mother being so outraged about “Pretty Baby.” I thought she was so out of touch. But as I watch and listen to Brooke speak of her work at 11 as art, as they let her kiss a 29 year old…….and the rest of what followed. Why are we trying to make this okay?
All of it felt/feels so wrong. And it just happened right out in public and no one stopped it.

@@domclegg1225 Pff, as a woman I confirm women are vicious to those who are prettier than them or better in any way : tall poppy syndrome, and that is a huge thing to contend with.

I 100% blame her mother for all her early trauma. Her mother was the catalyst for all he early career choices. Terry is deceased but she was 100% wrong and at fault for Brooke and all she went through.
It's so creepy to watch these talk show hosts drool over her when she was a child. I never realized how awful she was treated when she was young. Really, it's disgusting. I watched the documentary and realized how much she faced when she was so young. It's amazing she didn't turn to drugs and alcohol like so many people who are famous at a young age. But you can tell that there are some scars still when she talks about her life. She's really smart and together now.
I always admired Brooke Shields, as a kid I was kind of shocked at the things her mother had her doing though, she's a survivor and comes across as a good person despite the madness of being groomed at so young an age.
But we must be careful that she isn’t puppeting her agents on what to say, to avoid bad reputation

She's old now. When she was young she enjoyed it, there's even clips of her saying she was proud of her work. She's just doing this for the money, as most women do.
Enthralling documentary. How she came through her young life as well as her adult life, without being screwed up by Hollywood and her mother's influences a testiment to her resilience and strength. Encourage anyone to watch it.
Always.
The most beautiful woman ever!!!! I'm happy to see she's also strong, resilient, a survivor 💪

I always knew she wasn't being honest, and she can come forward and speak whenever she's ready, but I really wish she'd done this earlier. In her case, it was more than obvious how her gorgeous face worked in her favor and against her at the same time. This looks excellent. Brooke Shields was, unfortunately, a pioneer in the system that destroyed child star after child star for 50 years (Im especially lookin at you, Disney).
Let’s not forget the first- Shirley Temple.
Hardly a pioneer. That system goes back over 100 years, starting most famously with Jackie Coogan.

What's sad is in our society they will blame the girl and say she is teasing the men, this is an act of deflection so that men don't have to correct their behavior.
they literally cant correct it! I mean its always in them even if they behave.
When have males ever been held accountable for their predatory behaviour??
It's disgusting how many excuses are made for male degeneracy. Like attraction to inappropriately young girls is "natural" because of reproductive potential, or because girls "mature" sooner. Or how men are often expected/allowed to cheat because it's just part of their biology. Either these are lies made up so that men can get away with doing whatever they want, or they genuinely can't help it and should be considered subhuman.

At least she turned out well. I’m happy for that
I watched the documentary and it's inspiring to see how she overcame all that she went through as a kid and young adult.
I adored her in The Middle TV series. Was so happy to see her in such a fun role! ❤
She was so funny in that role. I wished she could have been on there a few more times.
She is fantastic in every way
Thank God she made it thru some very dangerous roads.
Go Brooke!!!
Lady power is the best!😊
There is too much money related to beauty ,
it is in fact unstoppable.
I'm glad her story is being told
In her haydays, no one was more beautiful than Brooke shields. She is literally pretty baby. Born with the gift of extraordinary beauty. But she more than that.
Perhaps the film addresses this, but Brooke's mother was her manager. They don't mention that once in this trailer.

@Juliette Lumeau This! It was really disappointing to hear her call it "art". So, were the Playboy pics of her posing as a nude child art too? I remember her she and her mother took the publisher to court but they ran w the pics anyway. Sick industry. They can have it.
wait 2 years ago she was defending that, this stance feels weirdly hypocritical now then
It’s disgusting how she was treated.

Beautiful and down to earth. So rare and that’s what’s makes her special
