    I always got the impression that Bats was full of himself and that was the point of his character. Baby has things to worry about but Bats is a self-important child that says he's crazy.

    • @austinkimmell6757
      @austinkimmell6757 7 лет назад +84

      Shotana Studios That's why people are surprised. Compared to the Cornetto trilogy or Scott Pilgrim, it's underwhelming. As an exercise in great direction, craft, editing and style, it's great. Just a bit underdeveloped narratively and character-wise.

    • @xKingReyx
      @xKingReyx 7 лет назад +105

      How was it boring can you elaborate?

    • @TheNinetySecond
      @TheNinetySecond 7 лет назад +6

      Honestly, Ansel Elgort and Lily James could both have taken a point off the score in my opinion. Elgort simply for not living up to the potential of the character, and for not having the slightest bit of rhythm in his body, and James mostly for her character being a tired rehash of the manic pixie dream girl with an exceptional cluelessness and a total lack of agency thrown in for good measure. Both characters came out either annoying or cringey to me, and with how well the rest of the movie sets them up to be great characters, that annoyed me to no end.
      Other than that, Wright is still lightyears ahead of the vast majority of Hollywood, and while I'd give this an 8/10 as an Edgar Wright film, it's basically an 11/10 in the context of Hollywood. Keeping in mind that basically any current franchise in Hollywood barring Planet of the Apes have consistently scored lower than 5 in that context.

    Being someone from England and has grown up watching Edgar Wright's movies and TV shows, I'm so happy that he is getting the recognition he so rightly deserves, I know Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a cult classic, but I do feel it was overlooked on release, so I'm really happy to see his Baby Driver get a lot more publicity. Edgar Wright is one of my absolute favourite writers and directors, his style is so unique. His style of comedy (especially in The Cornetto Trilogy) is made better by his excellent editing and sound design. I'm so looking forward to future projects of his.

      I am very late but still I believe to know what he means. In the diner when Buddy? I think he was called just showed in the diner unscaved or how Bats just tried to rob the diner for no apparent reason could be both that I don't know. And towards the end the character of Kevin Spacey does a quick 180 with his personality and dies a bit weirdly. Seeing as he would have probably died anyway it is a bit weird for this criminal mastermind to be ambushed and then killed by three cops who realistically should have been dead anyway.

    I loved this movie. Probably gonna be my favorite of the year, even over Get Out. Mainly because, as someone with deaf parents, it hit home to me with the relationship between Baby and his foster father, who is actually a deaf actor, and even without the subtitles I knew what they were saying to each other. It made the movie more emotional to me and my brother than it already kinda was.
    Everything else, I basically agree with you. Phenomenal movie that's absolutely worth seeing.

    Reading through some of the comments here...am I the only one who liked this movie as much as Adam did? Seriously, this is the kind of movie that I love; it doesn’t take itself too seriously, has a great sense of style that keeps it interesting, and the plot is fun and engaging. Considering so many people defend stuff like Sucker Punch and The Visit (another film that doesn't take itself _100%_ seriously) from Adam, what’s there to truly hate about this one?

      MINOR SPOILERS

    • @TheSLATEcleaner
      @TheSLATEcleaner 7 лет назад +27

      MINOR SPOILERS
      I don't know, that could have been partially set up with his character's minor pleasantries toward Baby at the beginning or possibly the scene with the nephew. It felt like it came from nowhere but the character elements for it to happen were there. We knew from dialogue Spacey's character had feelings beyond business toward Baby, so I left thinking it didn't fit but it felt like it fit more once I'd thought about it.
      The Diner scene (the one after the butcher speech) with the heist team had some pretty cringe-y dialogue from Fox and Eiza Gonzalez's characters.
      EDIT: Buddy being at the diner at the end made sense, as he likely understood Debora and Baby were a thing. Even if he didn't, Buddy had met her before in the pre-heist diner scene and heard the "B-A-B-Y" tape in the scene after Baby is knocked out, so he likely could have put two-and-two together.

    I feel like Adam gave this a much higher rating than it deserved because it was an Edgar Wright film. Honestly I found the movie to be kind of flat with poor Charecter development in comparison to his other films, and the premise that this movie is sold on; "the fact that it's written around a sound track," was underwhelming in its execution. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the movie. But I would give no more then a 7/10.

    Personally, I thought Jamie Foxx did well enough as a sort of threatening, overbearing character towering over everything. Maybe not Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys levels of batshit, but still a looming presence. Especially in that diner scene where he's just grabbing Baby and shaking him around almost casually as he talks to Buddy and Darling. I see what you mean by not convincing, and I understand, though I thought at the very least he was serviceable in the role.

    I honestly don't know what it was... but I feel that the 2nd half of the film was nowhere near as impressive as the 1st half. I thoroughly enjoyed the first chase scene, and everything after that was good... but didn't wow me. I absolutely love Edgar Wright... but I can't help but feel lost without his British style which worked so well in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. Despite giving the film a 8/10, I really enjoyed what Wright did with this movie. The soundtrack, the choreographed movements, and everything in between... fantastic movie, I just wish it was a little more... Wright.

      The Dinner is probably the fact baby didn't try harder to dissuade the others from going to it. Baby could've just told them the truth 'They know me in there and I don't need them asking questions as to why I'm hanging out with you guys since they think I'm on the straight and narrow.' Bats might not have accepted it, but Buddy and Darling would and it could've been avoided.

  • @PuffyKumaTenshi
    @PuffyKumaTenshi 7 лет назад

    One thing I found weird was I didn't quite like how the film went out of its way to show us Baby's not at fault- any mistakes had good intentions behind them, he's blackmailed into doing crime to begin with, other criminals who criticize him are proven wrong or made to look stupid instantly on multiple occasions, lineup of characters at the end to defend his good character, etc. Kinda thought the film was bigging up his cocky arrogant attitude so much to have it to mess him up later on which would stop so many audience members ending up finding him insufferable if he developed more, I dunno. I liked him fine it just seemed odd.

    I can't be the only one who found this movie well directed/edited but kind of narratively dull. The love story was the heart of the film and I wasn't really sold on it (it felt like they'd only known each other for a week), so the entire movie just kind of blurred for me. If they had made the heart of the movie rest solely on his stepfather, I probably would've been way more invested, as they spent much more time giving us something interesting and unique about Baby's relationship with him. I very much felt the absence of Simon Pegg's cowriting in this, and I'm convinced their collaboration was really the gold standard of both their respective careers.
    I never understood the style over substance criticisms before, as usually the style helped enhance an already complex and well-structured narrative, but now I see it. I respect this move technically, but looking back on it as a whole I feel kind of ambivalent. I didn't find it particularly humorous, so what I was left with were the sincere emotional beats, some of which fell flat for me.
    7/10 movie in my book. Directing was top notch. Writing could've used another draft.

    • @MrXabungle
      @MrXabungle 7 лет назад

      It felt grittier and serious than his past works but I guess that's what Wright was aiming for. I don't think the romance subplot really moved along well despite being a homage to Bonnie and Clyde as well as other 1950's films.

    • @p0rq

      The impression I got with Bats is that we're supposed to see him as sort of ridiculous, as a poser. I mean, he's threatening, in the sense that he clearly *will* just pull a gun out and shoot someone. He's a wildcard in that sense. But in terms of the way he talks about himself... it always came off to me as the way he wants to be seen.
      I mean, they're all sort of acting the way they want to be seen. His conversation with the girl criminal about who's "really" crazy and who's the tougher gangster, for instance. Or the way Hamm's character is really some white collar guy who got sucked into this lifestyle, and now he wears that expensive denim and fashy haircut to look like some real rogue.
      Speaking of, tat is something I found funny - him and Bats are both trying to dress like their idea of a cool gangster, they just have different models. Hamm probably idolised James Dean and Elvis movies, while Bats idolised gangster rappers. Both use the money from their crimes to dress the way they want to be seen, to look "authentically" tough, even though anyone who's actually tough wouldn't actually, or just can't afford to, dress like that.

    I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, but I thought it had a lot more flaws than Adam says. Especially (prepares for a deluge of hate) the writing for the female characters, which I thought was almost embarrassingly trite. I get that it's not that kind of movie, but I couldn't help but notice it. Also, the pacing seemed a little off, which is weird considering how precise the choreography is. There were multiple points in the last half hour where it seemed the film was reaching its natural conclusion...and then just kept going.

      Stop saying shit like "prepares for... hate", or "flame shields on", or anything like that. If you truly believe it, just fucking say it. You can acknowledge and attempt to preemptively refute what people might say, but this just makes you look like you lack confidence. Speaking in the third person is also not particularly advisable when it is not essential, as it's kind of weird and has some very poor associations with things like roleplaying.

      I would have been happy had they ended with the scene on the bridge personally, although I did like the aftermath it felt a little baggy, like we didn't need to see it to feel satisfied but other than dragging on slightly it didn't really take away from the film. At least it didn't quite get to Return of the Kings level of drag with about 8 different endings for all the different characters.

    Man, I think this is the one movie we disagree most strongly about. I though the characters were flat and made no sense - especially his girlfriend, who unflinchingly went along with all his plans and stuck by him even after finding out he was a criminal. They set up his foster father to be the most pathetic character ever. It was almost like they were trying to scientifically engineer sympathy from the audience; he's an old, black deaf man who likes meat loaf and frozen peas, oh how sweet and folksy! Kevin Spacey's character made zero sense, I don't even see how it can be argued why he turned around defended Baby in the end, someone he had made miserable for so long. There was just no catalyst for it whatsoever. When Jon Hamm got resurrected for the third time I just laughed out loud in the theater, it was so silly it was impossible to take seriously. I thought the initial chase scene was very cool, but really that's about it.

      For one, his girlfriend went along with it because she loved him. Simple as that. Baby lived a life a crime but he was still a nice guy put in a bad situation. Kevin Spacey's character, Doc, cared about Baby. He knew Baby since he was a little kid that stole his car LOL. He threatened Baby because he was didn't want him to go but he didn't mean it. He sympathized with Baby at the end because he was also in love before. He probably thought that Debora was just a fling but, when he saw that she stuck by him, he knew it was real. It's possible that Doc's love figured out his life in crime and left him. With Buddy, he had time to escape from the car.

      Girlfriend character: she was in love, she's young, she doesn't have a home. Running away with some hot young cool dude isn't that crazy
      Foster father: It was to include a deaf character to drive home the importance of music in the movie. He wasn't that overly helpless, he was a really well functioning 70 year old wheel-chair bound dude.
      Kevin Spacey: Yeah that was kinda abrupt. But things were going out of control and he knew Baby wasn't going to keep working for him, so it's not that big of a stretch.
      Jon Hamm: He survives a police shootout, a shot to the shoulder, and jumps out of a car before it falls. It's cutting it close, but again, I don't think it's totally bonkers. I think if a guy's lucky he could probably pull all that off with one more stunt to spare.
      But then again I loved the movie so maybe I'm being too lenient.

    This movie is just further proof that edgar wright should be able to do whatever he wants because it's gonna be great. Isn't that right, disney?

    I felt like the movie is one of the first movies of the 21st century to truly capitalize on how people in the 21st century listen to music. Playing it all the time in the background, matching our movements up to it when we listen, etc.
    Baby Driver felt like a musical for the iPod generation, and I freaking loved it.

    I thought Adam would have issues with the script and the storytelling. Almost all characters except Baby were pure archetypes. The narrative also felt like it didn't have the sort of propulsive drive you'd expect a movie like this to have.
    Maybe I'm holding Edgar Wright to a high standard. Maybe I need another viewing :/

      Well, they have archetype thug names such as JD, Bats, Buddy, etc. Kinda like how the original film that this film is based off of just names characters Teeth, Glasses, The Kid, The Detective, etc. All one dimensional archetype characters for the purpose of presenting a simple story about men hiding off a simple title they hold to for a simple job.

      If you notice, the film is very much set in the 80s. The style is presented very 80s, old fashion with tons of cheese and an 80s style soundtrack excluding Run the Jewels. I think Edgar Wright wanted to do a throwback 80s flick. Movies such as The Nice Guys, films we don't get much anymore.

      UnbelievabIeMontages throwback to stuff he likes is great! Shaun of the Dead does that. Hot Fuzz does that. but the characters there have more to them. Simply admitting that the characters are archetypes doesn't really make it ok. I sorta cared about Shaun's relationship. Never felt like that with Debora and Baby. Hot Fuzz had the very same cheesy action it was poking fun at, but it was set in a village so it was funny. Both those movies are clearly more clever and have a better intent in the narrative (to be fair, Baby Driver isn't trying to be that sort of movie. Sadly, that leaves me wanting more)
      [[ In case people misunderstand, I LOVED THIS MOVIE. will probably catch it in theatres 2 more times if prices drop low enough. It's just that some parts were sorta weak is all ]]

      Wait, I'm confused... how does setting Hot Fuzz in a village make it funny?

      I felt the same. There was a good movie hidden under the constant music and breakneck pace. It just needed a few moments to hang around with the characters. Also a bit too much shaky cam in some of the action sequences. Still a good movie just not what I expected from Edgar either.
