The kid's laughter is just a representation of how life is going on and the world is still turning outside no matter how your own world has stopped when you're in deep pain and grieving a loss. I understood it this way the first time I heard this when it came out because the year before, I had suffered my first major loss in life - through a sudden, completely unexpected death. I remember the first time I walked outside after the phone call that changed my whole life forever, I saw people, cars moving, etc... It was such a surreal moment for me because all I could think was --- how the HELL is everything still going on in the world WITHOUT that person?!? Logically of course I knew no one knew of me, or my loss, or that it doesn't matter anyway because it was just one person who passes away, but part of me just could not understand. My whole world just 🛑 stopped. Like slammed into a brick wall and all reality I knew was different. I guess it's hard to explain of you've never suffered a loss like that but losing someone you loved more than your own life, whether through them leaving you, or actual death, will absolutely shake you like that. It's like a temporary loss of consciousness - pure shock - although you are physically walking and talking. But again, I always thought this was the feeling he was trying to convey - that although you inside are in massive pain, the rest of the world and it's people are oblivious and life goes on.
I've gone through that after people have passed too. Everyone's lives are going on perfectly normal, while the bottom had just fallen out from under me leaving my entire existence changed. It happened after my father died, then my sisters, my best friend and then my mom. Nothing in my life felt normal after each of these losses and I literally felt like I was trying to walk through mud. It's been three years since my mom (Feb. 2020) and I'm still reeling. I still have no idea what my new normal is going to look like.

Back when I was a young man, I wore out two cassettes of this album, then moved up to wearing out CDs... the voice, the lyrics, the total emotion. This is All Time.
This song is about losing someone he loved, the sheets of empty canvas and untouched sheets of clay meaning that he is an artist now without a muse or without inspiration so they lay on touched. The sounds of laughter that he hears outside not bringing him out of the darkness, being surrounded by it but not being able to feel it. The darkness, the whole left inside after the breakdown of a relationship with someone that you loved.
This song takes me back to my high school years at the beginning of the grunge era. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots. It represents the angst of frustrated teenagers.
If you like Eddie Vedder's voice, check out him and Chris Cornell teamed up in Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike. Two of the most amazing voice to come out of 90's music. RIP Chris Cornell
I don’t know why more reactors can’t pull up the lyrics on a phone. Takes all of 5 seconds & would not only help them understand the song, but also prevent lots of misunderstandings & bad takes.
I love all their music. My family and I had the great honor of going to Seattle, Washington to the museum of all the great bands from the grunge revolution. I lived this revolution. Saw the 80’s big hair bands and lived through all these other great grunge rock of the early 90’s. Pearl Jam is one of favorites. Thank you guys.
All the love gone bad turned my world to Black, tattooed all I see, all I am, and all I'll be. You nailed it, I lost wife and kids, got drunk and painted that verse on my living room wall. Was up there 2 years before i could take it down. Music connects with every emotion. Tequila? Does not.
Yes guys, This is a heartbroken Eddie Vedder talking about a "love gone bad". Their video "Even flow" is a good example of their catalogue. Also, Chris Cornell does a beautiful cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares to You" at Sirius XM Studios. These are 90s rock genera artists (called Grunge artists). 🤗🙌🥃
I heard him sing this live and at the end he was singing why'd you leave, come back...come back...and started crying. I reckon every person in the place started crying too.
I remember rushing home at 16yrs old to catch this unplugged episode. I was already a PJ fan but this shit changed my life. I was in awe watching them play unplugged. There's no hiding in that format, either you're good or not.
there were no children he walked outside and heard the kids playing and he felt their laughter, it was his first love and yes he wrote it about her just the best for me we have all had a black in our life and losing love is the hardest thing you can go through I cry everytime but a beautiful cry😢
For those who don't know. This song is (according to Eddie himself) about his first love. The part about the kids is just to show that even laughing children couldn't cheer him up anymore. Pictures faded to black means the memory of their relationship is stained....their love died out. And then the last part is quite self explainatory: I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be, why can't it be mine. She moved on and he wishes they were still together. He misses her dearly. So yeah. A rather emotional love song. And may I add, one of the best of all times. It's just such a good song. He sings it with such unrivaled passion and pain. This version is simply perfect.
@@jen9731 Sorry to hear of your lost love Jen. But if may be so free to give you my advise, you should move on. 11 years is a long long time. We only live once you know. It's really about the biggest loss of a relationship. It's total heartbreak. You should check out the lyrics; they are genius how he expresses it. Eddie Vedder is the bomb. The line about seeing the kids is: I take a walk outside. I'm surrounded by some kids at play. I can feel their laughter so why do I sear? He's so miserable and dark that even kids' laughter makes him angry. My favorite live performance is where the fans sing the entire first verse of Better Man: ruclips.net/video/_4BObpNQqNo/видео.html
i saw this on MTV Live, when it came out....'93? my roommate and I went to a friend's place to watch bc we didn't have cable 😂 a bunch of us watched and every single one of us was leveled by it. a beautiful song about unrequited love; few do it better than vedder ❤
My highschool sweetheart was/is a huge Pearl Jam fan. When we broke up around 2000 this song haunted me. Coming on the radio every time I’d get in my truck. We ended up getting married years later now long divorced but still homies. But man as a teenager that “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life. I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky” was a brutal bar. Great song. Eddie is one of the few great voices from that era that’s still around.
Very glad you liked the song and video. I was fortunate to watch this live on MTV back in 92 when it aired. I've been lucky enough to see Pearl Jam live many times through the years. As far as the song goes, if you get a chance, listen to the lyrics once again. This song is "loosely" based on a relationship in Eddie Vedder's past. But this song is wholly about unrequited love. Most, if not all of us, have felt the emotions that are so prevalent in this song at one time or another in our lives. And Eddie Vedder's performance in this song highlights those emotions so well. The verse that you seem to pick up on (and others have mentioned it) is "I take a walk outside. I'm surrounded by some kids at play. I can feel their laughter. So why do I sear?" Much as others have commented, this is a simple way to explain something that "should" make you happy (children playing and laughing) but instead makes you miserable because of your state of mind at the time. But I would argue the most emotional line of this song (and one of the most emotional lines of any song) is in the last bridge... "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, In somebody else's sky but why, why, why can't it be, oh can't it be mine????" That line in itself is heartbreaking but the pure emotion that Eddie Vedder puts behind it makes you "feel" that emotion as if it were happening to you. Which in most cases it has happened to most of us at least once in our life. Most everyone knows the feeling of a "love gone bad" and the emotional heartache that follows. This song is exactly that. Once again. Glad you enjoyed it. I "personally' think this is the best version of the song due to the raw emotions that he is able to display. But, the studio version off of "Ten" is just as heartbreaking when you hear it. There isn't a bad song off of the album "Ten". If you get the time, it's well worth a listen. Take care my friends. Look forward to more videos.
You were right the first time it’s about a girl who left & hearing joyful sounds of kids playin hurt him when it shouldn’t it should be a happier moment
The kids line, I always read it like He has broken up with someone he loved very much (they left him) and he is out walking and here's kids laughing, but in his down state it feels like they are laughing at him although he rationally knows they are not
I love this so much, you were both moved by the song and music. THIS is what could bring the world together as good music is never wrong and shows us that we’re all alike, no matter what. No opinion is wrong.
That line about the children playing and hearing their laughter. That brings to me a picture of joy. You see kids playing and hear their laughter. Then he asks but "why do I sear". So even though there's still joy and happiness in the world, he can't feel it. He's burning.
Black's lyrics and true meaning all indicates that the song is about learning to "Let Go". We must accept when a relationship is over, we must let her go, to find love somewhere else, be someone else's sky. I know it hurts, that's why we vent our anger against God and the sky like in lyrics "Why? Why can't be mine?" And we fail to accept every single time while shouting "We belong together! We belong together" Maybe we don't belong together, after all. So that's why we have to learn "to let someone go".
The song centers on finding your first love and the eventual loss; loving her so much he wants her to be happy even though he is in anguish over losing her. And yes, it's true.
The song was written by Stone Gossard before Eddie was in the band.. He was sent this song along with 2 others to do the vocals after the original lead singer died.. They were called Mother Love Bone.. Eddie is just one of the greatest lead singers ever.. Amazing performance..
That's called raw emotion. He sang with passion. The rocking in his chair the facial expressions. he was singing from the heart about a love gone bad. It was a beautiful performance. One of my favorite live performances ever.
Totally agree! That line “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life / I know someday you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky / But why… why can’t it be mmiiiiiiiiine?…” is what sold be on Pearl Jam. I think that line and some of the lyrics to “Better Man” are some of the most powerful poetry ever put into rock music. And that is saying a lot.
@@pistolsscaramanga3437 yeah, it's one of those--what did he just say??? I have to hear that again!!! The first time a saw them live was in a small hockey arena in Rochester NY, in 1994 when they played this the crowd was in full blown tears, it was life changing.
To me this is the greatest breakup/heartache song ever written, it describes what everyone goes through but nobody really ever reveals, this is the type of stuff that people keep bottled up inside forever. When someone becomes distant for a minute and you ask what's wrong and they say nothing and go on like everything is great, it's because they stopped for a second to visit a memory but they probably won't ever talk about it. I think women in particular visit these memories maybe more often and sometimes they cry a tear or two and that is confusing for most guys but that's a part of everyone's life and the only thing that you can really do is try and build for a better future and offer love and support so those memories become faded over time.
One of the most unique things about the grunge era was how they spoke about their personal trauma. Whether it was Eddy Vetter, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain or the great Chris Cornell, they all probably put more emotion into their songs and performances than I’ve ever seen anywhere. Supposedly, this was about Eddie Vedder‘s first marriage and his divorce. Haven’t seen the documentary but apparently there was a short one on it somewhere. And yes this is one of the greatest live performances of all time.
Song was written about a breakup. He contrasts kids' laughter with his sorrow. Key verse: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky. But why can't it be mine?" Also check out "Jeremy" & "Better Man" Live
I know it means something different for everyone but to me, this is the emotion right after the breakup or heartache. Starting from the very beginning of the song "sheets of empty canvas and untouched sheets of clay, laid outspread before me as her body once did." So to me, it's about losing everything important to you and having to start over.
My boy Jamel says that when a singer closes their eyes to sing they are going to the place that those lyrics resonate. Jesus, I feel that. When Eddie sings this song, I remember every relationship I fucked up, every unexplained breakup, and all of life’s whys that burn from the inside. “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life/I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky/but why why why can’t it be… can’t it be mine?”
always remember, music is a type of art, as is anything. anytime anybody sees, hears, feels, tastes, or smells literally any thing that exists, they have the eligibility to call whatever that thing may be “art” and nobody can argue with it. thats the beauty of art, it is the most accepting and open minded thing you’ll ever experience. whatever you think hes saying in his lyrics or anybody else’s lyrics is whatever you decide it is.
Strip down acoustic version showcasing one of the greatest bands of all time and quite possibly the best singer songwriter, storytelling poet of our generation. Pearl Jam is the only band that I would recommend new listeners checking out their live performances in addition to studio recordings.
He's an artist, and his, "sheets of canvas lay spread out before him, as she once did". But since she left, all his paintings have been tattooed with black.
It’s a loss of girl he loved. He references her as the “sun”, or in other words a star. “All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun” the horizons are senses. He was totally into her. “And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass Of what was everything All the pictures have all been washed in black Tattooed everything” The broken glass is symbolic of the relationship and pictures don’t mean anything anymore. Tattooed permanently. Lots of crushing references. Eddie Vedder’s music always sounded like he was damaged. Surprised he made it out of that era when many of his counterparts didn’t. Like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, etc.
Love your take on the song. Great thing about music is everyone can interpret it their own way. Your honest reactions in the moment are refreshing. Looking forward to seeing more.
Listening to Pearl Jam "This is sad though..." welcome to Pearl Jam and the 90s. I doubt there has ever been a decade of more depressing music and I loved every minute of it. As a teenager, especially one with serious stuff going down, it felt like every song was ripping my soul out of my body. Even though it made me face the dark in me, I think it really helped me deal with that stuff.

If you like Eddie Vedder's voice, check out him and Chris Cornell teamed up in Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike. Two of the most amazing voice to come out of 90's music. RIP Chris Cornell
Word.
Good suggestion man

It’s good to read into the lyrics but don’t let that take you away from enjoying the song.
I know, right?
I don’t know why more reactors can’t pull up the lyrics on a phone. Takes all of 5 seconds & would not only help them understand the song, but also prevent lots of misunderstandings & bad takes.
I love all their music. My family and I had the great honor of going to Seattle, Washington to the museum of all the great bands from the grunge revolution. I lived this revolution. Saw the 80’s big hair bands and lived through all these other great grunge rock of the early 90’s. Pearl Jam is one of favorites. Thank you guys.
MTV 's Unplugged series was one of the best shows they had.
Neck and neck with Alice In Chains for me.
Welcome to Pearl Jam! U guys are in for a treat! May I suggest Evenflow as your next one
Also, try to stick to MTV unplugged for your first time pearl jam experiences.... the whole set was fiiiiiiire
All the love gone bad turned my world to Black, tattooed all I see, all I am, and all I'll be. You nailed it, I lost wife and kids, got drunk and painted that verse on my living room wall. Was up there 2 years before i could take it down. Music connects with every emotion. Tequila? Does not.
Yes guys,
This is a heartbroken Eddie Vedder talking about a "love gone bad".
Their video "Even flow" is a good example of their catalogue.
Also, Chris Cornell does a beautiful cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares to You" at Sirius XM Studios.
These are 90s rock genera artists (called Grunge artists). 🤗🙌🥃
Evenflow is a great video for their heavier performance!
One of the best ever from the 90s.
Black is the best PJ song.
1000%
If not the best!!!! 💕
I heard him sing this live and at the end he was singing why'd you leave, come back...come back...and started crying. I reckon every person in the place started crying too.
A lot of grunge artists sang about thier personal traumas, that's one of the reasons you hear all that raw emotion. You feel that shit.
I remember rushing home at 16yrs old to catch this unplugged episode. I was already a PJ fan but this shit changed my life. I was in awe watching them play unplugged. There's no hiding in that format, either you're good or not.
One of THE best live performances EVER! ALMOST CRY EVERYTIME I SEE THIS! And I don't even own a PJ cd.... Wow
You two should react to Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike. It has both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder singing.
"Sounds like he in some state of misery". That's an understatement.
there were no children he walked outside and heard the kids playing and he felt their laughter, it was his first love and yes he wrote it about her just the best for me we have all had a black in our life and losing love is the hardest thing you can go through I cry everytime but a beautiful cry😢
If the guy left you, you might wonder if it was real love, because if people truly love eachother they don't leave eachother. I do feel your pain but it's time to chose for yourself instead of living in the past over a guy that left. I know you can do it!
The song was written by Stone Gossard before Eddie was in the band.. He was sent the song along with 2 others to do the vocals after the original lead singer died.. They were called Mother Love Bone..
Imagine dumping Eddie Vedder…
@@moderndaydrifter3205 To prevent confusion. The instrumental part was written by Gossard who send it to Vedder as part of a demo to find a singer for Pearl Jam. The lyrics are written by Vedder himself.
I have never seen Asia feel the heartache of the artist more than in this reaction. You can see the moment she realizes the anguish in this song.
Black was recorded in 1991. Eddie Vedder had his first child in 2004. This has NOTHING to do with him having a child.
I saw them live a few years back and they killed it❤
Crazy man you guys have been exposed to like 50 years in music….music that I have had to wait for to come out over the course of my entire life…I’m 57…I think it’s great and I think you guys are too…keep it to the grindstone 100000 subs quick….The band and Starbucks are from Seattle so Eddie was caffeine trippin’ …God Bless Ya
I been waiting for you guys to do this one. Thanks, love your reviews.
Their song “Jeremy” WITH VIDEO (not shouting, just emphasizing lol) is a MUST- Love y’all! 💖💙🤘🏼👍
i saw this on MTV Live, when it came out....'93? my roommate and I went to a friend's place to watch bc we didn't have cable 😂 a bunch of us watched and every single one of us was leveled by it. a beautiful song about unrequited love; few do it better than vedder ❤
5:02 - “Yeah, it definitely sounds like he’s in some state of misery.” 😂 Welcome to Pearl Jam, enjoy the ride 🤘
I'm going to chime in with the folks asking for Temple of the Dog doing Hunger Strike. Can't beat Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell together.
That line about the children playing and hearing their laughter. That brings to me a picture of joy. You see kids playing and hear their laughter. Then he asks but "why do I sear". So even though there's still joy and happiness in the world, he can't feel it. He's burning.
Glad you enjoyed. Keep digging deeper. Love it
Raw emotion and deep poetic lyrics conveyed by an amazing voice and a fantastic band. It doesn't get much better than this!
Why can't be mine?"
And we fail to accept every single time while shouting "We belong together! We belong together"
Maybe we don't belong together, after all.
So that's why we have to learn "to let someone go".
A lot of times Eddie will walk off to the side of the stage after performing Black and cries his eyes out. The all time best love song ever!
Goosebumps whenever I hear Pearl Jam. Their albums shaped my late teens. They’re one of the best. My biggest crush of all times is Eddie. Lol
for me, it´s the best acoustic performance, 90's forever
BJ always picking up the right feels .. Asia clincliy overviews it true right away
You can do this entire MTV unplugged and every single song is amazing!
This was one of a kind performance. So pure and raw something you seldom experience. Does remind me a bit of child in time performance
The song centers on finding your first love and the eventual loss; loving her so much he wants her to be happy even though he is in anguish over losing her. And yes, it's true.
I’ve seen Pearl Jam live 21 times… In 2003 I saw them three times in seven days… This man’s voice is magic ❤
Eighteen times here, including their first Chicago show. And he still sings these songs with so much passion and emotion.
When they first released black they didn’t want the song to become popular because it was very true to him and very heartfelt
The song was written by Stone Gossard before Eddie was in the band.. He was sent this song along with 2 others to do the vocals after the original lead singer died.. They were called Mother Love Bone.. Eddie is just one of the greatest lead singers ever.. Amazing performance..
❤
That's called raw emotion. He sang with passion. The rocking in his chair the facial expressions. he was singing from the heart about a love gone bad. It was a beautiful performance. One of my favorite live performances ever.
One of saddest lines ever written, is in this song.
“Beautiful life” line, brutally good.
THE saddest line ever written
@@pistolsscaramanga3437 Release also has some really powerful lines. Wishlist as well.
Eddie is one of the best. Sometimes it's hard to understand him, tho, just his iconic voice! Love it!! ♥️🤘
OMG DIVE INTO THIS BAND. SO MANY GREAT SONGS.
I think women in particular visit these memories maybe more often and sometimes they cry a tear or two and that is confusing for most guys but that's a part of everyone's life and the only thing that you can really do is try and build for a better future and offer love and support so those memories become faded over time.
i always love when BJ just jams to the music and asia is feeling every bit of it :D
Just like candy reference!! 😂👏🏻🙌🏼
Thanks Candy!❤
No problem. This is one of my favorite songs and performances.
I first heard this song when I was 22 and I still get goosebumps when I hear it. Great performance by Eddie Vedder and company
You literally started with their best song! Pearl Jam all the way!!!!
Such an awesome performance I actually took my eyes off of asia for a second. Such a beautiful face.
This song Black was the first song I heard from Pearl Jam and I was hooked ❤
Chills..every time..1 of the most relevant and relatable songs ever written and performed..great review/reaction
Childrens laughter should make you smile and feel happy inside. He kept hearing the children but it didn’t hinder his pain that he’s feeling. He sears
DANG y'all are showing music to everyone hearts
Strip down acoustic version showcasing one of the greatest bands of all time and quite possibly the best singer songwriter, storytelling poet of our generation. Pearl Jam is the only band that I would recommend new listeners checking out their live performances in addition to studio recordings.
Love seeing people’s reaction to this the first time, it’s a masterpiece
You’ve started with their best song indeed 😉 maybe “State of Love and Trust” from the same show would be a great next step guys 🔥🔥🔥
Back in the 90’s this song was the best track for us 70’s Babies! Great reaction my fellow ATLiens!
He's an artist, and his, "sheets of canvas lay spread out before him, as she once did". But since she left, all his paintings have been tattooed with black.
Man I just love watching people react to this beautiful tragic song and amazing performance. You can’t help but feel something
It’s a loss of girl he loved. He references her as the “sun”, or in other words a star.
“All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun” the horizons are senses. He was totally into her.
“And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black
Tattooed everything”
The broken glass is symbolic of the relationship and pictures don’t mean anything anymore. Tattooed permanently.
Lots of crushing references.
Eddie Vedder’s music always sounded like he was damaged. Surprised he made it out of that era when many of his counterparts didn’t. Like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, etc.
I come here to watch you guys react to metal and I find myself singing along to your theme music. Full circle.
Love your take on the song. Great thing about music is everyone can interpret it their own way. Your honest reactions in the moment are refreshing. Looking forward to seeing more.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody's else sky"...just heart breaking
Him rocking in his chair is what happens when people actually write their own songs… It comes from the soul, not words somebody else wrote for you.
He also says: I hope you have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the sun in someone's sky but why can't it be mine. I hope that helps? Love you guys 🙏✌️😎🎶
God this song takes me back to the 90s and college...just that sound and vibe of it
My favorite Pearl Jam song.
