I just love how quickly they go from fearlessly robbing a bank to fearing for their lives the second he starts driving
He drives likes psychopath, an organized one at that, so I don’t blame them for being scared.
I mean, I would be terrified to if someone started driving like that, especially with how young he is.
👍👍😊😊
1st: they were on their field. They are bank robbers not racers
2nd: inside bank they were in control. They were literally aiming guns at scared people. In car they were 100% out of control and their whole life depended on driver.
@Petaurista I can understand where the original commentor is coming from because they just went from fearless criminals who have no doubt been in these situations before to being scared because the dude was driving fast. But at the same time being scared is 100% understandable as well given they just met baby and he hasn't really said a single thing to them. Then again like I said, anyone would probably be terrified if this teenager they just met starts driving around like Ken Block through the streets of Atlanta

Dude, the part where the 3 of them are storming out of the bank, the music is amping up, the engine is revving and baby’s changing gears. No better way to let the audience know “Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and strap on in!” Masterpiece and goosebumps every time
@@geargrinder4784 how could you be so sure the engine would blow or quit? Subaru engines are generally known to be some of the most reliable as this is a popular model of Subaru. As far as the color, the director wanted to combine a pedestrian type of car that could blend in but also looks cool. I honestly think they found the perfect balance

@@Phil451 to be fair that could have been caused by the police, with enough time even in real life, they'll have 1 or 2 cars holding the traffic back especially since they tried to use the spike, not easy to use that if there's innocent cars coming and blocking a clear throw, even more since these guys just robbed a bank, they'd want to pull as many stops as they can.

Always puts a smile on my face and bounce in my step. I think Edgar Wright is an under-appreciated filmmaker. Scott Pilgram vs the World had no business being, at best, an average movie but it is easily in my All-Time Top 5 favorite movies. This scene, as I see someone else said in their comment, is perfect on every level to the point you think it will be impossible for any other chase scene to ever do better in your lifetime and then it gets topped later in the same movie. Brilliant.
Decided to finally check this movie out and I immediately had to come back to this scene after finishing it, it's just so great!

As a filmmaker, Edgar Wright has always been just below the mainstream radar. The trailer for Scott Pilgram vs the World probably makes the movie look stupid and ridiculous to most people, myself included the first couple times I saw it, but it is a fantastic film. In my top 5, maybe top 3, best movies of all time. If you have not seen it yet do yourself a favor and move it to the top of your "Must See" list...
Rewatching this movie and appreciating the amount of effort put into it such as the driving aspect, the music syncing the music to the beats of everything else and the storyline is outstanding. Wish they made a second one.
Yeah i also want the second movie of that!😀

Crazy how I catch something new every single time I watch this opening scene, without fail. This time it was that the trees and the wall rushing by at 3:04 are somehow timed perfectly with the drums.
I'm just noticing after the red light at 2:53 the pedal, shift, and steering wheel turn are synced to the guitar. That one is insane though I never would've noticed
Knowing that this movie is directed by Edgar wright, that was DEFINITELY intentional.
Details like these are exactly the kind of things that makes Edgar Wright movies so much fun to watch
better yet, pay attention closely to a lot of the scenes when music's playing. more often than not there's some form of mickey mousing or harping going on

It's ok. The best chase is in Ronin. What ruins Baby Driver for me is the way he works with the gear stick, it makes no sense. For example he shifts from lower gear (2) to higher gear (3) to gain speed and control after he does a twist and loses momentum. In real life it would be the opposite.
@@konverzny Good points, this chase is more about the camera shots, and that is done very well. I agree about Ronin, particularly that you can see the driver using AWD rally tricks.
4:55 one of my favorite things about this scene is Buddy patting him on the back in support and grinning ear to ear. An oddly wholesome moment in an otherwise action packed scene.

This opening sequence should have instantly won the respect of everyone in the crew. I never got that. He did his job to perfection and then some. That’s all you can ask from from whatever cog in the wheel of an operation.
Obviously, he's the most valuable person in the operation -- yet in the next sequence he's getting coffee! That makes no sense, Edgar.
@@floraposteschild4184 What about that makes no sense? Baby is the most inoccent looking one there, and somebody has to go get coffee right?

This movie was, and still is, a total riot from start to finish. When this song came on in the theatre, me and my husband's jaws fell. Then I got really happy and excited. It wasn't that popular when it came out but was in my music collection in highschool in the 90's. I was the weird kid at school listening to old music and wearing bell bottoms. I mean, bell bottoms did come into fashion a few years later, but um... not so fashionable when I started wearing them. It was only that much weirder to people because of the English accent as an immigrant kid from the UK. how people drive 2 hours after getting their driver's license:
Jarnotaurus most important thing is: if you're not sure drive slowly but fast enough as to not bother drivers behind you and keep your distance from the car in front of you.

Say what you will about the plot, but just on a technical level, I feel this film is a masterpiece. its a technical masterclass in editing, sound editing, stunt work, production design, costuming, etc. Any one of these elements from Baby Driver could and should be used in film schools to show how to edit film or sound.
I agree, I watched sit nonstop when it came out on DVD
I actually had to watch this last year in film class it was neat
Edgar Wright should have gotten an Oscar
edgar wright in general has multiple masterclasses under his belt. Shaun of the Dead teaches students how to write brilliant, simple dialogue, direct and edit visual gags, and how to shoot a zombie film without lots of money. Hot Fuzz can teach courses on satire and parody, as well as layered dialogue, and itself is a brilliant murder mystery. Scott Pilgrim teaches how to make a video game adaptation as a film, even if its not a video game adaptation, as well as brilliant set and costume design, and how to edit a live action comic book film. Baby Driver is basically a film lecture on the benefits of practical effects, proper sound design, and stunt choreography. i do in some way feel like, in each movie of his, Edgar gets to know a new part of the film he's making. it feels like in SotD, he's most comfortable behind the camera and in the edit bay, in HF he's been working more with his writers, in SP he's more involved in set design and costuming, and in BD he's involved with his sound guys and his stunt people. Totally a theory, but there does seem to be different parts of each of his films that are individually strong--on top of his already great direction.
It actually was used in my film school lmao
A movie Fan's dream. The editing, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the choreography. A damn near flawless film.
i seem to be in the minority when it comes to the editing i think edgar cuts too damn much. But that's my only complaint the fact that he doesn't shake the hell out of the camera makes me real happy.
PapiDarko The editing works for the most part but there are some incredible shots that last about only a couple seconds.
the only cuts i had a problem with was after the stop light where he gives 4 different angles of the same cop car crashing.
I was recently watching Bullet and i love the editing in that, of course it's a more subdue car chase and not as flashy. But the editing is fantastic.
