Amid Dispute Over Being 'Blindsided', Michael Oher Tells His True Story from Orphan to Overcomer

  • Former NFL star Michael Oher is making headlines this week with a lawsuit filed against the Tuohy family. He and the family were the subjects of the hit film "The Blind Side", but Oher is now speaking out against both on the heels of the release of his new book where he's sharing lessons learned from a lifetime of adversity.
Oher is known for being an overcomer. He beat the odds, rising from homelessness to achieve eight seasons in the NFL as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, the Tennessee Titans, and the Carolina Panthers until an injury sidelined his football career in 2016. With a father lost to prison, and a mother lost to drugs, Oher's orphan story is one many think they know.
"When I started this journey a long time ago, I was just chasing to be comfortable after I was done with football. My back was against the wall all my life. From the time I was three years old, my first memory was being homeless. Three to ten, I was in and out of foster care, shelters, on the streets," he told CBN News.

I am a little bit confused by who exactly wrote the book and if MIchael was consulted. I think it is wrong to write a book about someone else's personal life. I saw a similar situation where a family wrote a book (which was subsequently also made into a movie) about their son who had died from cancer. Much of the book covered the personal relationship between him and his girlfriend/wife. When I saw an interview with his widowed wife (he died shortly after they were married) I was stunned when she said she did not know anything about the book/movie. She had not been consulted at all. The movie seemed to indicate that she became a nurse to dedicate her life to helping others because of this experience and that he was her one true love. In reality, she was now happily married and had two kids. She actually seemed a little embarrassed to be blind sided (no pun intended) Clearly the parents of this young man had a very different perspective than the woman who was described in the movie. I wonder if there is a similar dynamic here.

He believed he was adopted by the Tuoys. Even though adult adoption was available, the Tuoys told him that a conservatorship was the legal term for adoption, and the only option available to satisfy the NCAA's concerns (apparently well-founded) about this Ole Miss Booster family's arrangements with the sought after recruit that would allow him to attend there. He had scholarship offers from much more prominent football programs, such as Alabama, but was funneled by the Tuoys to their alma mater, as part of a "family" tradition. Sadly, he only thought he was family.
Am adoption would have given him a claim to inherit a portion of the Tuoys'fortune. Instead, they tricked him into a conservatorship that gave them rights to HIS finances.
In the book and movie deals, the Tuoys included their biological children, but excluded Micheal. Further, LeeAnn has made "adopter of Big Black Athlete" her entire identity, and the basis of her books and speaking engagements. She's been dining off that lie for years.

If your going to do a good deed, then do a good deed, don’t do a good deed in order to steal someone’s likeness and to enrich yourself. They made him into an indentured servant. Slavery ended eons ago and it should have been left that way!

By the time the Tuohy's got involved with Oher he was already the number 5 prospect in the USA being courted by colleges offering him full scholarships and willing to do whatever it took to get him admitted to their schools, including tutoring to raise his GPA. He didn't need the Tuohy's to play college football and go to the NFL.

@@miked853 i just heard a report of a young local, who is so disconnected with family and CRAVES a slice of normalcy, he is staying at his friends' mom's house because it is a safer place to be, where love is demonstated and felt. i worked in voc rehab for 27-years...kids are being conceived as an 'income source' my dear friend. so please understand that culturally...some peeps be EPIC failing....

I believe Michael, it’s very easy to ignore what you’re signing when you believe that somebody loves you. And that they want you to be part of their family, I’ve been gone that way so many times, but not for money.😢

So sad. BLM got to him and now he is hurting the family who loved and took care of him. His adult trauma is about the lies he now believes from the BLM movement. I can’t believe he’s taking the family that took him in to court. He should be ashamed of himself, honestly. He’s telling a whole different story than he told before. It’s just sad.

It is almost imposible to get yourself out from the bottom, unless you have help from someone or a charitable institution or group. Yes you have a desire to forge your life ahead, but coming from where you were, the odds were against you. I know, I was there, and I would have never made it without the kindness of some people. I always pray for those who helped me to get where, I am now. I am not rich but my life is a lot better now than before. Mr. Oher you should be thankful for the opportunity that the Tuohy family gave you. God bless.

I don’t agree at all that he was portrayed as illiterate in the movie. He had just never had anyone care enough to see that he learned anything. I think this is simply a story of an unappreciative person who feels the need to not only make a name for himself but to gain monetarily. Very sad
