She had her mind made up before she even got out of the car. She put it together fast that this new kid at school (the only black kid) had a very kind heart but likely a turbulent and sad home life. She doesn't grill him about his home life before insisting on helping him. That is wonderful.

I actually agree. Yes this film could maybe come off a bit pretentious but ultimately I love it and it's very heartwarming. Leigh Anne felt this was her maternal duty to help this boy (and yes despite his size and rough life he was still a boy). I think it's sad anyone had to even suggest they were grooming him to play football for Ole Miss or whatever. (I'm not a big sports nut, I'm a casual fan).

This film absolutely is sodden with the vestiges of colonial racism, but I do believe it’s driving theme is ultimately anti racist, my grandmother who I always considered very racist (and I’m very left leaning, so I’ve always tended to be sensitive towards this kind of stuff, especially because my wealthy extended family l friends with the Bushes, as in they ate dinner with them and golfed multiple times a year during that occupation. The fact my grandmother considered this her favorite film, I’ve always considered that gobsmacked odd, maybe because this film is essentially positing that individual/ heartwarming anecdotes
