This along with Blackened are my two fav on this album. I've ramped the volume up on this track hundreds of times to feel that heavy beat and riff. Love the anger and energy in this song. I think "Four Horsemen" (Kill Em All album) is the song that defines them the best.
Great insight Lily. From what I've read about this song is that the person was abused as a child (first verse) and than as a parent becomes the abuser of his child himself. The cycle continues and it becomes a "Harvester of Sorrow"
one of my favorite songs from justice, the pure energy is best felt when played live, to name asingle song that defines Metallica is nearly impossible, but you're getting close Dyers eve is one of the songs thst truly defines Jaymz mentality. it's only been a few years since he found inner peace and sobriety. his family has strengthened him, butin his youth he was full of rage and questions left unanswered for years.
AJFA album is Metallica’s “Let’s show everyone how technical we can be” album. Harvester features Lars’s kick drums equipped with clicks on the beaters that resemble tap dancer toes. So re listen and appreciate the repetition you mentioned as both feet pedals working the double base drums. Also featured in “One” that sounds like machine gun fire and the end of “Fade to Black”
This song is the first song I heard from this album, which wasn't even released yet. I went to Monsters of Rock tour, which was Van Halen's tour, and they were the main band, but had a lot of other bands on the bill. The whole show was 9 hours long, and Metallica were third from the top, after them came the Scorpions and then Van Halen. Anyways they were in between their huge album Master of Puppets, and their new album coming out, which was And Justice for All, but it hadn't been released yet, and no singles were even out yet. So they told the crowd "Do you want to hear a song from our new album", and of course, everybody screamed "hell yeah". This is the song they played, and everybody fucking loved it, including me, and it kicked ass!!!
You skipped a song again. You skipped "The Shortest Straw". You should absolutely react to the live version of this song from the concert in San Diego in 1992. You are right about the child abuse part of the song, although the final verse of the song talks about the main character in the song succumbing to the madness and murdering his own family as a result of the abuse he suffered as a child.

@@Nichwar19 it's just my opinion but I don't like it because it's too slow and repetitive regardless if that's their point to the song. You have a right to your opinion and can disagree.
Metallica’s Kill ‘em All is their first take on New wave of British Heavy Metal and content is based mostly on bringing the Head Banging to America. Lightning and Puppets content are all terrifying scenario based lyrics. Justice is them throwing down the technical gauntlet per say. More for themselves, keep in mind there is a reinvention going on, anger, sorrow, and misery from losing Cliff.
Metallica and Tool do similar things Lyrically that keep the song up to interpolation to the listener. All we know is it is about abuse they really don't go into detail. That is why music is so powerful.
@Mick Dokan tool is too slow to be metal. Hardly ever do they play like metal bands played in the 80s and 90s. Tool would be considered Hard Rock or progressive metal which is different.
Ride The Lightning defines Metallica perfectly. IMO that is the Best heavy metal album ever made by the hand of man and its the greatest Metallica album overall
She will get to it in a few weeks. She was going in order of the track listing of the album until she messed up and skipped "The Shortest Straw" on accident.
There are a lot of good songs that don't constantly repeat the chorus. Some are 2 or 3 words, some are 1/2 paragraph or bigger. Some don't use it until the end. I like the story tellers. A good, mellow one is "Summertime Rolls" by Jane's Addiction...
Fun fact, this song is not just repeative but its actually the slowest song that Metallica has ever created as it contains less beats in total length of the song than any other songs they have made.
This is literally one of, if not my favorite, Metallica song. It could be interpreted as a person being abused by a family member. Not being able to take any more of the abuse, ultimately killing their abuser. Their "loss" of life becomes the victim's "gain" of freedom.
One of the reasons why this song is repetitive is that it was released as a single, Metallica's first real attempt to get some radio play, but One ended up being the smash hit from the album. Harvester of Sorrow was a preview of what was to come in Metallica's musical direction, as every song in the followup was under 6 minutes long, and had similar song structures.
James' perants were very religious as he was a child. He is singing in this songabout that time as he grown up. If he got sick he couldn't go to the doctor or something. With every METALLICA-song he take a little revenge on them, about all that he didn't have. Including " HARVESTER OF SORROW ": Read the lines word by word and you can feel his pain he had in the past as he was akid.
It's probably sounding a bit repetitive to you because you've been listening to a lot of proggy sounding Metallica songs from the 80's that go for 8 minutes and are crammed with riffs (basically every other song on this album)

Fun fact! This is their slowest song by BPM!! But to answer you me question about what song describes Metallica. It would be seek and destroy. It’s a song for the fans and always their last song and it from their first album!
'Harvester of sorrow' was the first Metallica song I ever heard back in 1990 when I was a teen... it was different from anything I had heard from the usual 80's pop tunes... the guitars and drums stood out. The first hook to me becoming a fan was in... 🤘🤘 It's actually the most popular song on 'And justice for all' ... next to 'One' and 'Blackened'... 🔥🔥and Metallica used to crank it out regularly in concert. The fact is... 'Harvester of sorrow' was the Metallica track that changed the band's trajectory, going into the next album in 1991... James Hetfield wrote 2 heavy riffs for the 'Justice' album that were not the usual thrash metal tracks... one was 'Harvester of sorrow' and the other would become 'Sad but true' ... Lars Ulrich felt that 'Sad but true' would not fit the vibe of the album, so they worked on 'Harvester of sorrow' and it made it on the album. When Metallica was touring for 'Justice' in 1988/ '89, they noticed playing arenas that the audiences did not respond the same way as they did in smaller venues... Bigger crowds didn't know what to do when fast songs like 'Battery' were played live (except moshing)... but when they played 'Harvester of sorrow', the crowds responded by moving to the slower riffs and the reaction was bigger... it became a crowd favorite at the time. That was why Metallica opted to shed the faster thrash metal tempos and embrace a heavier groove on the 1991 'black' album... They wanted to appeal more without losing their edge... And it worked. 'Enter Sandman'... 'Sad but true'... 'Wherever I may roam' ...became huge favorites from that record and none had a thrash metal tempo, and arena and stadium crowds moved actively to the slower songs. It was also the time when bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins... were starting to make waves, and music was changing, crowd reactions were changing... the 80's were not happening any more by the time Nirvana broke big in 1991. I still don't understand why Metallica completely shed their metal sound in 1996 and embraced a more 90's rock sound w/ country and southern rock influences and slower tempos... We wanted Metallica in 1996 to be the champions of heavy and thrash metal, and bring back the aggression that was missing from the scene in the 90's. Instead, they put out 2 albums ('Load' and 'Reload') that basically cut their past loose and declared themselves 'free to play whatever they wanted'... Former bassist Jason Newsted said that he was not feeling those records, but he had little say in their creation... to this day, Newsted doesn't know which tracks are on what record from those 'Load' sessions. He wanted Metallica to be the iconic metal juggernaut that he had been a fan of before joining... but they were literally playing country songs and riffs that did not sound like traditional Metallica.
Lars is not a bad drumer. He just prefers simplicity at times. Does not mean he cant pull out a hundred hits in a second. He never followed a metal trends if they do not suit the song. I would say that Harverster of Sorrow has more drumming complexity to it than a slow paced song should even have. AJFA album is his best drumming to this date, and nothing else beats it.
This is my favorite album and I remember waiting months for it to drop. This is my favorite off this album and I believe it’s partly based on the religious beliefs of his mother who died and would see a Dr because of her religious beliefs. Prayer’s would do gods work.
@@markhammond4517 Sorry, but I'm going to call massive BS on this. Metallica is absolutely great live, you can see that on the San Diego performance from 1992 and the 1991 performance in Moscow which was very revolutionary for the hard rock and heavy metal world.
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the 'Infanticide' lyric, Miss Lilly. I think shouting it would have broken the intense mood this song spent so much time building up. Try listening to this one in the dark. It's Metallica's creepiest song by a country mile.

If the overall production of this album was better (more audible bass being the most obvious), it would be regarded as the best Metallica album made. It's easily my favorite and that's not taking a shot at any of their other masterpiece albums. This was a peak of Lars' drumming and the bands most "proggy" album. I can still listen to every track from start to finish without any issue to this day.

He wanted Metallica to be the iconic metal juggernaut that he had been a fan of before joining... but they were literally playing country songs and riffs that did not sound like traditional Metallica.
Load and Reload had some great songs though. Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Fixxer, King Nothing, Low Mans Lyric, and others.
@@ernestwhisenant1706 A lot of those records was boring and catered to the 90's audiences... Good songs, but not Metallica songs - 'Alternica' songs.
Check out Pantera floods and war eternal by arch enemy. They have a female vocalist.
No 1 song defines metallica
Great reaction to a great band and great song. Best live version of this song is from The Big 4 which I have the DVD of. 😀😃😄😁
That's incredibly hard one song to describe Metallica......... Off top of my head Metal Militia.
I can't decide if AJfA or MoPs is my favorite Metallica album.
I always thought that this song was meant to be a walk in intro for a wrestler or a boxer.
You need to watch this song live in Moscow Russia 1991.
Dyers Eve. :)
The live version from Moscow gives all the pure anger this song needed in the vocals. You'll love it. Magnitudes better than this version.
Metallica is not that great live unless your there.
@@markhammond4517 Sorry, but I'm going to call massive BS on this. Metallica is absolutely great live, you can see that on the San Diego performance from 1992 and the 1991 performance in Moscow which was very revolutionary for the hard rock and heavy metal world.
@@TokusatsuGamingfan you're not understanding go back and read my comment again.
@@markhammond4517 No, YOU are the one who's not understanding here.
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the 'Infanticide' lyric, Miss Lilly. I think shouting it would have broken the intense mood this song spent so much time building up. Try listening to this one in the dark. It's Metallica's creepiest song by a country mile.
I guess that's why I drink 🍻🍷 as my as I do
Song defined Metallica have a tattoo seen them in concert three times and they are my favorite band because I related to a lot of things that happened to me in life growing up with cerebral palsy and apparently didn’t understand it. I am 37 now and still jam them as my anthem music when I need a musical release, but their greatest masterpiece was and Hass to be master of puppets second to welcome home (sanitarium) please review one of the songs. Would love to see your reaction. Sincerely Brad sanders😎👍
😘
If the overall production of this album was better (more audible bass being the most obvious), it would be regarded as the best Metallica album made. It's easily my favorite and that's not taking a shot at any of their other masterpiece albums. This was a peak of Lars' drumming and the bands most "proggy" album. I can still listen to every track from start to finish without any issue to this day.
This is why you need Pantera!!!! Mouth For War 🤘🏼
She's reacted to Pantera in the past. Whoever is in charge of Pantera's catalogue kept blocking her reaction videos though so she had to blur the content from the music videos.
She's done Metallica, some Megadeth, and some Slayer so far. I wonder what she'll think about the other thrash metal bands that helped form the genre such as Exodus, Testament, and Venom. LOL oh man, Lilly Janes reacts to Venom, that would be interesting indeed!
Childhood? Wait until you get to "Dyers Eve" 😅
Can't wait for you to do Dyer's Eve!
The shortest straw next
LILY JANE WHEN WILL YOU DO A DEF LEPPARD REVIEW TOO
If I were ranking them (and ranking them is like ranking my favorite Sunny day) this would be my last favorite Metallica song on and justice for All.
You've reacted to some of metallicas best songs so far, you've checked out alot of their thrash Era music. You haven't really dug into their 90s aside from some of the black album ( I really wish you would react to sad but true from that album.) You should dig into the load and reload albums, they will not disappoint. Keep up the good work 👏
The "most Metallica song" to me can be only one - "One" ;) \m/
it would be master of puppets
