- Karanak the Hound of Vengeance is the new Free Legendary Hero for Khorne in Total War Warhammer 3 as part of the Skulls for the Skull Throne update, so let's talk about the lore, gameplay mechanics, and special rules that will make this FLC hero a great addition to the Total War Warhammer 3 Immortal Empires campaign.
Karanak FLC Hero - Khorne DLC - Total War Warhammer 3
Fun fact Kerberos mean spotted one in ancient Greek.
So Hades the god of the underworld, one of the 3 most powerful Olympians, named his dog spot.
Some things never change.
Reminds me of Micro from The Punisher lol
I love it but unfortunately for fans of the Dresden Files, I think that was apparently disproven at some point.
@@consolescrub4031 _googling_
You're right. But it's still fun to imagine a 3 headed dalmatian instead of something more traditionally scary like a doberman or traditionally subversive like corgi.
@@ianyoder2537 Oh absolutely, in terms of things I want to be true this is definitely up there. (My sympathy to Hermes though considering he would technically have been the ancient Greek god of mailmen.) I like the Rick Riordan portrayal of Ammit in the Egyptian mythology books as a crocodile headed dog about the size of a Dachshund who devours the hearts of the guilty because that's as big as it needs to be to do it's job. In terms of what I want to believe I think that Cerberus was a big Labrador who just had one dark patch on the centre head because I think that's a funny contrast to the general aesthetic of the Greek Underworld.
Gray wizards, aka followers of Ulgu, specialize in illusions and deceptions to evade and attack their enemies through the fifth lore (the lore of shadows). It's not easy to track one, especially one which does not want to be found. Anyone or anything that can hunt a gray wizard with this much ease is on a completely different level.
Karanak is gonna be a hero killer in campaign. That's for sure.
On the tabletop (at least in 40K 10th ed.), that's essentially what he's known for!
@@darylltkd8961 I had no idea Karanak was also in 40k. That's really cool.
Gelt and Vampire campaigns are going to get a lot more tense when they face Khorne
Put him up against Oxyotl, would be dope to see which hunter comes out on top.
it is stated in the last few lores i read that fleshhounds particularly karnack can track you by the scent of your soul
Cerberus as an inspiration yes, but the Hounds of Tindalos though, that will track you through space and time! These were created by Frank Belknap Long and published in 1929, ad their thing is that when they sniff anyone who does some time travel, they'll relentlessly hunt them and materialize from angles in rooms or streets.
But thanks for covering Karanak's arrival! I didn't even see it coming lol
thank you for the lore! never actually heard of the Hounds of Tindalos before, thats super cool
Lovecraft stuff, Indie. More than you may think in Warhammer is based on the Lovecraftian Mythos, Tzeetch being one of them (Nyarlathotep)
@@milkandcookiesTW it's eldritch horror mythos stuff and it isn't talked about that often.
@@nadaningunos9339Tzeentch is based on Michael Moorcock's work.If you actually read Lovecrafts works, or the add ons from his contemparies, there actually isn't that much overlaps. Besides pretty shallow comparisons.
@@hollow8136 Yeah, GW ripped off Moorcock hard along with Tolkien and Heinlein. Moorcock created the Chaos symbol that GW loves to splash all over everything. They probably haven't even paid him a nickle for it, either. Meanwhile, they sue people that use the term "space marine" even though they stole that from "Starship Troopers". What a bunch of dicks.
Pitbull named princess be like
Does that mean we will get the Chihuahua of Khorne too? Senior Stubby, the Vanquisher. Destroyer of ankles and sofas. Or will this be a Skaven-DLC as well?
I'm not sure Karanak hunts children.
He's got that dawg in him
three of them!
Triple the snoots to boop.
Wait... Mostly red, moves across time and you know when he's coming?
Does this make him the Warhammer Fantasy version of Santa?
Don't forget he brings presents (mostly to Khorne) and he knows if you've been good or not. (He's also Khorne's favourite kid after Skarbrand disappointed him and Valkia is adopted.)
@@consolescrub4031 See!
@@consolescrub4031 Valkia is his "wife"
@@Caliif The official lore probably agrees with you but to me it sort of feels like she's more of a young daughter who tried to get his approval by taking that Slaanesh champion's head to his shrine. She goes along on take your kid to work days and Khaine occasionally points at her to Crone Hellebron and asks why she can't be more like Valkia. She's adopted because she was a mortal though.
@@consolescrub4031 She's literally his wife, objectively speaking
Tzeentch: check out my two headed chicken that can see the past and the future
Khorne: uh huh, *whistles* here boy, sick em
Whats funny about him is he can track through time space and mind.
Time to fire up my 888th Khorne campaign.
All I play is khorne and empire lol
I was started 88 Khorne campaign before and finished just 14 of them
Gotta expand your horizons man there's so many fun races to play @@ekothesilent9456
There’s no way you hate yourself THAT much
Can’t wait to bring him along for a Valkia campaign. Just a girl and her dog.
3 entire snoots to boop, best doggo.
Maybe an aura that increases chance to miscast would fit his ability list
if that brass collar does like 1000 ap damage to miscasts Karanack might be really good in MP
only if has an aura that gives miscast chance to normal cast spells.
I was thinking they could be a Legendary Lord, and the diplomacy screen & quest battle dialogue would have the three heads arguing.
Once again, an excellent narration to get us to our destination.
Khorne's doggo.
What does it say about Karanak when even the grey wizard of all spellcasters is struggling to escape?
Also does Karanak like headpats from Valkia?
It mostly says that grey wizards gotta learn how to throw hands instead of trying to run away like a little bitch. Settra would probably just slap Khorne's mongrel around like an underfed chihuahua.
Valkia ain’t got enough arms to pat the doggo
@@ekothesilent9456 I could see The Changeling giving him headpats as some sort of unknowable plan then.
Was not expecting them to actually add a little flavorful lore video with the intro of this new free hero. And a badass one at that
great, like i needed more reasons to start my 1000th khorne campaign
First two qustions which came into my mind:
1. Will Valkia have access to Karanak?
2. When will he arrive?
No and probably in 2-3 weeks although I don’t know this at all
@haikjeft2767 how do you know? Currently, chaos legendary heroes (Aekold, Blue Scribes, Harry the Hammer) are pretty widely available, I think.
@@haikjeft2767 why wouldn't she?
@@arthanor9631 In my current campaign, Sigvald has all three. If the player is not playing a Chaos Faction, Tzeentch LLs should always get Aekold and the Blue Scribes, in my opinion.
@@KorsAir1987 Sigvald really should be a slaaneshi lord like Azazel, although he might enjoy Aekold's gift of life, growth and vigor!
I agree that the tzeentch heroes should go to tzeentch LLs, or Archaon and Belakor, but not Sigvald or Kholek.
Yay!! Skarbrand would approve
If anyone ever told Grimgor about this, he would probably have gone out of his way to piss off Khorne, just so he could fight the big pupper in his dreams.
Considering when he's asleep or on his way to a fight are probably the only times he isn't fighting, that's like a solid 50% reduction in the time he has to spend not fighting to him. Wonder who wins a tag team cage match with Skarbrand and Karanak vs Skarsnik and Grimgor?
@@consolescrub4031 Tough to say, though I reckon that might go in favour of Khorne. Skarsnik isn't much of a fighter, he mostly relies on Gobbla (who is a lot smaller and weaker than Karanak) and shooting enemies with his prodda (which is absolutely vicious in the lore and TT and could in fact pose somewhat of a threat to a greater daemon). The issue is, I think the prodda is considered a magical attack and would therefore do basically nothing to Karanak and Skarbrand.
Between Grimgor and Skarbrand, the fight would probably be close enough to be decided by whichever gets help from their teammate and I think that lorewise, Skarsnik would probably lose to Karanak unless he got time to prepare and set up traps.
In-game it's harder to say since we don't know Karanaks stats and abilities yet, but I could see this going to the Greenskins, since both Skarsnik and Grimgor are very good duelists with abilities to debuff enemy characters. You could probably afford using Skarsnik to duel Karanak and use bothhis fermented fungi and Grimgor's You're Next in order to keep Skarbrands melee defense down for quite a while, allowing Grimgor to chop him down and have enough health left to help Skarsnik finish off Karanak.
@@darthplagueis13 Good answer. I think in the times in which things were ending which we don't speak about, Skarsnik mentions he killed a Verminlord at one point so he could maybe do something.
I feel like the counterpoint to your argument in the interest of devil's advocate is that Skarsnik has two options. He can either try beat Karanak with Gobbla which seems unlikely. Or he can try survive Skarbrand until Grimgor deals with Karanak and comes help.
I don't like his chances with this in game since Karanak can likely run circles around Grimgor but I feel like in lore at least he stands a decent chance of keeping Skarbrand's attention and not immediately getting flattened given he's the smartest of the four fighters and I like Grimgor's chances at giving Karanak three haircuts in the 1v1. They're in trouble if he tries to distract Skarbrand with magic though given he's not hiding from Karanak.
@@consolescrub4031 Well, that was kind of the thing I was referencing: I'm pretty sure Skarsnik would have killed the Vermin Lord with a good shot from his Prodder since well, other than that he's literally just a Goblin with a big Squig on his side, and he's not even a particularily big Goblin.
Not sure if Karanak could punish the prodder since it's a bound spell and Skarsnik himself isn't tapping into the winds of magic, but I'm pretty sure it's still considered the kind of magic that Khornite units and especially Karanak would be highly resistent to.
Not to mention that canonically, the Prodder is empowered by the presence of other Greenskins nearby and I reckon if Skarsnik wants it to actually zap a significationly powerful daemon, he'll need at least a few dozend around to get some serious bang for his buck, which he isn't gonna get in a cage match.
Personally, I don't think Skarsnik is lasting long in the presence of Skarbrand which is the main issue for this strategy. Grimgor could certainly overpower Karanak, but whether he could kill the doggo faster than than Skarbrand could crush a crafty little Goblin is questionable. Sure, Skarsnik might be able to run away, but Skarbrand might just get bored and go after Grimgor if he does that and I'm not sure if the tricks Skarsnik might otherwise have up his sleeves in order to distract an opponent would really work on a daemon.
Yeah fair, I doubt the prodder would work but if memory serves, Skarbrand was banished once, after being summoned by Thanquol, by having a statue dropped on him and I could see Skarsnik maybe getting him to cause a cave in or something on himself. I think if Karanak is trying to hunt Grimgor, Skarsnik could buy a bit of time. Skarbrand is neither subtle nor particularly tactical so I feel he could probably be goaded into attacking various things if Skarsnik is particularly cunning although I wouldn't expect anything would stop him for long. I don't know if you could be able to trick him into attacking his own reflection or something like that but you could probably get him to tear through some supporting structures in the hypothetical scenario of a fight underground or with cliffsides. That was me trying to argue devil's advocate though. I think in all likelihood Skarsnik gets turned into a chew toy or flattened beer can, Karanak loses at least one head and Grimgor goes down in an incredible fight.
The downside of steam workshop, this flc feels like a Christmas when you have already unwrapped the present.
Don't think I've been this early to an upload before.
hmm so you would need a space weapon, a time weapon that would take care of two of the three heads
Norsca and Coast need some love REAL bad
Coast need to just be removed from the game lol.

Ogres and tomb kings as well
@@sawyeratkinson tomb kings definitely need some love
And tomb kings 🙏
Love the addition, but did they really have to reverse the heads? Should have been 1 head at the top, 2 down lower. It just looks goofy like this.
Really cool small trailer, overall cool model but two things: 1. why does he has one lower and two higher heads - how can he bite effectively like that when not all are the same hight? (or do I read the proportions wrong?) 2. why does he has those things on his head when his lower /middle head looks SO fucking perfect. (yes i really like the Cerberus vibe and the middle head very much - just thought some could explain me these things) otherwise I love the „haunted“ vibe and the t-Rex footstep sound. Sounds like he is a big boy :)
The two heads on top hold the arms and the bottom head eats them from their balls
@@Jobuddy69 now thats a fucking scary thought but crazy cool idea for a combat finisher
Gonna bet he's gonna have some scaling passive that gives him...idk maybe mass and speed or regen whenever someone uses a spell or ability around him.
a khorne vs vampire counts dlc would be dope. arbal vs abhorash maybe? blood vs blood?
There's just no way Skarbrand is left by himself in the Khorne faction as the only LL
We love to see it
“See we put his third head on the bottom instead of the top so it’s commercially and legally distinct. GET READY TO BUY MORE MODELS IN OLD WORLD”
when arbaal also comes around i am gonna make the dogstack
The good boy has arrived
I'm glad we got the Pup already! I just hope they don't downgrade Skulltaker as the LH for the DLC and call it a day for Khorne
Scyla is prime LH material
Its not Khorne its not a Dog. Its a KHORNEDOG
Remember Karanak prefers to rubbed on his belly from the inside, and he doesn't bite the hand the feeds him he takes arm and the elbow as well
I really Hope Karanak buffs not just Flesh Hounds, but normal Hounds of Khorne as well.
Inverse Rule of Doggo Naming tells me this big guy is nothing but bundles of love and affection.
Maybe if his name was Princess I'd be worried but as is I'm pretty sure I could take him...
...in as a pet, obviously.
It would be cool if he had either a teleport ability or a net ability that only targets wizards to better hunt backline spellcasters specifically
Love how the hound looks in that trailer! Hard to imagine that there would be no Khorne DLC, those should be some easy sales.
“A pit bull of hell” is a bit redundant
Carl franz duels it murders it because he’s the OG
Cant even kill Karanak fully either he will reform and begin the hunt again if you are strong enough to actually succeed at defeating him once. So Karanak will eventually run down his prey one way or another.
Only issue I have with this is I cant see Khorne sending his Favored pet to assist Skarbrand being Exiled and what not. If there is any actually incidents involving the two I have no clue.
Tariff portrayed Karanak as being like a Pitbull with the name "Princesses". I wonder if Karanak does mean "Princesses" in the Dark Tongue.
I hope karanak is very skilled on the campaign map too for assassinations.

The grey order ain't gettin out the colleges with this one
Hopefully can get him as WOC because scar brand doesn’t interest me.
I just want to experience a version of Arbaal the undefeated that actually has a chance in melee against a state trooper.. 4/5'th edition versions of him was absolutely laughable in TT..
I thought Karanak would be a Free legendary lord for Khorne. imagine that a Giant dog as a lord.
Ee's a good wee boy!!! Pat his head, and then the other head and the third one. Give em each a wee rawhide bone. Good pups
3:28 someone actually mentioned Valten for a change woot
They would be insane to end support for this game so much more they can do…idk why don’t they just do a drive rework and go back to head vs head with legendary lord FLC and some legendary hero’s like warhammer 2…like go with what works!
If they followed the path of the old roadmap, which suggested we would eventually get a proper Khorne DLC, and they made it as good as Thrones of Decay? I would pay CA big bucks to get my hands on that.
The bestest of the best puppys joins the fray, let the blood flow
I could swear Karnak had a beard... Right? A frilly beard. Looks kinda like a fish. Am I getting crazy?
So... Luthor Harkon is immune to Karanak's third head...
We need a Lord now!

To the surprise of no one, but I am so happy! One of my top three characters I have wanted in.
He would be collers as a hero in my opinion
This is a great character! But I think that the Mechanicus 2 announcement stole the show for me.
Definitely think this means that khorne will probably only get 1 dlc (especially because there’s not much left he can even get) and the n any units left out of that will come in the end times thing. Hope we get kabandha though in some form
Is that grey wizard a named character?
That is certainly a bad boy.
I've noticed that CA have used his older model as the basis for Karanak's design, rather than the more recent one. I wonder what the creative decision behind that was?
They're virutally the same thing just like Belakor's old and new model.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS I FCKING LOVE KARANAK!!
I hope he gets bonus vs large and AP, maybe an aura of increased miscast chance (passive) and bonus dmg vs wizards.
Oh and also, CA, please buff Bloodcrushers and Skullcrushers. They get rekt by units that should not rek them :((
I don't actually know if he will get that much AP, most casters aren't that heavily armoured, after all.
@@darthplagueis13 that's true, but a decent amount of AP is necessary to make him viable, I think!

I wonder what he will do if caster is flying? We can say that the grey wizard in trailer was under level 16, otherwise he wouldn't have had any difficulty escaping the doggo.
Growl angrily and wait for the wizard to come down, presumably.
naah he high jumps and ignores physics
Can't fly forever...
Nice! Only two LL's left to check off my most wanted. That leaves just Scylla and Arbaal, and I'll be content!
