AJFA was the first album Metallica released after the death of Cliff Burton, their bass player on their 1st three albums. Jason Newstead was chosen to replace him, but had not earned the trust or respect of Hetfield and Ulrich yet.
@poloreacts27 you should do a reaction to this song live from Moscow, it's INSANE! Over 1.5 million fans, the end of the Soviet era, guards fighting the crowd, the crowd not backing down, it's wild
This album is my favorite piece of art. Their best friend and bassist, Cliff Burton had just died and this album is angry...Thank you for these Metallica reactions. You rule Bro!
Metallica's worst song is better than that song, lmao! The drums from any song on the And Justice For All album are miles above "Territory". Also, definitely wouldn't call Sepultura a legendary metal band.
The sound of the riffs and crunch of AJFA was never heard by any other band at that time or since. The sound boards and mixers used were truly unique. MASTERPIECE
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs… back when I was 14 and listening to it on the bus on the way to school… and still is now that I’m 47. Love the beat and guitars. Also Pink Floyd is legendary…
The "bass" comment was a joke because the track (and the 1988 album 'And justice for all') had the bass faded out! (They compensated w/ guitar reverb) ... The story was: this was the first album recorded since the death of Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton in a tour bus accident in 1986... The traumatized Metallica decided to carry on and hired new bassist Jason Newsted in late '86 to tour and recorded an EP of covers released in 1987. But the transition for the new bassist was a tough one... While on the road between 1986 to 1988, Jason Newsted was subjected to drunken hazing by the Metallica camp... If James, Lars or Kirk missed Cliff... something bad usually happened to Jason... He said the first night, they broke into his hotel room and dumped his stuff out the window after flipping his bed over... "Welcome to the band, pal!" Jason found himself inundated w/ rumors that he was gay... he found his room charged w/ the band's drinking bill the night before... Looking back, the bassist admits that he understood that the band wanted to know if he was tough enough to handle the less-than-ideal situation. Guitarist Kirk Hammett admitted that the bassist was made the scapegoat of the loss of Cliff Burton... But when the band was recording 'And justice for all' in 1988, Jason Newsted finished his tracks before Metallica went back on tour... James and Lars oversaw the mixing process and the drummer Lars Ulrich demanded that Jason's bass tracks be faded out so that his drums were more focused... the rhythm guitars be the dominant sound. Of course, when Jason heard the final mixes on tour, he was "livid"... but the album was already done, and he didn't have any power within Metallica to make any changes... being the "new kid"... 'And justice for all' did incredibly well in sales... 'One' became the first Metallica music video... and 'Harvester of sorrow' became a fan fave because it went over great in concert... There were better tracks - 'Eye of the beholder'... 'Blackened'... but the album was also very long w/ extended jamming... The 10 minute 'To live is to die' was a tribute to Cliff Burto, and mostly instrumental w/ a brief spoken word section.
Little piece of trivium: “And Justice for All” was Metallica’s first album after Cliff died. They admitted it was the angriest they’d been as a band. The whole album is aggressive in way that reflects pure anger at life and death. You can hear their individual struggles and frustrations mixed with their collective frustration in this song very clearly. In this way, I find it to be one of their best songs.
the bass thing is in reference to the fact that this album hides most of the bass work and it's generally kind of infamous for just that fact amongst the metal community. there's even a video of a guy who re-recorded a much louder bass part for the album and he plays thru it here on youtube. still a killer album even without the bass turned up..
Live Tallica is honestly better than the studio versions. There are so many great versions of this song. There was a really great one on one of the Black album singles that was always my go to version. Probably from the legendary Moscow concert I think.
I heard this song before the album was released in 1988, they played it on the Monsters of Rock tour the summer before the album came out. Still my favorite Metallica song. Also, I've watched about 20 POLO REACTS videos and still am not sure what he looks like because I can't stop staring at that thing in the background - it's f**king mesmerizing.
For me it was Giants Stadium in NJ. What a day... From Metallica dominating through EVH holding the crowd in his plan for his solo. At least 50% of the people there were wearing Metallica shirts and they played second of 5 bands... The tide was turning already..
Harvester is one of a few Metallica songs that needs the live performance, the album track is too mechanical. It's slower, heavier, crunchier... and so it needs the bounce and swagger that the live performance brings it. And that awkward pause before the last lyric section ("......All have said their prayers") is actually in there because it's a several seconds long pause on stage that just funnels the crowd's anticipation directly onto the stage for the band to feast on.
This Metallica masterpiece is highly complimented LIVE 1991 SEPT -MOSCOW- 1.6 MIL crazy ass Russians. Good Luck coming off of that. Its a whole different experience. Need to see
Speaking on the comment you mentioned, The Justice album was the first album with Jason Newsted after Cliff died. As the story goes, during production, Lars told the engineers to turn the bass down until you can barely hear it, then turn it down some more. There were some serious emotions on display for this one. Still a great album, however. Very drum heavy.
@@ChuckUpchuck Correct and I saw them during the tour for that album. About 90 percent of their US tour dates were in 1989 not '88. I saw them again for the black album tour 3 years later.

He joked about the bass because this album is historically infamous because they released it with the bass guitar down almost completely cut out of the mix. It still has bass in the mix from thew guitars and drums but notice the distinct lack of a bassline.
Four Horsemen, Orion, To live is to die, Unforgiven III, Disposable Heroes, Bleeding Me, Leper Messiah, Damage Inc., Suicide Redemption, My friend of Misery(some bass for ya) I'm pretty sure they would be proud of the Pink Floyd reference
I'd like to make a Metallica suggestion to you. It's actually a cover song from the band 'Budgie". When I saw Metallica in August 1994 in Miami, that was the song they opened with and their version of it just hits hard! They released it on the B side on two singles from this "In Justice For All" album and officially released it on their cover album Garage Inc. It's catchy, energetic and relevant. A song about a persons relationship with money and what to do with it once you have it. Are you reckless? Do you give it away? Do you trust people etc...? It was remastered in 2018.
If you like it hear the sound of a bass guitar look no further than, "Murder" by David Gilmore . There is a fretless bass solo in it that will take you where you want to go!! You will love it POLO . David Gilmore "Murder". Thank you POLO
As a compare and contrast it might be worth reacting to the 1991 Moscow version of this. Truly both honest to the original and distinguished from it at the same time.
The comment around bass made me laugh hysterically! That could’ve been taken a few ways one of which song is missing bass. The second part of it is that Jason Newsted is their new bass player for this album. Once the album was done, the story goes in the mixing room Lars turned down all of the bass levels so his drums were more prevalent throughout the whole album.
Funny about the bass comment. This whole album has the best sounding drums of any Metallica album. Also some are these song are so loved because you’d pop the cassette or CD in and drive or whatever. The song was part of something greater. Now everything is a single.
Metallica is a deep deep rabbit hole my dude. The first 3 albums had the legendary Cliff Burton on bass. The entire Master Of Puppets album showcases how a great bass player (and songwriter) makes all the difference. Cliff was killed when their bus crashed while on tour for the Master Of Puppets album. Their music was never the same. This album has Jason Newsted on bass. More recently they got Robert Trujillo. Rob was in Suicidal Tendencies back in the 80s/90s, a punk/funk band. Check out VH1 Behind The Music Metallica.
This is my favorite song from Metallica. BUT just because it's my favorite, doesn't mean it has to be yours. I appreciate your honesty and genuine analysis. Keep doing what you do man.

Check out until it sleeps or hero of the day, later tracks from the band, you get to hear how James's voice evolved (sounds like silk being dragged down a gravel road) and there is some beautiful solos there. Again, it's another different type of sound, but still so Metallica.

"Harvester of Sorrow" is a song by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 28, 1988, as the first single from their fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). The song's subject matter refers to a man who descends into madness, taking out his anger on his family. At the end of the song, it is hinted his sanity snaps and he murders them. In my opinion this was their greatest album. Lyrics below: My life suffocates, planting seeds of hate I've loved, turned to hate, trapped far beyond my fate I give, you take this life that I forsake Been cheated of my youth, you've turned this lie to truth Anger, misery You'll suffer unto me Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow Pure black looking clear, my work is done soon here Try getting back to me, get back which used to be Drink up, shoot in, let the beatings begin Distributor of pain, your loss becomes my gain Anger, misery You'll suffer unto me Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow All have said their prayers Invade their nightmares To see into my eyes You'll find where murder lies Infanticide Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad) Harvester of sorrow Harvester of sorrow Harvester of sorrow Harvester of sorrow Harvester of sorrow Harvester of sorrow
You should please check out the song "ONE". In my opinion, the best Metallica song in their catalogue!! I guarantee you will love it. Oh, and it's quite sad also.
Well, the bass comment was not about your race or culture. What he was referreing to was that the bass was mixed to the point of being nonexistant in the "And Justice for All" album. It has been a sticking point for decades now.
My breakdown: this is a song about abortion. #HearMeOut #SadSong 1. first section is the girl going to get an abortion. "I loved, turned to hate." "...been cheated of my youth" 2. second section: told from the view point of the doctor: "pure black, looking clear" is an abortion term used during the ultrasound to ensure there are no body parts left in the womb. "Get back what used to be" 3. third section: told from the perspective of the aborted baby: INFANTICIDE! "All have said their prayer, invade their nightmares, to see into my eyes...you'll find where murder lies" "Infanticide." 😢😭

Been cheated of my youth, you've turned this lie to truth
Anger, misery
You'll suffer unto me
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow
Pure black looking clear, my work is done soon here
Try getting back to me, get back which used to be
Drink up, shoot in, let the beatings begin
Distributor of pain, your loss becomes my gain
Anger, misery
You'll suffer unto me
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow
All have said their prayers
Invade their nightmares
To see into my eyes
You'll find where murder lies
Infanticide
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow (language of the mad)
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Harvester of sorrow
Creeping Death live Moscow 1991 and The Day That Never Comes
They started the live show with this
You should please check out the song "ONE". In my opinion, the best Metallica song in their catalogue!! I guarantee you will love it. Oh, and it's quite sad also.
I mowed the lawn to this cassette tape :)
Two tracks you need to listen to and read the lyrics.
'And Justice for All!'
And
'Eye of the beholder '
It's about the Justice and political system.
Try trapped under ice. Great Metallica song.
If you want to hear the bass listen to a newer version live of this sing ... Rob is killing it
Harvester of Sorrow Live hits even harder.
If you want the bass get yourself an equalizer and tune it up... this masterpiece was done for a reason...
man, check out "orion". amazing composition from metallica
Well, the bass comment was not about your race or culture. What he was referreing to was that the bass was mixed to the point of being nonexistant in the "And Justice for All" album. It has been a sticking point for decades now.
Greatest metal album ever. Period.
You need to listen to some Clutch "the Mob Goes Wild" or "Electric Worry".
My breakdown: this is a song about abortion. #HearMeOut #SadSong
1. first section is the girl going to get an abortion. "I loved, turned to hate." "...been cheated of my youth"
2. second section: told from the view point of the doctor: "pure black, looking clear" is an abortion term used during the ultrasound to ensure there are no body parts left in the womb. "Get back what used to be"
3. third section: told from the perspective of the aborted baby: INFANTICIDE! "All have said their prayer, invade their nightmares, to see into my eyes...you'll find where murder lies" "Infanticide."
😢😭
That thingie in the background reminds me of Kevin Samuels. Anyway, ty for reacting to one of my top 5 bands!
A gift from me to you brother, Toxic Holocaust- New World Beyond 🤘
You’re getting into some good stuff. Not sure I’ve seen you do Black Sabbath yet. If and when you do I think you’d dig Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots
This song is sick 😆
