An estimated 90% of patients use their metered dose inhaler incorrectly. Inadequate inhaler technique lowers drug deposition to the lungs, wastes medication and may lead to poor disease control, reduced quality of life, increased emergency hospital admissions and higher treatment costs.
Please spread the word to friends and family - Like, Share & Tag a Friend. So they can also master their inhaler technique and manage their respiratory condition better.
COMMON INHALER TECHNIQUE MISTAKES:
• Not breathing out first. When you breathe out fully (or as much as you comfortably can) just before taking your inhaler, you create more space in your airways for your next breath in. This means that you can breathe in deeper and for longer when you inhale your asthma medicine - giving it the best chance of reaching the small airways deep inside your lungs, and being most effective.
• Not holding your breath after taking your inhaler. If you've been advised to hold your breath after taking in your inhaler, it's very important to do so. When you hold your breath after inhaling the medicine, you are keeping your airways still. This gives more time for the medicine to get into your lungs. If you can hold your breath for 10 seconds, this is ideal but if this isn't possible, you will still benefit by holding it for as long as you feel comfortable.
• Not priming the aerosol inhaler device Aerosol inhalers require priming (so you get the right amount of medicine when you use it) before using for the first time, or if they have not been used for a while - always refer to information leaflet.
• Not shaking your MDI before use and between puffs. If you don't shake the canister, the asthma medicine and propellant (the substance which helps turn the medicine into aerosol form) will not mix together properly and too much or too little of one will be released.
• Inhaling too early before pressing the canister. If you're already half way through breathing in by the time the medicine is released from the inhaler, you won't have enough time to finish breathing in all the medicine because your lungs will already be full. If this happens, some of the medicine will end up being sprayed in your mouth and hitting the back of your throat and not being carried down to your lungs where it's needed.
• Inhaling too late after pressing the canister (unless you're using a spacer). It takes less than half a second from the time the canister is pressed for all the medicine inside the inhaler to be released. If you breathe in after this time, some of the medicine will end up being sprayed in your mouth and not to your lungs where it's needed.
• Not leaving enough time between doses. You need to give your inhaler a good shake between doses and then wait at least 30 to 60 seconds before taking the next puff.
JUST ASK:
If you're ever unsure about your inhaler technique always double check with your pharmacist, nurse practitioner or GP.

Ordered mine today due to covid. It triggers my asthma when I was a kid. Now I'm already negative but still having difficulties to breathe, and I can hear the whistling sound when I'm breathing. Hoping covid will stop soon. 🙏🏻 I'm praying for everyone especially us with asthma and heart problem, I know the feeling, it's very hard 🥺
Update:
I just used it now and immediately felt the comfort of breathing. For whoever discovered this medicine--thank you so much.
Glad I coud help :)

I'm here, I discovered I have allergic asthma at 25... but we can do it yeah 😃
I have had asthma since I was a teenager, but it wasn't diagnosed until 30 😑 They said I just had allergies, but I get bronchitis 2-3 times a year. Finally someone listened! We can do it *cough cough*!😷🙌
Severe allergic rhinitis here which obviously gives severe asthma whenever exposed to allergens. You want to control your asthma control the allergens.
Im so glad this was here getting an inhaler for the first time and i use pill pack so no counter to ask a pharmasist how to use it and no idea if instructions come with it

Lovely Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Xiyatalie Stamina Stampede (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good one of a kind guide for lasting 19 minutes longer in bed tonight and 31 minutes next week minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my best friend Jordan at last got cool results with it.
Thankyou for this! I got prescribed an inhaler for the first time and wasn't really sure how to use. And cannot see my doctor in person because of the covid 19 and she gave me not great instructions. But this was very very helpful

Great advice
Yeah.... Even I got prescribed an inhaler and I was quite not sure whether I should be using it or not.... But after watching this video.. I’m definitely going to give this a shot... until now I used to take only tablets whenever I feel difficult in breathing ...
Just about to get my first inhaler for asthma; my dad has had severe asthma his whole life and is away for work, glad I had this guide to show me how to properly use an inhaler. Thank you!

Thanks, I'm 41 years old & its my 1st time needing an inhaler due to covid. Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
May I ask why so late.
I just got one due to Covid too!
Same just wasted three puff
Me too!
Great job concisely explaining the proper inhaler technique. Some many patients are using it incorrectly and even practitioners instructing their patients to not use the closed mouth technique.

Last night I was diagnosed with allergy induced asthma. While I've been using a ventolin since December, I never knew that you were supposed to prime the inhaler. Thankfully I was otherwise using it right though 👍 Now on Clenil Modulite 200 as well. Subscribed to this channel now.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this video.
After being Nebulized, and was verbally thought how to use the inhaler by the pharmacist,
I kept Wondering why the tightening and wheezing refuse to subside. I even met with a physician who was to busy to take time out and just told me how to position it and said i should read the leaflets.
Just tried this and felt relieved few minutes after trying this out. Thanks a great deal
You are so welcome!

God bless you , because of you I can use it well

It’s been nearly two years I’ve been on an inhaler. Originally for swimming because the chlorine would literally suffocate me. Wasn’t so bad at first, I could swim as long as I had taken two puffs about 15 minutes before swimming. Now I can’t even get in the pool past my lung area. Not sure why this is happening, but my mom said every body is different and this is just one of my differences. Agreed very much. But just last year I’ve kinda given up on swimming. Since then I’ve been having a hard time breathing due to seasonal allergies, mostly in spring and summer. Thankfully Fall and Winter give me a nice break. I don’t have asthma.
When I first got the Inhaler my Mom didn’t think twice about teaching me how to use it. I know it was just an honest mistake and I’m not the slightest bit mad at her, I honestly find it funny. So I didn’t ask her I just searched on yt how to use one. This was the first video I watched and I learned off of this video on how to use mine. Life saver lol. I still go off only this information to this day. Don’t know a lot about inhalers but he basically goes over the basics and what you need to know. Lol just felt like sharing a story, :)
Thank you for that Abraham. The point about priming the inhaler is often forgotten. I shall be pointing my patients to your video in further.
