RIP Layne...One of the greatest voices of all-time
Facts
Big facts!!
Major facts
Super duper facts
Id say best of all time
Layne Staley had the best voice in Grunge
I would have to debate that …
Try Chris Cornell
Not only did he sing as good or better than Layne, Cornell was a lyrical genius.
And.. I’m sorry to go here… I love me some Layne Staley and AIC .. but Cornell wasn’t all trashed out on heroin like many of his counterparts.
RIP Layne
RIP Chris
Just my opinion
Chris Cornell had the best vocal range and style , anyway Layne was amazing ❤️
@Stopcens Oringus
What’s hilarious is you think Layne Staley wrote any of AIC’s music..
98% of the lyrics for AIC were written by Jerry Cantrell.
Might wanna come to a debate with a brain there buddy.
@Stopcens Oringus
Just the fact that Cornell was smart enough to avoid heroin addiction and live past the age of 34.
I love Layne as much as the next.
Cornell didn’t die as a skeleton of his former self.
Cornell was happily married with kids.
He also wrote all the music for Soundgarden, a major portion of Temple of the Dog.. Audioslave…
You know what …
There is not a reason in the world to disagree with you.
The one who thought Layne Staley wrote the lyrics for 98% of Alice In Chains music.
I shouldn’t have even wasted my time educating you.
Second best but still fantastic. Out of the big grunge groups Chris Cornell had the best voice.
Layne and Jerry are 2 of the best harmonizes EVER
Facts. I couldn't tell.the difference on the first listens back in the 90's.
Layne oozes emotion in everything he sings-even when it was damped a bit by his situation later on in his career. Anytime he opened his mouth…..you felt what was inside him. Much love & respect to Jerry Cantrell for his writing abilities. But there is no one who could bring those words to life like Layne. He was truly one of a kind and an extremely amazingly talented front man. Still miss him to this very day…..even though I never personally knew him. He left a pretty big hole in the music industry.
I'm 55 so I was into Alice in Chains from the beginning . I've watched a lot of reactions to this song and you two nailed it , understood what it was about and appreciated the talent . Well done Asia and B J .
Layne's emotions in his singing just cuts to my soul in a way very few other singers can. RIP.
RIP Layne.
"He had a voice that could serenade demons." - Rolling Stone
Jerry Cantrell is Alice In Chains. He definitely keeps going along with Sean. I think Layne at his best is Love Hate Love from Live at The Moore also Man In A Box and Bleed The Freak. His vocals are on full display. He has such a powerful, well controlled and unique voice. You feel Layne not just hear him 🖤 Jerry's great riffs are off the chain. Mike's badass bass and Sean on drums is definitely underrated. Layne could sing the alphabet and it would be awesome. Pearl Jam is made up of entirely different people. Layne passedand the original bassist Mike Starr was let go from the band and replaced with Mike Inez. After many years of not playing they came back adding William Duvall. Should check out Jerry's song Black Gives Way To Blue, he wrote it for Layne. It's beautiful.
Layne was Alice N Chains first. Then they became Alice In Chains after Jerry and Layne got together.
@@tweebthelerker3952 Yes he was, that's true.
you have great taste!
I agree with you 100% but I’d add junkhead live to the list of Laynes best vocals. 🤘🏽
Alice In Chains is still together minus the two dead members. Pearl Jam is made up of entirely different musicians that are equally dope. Love you guys!💛🌾🤗
Oh ok my bad different band. Thank you for watching. 💯
It's possible he's getting confused with the band Temple of the Dog and/or Audioslave which granted have nothing to do w/ Chains but alot to do with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (same era / genre)
Layne and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam did play in a band together called Mad Season and released an album in 1995
Mother Love Bone was the band that would eventually become Pearl Jam. They lost their singer Andrew Wood and asked Chris Cornell of Soundgarden to work with them and formed Temple of the Dog, had Eddie Vedder guest track on a few of the songs. Cornell then went back to Soundgarden and Eddie stayed on as vocalist with the band changing it's name to Pearl Jam.
Hey you recieved some bad info. I knew Layne since1985 I went to school with Sean Kinney AIC's drummer since 7th grade Sean was a class ahead of me. Sean was class of '84 Liberty High school (Issaquah school district) state of Washington. I was classof 86 yeah we were so bad ass we got 86'st in 86. Anyways Pearl came on music scene just after Alice in Chains with the same year as Nirvana hit the Scene. Alice in Chains 1st to sign. Nirvana and Pearl Jam SoundGarden was the very first to sign had 3 albums made when Alice was signed they had same manager Sharon-Chris Cornels girl friend at the time. So no Alice in Chains didnot start PEARL JAM.
This song is about and for Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone who died from a heroin overdose. Layne is even wearing Andy's sweater in the video. I highly recommend Mother Love Bone: Stargazer, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns, Gentle Groove, Man of Golden Words. Great reaction. Stay safe, stay healthy
My first concert was Alice in Chains opening for Ozzy in 1992, the week after this song was released. Layne Staley was absolutely mesmerizing on stage. I've seen other big names and no one compares to the presence he commanded on stage.
The remaining members of Alice in Chains are still called Alice in Chains, they have a new singer and bassist. 2 of the members of Pearl Jam came from Mother Love Bone after the death of lead singer Andrew Wood.
Oh ok that’s my bad. Thanks for the clarification.
Layne Staley was also the lead singer of Mad Season which had Pearl Jam's Mike McCready on lead guitar.
@@AsiaandBJ you know if someone gives you some information and you're not sure about it, you can always fact check it on Google, lol!!!
Black Gives Way To Blue is the musical reaction to Layne's death. Very under-rated.
The greatest band on the planet… still. RIP Layne Staley & Mike Starr💔. I still miss them and I miss that vocal power that Layne. The entire band including Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney. I still listen to songs and what’s going on with them today as well. Such tragedy within the group. I love them all. The stories are in the music they create. Many of about their own experiences. Thank you reacting❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻
"Heaven Beside You" is really good its my favorite song by them and "No Excuses". Layne was also in Mad Season "River of Deciet" is very good
I love Heaven Beside You. It's one of my favorite songs ever as well.
Yes, yes and yes!
First time I ever heard the song I loved it. That's rare. Usually it takes someone once or twice to absorb the gravity of what they're hearing. To this day I still use it as a warm up on drums.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! Loved it since it first came out!
I listen/watch layne everyday tbh & I still shed some tears .
Same. I named my daughter WEILAND LAYNE
I love when Asia said, "man they are badass" it sums it up perfectly. Check out the live version of "Love Hate Love" Layne's vocals peel paint on it.
It was so tragic to love his music and watch him wither away.
Would is the kind of song that sends you in a trance and makes you sing on top of your lungs full of emotions. I was 2nd year college when I bought the special edition cassette tape of this album. Still have it, that cassette tape that has the neon case…
I remember having the Dirt album on tape, damn I'm getting old 😂🤘
me too bro hahaha
Columbia House special for me Haha
So then you're technically 🤔 older than Dirt. 😁
@@ionaford1248 hilarious
Damn, it will worth a lot in a few years. 👍👍
First off I love you guys. Second, I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan and it really pleases me that you guys are checking them out and actually enjoying the music. I hope to see more.
great reaction. This was the first Grunge tune I loved . I can remember being 13/14 ish, and my Uncle giving me the Singles soundtrack to listen too (Film soundtrack, with lots of grunge bands on it) and this track was on there. I loved many of the tracks on that soundtrack, and as a result got into grunge (this and Nirvana) but the track that grabbed me the most and made me want to explore the grunge thing was this tune. Still bangs today, great band ,great vocalist, great chemistry , great songs, great albums.
You really need to see Layne before he was torn down on a live video :"It Ain't Like That" Live from the Moore Theater. He was so full of life and energetic. Please react to that one.. You won't regret it. It's one of my favorite clips of the band.
Check out....AnC at 1313 club. l was at that show. Amazing night. The Moore show is Perfection.
Love that you feel and get Alice In Chains :)... they were just unbelievable...I was blessed to have seen them live before Layne took his life...the Alternative Rock Genre at this time was so raw and real you could not help but feel it. Enjoy you two and your reactions!!
U gotta see Alice In Chains “love, hate, love” live at The Moore. It’s BADASS
Legendary!! His talent and voice is one of the greatest gifts that we received in music.
“Man in a box” is another fantastic song
RIP Layne
"That man is bad ass ya'll". Yep, he certainly was. Top 5 voice in rock history. If you're starting down the AIC rabbit hole you're in for a treat. That album (Dirt) they caught lightning in a bottle. The whole album is 🔥. Lots of exceptional music to explore. Brilliant harmonies with Jerry Cantrell (lead guitar), gritty, sludgy bass and some of the best drum fills ever. Def need to react to Love Hate Love (live at the Moore theater) plus many, many otger songs off Dirt, Facelift and Jar of Flies
Love, Hate, Love... live version. You wont regret it.
This song is a tribute to another Seattle lead singer named Andrew Wood. Andrew's band was Mother Love Bone. When Andrew Wood died, the remaining band members formed Pearl Jam.
You have to listen to Alice In Chains’ Love Hate Love live at the Moore Theater. Crazy good vocals!
Layne also with the guitarist from pearl jam formed mad season river of deceit is a good song. Ive been into the music and found this 3 years ago.
Pearl jam is a completely separate band from AIC. No member of AIC was ever in pearl jam. Idk who told you that😂. Pearl jam's band members were never in AIC. Layne Staley joined a group called mad season later and some members from other grunge bands were in that group. But yeah that's it. No members of Alice in chains were ever in pearl jam. Pearl jam was formed while AIC still had it's original members and both bands were active at the same time.
Matt Cameron is the only member to be simultaneously the drummer of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, they got confused lol.
ould he be confusing a little bit of mother love bone in there? maybe?
Layne from Alice and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam were in Mad Season.
What about Alice Mudgarden? haha Seriously though, he just got Mother Love Bone mixed up because 2 members from what I remember formed Pearl Jam after Andrew Wood died.
Greatest band of all time.
One of my all time favorites🔥🔥🔥
Pearl Jam was formed out of members from Mother Love Bone and then added Edder Vedder on vocals (and McCready on guitar as well?).
Asia, you have an incredible voice!!!! ❤️
Just binge watched about 20 videos from you guys. Love you beautiful people. And you have a great voice Asia!
Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains are 2 of my all time favorite bands. This song is fantastic.
Would? Slaps wonderful bass line power vocals drums guitar everything definitely one of my personal favorite Alice In Chains songs. 💕💕💕
Addiction and love lost forever changed him dramatically He knew he never would. I cry when I see the MTV unplugged show… he was a sweet man, kind .a tortured soul💔🌹😢
BJ, Asia, I'm glad you have appreciation for differing genres of music.
Honestly...its hard in this day and age to find people wh truly appreciate music of many genres.
I think it shows true, honest hearts to mot be lost in one certain area of music.
Thank you for being wonderful people of understanding.
"looks more in the flesh" Well said.
Great job of listening to the fans.
Oh woooow! I can't believe you're doing a reaction to Alice in Chains. This was always one of my favorite bands. Very very talented. Layne had such a unique voice. He had so much pain behind the voice though too. R.I.P.🙏💫💙
i got to hangout and run with the drummer around 1990 in newport beach. met him and some chicas at at a bar then we went to my pad and a few house parties. had no idea until one of the peeps in our group said he played.
Yes, Layne Staley was one of the greatest vocalists to ever walk the earth. He is deeply missed. By the way Pearl Jam was formed by Eddie Vedder joining some of the members of a band called Mother Love Bone who's lead singer Andrew Wood also died of an overdose in 1990. This song was written as a tribute to him as well as many other songs.
All Grunge has so much passion pain and emotion. Eddie Vedder, Kirk, they are all badass in every way.
Such an iconic song. Few people as talented as he was, R.I.P. Layne ❤
I recommend the book, even in audio format, AIC the untold story. The testimonial of people watching Layne learn to sing through the months/years getting better and better until he could imitate anybody nearly perfect. And how he and his friends would get off the elevator and Layne would start imitating the elevator music in a mocking way, but those there would be blown away because it sounded so beautiful.
Also he was a mischievous little shithead on tour as well in the early years.
This song is on the movie soundtrack, SINGLES. The entire soundtrack album is full of grunge and alternative rock bands, like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. It's an excellent album.
I only saw them once but they blew me away. Really heavy, moody sound. They sounded just like they did in this video too. I'll never get the images of Layne in his sunglasses leaning over the edge of the stage like his was trying to sing right in the souls of the people in the crowd.
When he sang, and even still on videos the hair on my arms stands up.
Listen to Mad Season, Alice n chains Pearl Jam and screaming trees all in one band.
Layne did a project with members from Pearl Jam, they called themselves Mad Season, did one epic album, Above, You guys should react to one there songs, good reaction guys, always cool to see people discovering masterpieces.
Yessss he was one of the best singers in my opinion of all times
You guys should listen to don't follow badass tune
Great reaction to a great song and band! So many great songs by Alice In Chains (Layne era), Man In The Box, Love Hate Love, Rooster, Over Now, Heaven Beside Me, Bleed The Freak, Frogs and more. You should also check out the song River Of Deceit and Layne Staley has a song that he recorded before he was Alice In Chains called Tell Me How To Love You, it's great you should check it out please ❤ RIP LAYNE STALEY RIP MIKE STARR
RIP CHRIS CORNELL
RIP ANDY WOOD
Andy has a song that he recorded with his brother "Mama Said, Right" that is good as well
RIP Andrew and Layne and Chris and Prince and Michael Jackson and George Michael...Cobain...Winehouse...the most dangerous job in the world being a Rock star!
AIC has always been my favorite band from that scene.
RIP Layne Staley and RIP Mike Starr (bass)
This song Would was about Andrew Wood the lead singer of Mother Love Bone whos members went on to become Pearl Jam.
So glad you did the original too.🔥♥️🔥
Hi Heidi!!!! Come here often?
@@Frostrazor lol, well,I'm a mod for them soooooo yes, yes I do😂
His voice is incredible. So sad he didn’t survive his personal demons. He truly had a 1 in a million+ gift.
England said America got their punk in Grunge.
These guys shined past the Metal age. I seen Alice in Chains with metal bands and they know the 80's we're over when these guys showed up. Powerful and riveting white man soul.
If you want to see Layne kill it live when he was young, react to Love Hate Love or Bleed the Freak and the Moore theater. The video is in black and white. That will definitely show you the pinnacle of his career before the drugs started affecting him.
It was Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone that passed away, and the members then brought in Eddie Vedder and formed Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone released their debut album a couple days after Wood passed. Great album... you should review the song "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns". The band Temple of the Dog put out a self-titled tribute album to Andrew Wood. Temple of the Dog consisted of the Mother Love Bone Band members, plus Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell (Woods roommate) from Soundgarden on vocals. Check out Hunger Strike from Temple of the Dog. You reviewed Chris Cornell covering Prince "Nothing Compares to you". The connection with Alice In Chains is that this song "Would" is a tribute to Andrew Wood. It's written by AIC guitarist Jerry Cantrell who was a good friend of Andrew's. All of these bands were part of the same scene in Seattle.
I though you went by Would unplugged by the little screen in video, but either way this song is FIRE 🎧♥️🔥
Layne was wearing Shannon Hoon's shirt from Blind Melon that had just recently passed away.
One the soundtrack for movie Singles, made in Seattle, that was huge in early 1990s. RIP LAYNE AND MIKE ❤
AIC was formed 5 yrs before Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone's lead singer Andy Wood(this song is a tribute to him, hence Would?) died and Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament went on to form Pearl Jam with Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder after Chris Cornell asked them to be in the Temple of the Dog Project(another tribute to Andy)...Please react to _Love Hate Love Live at the Moore,_ so raw, so emotive. RIP Layne
Love Layne. I even have a tat I got on a trip to Seattle with a friend that we put together as a grunge tribute. You got to do that it was a ball. We even went to the recording studio where they did a lot of the albums and we were able to stand in the sound booth. So cool.
Only prob with this version of Would? is you dont hear the bass from one of the original band members... Bass player Mike Starr. He plays bass on all the songs from the Albums Facelift, Dirt and the EP Sap.
No disrespect to Mike Inez who is a great bass player here, but.... RIP Mike Starr and Layne Staley.
Check out the Singles party version, or the official video for the bass line. Its epic and made me want to play bass because of it.
"Your Decision" is a great song with Alice in Chains. Has the no longer new co-lead singer William Duvall. Same kinda of feel but little more relaxed.
Damn. Awesome voice. Even before Layne started to sing
Pearl Jam was founded in 1990. Layne passed away in 2002. Lol, not sure where you heard that but it gave me a chuckle. Great reaction by the two of you!
There was a band where the lead singer overdosed and two members then joined Pearl Jam - but it wasn't Alice in Chains. That band was another Seattle band called Mother Love Bone. In 1990 their lead singer Andrew Wood overdosed and guitarist Stone Gossard and Bassist Jeff Ament then formed Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone were awesome as well - they have one album (Apple) and one EP. Very promising future and very tragic about Andy Wood.
Another interesting fact: Andrew Wood was roommates and best friends with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. After Andrew died Chris wrote the songs that were on the Temple of the Dog album - that band was a one-off that included Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam, including Eddie Vedder on the lead single Hunger Strike.
Beautiful voice with the high notes.
You two bring up a good point; with the Unplugged version, Layne was recently out of rehab for heroin addiction. It's a great Unplugged album, but you can see the deterioration in him which is very sad. RIP Layne.
WOW! what an angelic voice Asia!
Alice In Chains is still together. William Duvall is the lead singer now and he’s amazing. William and Jerry do a song called “Your Decision” acoustic style. There’s a video on here. It’s really, really good.
Great band, that chord change towards the end with the metal-like chugging guitar lick at the end of every fourth bar is just sick.
video, I have to tell you your reaction to this video is amazing to me. I’m so glad that you understand such a talent. This band is this is one of my favorite bands of all time and you know what they’re amazing.
What a great voice Asia's got. Really nice.
I could listen to this song all frkn day what a loss RIP LAYNE
top 3 band of mine of all time.. black sabbath and tool being the other 2 .. and to me they where always the most metal of the grunge era bands
Great band Great song , RIP brother 🙏
You have it wrong. There was a band called Mother Love Bone with Andrew Wood as the singer. Adrew died of an heroin overdose and two of the members of the band went on and created Pearl Jam. The song Would ? by AIC was writtent as an hommage to Andrew Wood (Wood = would)
Would is a song about Andrew wood from another band called mother love bone.
Died in 1990 from a heroin overdose.
Consider Andrew really as one of the founders of grunge..
Rest in peace Layne, Andrew, Kurt,Scott,Shannon hoon and the man he made the fork necklace for, and my favourite singer ever Chris Cornell..
Way way too many deaths for a single genre of music..
And I love them all...
Love, Hate, Love live @ The Moore. You will see just how great Layne *really* was.
Please check out “Rain when I Die” great musically and especially vocally!
There was a point where Layne, McCready, and Chris Cornell lived in shitty apartment in Seattle.
rap and rock was so close in 90's start 2000.... Miss me this music ERA
Layne laid his soul bare, such raw emotion and a truly unique voice, he was kind of trapped in himself and his life experiences, wish someone could have reached him, alas... "Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home? Am I gone? Left you here alone..."
one of the most important bands in rock history
Here is the central irony of the song. Alice in Chains were memorializing Andrew Wood, lead vocalist from Mother Love Bone who OD'd on Heroin; "Have I run too far to get home?" "If I would, could you?" Layne dies of a Heroin OD five (?) years later.
10 years after this song
Pearl Jam, ALice in Chains Soundgarden and a few others all came up together in the Seattle scene. There are NO members from Alice In Chains in Pearl Jam nor have there ever been!
Jerry and Layne has a beautiful haunting sound....my favorite is live down in a hole...
Asia has a beautiful voice!
LOVE your voice Asia!
Asia, beautiful ~ Your singing voice is beautiful & incredible! Do u know HOW good u actually CAN be? I know this sounds crazy, but I can hear it when u sing… NOW!
~>Ur vibratos, crescendos, legatos, etc…. I hear what they “could” be while u sing!! Beautiful, just like YOU!!! Truly!!!
❤️❤️❤️🎤🎶🎼👠💋🙏❤️❤️❤️
Got to see Alice in Chains on their Dirt tour .. Simply an amazing show ...Layne was a fantastic writer and performer . Their unplugged show was , to me anyway , one of their best performances ... Take a hard listen to the song Nutshell from the unplugged show , Layne at his best !! ..Enjoy the AIC rabbit hole
