They do know. The sport is called weightlifting. That is why they made the joke.
The term "oly" is mainly used by crossfitters. Weightlifters usually call it "weightlifting", unless they have a background in crossfit or are much influenced by crossfit culture. (David says: "I think he means weightlifting").

No offence but the whole interview was kind of pointless. Whenever he would get into interesting stuff they would interrupt him with some pathetic attempt at comedy. I have observed this sort of "banter" culture in the UK and I didn't know it was present in Ireland. Very sad.
