They recreated the wall painting from the Knossos temple from Crete civilization which was the beginning of the western civilization

I wonder why didn't the French organiser show off their famous "Phantom of the Opera", theatrical ballet edition, as one of their cultural performances, high-end fashion cat walk show to exhibit their prestigious achievements and exquisite tastes in the fashion industry, a quick, creative and concise show of choreographed presentation presenting the richness of the French culture...and a bit of their histories... all these should have been excellent ideas and themes for them to show the essence of the French culture to the world...

That's funny because the references you mentioned were actually duly represented in the opening ceremony. It started with the phantom of the opera and a high-end fashion cat walk show also happened on stage. Have a look at the designers of the fashion show, you're not gonna be disappointed.

There would be humans, dancers and other gymnasts performing something eye catching. In Paris Olympics everything else except the boat ride was horrible af. Singing, some dancing and explicit perversion. Celine Dion's performance was great, but that's it. Go watch the Beijing or Athens opening ceremony to know what I am saying.
Beijing was seamlessly great; Athens was profoundly the best; London cauldron lighting was meaningful; Sydney was the friendliest Olympics ..also the best turnover ceremony (sydney-athens) was emotionally the best

As a big fan of Gojira and of European history, I actually really enjoyed it. The song they chose was a French Revolution song and Marie Antionette is kind of the symbol for disconnected rich people in power. The stuff that’s been going on in the world and specifically in France, I actually think it was great.
Its was the representation of French culture, the Current Dead Culture of France.

The Torino and Barcelona openings were good. I enjoyed the opening done by France. It was a history lesson. I especially liked having to he athletes come down the river on boats, the Can Can dancers, the references to Les Mis and the Phantom of the Opera Gojira and the Opera singer singing La Habanera from the opera Carmen, the clowns in the library, and the fashion show. So many Americans are ignorant of French culture.

Those who don't appreciate the Paris opening ceremony.... It was about the French history, arts, traditional culture and pop culture. I only rewatch the opening ceremony from the beginning 2 days ago. The torch bearer who entered the empty stadium was in the Emilie Poulain movie, he was one of the neighborhood character. Then it's show news around the world mentioned that the opening ceremony is not at the stadium, that style was borrowed from the movie Amelie.

I loved every Olympic opening ceremony since Greece in 2004, but Paris has become one of my favorites to date. The art, the music, the celebration of French culture, the French Revolution, the celebration of prominent figures, and the overall message of inclusivity…all struck me as beautiful.
For me…Celine Dion stole the show. She was such an angel as she sang above the city skyline. I think this Opening Ceremony emphasizes, not just being French, but Parisian…rich culture, art through architecture, sophistication, perhaps high end indulgence.
The show was, magnifique! 👏👏👏👏👏
