I’m a football (soccer) fan as most of the Brazilians, however, I love Rugby and Aussie Rules as well. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to go to Australia but I’ve been watching the AFL since 2017 and now I’m teaching my kids how to play during my lessons (I’m P.E Teacher). Greetings from Brazil Aussie mates!
You are a legend mate! Good on ya
That’s amazing! Love seeing people spread the sport around the world! I find it easy to understand compared to rugby, especially the process of scoring. Here in australia, 95% of ovals have afl goals at each end!
Australia calls it soccer so thank you
@@zakwickham136 I'm very aware of the Socceroos mate
That's awesome to hear mate. Hopefully you can get over some day.
Great video, I think it would be great if you could maybe do videos on each of the seperate clubs history’s I think it would be interesting and suit your style. Keep it up
Thanks mate, I’ll definitely consider that 👍🏻
the bulldogs had a time in the late 80s were they were nearly kicked out of the afl. as a bulldogs fan it would have been nice to see a bit of that mentioned but all around great video learnt heaps of new stuff 👍👍
Thanks mate 👍🏻
I worked nearby the Western Oval at the time. Even though I am a Saints Supporter I have probably given more to the Bulldogs. The Plant's Shop Stewart (a Hawks Supporter) would ask for money to help the Bulldogs nearly every payday.
Wait, people go for the bulldogs?
@@bbqsnag8381 yes i do ?
It seems like in 2022 people want North Melbourne kicked out . I say to those people, F..K YOU
I’m a refugee here since 9 years now and I’m getting my PR soon at last… so I’m feeling secure here as I can call this place home at last, and I want to strengthen my Aussie culture and accent🥰
Canadian AFL fan that watched the last three seasons. didn't know the league was region based till the 80's that's crazy
Yeah it’s made for a very lopsided league with roughly half the teams from one state
The problem with the Victorians is they think they had the only league in the country , when in fact Western Australia and South Australia had competitions that matched them in every way possible. If your interested in the AFL before it became the AFL there was a state game played between Western Australia and Victoria in 1986 where the states best players played each other. In that game 41 goals were kicked and in my opinion probably the best game of Australian football ever played.
ps
The Victorians lost that game.
Hundsucker Proxy how come the AFL is based around the Victorian league? why didn't the Victorian league merge with south and west leagues to make the AFL? was no one interested ?
@@MegaGlupe yeah good question , but I have no idea why , if I was to guess I'd say it's because Melbourne has the bigger population of the cities and another guess would be in the Victorians way of thinking nothing really exists outside of Victoria. Also the Victorians somehow managed to sign a deal so no grand final can be played on any ground other than the MCG for about a hundred years or there abouts , but whatever the case they're a bias bunch.
Andrew Giroux The reason is stated in the video, $$$$$
Really interesting vid to watch I’m give this vid a like
Good job 👍😀
Thanks mate 👍🏻

Wasn't it the VFA which started in 1852 or so? later becoming the VFL. Also, i personally thought u should of mentioned SA and WA having their own leagues which were very popular up until the VFL became the AFL. All being one of the reasons which they chose to have clubs in those states. Also reason why tassy may be next as they have a strong football tradition down there
The VFA and the VFL were always seperate, although teams did move from the VFA to the VFL
I kept the WAFL and SANFL out of it as this video was focussing on the AFL and it’s history
@@mattn1 ah okay. Cheers mate. Its nice theres finally a video out there on the history
Harry Everett yeah I was surprised there wasn’t something like it already
the vfa started in 1877
@@adrianbarichievich7756
Yes, the VFA began in 1877 and eight teams broke away and formed the VFL in 1897. However Melbourne formed 1859 , Geelong 1859, Carlton 1864, North Melbourne 1869, South Melbourne 1874 ( now Sydney) , plus St. Kilda and other teams, some defunct, played in a competition for 17 years in Melbourne which preceded the VFA, from 1859 to 1876.
Great video, as an avid afl supporter I didn’t even know some of those facts because they were before my time. Good job Matt 👍
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Hawthorn "Hawks" were actually called the "Mayblooms" until 1943.
Good thing they changed 😂
@@mattn1 Something tells me someone's wife had way too much input somewhere along the line. No self-respecting bloke is calling his footy team "the Mayblooms". 😉
And Melbourne were called the Fuschia's
@@tezzalenko And now they're just the pansies. yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk....
@@jimlaw8199 that's being very kind
A well done video but very remiss of you not to mention the VFA and more importantly Marngrook considering this game has been played by the first Australians for a time well before anyone can document. The video finished with a vague comment of Tasmania within 5-10 years. You probably could have mentioned that the AFL announced a provisional license with the expectation the side will debut in 2025. Other than that well done
This video is a history of the league and it’s teams, not a history of the sport
Well researched and put-together video. Good job!
Thanks mate 👍🏻
your videos are always rlly good keep it up they are interesting
Thanks mate, glad you like them 👍🏻
I was looking for some videos about AFL teams' history on AFL official channel other days. Apparently, your video is quite informative and it really helps out.
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Another good video.
What I would say, is not a lot of history before 1982.
All the clubs too were formed well before 1897.
Next stop
A NT team
The Northern Crocodiles or the Northern Territory Thunder!-2024
And a tassie team
Either relocating the Kangaroos or a new team called the Tassie Devils-2022
Sounds good to me 👍🏻
Don’t touch the kangas mate we are a proud team from Melbourne
When talking about foundation in 1897; Swans, Demons, Lions, Bombers, and Cats did not exist yet as nicknames for those clubs.
The reason why University struggled was that their players had to be students - they were unable to recruit star players from other teams.
And their were a number of other reasons
this was an awesomely made video, great quality! liked :)
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Well made video mate. This video subject could easily go on for a 30 minute video loved that you kept it short and sweet. A lot more people will watch knowing they dont have to commit a solid 30 minutes
Thanks mate, short and sweet was definitely the aim
Awesome vid
Thanks mate 👍🏻
You should do Worst Guernseys of Each AFL Team🎽
Nice
Essendon weren't called the Bombers, when the competition first started. They started getting called that after world war 2, being close the airfields in Essendon, were airforce planes were stationed. I think they were called the Same Olds when they first started. I'm pretty sure they had that name at some point, and then the Dons. And South Melbourne were called the Bloods before the Swans. They might have even have had another name around the turn of the century. They got the name the Swans, after they won the flag in 1933, and went on a nation wide recruiting effort, getting a lot of players from near the Swan River in Western Australia. Hence the name.
I really didn't know as much about AFL as I do now also nice video
Thanks mate 👍🏻
People forget about part Adelaide SANFL good record
I love the video! Keep up the work
please do more of this type of content, its bloody amazing
Thanks mate, there’s 3 more videos in this series on the channel atm, check them out if you haven’t already
There’s one on the rivalries, one on state of origin and one on the Adelaide crows (the plan was to make one for each team but unfortunately those videos didn’t do too well)
I’m subscribing for some more good content like this
There’s a bunch more like it already on the channel
I learnt heaps. Great video
Thanks mate 👍🏻
I'm not into footy that much but I do know AFL is a combination of Rugby and Marngrook an indigenous ball game. There's a couple of videos about this on RUclips if you want to further into the history.
GO THE TIGS
Tigs?
I love this
Thanks mate 👍🏻
That’s ok mate it’s great and hopefully there will be a tasmania team and Northern Territory team to come!
I hope that there will be a tassie team soon
Yeah it should happen sooner rather than later
I think within the next couple of years they’re trying to get back into the VFL and if all goes well, their goal is to get to the AFL by 2025
Great video. love the graphics.
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Just waiting for this Taz team 😍
There should be the Hobart Hogs
Interesting
Loved the footage from the demolition derby, I was at that game!
It must’ve been pretty crazy
Great job
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Awesome video🤙
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Interesting video
I did the same as draught leader71
awesome summary!
Thanks mate 👍🏻
anybody watching as of may 3rd 2023 now that tassie just got an afl licence?
Next time maybe show us the team jumpers
Got love a eagles dockers and crows and power derby
Good vid
Thanks mate 👍🏻
nice vid bruh
Thanks mate 👍🏻
This is cool
Thanks 👍🏻
The VFL was a breakaway competition from the VFA. So a lot of the VFL teams have around for a lot longer. So, for instance, Carlton started in 1864 which means you have ignored over 30 years of history.
Also in 1996 the kangaroos and lions almost merged to become the north Fitzroy kangaroos. I’m glad the kangas have stayed strong and remained in north Melbourne
Tasmania has a team
THE HAWKS
we are both Victorian and Tasmanian
Most our home games are there.
You play like 4 games there a year, Tasmania deserves its own team that plays 11 games there a year
Matt N the hawks can move to Tasmania, what team do you go for by the way.
university 'left' (they actually disbanded) because all of their players joined the army as the first world war started, not because they were loosing, their player all joined the aif
losing*
No they did not. University was a strictly amateur club and was having difficulty keeping pace with clubs that were paying players. The players mostly joined melbourne which at the time was the other amateur club. WW1 definitely posed difficulties for all clubs but to say that it is solely responsible for the demise of University as a VFL club or to claim that ALL university's players left to join the AIF would bith be erroneous.
Actually you are wrong South Melbourne did move to Sydney. but Fitzroy does not have any official association to Brisbane. Brisbane basically was given some remaining Fitzroy players, but I dont know how you can claim it was a merger were any members of Fitzroy Board or anything else incorporated into Brisbane Just players (although eventually Brisbane adopted the old Fitzroy mascot of Lions.) AFL Records do not share any History between the two clubs
Sign a petition to make tasi a team
It’ll happen sooner rather than later I think
Fitzroy were originally called the Gorillas before becoming the Lions. Hawthorn likewise were originally the Mayblooms before becoming the Hawks.
Hope the AFL creates a Hobart team. I could see a potential for a team labelled Tasmania, but I think it would be good to keep it at Hobart and consider adding Launceston if Hobart picks up. If only one team will be in Tasmania, there needs to then be a 20th team. I find it unlikely that anywhere in the Northern Territory would be able to hold a strong football club at this stage, and find it more likely that another more regional team in NSW is born, preferably Newcastle
They’d name it Tasmania and have them play half their games in Hobart and half in Launceston I reckon, the 20th team will probably come from WA I reckon, perhaps bring subi into the afl as they’re clearly too dominant in the WAFL
Matt N it would definitely be a good idea for Subiaco to join the AFL. What do u think the chances are that Perth itself will ever get a club?
What a great vid ....I enjoyed that ....I knew nothing about North Melbourne thinking about going to Queensland tho WOWW 😳😳😱
Yeah it’s pretty crazy
@@mattn1
Yeah lucky they didnt ....Can imagine Roos fans going off thr nuts if they did?? 😱😱😳
Lea Magpies Evans yeah I couldn’t imagine what that’d be like as a fan
I reckon Darwin rangers and Alice spring bulls I haven’t thought of tasi team yet
Essendon Same Old's in 1897.. There were no planes that dropped bombs in Australia then..
Thank you
I think Fitzroy were called the Maroons, when they first started.
Yeah that sounds familiar
yes I did
Geelong were originally called pivetonians
Tasmainian devils maybe?
how fitting would it be if Tasmania did enter the competition and were known as the tasmanian tigers... but richmond already have that name
They’d be the tassie devils
Melbourne football club est. 1852?
Horthorn demons or Melbourne hawks which one is better
Harthorn demons: like
Melbourne hawks : comment
i thought that the Northen Terrortorie was sponserd by the crows
I think that’s just AFLW
Demons play there too I think
No the demons do
It was south melbourne bloods and essendon dons the bombers only became the bombers after ww2
Xavier Sirianni South Melbourne were actually the bloodstained angels, bloods for short ;)
Personally I would like to see either Gold Coast or one of the Victorian teams relocate to Tasmania. South Melbourne and Fitzroy were still able to maintain a big supporter base in Melbourne after their relocations so a struggling Victorian team could be convinced to go to Tassie.
It’d be hard to get anyone to relocate and I think Tasmania want their own team not just a relocated one
Matt N We sure do want our own team one thing that my mates and I were saying though Is that they wouldn’t have a huge fan base Because we know personally that none of us would want to stop barracking for our current teams, me for example Sydney
@@franklin2325 Yeah I think that is one of the main benefits of having a relocated team; you already have a developed fanbase. Plus the Sydney Swans and Brisbane are still very much their respective cities' "own team". It's easy to forget sometimes that they are relocated teams. The bonus is, they also have strong fanbases in Victoria (and Tassie like the Nathan here).
Why am I watching this....
I came to see gws
GWS are in there
Yeh I k
This was awesome! Any other bombers fans?
Thanks mate 👍🏻
My AFL Expansion teams from 2021 to 2030 ideas and Alternate futures
2022-Tasmanian Devils Enter the AFL After spending 2021 in the VFL. They will play at Blundstone Arena and Launceston Stadium as their main grounds and will train either at North Hobart Oval or Kingston Twins Oval. There possible Rivals are the North Melbourne Kangaroos ‘The Bass Strait Bash’ and the reason why I reckon it will be a rivalry is because North Melbourne Have a strong connection to Tasmania and they play 4 games a year in Hobart and even were considered to Move Their after they were a small Club in Melbourne and needed a new base. Hawthorn Hawks is another Possible Rivalry as the Hawks play 5 games in Launceston every year.
2023-Northern Thunder Enter the AFL in 2023 as 2021 they were an AFL NAB League team and spent the 2022 Season in the SANFL Getting their facilities up to AFL Standard. They will play at the TIO Stadium in Darwin as their main Home Venue and they also play 8 games a year in Alice Springs. The Possible Rivals of the Thunder is the Adelaide Crows because of the Strong connection between the Club and the State in General it would make sense for a bit of a Rivalry of the 2 Clubs facing each other a year and also the Women’s AFL Crows team also have a big connection to the NT because they play 1 game their a year so the possible names of the Derby is ‘The Top End Derby’. Another possible Rival is the Melbourne Demons because of the Clubs impact of the Indigenous Communities supporting the Club from the Demons helping out making Grass Ovals and new Football Facilities for the Community to use, they also play some games up in Darwin and Alice Springs too. Gold Coast Suns are a possible one as they signed a new connection with the NT.
2025-Gold Coast Suns rename time the Gold Coast Sharks as their brand ‘Suns’ wasn’t very commercially popular to AFL Audiences and they wanted to move on from the Suns after the lack of Support from the Fans so they decided to sign with Southport Sharks to 90% own the Suns and the AFL Owns 10% of the Club and is now it’s one independent AFL team. I’m Predicting the Suns to be a Finals contender a lot more with new Star players, Better support, more money, much more success and expect to be a Finals succeeder.
2025 #2-GWS Giants rename themselves to the Western Sydney Giants after they finally get Independence from Bieng fully owned from the AFL and will get a lot bigger support from fans and grow a big fanbase and the GWS-Canberra alignment ends as they ACT Get their own team but the Giants still own all of Western Sydney and most of Western New South Wales.
2026-North Melbourne Kangaroos Decide it is time to leave Melbourne to move to either 4 Cities: Cairns/Townsville, 2nd Tasmanian Team, New Zealand and Sydney. North Melbourne Kangaroos remove North Melbourne from their name to just ‘The Kangaroos’ until they settle on the cities they chose to move to. They finally decide to move to Sydney and chose to make a fanbase in North Sydney to also keep the North Name in. They will play at the new Upgraded North Sydney Oval which will be a 20,000 seater stadium. North add Orange to their Kits to fit in with the Weather of Sydney More and have a Beachy Coast feel to it. They will still play 3 games at Marvel Stadium a year so North Supporters in Melbourne can still go to a game.
2028-Each Victorian AFL Team return to there the Suburban Grounds: Richmond Tigers Finally Play at the Redeveloped Upgraded Punt Road Oval or ‘Tigerland Stadium’ which will be Richmond Tigers main home ground but still playing at the MCG and Marvel. Melbourne Demons Remain at the MCG as there historic home ground but they also start to play home games at Marvel Stadium to better connect with the City of Melbourne. Collingwood Magpies return to Victoria Park by demolishing the Remaining stands and adding new bigger ones.
Nah..
There is an act team gws if u look at the back of there jersey it says Canberra
they are not based in Canberra though, they are only contracted to play about 4 home games a year there
The Giants aren’t an act team just like hawthorn and north aren’t tassie teams
7 Years for University there fella.
I think ultimately 20-22 teams would be cap for the AFL, add a third WA and a Canberra team, the Tasmania team and then either Darwin or try and expand into New Zealand
Yeah I think this is where it’s headed, by that stage you’d have to have something like a conference system though
No chance in NZ. Would love to see an NT team one day
Hawthorn are home based in Tasmania
Hawthorn are a Victorian team who play some games in Tasmania, Tassie deserves it’s own team who play 11 games down there
Perhaps the AFL will deviled into two Divisions like the VFA did once
I think Richmond was once called the Gorillas at one point
That was the Fitzroy Gorillas. Lasted into the fifties.
PAFC EST 1870
How many grand finals have west coast won? 3 did you say? Try 4 champ
They should make a not team called the net thuder
They made a mistake. A Melbourne team should have formed with Goldcoast and western Sydney. They were struggling from the 1980s and are still struggling now. North Melbourne, Bulldogs, st Kilda.
I’m at brisbane first goal game
Wow that’s pretty cool
Thanks mate and who do you support
Footscray was there before Richmond!!
where before Richmond? your not clear
Not in the VFL
@ Kim James Yes Footscray is a older club than Richmond but that is not what they are talking about they talking about what club join the VFL Richmond left the VFA in 1907 and join the VFL playing their first season in 1908 Footscray didn't leave the VFA until 1924 and play their first season in the VFL in 1925.
1:05
And 5yrs later Hawthorne is gonna go Tasmania
Mate if you’re going to make a video depicting the history of the VFL/AFL you should really have mentioned that some clubs have changed their nickname.
Geelong were know as the Pivotonians until 1923 when after a number of losses a local cartoonist drew a black cat suggesting it was to bring luck to the struggling team and Geelong adopted the new name and has used it ever since.
South Melbourne were actually nicknamed the Southerners but were more widely called the Bloods and formerly changed their name to the Swans in 1934. It’s believed the name Swans was chosen because South Melbourne had a large number of Western Australian players and the WA state emblem was a swan. Also Swans were quite prevalent at Albert Park and Lake which South Melbourne had close ties.
Hawthorn were originally called the Mayblooms. Apparently this was because the Hawthorn bush was also known as the May bush or May tree and it’s flowers were known as Mayblooms. Hawthorn changed their name to the Hawks in 1943.
Essendon were the Same Old's (The same old winning team)
Too many victorian teams, I think to even out the league 3 Victorian teams should relocate to the 3 states/territories that haven’t got a club. Example, north Melbourne relocate to Tasmania, st kilda could go to Canberra etc. doesn’t Necessarily have to be these teams to these states but you get the idea, it’ll not only finally make the sport truly Australian, with a team in every state, but it’ll even it out more with Victoria getting a few less teams
You’re probably right, but I don’t see this being well received
There is not a sufficient population in either Canberra or the NT to support an AFL team. Just look at NT thunder who are leaving the NEAFL. There's nothing wrong with having lots of teams in Victoria since it by far the state with the most supporters and one most populous states in Australia.
I agree that North Melbourne should re-locate to Tasmania. They already play as many as 3 or 4 of their home matches each season at Hobart's Bellerive Oval, they are the sole occupant of that ground, and as a result they have turned it into a fortress and are extremely difficult to beat there. The Kangaroos' supporters can whinge and moan as much as they like about their team re-locating, but they don't get big crowd attendances coming to watch them play at their home matches in Melbourne, even when the team is performing well. Usually when they get a decent crowd it's because the away team's supporters are making up most of the numbers.
100th like
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Your welcome
Be for that it was the vfa
Go Dons
Territory not Terri- toooory
Wasn't there a merger to create the Western Bulldogs?? Surprised you overlooked that........??
No, there wasn't. Footscray and Fitzroy came close to merging in the 80's, but supporters of both clubs raised enough money to stop that. Footscray changed their name between the 96 and 97 seasons to the Western Bulldogs so that they could be representative of the western suburbs as a whole
@@tezzalenko I thought that was footscray merging with somebody!! My mistake!! But still looks like an oversight not mentioning the name change!!
@@scottiethegreat74 not really, because you would need to mention all of the name and nickname changes. Did you know that in 1998, North Melbourne changed their name to the Northern Kangaroos, and changed back again in the early-mid 2000's? Or that a lot of the foundation clubs nicknames were different when they entered the competition? Essendon were the Dons, South Melbourne were the Blood Stained Angels, Fitzroy were the Maroons, Melbourne were the Fuschia's. Hawthorn entered the competition and were called the Mayblooms. It could have been worth mentioning, but it's not really that important in such a short video about the competition
@@tezzalenko All that aside, with this video being on RUclips, and plenty of international interest, people watching this and looking for the teams mentioned are going to be left wondering. All your points are valid, along with many more I'm sure, but to not mention the Commonly used CURRENT name of a team, I still see as an oversight. Yes, you could go a lot deeper into past things, but they are not so relevant today. I would actually love to see a more comprehensive video on the history of teams, but in THIS case, I still think it's an error to not mention something which is relevant now!!
???
This is history according to a victorian....
It’s the history of the AFL/VFL which is one league
The tigers entered 1885
Formed in 1885, joined the VFL in 1908.
Entered the VFA in 1885.
All these early teams came from the VFA except University.
hawthorn are tasmania
No they’re not
My favourite team is West Coast Eagles!!!!
this video is bs the trimeline is so off
