  • The AFL as we know it today began life as an expanded VFL with new teams joining the Victorian League.
    But what if the AFL had been built by relocating the already existing VFL teams.
    Would you have preferred a relocated VFL ?

    Let's relocate Collingwood to Norfolk Island. I'd be down with that.

    Richmond was busted in mid 1980s, as was Collingwood. So under your model the Tigers would have been under immense pressure to move too.

    • @Adam-XL
      @Adam-XL 6 месяцев назад

      yep, people quickly forget that fact, in the mid 80s Richmond came close to playing 11 away games in Brisbane to be the defacto Queensland club, what would now be called a co-location

      @@Adam-XL Richmond and Collingwood was in major strife as they overspent. Eagles and Bears brought $8m (1987 money) and huge tv royalties and saved clubs.

    Interesting idea, I’ve wondered the same thing. Although Melbourne would have to stay since there needs to be a team called Melbourne and would be better for either Richmond, Essendon or Carlton to move elsewhere

    • @mattn1
      @mattn1  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah that’s true, definitely could have seen Richmond being forced to move back in the day

    A Port Adelaide relocation wouldn't make sense because Port was already an existing team. It would have to be a new place in Adelaide like Salisbury or Marion. TBH I feel like in this situation Norwood and Port would have entered the league themselves over a 2nd relocation. Send the Kangaroos to Canberra IMO then the ACT would have the emblem of Australia representing the capital.

    I'm interested in tinkering with football jumpers. Everyone likes major jumper changes. But I'm interested in how minor changes can cause big improvements and reduce the need for alternative strips. Essendon can make sash a bit larger and have red trimmings. If not too over the top the fans will buy it. St Kilda jumper red at the back. Or red trimmings. Richmond gold trimmings and larger sash, Numbers white with black outline. Footscray bring in the bulldog on front and more red stripe and trimmings. Melbourne, deeper red V. Sydney red at front and back. Or white at front with deeper red V and logo... and so on.

    Im not gonna lie, this is exactly how I have envisioned this so so long, and finally someone has the same idea. I personally don't believe as many clubs would have relocated or forcefully relocated, but goddamn I love this so far. I do believe the Lions & Dogs would have replaced Navy with Gold & replaced Red & White with Gold as well, while the Hawks & Roos to me probs maybe would have added Red for SA or changed their colour to stand out a bit more, such that North could have gone w/ a Light Blue or Teal & changed to Black just to be different

    • @mattn1
      @mattn1  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah I wonder if any teams would have changed their colours, South Melbourne never did but it’s fun to see these different designs in other colours

      @@mattn1 There was talk of Sydney changing their colours about 20 years ago when they were struggling. Talk was light blue and dark blue like NSW. Also clubs like Saints had a chance to go to Brisbane years before and Bulldogs to Sydney. But both didn't take the opportunity.

  • @BDub2024
    @BDub2024 7 месяцев назад +1

    This is a crazy you're having there, but I kind of like it. How many people are you going to upset though. Western Bulldogs, go to the West Coast. I like that. Melbourne adopt the same chevrons that Freo have now. Actually do you see how good that jumper actually looks! Compared to Freo's current white chevrons. How good would Freo look with green white and red chevrons, their traditional colours. But I like your dream of Melbourne with the red chevrons. Even there is no way they would have left Melbouren. It would have been a merger.

    Honestly, the only teams who should be in Victoria, should be Melbourne and Geelong, they are the oldest AFL clubs and some of the oldest sporting clubs in the world, the predate every other AFL club by years, nobody else deserves a spot in Victoria apart from those two, being names after the largest and second largest cities in Victoria, as opposed to being named after a suburb like every other Victorian team.

      Nah, hard disagree, I reckon this is a pretty shallow take looking past the deep history of the clubs in favour of superficial reasons.

      No matter what you think Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon are both the biggest and most successful football clubs in the AFL.
      Carlton is only six or seven years younger than the clubs you mentioned. That's splitting hairs.
      Victorian football is fierce and a huge part of our state identity.
      It was bad enough we lost Fitzroy and South Melbourne... no need to take any more.

    Why relocate Collingwood to Port Adelaide to called the Port Adelaide Magpies and the club wear black and white prison bar?
    Why you want relocation club like Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and Stians not could like Collingwood, Hawks, Bombers because you go and those clubs if you do you not being fair
