Great tutorial. I learned a couple steps that I wouldn't have guessed. It also caused me to look up how to convert AE text to paths, which is just right click on the text object while the text tool is still active and choose to convert to shape. I feel like you may have missed a concept though, so might confuse some people. The path is independent of scale. So the path is a child of scale. When you copy the path, it's current scale doesn't come with it. It's copied at 100% scale, and that's sort of the same with position as well. It's position is relative to the anchor point. So if you want path's scale to match, you should scale the path itself. You can do that in a similar way you would in photoshop actually. Click on "path" to select all the points, then hit Ctrl+T to free transform that selection. Scale/move those until they are in the correct position. Now when you copy and paste that keyframe, it stays in the correct position. Also you're right clicking and choosing rename. Did you know Enter = Rename (keyboard enter, not numpad) I also learned an interesting tidbit. This is straight up moving each point number to the corresponding one. The start point always goes to the next start point. You can change which point is the beginning/end to make the shape flow better. In your ship example, if you just add the correct number of points to your triangle to match your rocket ship, then make sure both have beginning/end at say the tip of the rocket ship and top of the triangle, you'll get a much better result, without all the editing. Now, you still get more control of the actual morph the way you did it, but less control of the triangle shape in your case.
This is some good advice, I was frustrated by how much extra tedious fine-tuning I had to do just to make sure all my shapes were aligned and sized proportionally. The text is a bit tricky, I can only get the shape to fill one letter. Is that the limit of the tool?
Hi! I know this is an old comment and AE has changed a lot since... But could you explain to me how can I change the start/beginning point of an already made shape?
I had to make a icon animation type thing for a school assignment and my teacher is incompetent so he didn't teach anything. Thank you so much for this video! It really helped me
Thanks for this. Helped me a lot. I've found that sometimes adding a circle path between shapes can make it smoother. For instance: between a triangle and a square it gives it more of a "blob" feel, instead of just adding an anchor point. If that makes sense.

I was going crazy trying to figure out why my shapes were twisting. (circle to heart)... thanks to your tutorial I realized that it was because the heart was a vector shape from Illustrator, while my circle was a shape layer in AE. Once I realized from your tutorial that I just had to manually adjust the vertices it worked great. All other tutorials only show the first method (two AE created shape layers). Thanks for taking the extra step to explain an actual real world use scenario.
yes you can do it with anchor point go to first keyframe of the path open anchor point and set it to the middle then select keyframe after that go to the next keyframe of the past then again make the anchor point to middle and select keyframe and done.
this is an amazing tutorial! you were so clear about every little step and it was so easy to follow! Things that I've been trying to figure out I learnt in a sec thanks to you!
Solid Fix for Complex .PNG's created in Illustrator. 1. Create simple square/rectangle outline shape & align in center of the artboard. 2. Create your first graphic using the outline shape as a guide. 3. Create second graphic using the outline shape as a guide. 4. Remove guideline layer & Export as .PNG ***Make sure you select USE ARTBOARDS when saving*** 5. BOOM, your .PNG's are now aligned properly and the same size. Oi! This took me half a day to figure out! I still have to tackle the reshape points but so far it's working well!

Great tutorial. The jerking motion is probably because you are morphing 4 points to 3 so one point disappears. When you morph 3 points into 4 it creates one seamlessly. Just a thought. This was a very helpful tutorial. thank you. :)

Hello! Thank you for your nice tutorial! I just have a question for this. I was following this tutorial and when i have three shapes on a same layer, the center of each shapes are keep changed. it doesn't fix at center. :'( when i play it. each shapes are keep moving from center to up and to down and to center again.. kind of like this... what is wrong with me..?? :'(
I've just found that keyframing the anchor point whenever there is a path change keyframe fixes this (you then have to copy both the path and anchor point keyframes from the triangle to the square, for example)
Really enjoyed the video which was also very helpful. I have a question though: when I paste the keyframe of a Bezier path it goes in a totally different position with a different dimension (so then I have to place it in the right position manually). Do you know if I'm doing something wrong (when I copy and paste)? Thank you for the answer and for this video too!
Thanks for the tutorial. However, I'm running into a small problem. Whenever I try to morph the shape, I can't get both shapes to be centered on the screen. As a result, I can only get 1 shape to remain in the center of the screen while the other shape usually drifts/positions itself into another side of the screen. Does you know how to solve this problem? Thank you very much!
to solve the problem you have to key the anchor point to the center, press the anchor-point time watch when you are on the first keyframe, than align the anchor point of the square, then go to the circle and center the anchor point and then to the triangle, and voila the your problem should be solved ;)
Hi, I activate the scale (as 7:42) and the position keyframe put it in the rectangle shape, then I go to the triangle shape and I align it to the center (it will create another position keyframe ). Hopes this will solve your problem.
@@TenderHooligan I found that keyframing the anchor points on each individual shape layer & copying that over to the morphing shape layer just like you do with the path keyframes, it fixes this problem since you are now specifying the center point for each shape.
yes you can paste complex paths and have them morph without them flipping, you just have to make sure they have similar number of anchor points and to have the anchorpoints correspond bwtween shapes..........you could just add more anchor points to the triangle on the sides that the rocket has more anchor points that way you don't have to move them by hand or even to make sure they line up correctly since they will be on a straigh side of the triangle.
Hey. thanks for the tutorial. I tried this but when I morph it from square to circle it moves away. how to align it to the center? did try alining it on the align tab, still didn't work.
Ive been following this step by step, but after i paste the path keyframes into one layer, they move around the screen when morphing instead of staying centered, even after I center align and move the mid point back to the middle of the shape. Any help?

Yout should mention that the anchor points for the layer AND the shape should be zero, and the position for the shape too, so only the the position for the layer is different from zero. Otherwise the changing shapes never stay in place.
when I copy and pasted the triangle path onto the square path I hit play and the square just goes flying off the screen for some reason how do I fix this?
The jerking issue around 6:50 is because your anchor point shifted, or at least that's what it would be if it was in Animate CC which is what I'm more used to.
For not having the first keyframe problem, just put all the properties of the shape (path, stroke, fill and transform) into a new groupe ("add Empty Group"). It will fix the bug ;) Cheers
Also I know this may be very basic but there were three hang-ups I encountered while trying to do follow along with this. 1) There is a difference between masking out a shape on a solid and a shape layer. This is explained here: ruclips.net/video/c2x6FvIRwHU/видео.html 2) I found that this same morphing worked very well without starting with a new solid layer. I preferred just making a shape layer. 3) Finally, my morph was migrating to the right or away from the original position. I tried to drag the second position back to its origins and that did not work. I finally used the arrow keys right upon pasting the keyframe and positioned the pasted new shape back to the origin and that helped keep the morph in the same location.
Hi! when i copy/paste from circle to rectangle key path. The circle isn't in the center...Could you tell me please, how to fix it? ( anchor points always are in the center, but it's lost when I copy keyframes from path to path )Thank you!
I haven´t tried this yet, but l think that u can make a letter modifying the vertex points (if the letter is made in illustrator) and conerting in the other letter
On the 2nd method of changing the shape of the rocket into the triangle when I did this (on a simple shape) it changed the 1st keyframe as well into the new shape, need this for an approaching college deadline asap if you can. Thanks.
