- Basic but important.
there are some deviations to this that the pros might use for 3 part mixes but generally this is the easiest way to mix for the common painter. Scale Model (Hobby)
hopefully this answers the questions a few modelers have messaged me about.
when in doubt - follow manufactures directions to start
and as always,additional info /corrections welcomed. Авто/Мото
Dam Andy X you just Explained the paint cup so well and it was over 8 years ago thank you if you are still Alive Lol;
I second that!!
See I watched a Eastwood video and didn’t understand where they were getting their starting number, but this video made it clear it’s based off the amount you want in the cup and so it’s the number that you pick. Thanks very much
This was so simple, thank you for helping me finally get those silly markings. I was so excited when I got it that I showed it to my husband right away, and was able to easily explain it to him.
This is by far the best ratio video out there I been searching for information on this for 2 weeks and finally found this.. thank you sir!! Best help there is..
The year is 2023 and this video just helped out a millennial mix epoxy - God bless you sir
Thank you best explanation on RUclips straight to the point

I'm from Manila, Phillipines. For me, reading and understanding mixing ratio was very complicated. but after watching your video it became very clear. simple and direct to the point. you did a good job. keep it up sir. thank you so much.
Perfect explanation. Before this explanation it was like snorkeling in the muddy Mississippi, now its the crystal clear Carribean.............thanks for the video well done Andy X

You just made my paint project so much easier!!
Thank you sir
Thank you for taking time out of your day to explain this. Direct and to the point. no hee hawing around.
Could not have been more complicated!! Thanks for the clarification of the rules: (1) match numbers, (2) first pour the paint.
Wow was this very explanatory ! I been painting a little off and on for years, and yet never knew how the paint mix cup worked. YAA for youtube. This explained it very well.
Thank you, I really like your explanation. I have never for once thought in this direction before, I was just sitting down this night and thought about what to do being the type of person that I am, always searching for new things and mixing paint just came to my mind and for the very first time I was able to get something tangible from you. Thanks once again and I will always get in touch if there is or there other things that I will like to know.
Thank you so much for making this so simple to understand, work on all my own stuff, but I was afraid to paint till I watch you’re video , and so I painted my motorcycle, and it cam out awesome, thank you so much you are very much appreciate it.

Thank You Sir for your contribution here. Out of all these tutorials, yours is plain and clear. I will stick with yours.

Couldn't find it anywhere, never saw the Eastwood vid mentioned by others.

Great vid and explanation. Everyone likes to hear themselves talk! Thank you
I've always felt like a dummy when trying to figure out these ratio mixing cups Clearly I'm not a pro and I failed math in highschool. I still feel like a dummy, but one who finally understands it. Almost certain I do ;-) Thanks!
Lars,
You should not feel bad! I have a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and still was not able to figure out the markings on the container without reading the instructions on the Internet! Thanks for your appreciation.
Yeah I'm a painter on a budget cause of my penny pinching customers,I use sandwich bags.I put it into the cup with a rubber band on top and reuse the measuring cup like a hundred times before I get a new one.
That's boss actually
You explained it just great. i was confused as all get out at first but now I understand the mixing cup. Thanks

Hi Andy, Came across your explanation of mixing cup ratios and appreciate your video. Sounds silly not to know how to read a mixing cup like this, but have always scaled out my sealer parts by weight- a 3 to 1 ratio required because... I never really understood the cups! So as little of a deal as you may think- you taught me today how to read the cups! So Thank You! Have a good day fella!
+Colby Clauss thank you Colby

Great video very helpfull. Thanks for taking the time to experiment and to for sharing.
Will this work with 4 to 1 single stage paint with 3 parts so paint then hardner the reducer
I want to thank you, that was a nice simple to understand explanation, I already knew the easy 1 to 1 ratio, but I am getting ready to spray a ceramic undercoating on the bottom of my car and it calls for a 4 to 1 ratio, and I have some PPG measuring cups but I did not understand the measuring numbers, but your instruction is very clear and I now understand, sometimes my dyslexia kicks in and I get thrown off on the measuring I was going to ask my neighbor who knows these things but I was a little embarrassed thanks again, It's to bad not every mix is a 1 to 1 ratio, like they say, "But knowing is half the battle' thanks again. now I don't have to go to Eastwoods site, they probably just would have confused me anyway.
very clear explanation - yuo saved me buddy
Thank you! Your explanation was simple to follow you explained perfectly.
Very well explained, easy to understand as I know what to do to mix it. You should always use the same number when you fill up no matter what the mixing ratio is, but all of them must come with same number to get good mix. For example, your primer is 4:1, look at 4:1 on the cups. Fill up the primer to 2, then fill up the hardener to 2 to make it 4:1. Same with clear coats but the mixing ratio is different 👍
Absolutely wicked awesome guide !!!
Very well explained, thanks at last someone who makes sense
That is a clear coat to my brain.. excellent..
This helped me so much first time auto painter here!
How will I fix the paint that will reflect the clear outcome image after the clear cord
