The other great lead singer voice of the Grunge era is Chris Cornell (R.I.P.) of Soundgarden (and Audioslave). I recommend Soundgarden's biggest hit, "Black Hole Sun". I'll undoubtedly get ripped about Layne Staley (R.I.P.) of the band Alice in Chains, and Scott Weiland (R.I.P.) of Stone Temple Pilots, and you should absolutely listen to some of their songs to get a real feel for the Grunge movement as a whole.

I cry when I hear this song. It sounds like a grown man crying, wailing about the loss to him of a woman he loved so dearly, that he worshiped but she moved on.... Oh my gosh. I love Pearl Jam.
He went through a really bad breakup, which inspired this song.
For some bands I can’t pick just one favorite, but with Pearl Jam, *Black* is easily my favorite of theirs.
I’ve always loved Pearl Jam & Eddies voice blew me away the very first day I heard it many years ago. This is my favourite version of this song, because it really pulls on the feels for him which makes the feels pull on me & I just want to give him a hug & cry with him! I love Pearl Jam & just about every song. But this one is my favourite because of the emotions he makes me feel with those lyrics. I think most of us have been there. 😢

I could go on but hell they have over 300 songs. Release- live in Holland is a religious experience. Definitely look that one up.

My late wife used to say Eddie's voice was like sandpaper that you wanted to feel on your eardrums. I drove her to North Carolina to see Pearl Jam and it was one of the best concerts ever!

Eddie Vedder has an incredible way of invoking emotion. He makes you feel every note and every line.
She asks how he's able to do that.
Pain. Pure, unfiltered pain and emotion
Pain... pain causes those wonderful sounds. Everything you've ever been through, Everything you wish you said or done just comes out in raw cries from your soul.
Eddie Vedder goes beyond technique. As a singer, he doesn't do all these inane runs, and he doesn't have a super huge range. But in my opinion, there is no other singer that can convey as much sheer emotion as Eddie.
That raspiness, that scratching of the voice, like claws scratching on rocks, it's a form of art that is disappearing, few people are teaching it anymore, and it's a beautiful way to convey and capture emotions as you can see in this song. I hope this way of singing doesn't disappear.

It always makes me so happy to see the reaction of someone that I know wasn't alive when this originally aired, or was way too young to remember it. I remember this MTV unplugged episode vividly, and Pearl Jam was definitely a huge part of my younger life. His voice is so unique. You instantly know who's singing.
The song is a Sun/Earth metaphor throughout. The Earth requires the Sun, the Sun would be just fine without it.
Cautionary tale to making someone the center of your universe when it's not equally felt.

You need to listen to Temple of the Dog, "Hunger Strike." Chris Cornell wanted to pay tribute to his deceased friend, Andrew Wood, the singer for Mother Love Bone. Chris teamed with the surviving members, and new singer Eddie Vedder to make a tribute album, and Eddie would join the members of Mother Love Bone to form Pearl Jam.
I love Eddie, Pearl Jam is my favorite band ever, but if she’s going to do anything by temple of the dog… Say hello to Heaven is the one. Really just do the entire unplugged album, and then do Alice In Chains unplugged, and then Nirvana unplugged… All three killed it 🤘🏼
Don’t mean to offend you but please please do not compare Eddie Vedder to John Mayer. Nothing against John Mayer but Eddie is in a whole other level. Seen both of them live and John Mayer is no where close to Eddie. Good reaction though.

Vedder is my king. I was 18 the first time I saw them on Mtv for the alive video and was hooked. His voice is all his own and you always know it the minute you hear it. Listen to him talk and his singing voice makes sense! I have only gotten to see them 3 times and I cry at least once every show.....
I have been a fan since their debut, way back in the 90's. So emotional, and like a barely contained explosion feeling. definitely check out "Jeremy" next.

This song was very personal to Eddie. It was about a very bad break-up. You can see how his body language changes through out the performance. his hands start up and he is a bit open, then his hands and arms close up when it starts getting more painful, and then end is just pure agony.
If I remember, they rarely played this song live because of the emotion.
A great follow on is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. It highlights Chris Cornell and Eddie as singers.
He was sick, thats part of how he got that sound.

This is truly a very powerful performance-indicative of the ‘big guns’ (him, Layne, Chris, etc) - of that era. They just had a way of plucking the strings of your soul. They didnt just sing - they push out sounds with such emotion capable of bringing people to their knees (so to speak). They go ALL IN - and we go with them.

This is the first song I cried to as a kid. The emotion in his voice is insane
It is and its sad that Miss Maggie Renae couldn't FEEL any of that, instead she's looking for vocal tricks and trying to explain them.
He didn’t want to put this on the album because it was too painful for him but they talked him into it. When he says All I taught her was EVERYTHING, he then whispers that’s ALL. Only in this version. It’s killer. Then his flip to his head voice back down to chest in one motion no breathe is amazing.
The rasp is “fry”. If you can do the sound from “the grudge”, you can do the gravel sound. You should check out Will Ramos’s laryngoscopy vid to see distortion in the throat.
That gritty sound is called soul. You have to have it to do it.
You won't hear music made today like this . My generation which is Gen X , WE GREW up in the two best generations, kids of the 80s and teens of the 90s.

Back in the day the singers could actually sing live with power and control over their voice. No auto tuning here. I am glad I was there for this.
One of the greatest live performances captured on video. Eddie's gift is/was his ability to put so much emotion into his singing. 30 years later, he's still doing a great job but those early years...wow. Incredibly, he was somewhat ill that day and was unsure about singing, and that may explain any "cracks" in his voice, but many feel that it added to his sound, not detracted from it. Another great live song to watch is of Pearl Jam live at Pink Pop 1992 performing their song Porch. It is somewhat interesting from a singer analysis point of view, but more so in the complete performance. 🎶 (lol I couldn't find the emoji because I was looking for it to be black but it's blue here on YT, lol)

i love the video of him playing the Ukulele singing "Here comes the sun" in South Africa for the Orphanage (i believe thats what it was), some people can just captivate in any situation. He tells a funny story then too lol

I have a friend who just broke up with his gf. And when we were drinking and it's a hard drink. I started to play Black as background he ignored it first. "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why can't it be mine". When he hears this part he started to be quiet. Suddenly he stand up and begins to throw stuff.
This song was about his wife and their divorce. He actually teared up after this performance. He wiped his eye with his sleeve and he had to take a few moment to compose himself. You can see it at the very end of this video. It's just as powerful as the performance, itself.
A little history on Unplugged. Unplugged on MTV arrived right after the Milli Vanilli controversy where they won a Grammy and then had to come out and admit they lip synced everything and it was other people singing the music. Unplugged was MTVs way of ferreting this stuff out. You had to be able to prove your chops, play and sing well without any electric or electronic help. I really wish they'd bring this back.

Once of the nest vocalist in rock in the last 50 years. Chris Cornell and him were in a band together for a minute look that up. Beautiful listening to them two harmonize together.
It is not about the technicallity, its about emotion,love, anger, sadness he put in his song, his raspy and fast verbrato voice are Eddie's natural voice,try feel their songs, if keep relying on texhnics, tempo, measures,etc etc. your just like a human metronom....

The starting of the 2nd verse was improvised. He didnt sing it that way on the album. And also the outro. But now this is the only way I can hear it. I STILL get goosebumps from it.

Eddie could be an opera singer… his voice is huge
This performance has a LOT going on. If I remember correctly, orignally, this was part of early demos (instruemtally) by Mike McCready and Eddie was presented with these tapes and came up wtih the lyrics / vocal performaance as an AUDITION to join this band.
The subject matter of the lyrics was incredibly personal to Eddie and he was NOT happy with the popularity of the song and never intended for it to be a big hit that so many people would know. It was SUPPOSEDLy about a very personal relationship that ended for Eddie that he did not wish to end.
Then; the unplugged performance happened as it was a big song for them. So, they did it on unplugged and Eddie forgot a bit of the song so early on it went in a bit of differnt direction lyrically (I prefer it ^_^ ) and later in the song he, again, went in a different direction and imporvised lyrically when he started saying WE BELONG ... WE BELONG TOGETHER - which is NOT on the studio version.
It is alreadya HIGHLY emtional song but in the live performance it elevates all of that for the audience and the performer to be something that could potentionally be considered one of the ultimate RECORDED emotional performances of a song of all time.

Yea. That wasn't Eddie being artistic at the end of the song. That was pure emotional pain being radiated into the atmosphere via his voice. Its a very personal song for him, and he completely lost himself in it for a few moments, there

This was the first song of theirs I had ever heard and my favorite.

The description you read at the beginning had one blatant mistake. Pearl Jam did the opposite of promoting grunge music. They were often weary of promotional efforts.
They promoted causes they believe in, but I believe they promoted themselves (and grunge as an art form) as little as possible.

Any time I see a new reaction to "Pearl Jam - Black" I'll watch it just to see how different people react to their first listen of the song.
I'd suggest checking out some Mike Patton stuff as he has a 6.5 octave range and is versatile in his vocal styles. His stuff with Faith No More like Midlife Crisis, Ashes To Ashes and I Started A Joke will give a little insight to his talent.
The magic is his voice and his story. You need to learn to be real.
To me, this is the signature song for male heartache. all of us that have experienced the loss of love from a woman we truly cherished knows exactly how he felt writing this song. this is powerful... much like Sugarland's Stay. Anyone who's not seen that official video should go check it out. Another great singer in pain, and just like Eddie... brave enough to share that pain with the rest of us so it can comfort us in our time(s) of need...
