The backstory with WOULD? ... guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote the song for Andy Wood, singer of Mother Love Bone after Andy died of an overdose in 1990 just as Mother Love Bone was going to hit big. After Andy died, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament dissolved Mother Love Bone and re-emerged as Pearl Jam. WOULD? as a title is a play on Andy Wood's name. Layne sang the hell out of WOULD? and ROOSTER on the album, official videos and concerts in 91-93.
WOULD? appeared on the Singles soundtrack because Seattle, Washington as big as the town is, musically it's a small town. All the bands that came out of the Seattle scene knew each other and went to see each other play the club circuit. Cameron Crowe was married to Nancy Wilson of Heart and he wanted to make a movie about the Seattle music scene and made Singles where a fictional band, Citizen Dick opened for Alice In Chains. They used IT AIN'T LIKE THAT from the Facelift album and Cameron Crowe gave them money to demo songs... AIC took the money, they demoed the 6 acoustic songs that are on SAP EP and two songs ROOSTER and WOULD? that ended up on the Dirt album. Cameron Crowe picked through the songs and used WOULD? out of the bunch. Jerry thought the song was strong enough to be included on the Dirt album and that's how WOULD? ended up on the Singles soundtrack and the same version ended up on Dirt.
Whenever you see Bad Animals Studios in the liner notes, at the time the album was recorded, Bad Animals Studios was owned by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Nancy Wilson was married to Cameron Crowe between 1986 and 2010.
Jerry was fine doing backing vocals on the early songs like the ones they played in their clubbing days and on Facelift like the Call and Return of the chorus on MAN IN THE BOX until one day when he was trying to write songs for the SAP EP and the Dirt album, Layne looked at the lyrics and encouraged Jerry to sing more because after all, they were Jerry's lyrics. He should sing them. When Layne and Jerry sang together they achieved the perfect pitch of two voices making one voice.
Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne’s vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
No one noticed Layne had died on April 5, 2002, because he never answered the phone nor opened the door. It took inactivity over the span of two weeks for his ACCOUNTANT to notice something was wrong and called Alice In Chains manager Susan Silver who called Layne's mother to alert her to the situation who then called 911 on April 19, 2002.
And to pour salt in the wound, MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show. Though I do applaud MoPOP including Layne Staley and Mike Starr when they inducted Alice In Chains in the MoPOP Museum of Pop Culture. It's more recognition of Layne (and Mike) than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (thanks to Rolling Stone's criticisms of Layne and his addiction) and the Grammys (who FORGOT him when he died) have EVER done.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life.

Any addict when they are that deep into it, welcomes the end because they are living thru Hell and aware they are putting others thru it as well…. Layne def knew his addiction would probably kill him, as for the lyrics and him kinda prophetically announcing it, he def put elements into the music for sure.. but Jerry was the primary songwriter, musically and lyrically, and he’s stated most of the songs were about Layne and watching him destroy everything.. part of the reason the music is so beautiful and painful.. Jerry was watching his brother kill himself slowly and Layne then singing it and adding that pain into it… they truly are one of the greatest bands ever, totally unique and in their own lane

Yes, Would is about their much loved friend, Andrew Wood, who died of an overdose (heroin I’m 99.9% sure). After this happened, the other band members & Chris Cornell (Wood’s roommate) recorded what was going to be 2-3 songs & ended up being a full album. Cornell talked his friend - Eddie Vedder - into participating also and this album is now known as the only Temple Of The Dog album recorded. At that point 3 of the members of MLB & Eddie Vedder formed a new band, Pearl Jam. The rest is history🤩 AIC’s song in memory of Andrew Wood was this song, Would, which was also a main (if not THE main) song from the movie, Singles. Which, btw, is a really good movie if anyone is interested in watching it. I believe “Would” showcases Layne’s vocal abilities nicely & his awesome way of not following an expected melodic flow. This is one thing I really like & admire about Layne Staley’s way of singing. He was really one in a million💫 A shooting star that I feel privileged to be able to listen to. He was also (I’ve only read this but it’s been said by many ppl) said to be a humble, loving man that did not see himself as “above” anyone or “too good” to stop & speak to others on the street. He also lived his life as he wanted, which is an admirable trait, albeit unfortunate at the same time as this, assumably, shortened is life. One friend said it was easy to love Layne & be friends with him because he was non-judgmental & a very friendly, lovable guy - no matter how big of a star or well-known he became. ❤️ to All ❤️ Keep it real & always be your authentic self & genuine in all your interactions with others 🤩🤩 Peace Out ✌️

"SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN" by Temple Of The Dog (one-time collab album in tribute to Andrew).... Andrew was close friends with them and was Chris's roommate.... that song is beautiful and powerful as well!
SIDE NOTE: Andrew's death caused a ripple in the Seattle (underground) music scene.... when he passed, 2 of the members of his band decided to look for another lead singer. Enter Eddie Vedder.... So out of the tragedy of Andrew's passing came some amazing music and another iconic Grunge band was born.... PEARL JAM.... The history of Grunge is as fascinating as it is tragic..... there's only one band and lead singer left standing.... Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. Love your reactions and breakdowns!

What I like about their lyric style is that it's not immediate, so you feel the song before you fully understand it, and you end up going deeper into the lyrics to search for the meaning with every listen, so there is this abstracting of information that becomes even more satisfying and rich in the long term. A few more AIC song suggestions would be "Rain when I Die", "Dirt", "I Can't remember", "Bleed the Freak", "Sunshine", "Junkhead".

He was emaciated & died alone and when they found him, he had been dead for almost 2 weeks. They found him, because his accountant noticed that he had not made any withdrawals for days and called his mother. Mike Starr (the 1st bass player) was with him last and was also an addict and had lots if guilt about Layne's death. He said in an interview that he wanted to call 911 to get Layne help and Layne wouldn't let him. He died years later also from an overdose. He had been to rehab multiple times with failed treatment. So sad. Such talent gone too early. Layne, Scott, and Mike to drugs and Chris, Chester, and Kurt to suicide. Terrible tragedies. Keep this going!! Thanks guys.

Grunge is all about excellent vocals, dark Drop D tuning, songs about struggles and depression, and the contrast of enlightenment or engulfment of said depression leading to self preservation or self-harm(mostly drugs).

Andy Wood, the singer of MLB was one of the early pioneers of grunge who died to soon. If he didnt die Pearl Jam wouldn't have been formed. Good songs from Mother Love Bone to listen to are 'Stargazer', 'Crown of Thorns', and 'Bone China'.
Also once you do reactions of Alice in Chains unplugged performances you'll see how bad layne was looking. It was one of his last performances live before he went to spend the rest of his days in his Seattle home doing heroin and cocaine, slowly killing himself. He died at 86 pounds.
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soungarden are where its at though.

I'd put the reaction videos on the shelf for a while, but you guys are authentic, smart, and beautiful. Also a great Ying and yang of the analytical analysis of music, and the emotional and rythymic feeling of music.
Really enjoying you going through pretty much all my favorite songs from my youth as I sit here now as a 41 year old man. By the end of this journey hopefully you'll have a new perspective for those who say new music just isn't the same, that's not as much of a generational or old man complaint as many think, but rather our current social media age watering down all of our art in general. It's that attention span rewiring from our cell phones, everybody has got 8 seconds, or we move on, which definitely effects how deep of art you can release without alienating large portions of the general public, lol

Thank you BL! I've learned (listening here) between rap and rock music lyrics is that rap's straight, hard, and to the point. Typically, rappers make an assertion, statement, diss, etc. It's never abstract. Then whatever the bar, it's resolved in a line or two. Even if Eminem's saying, "I don't care" or "Fuck, y'all." he's clearly telling you where he stands. Like Tom MacDonald, Little Simz.
The rock music you're feeding on is like a story. Those lyrics can be unresolved. Or filled with uncertainty. No conclusion nec. No judgment nec. (Seattle nice!) Even though his friend OD'd, Jerry Cantrell doesn't say do/don't do drugs--he's processing and sharing experiences about how it's personal to him. Like Tool. Black Sabbath.
Then again, what do I know? I've listened to metal and rap for decades and don't know half the lyrics to most of my faves. I'm here for the vibe. #TeamLex! Haha
For a complete story that's cool but less abstract, do Iron Maiden, "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

The album this is on called "Dirt" and has an eerie cover a half buried person. Many of the songs are about the vocalist Layne Staley's own addiction to heroin. This album would go multi platinum after its release in 1992, but Staley's addiction would get worse and he would OD and pass away in 2002.

We didn't know what was going on with Layne, back then. It was before the internet. We might have had an inkling from the monthly music publications like "Spin" magazine, or "Rolling Stone" magazine, or just AIC's lyrics themselves, but, if you didn't have a connection to the "inside" then you were "out in space", for all interpreted sequences. Time before the internet was much more locally connected, for the most part, than it is now. It had to be, because, without universal connection, you're only left with local connection, right?

The song “Would?” by Alice in Chains is a meditation on life, love, and regret. The lyrics reference the flood from the biblical narrative, symbolizing the experience of being overwhelmed and devastated in the face of decisions that cannot be undone. The song speaks of an individual drifting and trying desperately to find a sense of self. The chorus, “Into the flood again, same old trip it was back then,” express a longing for something lost, a kind of weary resignation of knowing that the same mistakes will be made again and again.

Yes this is about Andrew wood who was the lead singer of another band that were on the rise during the time that Alice in chains and Soundgarden and everyone was basically coming up through the Seattle scene and grunge was becoming very popular. Andrew overdosed He did too much heroin and that's what the verse have I run, have I run too far to get home means. Temple of the dog which was Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and Eddie vedder from Pearl jam getting together also did a tribute song to Andrew Wood called -say hello to heaven ,you might want to check it out.

Do say hello to heaven by Audioslave Chris Cornell Tribute to Andrew Wood. Layne was heavily addicted to Herion pretty much from the time Alice N Chains formed up until the day he died. So Layne knew the chances of ODing were pretty high. He knew what he was doing to himself but he just couldn't shake his addiction and yes it ultimately took his life.

I remember when these early 90s bands came along smashing and destroying all the heavy bands I grew up with in the 80s. Suddenly almost over night the melodic hard rockers of the 80s were about as popular as std’s. It wss a real weird time. I still haven’t turned 50, but I have experienced SO many trends and changing of the times. When I was 20 only businessen had cellphones, the internet came around when I was 25. My first albums were on cassette, then a few years on vinyl, then cd’s took over before we got mp3 and now back to vinyl. Watched mtv all day when they played Music videos in the 80s. What a ride. Life from 1980-2000 was amazing. Then the shit hit the fan around the same time I turned 30. Fucked a fee Nice chicks along the way at least. The Nice ones without tatoos are still pretty fine. Bleak times now, but at least I have my sauna and a good stereo setup.
