the economy of this game needs some "rebalancing" I think, as right now you can get rich very quickly and buy everything you encounter (heavy mech for a mere 4.5M CB?? whilst literally selling just a foot of a cicada for 2M CB??). Maybe a difficulty slider would fix this?
I'm not bashing the game, I really enjoy my stompy ro.. MECHS, I just want to see it a lot more polished than it is now.

another proper review, so many of the reviews just focus on the 'BAD' AI, though as you pointed out, its hard to make a perfect AI for a game like this.

I've never spent over $60 US for a title. And the VAST majority of titles I buy for far, far less due to discounts on STEAM.
I spend significantly more if I go out these days ($100+ at least for a night out) for comparison.

Better than I expected but could have had a more interesting campaign. The best thing about the game is the freedom to manage your Mercenaries on such a huge map, total sandbox :) Combat is solid, heat management is just like Mechwarrior online and the coop function will be great.

Worth A Buy Love the review but you can’t get mad at other reviewers for slapping a time spent on their campaign. Some folks, as much as they shouldn’t, want to know how long a campaign in a prospective game lasts, and it’s only fair that they know that it takes X hours to speed through the campaign and hit the end credits...even if that’s not the way this game should be played.
Perhaps those other reviewers should’ve also explicitly stated that the game heavily favors venturing out of the critical path.
You didn't really mention if this was a single player game or not. If I'm only into single player aspects is this OK to get?

I have nothing personal against epic as I gave it a try in the beginning but since that has happened I’ve chosen security if data over a little enjoyment from a game

CO-OP review - a friend and I have played 3/4 of the campaign on Co-op, and weeelllllll, the co-op needs some help. It IS fun, and if one of you doesn't care about setting up mechs, picking missions, divvying up scrap, and basically ANYTHING AT ALL except for piloting one mech in missions, then it's all good. Unfortunately, i like all of that stuff, and being the 2nd player means i dont get to do shit in between missions, hell you cant even see the fucking screens while your partner sets everything up. If you want a mech built a certain way, you have to explain in voice chat how you want your mech built, and hope he understands you, and gets it right. You cant see the market, so no cool surprise finds for you, gotta hope your buddy notices that mech youve been hoping for, and tells you, and buys it for you, and sets it up for you.....You have no opportunity to build, and lean back and kinda evaluate your mech, and maybe make changes ..no you just sit there and wait. You literally RP an NPC pilot. On top of that, you have to use HIS pilots, and be one of them. Well, in this game, guess what....the NPC pilots that you can hire suck. So, while your friend gets to play a pilot with 10/10 in every single pilot stat (things like specific dmg type boosts, extra defense etc etc), you at best get a guy who caps out of 8 in some stats, and 5-6 in the others, which means you will ALWAYS be shit compared to your friend. He will always have better stats, and do more dmg, take less dmg, and cool heat better than you. Period. So, while the co-op can be a fun time, it isn't even half of the actual game. On top of all that, since we are in his game, my game doesnt progress, so when i play solo, i am back in the fucking centurion, and not my Victor or Atlas that i have been using(and loving). Im not sure why they went this route with the co-op ..a simple system where i could bring my own mech with me from my campaign, and have control over it in between missions, and i got a part of the rewards as my pay would have made the whole thing a lot better.
That sounds pretty terrible actually. I probably won't even touch the coop until that gets changed, if it ever does.

Asking for proper co-op on the forums die hard fans told me to shut up and it was perfect the way it is...

Most of the things you mentioned should be in there but I dont think a Borderlands co-op style would work with this game. It barely works in Borderlands. I can get to like level 50 in an hour or two doing nothing apart from following high-level friends around. Maybe that's what they were trying to avoid.

Honestly here's a few mods the game needs:
1. An AI overhaul mod
2. An alternate start mod that makes the beginning of the game more like HBS' Battletech
3. A radar overhaul mod
A mod that makes it into a mechwarrior game would be awesome. They raped this franchise and left it's bunghole bleeding. Waited so long for a lie. maybe the modders will make it the game it deserves to be.
this game borroed very many things from HBS battletech.the whole process of configuring mechs and the repair system + hud of it is completely taken over from HBS battletech.The sequence when you use your jump ship also.The whole tutorial plot very much HBS battletech.I guess the 2 developers helping each other out in many ways

Once the dumdums over at Epic let fly the "Workshop", I have a feeling some modders will come to our rescue and fix the game to be precisely what it needs to be.
the game needs a mod for "Not make the game completely shit" because 90% of the missions are garbage.
Mod so it does not turn the upper half when you turn the lower half, ie stays on mouse point when changing direction.
Mod so you don't have to climb those stairs after every mission.

My main gripe is that when you are on a defend contract and the lady in the dropship tells you she sees enemies approaching, she does not tell you which general direction. It normally takes a while to get on the other side of the place you are defending unless you want to defeat the point and just stomp straight through it. Little details like that break immersion and seem a bit lazy or rushed.

Warning: ai needs a ton of work. Especially your teammates AI. They just run in and brawl, even if you build a long range missile mech, they just run to min shot distance and get shot to bits.
Moreover this game features endless enemy spawns, so a lot of times you should do your obj and get out, because they just keep coming and a lot of times spawn literally infront of you.
There are a lot of more bugs (mechwarrior 5 subreddit)
This game is quite rushed and needs at least 2 months of polish.

You have to command them, so if you run an LRM mech and don't tell them to stay back they will run in and use their other weapons, I tell my LRM mechs to wait just outside the objective and they pummel their targets with LRM's

The AI is shit ... Your AI buddies stomp around the city and destroy it when they are supposed to defend it and they stand still and letting themselves be shot, or walk into gas pipes and get blown up.

I first started watching Mack for his MechWarrior Online videos. I especially remember Gankenstein and the Jaegermech with AC2s. That was hilarious. Nice to see it Mack come full circle to MechWarrior 5.

Theres no tactics.. theres no strategy... theres just whackamole with ever increasing numbers of enemies the longer you play. Cause the devs only way to increase difficulty aparantly is "throw more shit at the player"
Its clear that there was no balance testing for the later stages of the game
Indeed, single-player with a huge ass map. The funny thing is all they want you to do is:
Go here, kill this, destroy that, protect this for x amount of time, return back.
Now imagine like 1000 galaxies or stars or whatever they are called, and imagine around 600 of these quests requesting you to do the same over and over and over and over and over again, with the campaign missions not being any different whatsoever.
The game is kinda fun, but it gets old and FAST.
The levels aren’t that open. They’re basically small squares.

The AI is atrocious, the enemies spawn in directly behind you in some cases.. even right infront of you just pop into existance, the game reeks of cut corners. Ai will run right through buildings and destroy them even thought they are suposed to protect them. The AI will also run straight into close combat no matter if its equipped for it or not. MEaning if you have a mech with mainly long range missiles that cant be fired under a certain distance the mech will run up to the enemy.. and just stand there.. menacingly! (And the enemy will have a field day with them)
Then theres the fact that you cant even change the logo of your mercenary unit (or have any kind of character customisation.. cant even rename pilots!) despite it being a huge plotpoint that you had to create a new name for yourselfe cause youre kinda sorta being hunted in the beginning... also if other mercenary dropships drop of enemy AI on the battlefield (meaning the opfor doesnt belong to one of the political factions) those dropships have your emblem on them!
The campaign missions are badly designed.. there are no pre mission briefiengs for campaign missions despite the fact that they are suposedly handcrafted (makes sense that theres no briefing for random gen missions but campaign missions? Come on people!) Mechwarrior 2 mercenaries had those for petes sake!
Other things:
Walking around your dropship is underutilized... theres no interaction at all. Yes its cool to see your mechs in the hangar being worked on but really.. after the first couple of times that really loses its shine. There is no smalltalk with the only two npcs that sometimes talk to you either. You cant engage with them outside of scripted story stuff where they will talk your ear off... and to top it off you can just walk away from them while they talk and they will just keep talking to the thin air!
The spawn system is atrocious.. first of all its endless... even in missions where the mission type is not "warzone" (a wave based mission.. defeat a minimum of enemies to fullfill your contractual obligation, destroy more endlessly respawning enemies to get bonus cash.. good for salvage and earning lots of money!) wich really gets absurd sometimes when you need to take out a base but the game spawns 40+ tanks right behind you out of thin air from a direction where there where no enemies before! Sometimes you get spawncamped too and get shot at before you even get control of your mech starting a mission with your mech allready damaged!
There are so many many things in this game that scream "the developer was lazy!" and considering the developer and his *ahem* less then stellar past.. no i will not give them the benefit of the doubt. PGI is notorious for this shit
Mechwarrior 3 and 4 had better enemy placement then this game.. heck mechwarrior 2 mercenaries had better enemy placement and they had random mission generation too!
What else?
There is no heat vision nor passive/active radar... the radar btw is completly useless and the UI looks horrible compared to what they have in MWO or heck.. even in the promo material from earlier this year.
The silver lining on the horizon is that they promised that the game would be completly open to modding thanks to the unreal engine editor... but ill believe that once they actually give these tools to people.. cause this is pgi...

What a surprise Mack's bias tainting yet another review. Notice how he quickly skips over how bad the A.I is, yet any other game he would be slamming it.
Played MWO for many years since first day closed beta and liked it very much. Stop playing due to wait times of 15-30 minutes to get into a game and then just gave up. I haven't bought MW5 because of PGI's history and will let time pass to see if it improves. Just to hear Mack say anything nice at all means there is hope.

But lo and behold the developer managed somehow to make what else could be a great game into a shitfest...
One thing that i didnt gave enough attention in my initial reply is the complete lack of immersion:
There is no news feed to read lore tidbits of as time progresses.. theres only 2 people on the entire dropship that ever talk to you, and only for "story events" wich usually trigger after your rep leveled up. There are guards armed with assault rifles on your dropship (wtf? Why are they there?) but they are dead silent props
You had more interaction in the turn based game with your crew....
The map of the inner sphere does change as time progresses (factions gain and loose territory according to the lore) but it happens automatically wihout any player input or any fanfare...
Mind you they had news feeds in mechwarrior 2 with events like a shortage of LRM ammo.. or introduction of new tech like XL engines being a huge friggin deal that helped flesh out the universe some... btw this lostech? You can get that stuff as early as 3015... i found gauss rifles wich where extinct during that time if youre lucky.. or mechs with double heatsinks.. and AMS systems that hadnt even been invented at that point...
Finally the game has been released from the Epic dungeon and is available on Steam. Will try it out. Great review!
oddly enough i've never seen your channel before, but it was recommended by the algorithm. i have to say, this is the single best review of the game i've seen yet. it seams very honest, fair, and knowledgeable. i think if others were giving the game this much time to the game. more people would be buying it. thanks for making this video.

These games are for a specific genre of player. He generally plays a curtain style of game that the main stream won’t touch. If you are a cod nerd or a The Sims fan…. You may probably won’t like this game. A game is not for every type of gamer. I can appreciate curtain things in a game. I can ignore some flaws because the game may really fulfill a curtain niche I’ve been wanting to play. There is probably curtain bench marks or standards that he looks for … to make sure that the game has… otherwise he probably stress more on the issues/problems.
I’ve never played this game before and I have never played a game like it.
I know these are old comments, and I know you may or may not share the same opinion now, but what game would you compare it to if you are noticing these flaws you stated.
@@LCInfantry My opinion has pretty much stayed the same: The game is underperforming because content is half heartedly made, and it had the potential to be so much more.
Just look at the earlier mechwarrior games to see some good mission design. If they had missions of that calibre in addition to the proc gen then we would have had a decent game. But to this day story missions are nothing but slogfests, missions generated by their proc gen system and given additional voicelines or corridor levels with designated battle arenas you see comming a mile along. Not to mention the only way PGI seems to be capable of ramping up the difficulty is throwing entire Battalions worth of enemies at you in waves. And that is just mission design alone.. dont even get me started at the half assed presentation of the game, the god awfull voice acting, the severe lack of feedback from the campaign map etc.
Mind you three years ago the situation was even worse then it is today after several (way overpriced for what they delivered) DLCs and the game is still only really enjoyable if you heavily mod it.
It also doesnt change the fact that the review glossed over MASSIVE issues the game had 3 years ago, including braindead and barely functioning lancemate AI, endlessly spawning enemies, game mechanics that where introduced in the tutorial... where they stayed for the rest of the game and where never picked up in other missions again and uninspired lame proc gen missions to pad out the story...
Bring back the mackscorner videos.

I played Mechwarrior 2 back in the mid 90's and I can actually say that for once that the modern version Mechwarrior 5 is better in almost every way. This is a rare case in this modern era where the Dev's actually took a concept and built upon it instead of throwing everything it was originally away and shitting all over it with microtransactions. This was a passion project, not some big block buster made for investors and it shows.
It was indeed a passion project, they know what the fans want that is for sure. But I can't get over the terrible voiceovers and several other aspects of the game that make it feel like amater hour.
It is obvious that PGI just doesn't have the talent or the budget to make this a proper AAA game (and to be fair they are hardly a studio like that, they're really small). Just look how much effort was put into MW3 and MW4 campaigns, they feel very serious and very real but that was what could be done with Microsoft budget, while MW5 certainly goes for the right notes, you can't deny that it feels very much like a cheap indie game.
Besides the bad voiceovers there is an apparent lack of talent and maybe some artistic vision and creativity (for 2019 standards) to make elements of the game like UI, characters and environments a bit more beautiful or inspired is most certainly very lacking which is a real shame, because the concept is good.
@@neocodexx I am looking forward to this game growing with time. For sure there are bugs, which I have personally run into like tanks spawning under ground and having to reload the mission because no further waves will spawn until the tank is dealt with, but the core of a good game is there. The environments do get repetative at this point and I do wish that they expand those in the near future, but the bug fixes should be priority.
Other mild annoyances is the rag doll physics on slain mechs and the outright annoying landscape of some terrains. there has been a few times that I have had to take my lance all the way around the map to get to an objective on the other side of an impassable rock wall.
@@joeldoxtator9804 Ragdoll physics need slowing down and being reduced for Mechs and Tanks. These things are at minimum 25 tons usually. They shouldn't be capable of flying from being kicked.
Joel Doxtator holy heck MW2.....man that was epic, even MW1 that still looks amazing, even the gameplay is rock solid......and the music, the atmosphere is just absolutely flawless.

The pop in spawns of enemies that teleport AC20 Armed hunchbacks right infront or behind you turning this game from a tactical vehicular combat sim into a glorified version of whackamole wheret he moles fire back? The lazy ass delivery of everything that is not mission gameplay? Cant even change your friggin mercenary logo or change pilot names? The hamfisted story that got written 6 months before release? The gameplay features in the tutorial missions that got completly abandoned for the rest of the game? The fact that from your entire crew you only ever interact with 2 npcs and only when the script calls for it? The horrible salvage system that is made to frustrate the player dangling mechs precisely 1 salvage point away from you every god damn time? Or how the developer deciding that "increase in difficulty" means just dropping more enemies ontop of the player? Or the braindead AI that can only brawl? The lack of vision modes or active/passive radar? The complete lack of any fluff about what is going on in the inner sphere as you progress through the years?
Cause you know... ALL OF THESE (kept for the emblem, mw2 didnt have those) where better in mechwarrior 2 mercenaries. The only thing lacking in mw2 by modern standards are the graphics... thats the only point where mechwarrior 5 is better.
So yeah.. wheres that passion you spoke about that the dev aparantly put into the game? Because all i see is another "minimal viable" product shoved out the door without much confidence.. hoping that the batteltech IP will save their bacon cause russ knows theres a game starved audience out there...
Theres alot of words i could use to describe the motivations of the developer to make this game... "passion" is absolutely not among them
If you want to see a project with real passion behind it go look up monster hunter world... now thats what i call passion for a game with how much content and love to details and fun gameplay is crammed into there.
Hey Mack! Since the Heroes of the Inner Sphere DLC dropped a couple weeks ago, and the base game got some pretty good tweaks, it'd be nice to see your thoughts on the enhancements that Piranha have made to the game, the new career mode, etc. If you'd be willing to give it another look that is. Have a good one!
pretty surprised this got such a positive review given that some of the complaints he mentioned (graphics, spawning enemies) seem to be a much bigger deal to other reviewers. I'm early on in the game and I have to say I was super underwhelmed by the graphics, to the point that I thought the game was glitching.
Wish the cockpit had a little more going on and they maybe integrated some of the hud into the dash. Otherwise looks solid.
Same, I love it when the hud of a vehicle is integrated in the cockpit.

5:37 heat from da cops
Near end of Quest , Killed Kane who killed my father. In mid battle all
the F key lance commands stopped functioning. After mission I am unable
to do any repairs. No Markets have anything in it. No Pilots for Hire .
and the only thing I can do is paint my busted mechs. Can't fix anything .
Game Busted after killing Kane. PS: No Mods...

I'm enjoying it but in many ways it's kind of barebones, the lore and story leaves something to be desired, even when you compare the game to its ancestors. Also my mockney mechanic is hilarious.

I love these games when done well. I brought the first one when it was released, think it came in a massive yellowish box and played it to death. Weird thing is, the graphics on Mech 5 is how I remember Mech 1 looking.

You are 100% on the mark, the majority of reviews i have read/seen on this game have either just rushed through the campaign, have no idea whats important in a mechwarrior game or were just incompetent and blamed the game for it.

For all Mechwarrior Fans -> its a ok game, much things we wanted, many things missing, but solid foundation for Modders to go nuts once the Modkit launches, wait a Year, then look for Rougetech Like Mod.

I actually discovered the enemies spawning in are based on the direction you're looking LOL. ABSOLUTELY terrible game design. They're trying so hard to cover up the fact that they're just spawning them in nearby.
I cannot remember which Mech Warrior game it was but it was the first game I played on PC when I was a wee lad. I haven't played it since then, I think the OS at the time as 98. I think I might buy this one now Mac. thanks for the review.
Man I love your channel, MechWarrior 2 was one of my first games on PC, I did not got MechWarrior 5 because I hate epic and did not want to get it there. Now I got it and DLC but you were judge on it great videos and love your work on them.

Mech Warrior 2 on PS2 was my first ever shooter game. Maybe I should give this a try..

That's alright, you'll be able to get it and all it's expansions for like 15 bucks in a Steam sale, plus there should be plenty of mods out by then. It's not like there aren't literally 10s of thousands of other decent games you can play on Steam until then, unlike that other store...
Still think MechCommander is the best BattleTech game out there.
Ehhhh its a good one, I think the original 1989 Battletech was better though just because it was an RPG and had a hell lot of Lore built into it. I highly recommend checking it out. Also just so everyone is aware Mech Commander 1 and 2 are Free Online.
This is a lorra, lorra fun! Ain't it crazy though that the poxy little tank missions in the beginning are the hardest? Fighting other mechs no problem... Land on a map with little tanks? I'm all over the place! And yeah, I do feel like I'm in control of a small mercenary group. Main plot? You mean it's got one? That's nice for it... I've played about 10 hrs? But so far so good!
This is the first game I've ever pre-ordered, and I wasn't disappointed. I've been having a tons (see what I did there?) of fun with it. Playing MWO definitely helped control wise, and I'm glad they kept a lot of the control schemes the same.

@@SkelNeldory No its not, campaign time means the amount of time you need to complete the game when you just focus on the main story and nothing else, wich is a measure that can be universally applied. How much additional time anyone spends on a game is their own business. Just because you spend 50 hours diddling around ingame doesnt mean the next guy spend the same amount. Not to mention that most of those 50 hours will not be spend on the actual campaign itselfe but procedural created content.
