I’ve been trying to do a paint correction for many weekends. Due to my job and more pressing matters, I only get a few hours each session. So far it’s been many sessions of trial and error. I started off very light. I used a $17 polisher with a terry cloth bonnet. Lol now that I know better. The Guy in Harbor Freight said it would be what I needed. Nothing changed. I then did a Hand application. I’m not strong enough for that ( 60 year old female) so I bought a DA polisher - nothing expensive. A Bauer. I watched more videos than I care to admit. My second attempt was using McGuires Ultimate compound with a polishing pad. I’m still afraid o cutting too deep. It helped but not by much. More videos for the next week until I get time off. 3rd attempt was McGuires ultimate compound with a green course foam pad. Better but nothing like I see in these videos. And I’m not chasing perfection. Either. I switched to turtle wax compound. Same results. Swirl marks still visible to the naked eye. I was getting nowhere fast. Now I have a haze on the car that I can’t get off. Many of us experience this but won’t admit it. I’m stuck. I’m scared to ruin the paint I had no choice and bought a gauge for paint on metal. I can’t keep guessing. 😂. My paint was reading 6-7 mil and a few spots, where I was having the most trouble, I got a reading over 9. Passenger side. Does that mean it was Repainted ? I’m guessing. I used Griots compound with a polishing pad Now I’m getting real results but knew I could get better. Tried one spot with Griots Compound and a compound pad. Ta Da!! Still could be better in some areas where the paint read higher. The DA has problems in that area of the car. It’s hopping and stops spinning. So annoying. It’s just a small area I did today - 1/2 the hood but now I know a good combo for my paint situation. I’d like to try McGuires 202 polish with a compounding pad on the trunk. Compare to using a polishing pad like it calls for and then decide how to proceed. Don’t know why McGuires has jumbo size bottles only. Not like I’m going to need it in the near future. I just need a small bottle. I did all the steps prior. Wash, clay, iron remover, etc. I even used the iron remover as a lube for the clay which really worked well. Wear gloves. I didn’t and got a chemical burn. And that’s my story.

@@MirandaDetailing yeah. You mentioned the difference in the paints like the soft and hard paint on the different cars so how i know the difference is it a certain color that's softer than the others?
@@philippeprince115 Good question...you only know once you start polishing. I always go with least aggressive method first like a polish and compounding pad for a one-step and see how the paint responds. If the paint looks good and the swirls are almost gone, then the paint is most likely soft and will correct easily. If its harder, you will need to step it up to a compound and more aggressive pads. The more you polish you will notice how it responds.

Good question! I use my air compressor and blow the pads in between each panel. Then when they are pretty saturated with product I switch it out for a new pad. 😎👍🏼
Absolutely amazing video thank you for showing us beginners. I really appreciate your videos. This might be a really dumb question but I just want clarity. When the paint is so bad that you cant do a one step correction and you have to apply a compound and a polish. Do you do each panel completely then move on or do you compound the entire vehicle then come back and polish it all?
Thanks! Not a dumb question at all, I like to compound everything first because it can be really dusty to compound heavily, then I do a IPA wipe down and then polish. Depending on the protection I will be applying, I may do a very light IPA wipe down after polish also.

Nice and simple I love it. Is there ever a need to measure the thickness of the paint or clear coat somehow before you start to be sure you don’t burn through it?
Thanks. It’s a good idea to get an affordable paint depth gauge to at least determine how much paint you have to play with. But I always tread lightly and don’t go over board, so I never really have a problem compromising clear coat.
My friend is letting me learn to polish with his Rupes Mark 3 LHR 15. I have the hardest time keeping the polisher from stalling. It spins really slow or not at all majority of the time. I’ve tried different angles, different pressure, different speed and it doesn’t help much. Would you please give me some advice on what I’m doing wrong? Do I need a smaller DA polisher or is my technique just bad? Your help would be appreciated!
Hi. What backing plate do you have on it? When the machine is off does the backing plate spin freely? Or does it seem to be hitting the shroud of the polisher?
Miranda Detailing Sorry still new to polishing but it looks like the shroud is barely touching the BP. The backing plate will spin but not like other polishers where you can spin it and it will just keep spinning on its own. I have to keep turning it manually by hand to have it spin. The best way to put it is it spins kind of like the force rotation Mille where you manually have to turn it to have it spin. Hope you understand and hopefully I’m making sense. Lol
Ah yes I see what you mean. Look up Buffydaddy.com. He is a master at polishing and he learned how to make a washer to raise the backing plate off the shroud. It’s called the Washer MOD. (Modification). It will change the way it spins and it won’t stall.
I actually ordered a washer mod from buffdaddy.com like you said and I appreciate your help! I was wondering, I know it’s very expensive but is the washer mod a better choice or should I get the kamikaze 5 inch backing plate which makes the backing plate free spin as well? Was just wondering which you suggest? I’m willing to purchase the backing plate if you feel that is the better solution. Thanks again!
Awesome!! You can totally do it. It’s not as difficult as some people make it out to be. But good products, tools, tools and techniques will make a difference
Hi. Good question. It’s a tough one to answer without knowing how thick the clear coat is. But I’m always trying to preserve clear coat instead of compounding to point where every swirl and screech is removed. So just ball park average for a newer car with factory clearcoat I would go beyond 2 or 3 full paint corrections.
Is the griots orange pads similar to the orange lake country? I am taking too long to one step polish a Subaru found good polish and pad combo but keep going over deeper areas even though it’s just 1 step it’s only me working and I went though probably 12 pads for just the 4 front panels , I also only have 1 inch nano 3 inch griots machine and 6 inch flex Am I able to get by without 5 inch ? Also doing my first CSL application for customer that is not friend or family thanks for the help 🙏🏻 your videos are the best! Any ones on pad cleaning
They are very similar. Yeah that the challenge, you have to balance what youre charging and able to deliver without going overboard. Detailers have to let go of our ego sometimes and realize that customers don't see what we see. as long as you get it about 50% or so they will be happy. Of course you have to tell the the customer that's what a one step or enhancement is, that way they understand what they are paying for and what to expect.
Great video as I am a newbie to paint correction. I am working on my 2007 black HHR and tried the Meguiar's M105 and M205 which produced a lot of dusting. What is the difference between the M110 & 210 vs M105 & 205?
Hi. The new formula I feel has no dusting at all. The M110 cuts better and has a longer work time. The M210 is really nice! Long work time also and super easy wipe off.
Hi Phil I was hoping you would show how to apply that ceramic spray coating. Is that wolfgang the best ceramic coating you would recommend for beginners?
I have some videos coming that shows some applications of the Wolfgang spray coating. It’s super easy to use. It’s great to use as a beginner. Also Cquartz UK3.0 is also very easy to apply.
I have a brand new Blazer that unfortunately has some water spots on the black pillars between the windows,especially on the driver side. I have worked on 1 of them and it looks like I got rid of the minerals, but I can clearly see the shape of the water spots etched into the clear coat. I currently have a 8mm throw Harbor Freight DA with 6 inch Rupes yellow pads and Sonax perfect finish. I have went over it about 10-12 times with this combo and it doesn't seem to be changing. What would you suggest? I am new to polishing, so a little gunshy with the aggressive stuff and really don't want to spend the money on anything that isn't necessary. This area is pretty thin, about 3 inches. I think I would probably be better off buying a 3 inch backing plate for my polisher. When I have been taping off my rubber time I am covering the very edge of the paint so that I am not constantly polishing over a corner in the metal. I don't want to wear that area too thin and have a chance of burning through. I have considered paying someone to do it, but I know I could buy the items I need much cheaper. I have an old Trailblazer that I am not too worried about messing up that has a similar shaped area that I could practice on beforehand. Thanks
Hi. Those Waterspot etchings can be a challenge especially on those pillars. You can step it up to a slightly more aggressive polish or use the perfect finish with a microfiber disc and do a few passes then use the yellow foam to finish down. Water etching usually takes a microfiber disc to remover completely. Just time your time and do a few slow passes at a time and check your work. Let me know how it goes

Hi Phil, never used a Polisher before bought a Griots polisher have a white car very few flat surfaces, have meguiars ultimate compound n polish can I expect any kind of improvement don't know what my expectations should be.
Hi. Yeah That compound can do some great swirl removal and add gloss. It will take some time to try different combos and learn to handle the polisher, but practice and you will get it.
it really depends on how bad the paint is and if its soft or hard clear coat. usually it takes me one day to just wash, prep, and compound and then the next day to polish. so maybe 8-12 hours total.

Question. I realize M110 and M210 are considered the "Professional Line" how do these products compare to the "Consumer Line" which would be "Ultimate Compound" and "Ultimate Polish". Hi. Actually they are very close. I have used the ultimate line and it’s very user friendly. But the pro line stuff works faster and better in my findings.

I have tried Maguaris Ultimate Compound with a hex logic orange pad with my DA. It worked so so. Do you recommend continued use of the orange pad, step up to the M series products? You're Welcome....Well usually with white its more forgiving and you can usually get away with a more aggressive compound or pad. I have also had amazing success with 3D One and an orange pad, it cuts and finishes really well. amzn.to/3od2UCj

What paint depth gauge do you use? I’ve slowly been getting people who want me to detail their vehicles. When they ask me to do paint correction or enhancement and it’s used and they don’t know if it’s been corrected before I hesitate to do the work. What paint depth gauge do you suggest I buy?
I’m going to finally use my spta polisher. My van has similar paint defects as the car above. I have a few products compounds, wax and sealants. I just don’t know which pads to use?
Which ever pads are more dense and course those will be the compounding pads, the softer ones will be polishing/finishing. The wool is very heavy cutting

That’s great! You can totally use any pad with any compound or polish you choose at any time. There is no rule on that. I sometimes will use a compound with a polishing pad depending on the paint.

Hi. Good question. I use a few different types of drying aid/spray sealants. I like Gyeon Cure, Carpro Reload. I also use Automagic Hydroshine and Poly Magic.

They both prefor very well but M110 has way more cut and does leave a little marring behind. With D300 it leaves a little nicer finish. But it all depends on how soft or hard the paint is.

I am going to apply cquartz uk3.0 and I know the essence acts as a primer for the coating although it's not necessary. So which of the two polish should I go with? I know great results can be achieved with all mentioned products.
Kyle Fonrose I would go with Essence and a medium polishing pad like Lake Country White or something equally as good. It will removing marring and like you said lay a base foundation for the coating. You only need to do a very light wipe down with Eraser after that then coat it.

They are very similar. Yeah that the challenge, you have to balance what youre charging and able to deliver without going overboard. Detailers have to let go of our ego sometimes and realize that customers don't see what we see. as long as you get it about 50% or so they will be happy. Of course you have to tell the the customer that's what a one step or enhancement is, that way they understand what they are paying for and what to expect.

Great video as I am a newbie to paint correction. I am working on my 2007 black HHR and tried the Meguiar's M105 and M205 which produced a lot of dusting. What is the difference between the M110 & 210 vs M105 & 205?
Hi. The new formula I feel has no dusting at all. The M110 cuts better and has a longer work time. The M210 is really nice! Long work time also and super easy wipe off.

Thanks. I would get at least 4-5 of the same pads for compounding. 2-3 of the same pads for polishing.

I have some videos coming that shows some applications of the Wolfgang spray coating. It’s super easy to use. It’s great to use as a beginner. Also Cquartz UK3.0 is also very easy to apply.

Thanks...I would use a simple cleaner wax or light polish like Meg's M210, I also use 3D Speed with a microfiber applicator.
What are your thoughts on 3M brand Polishes?
Hi. I used to use them back in the day. But most of them are updated compounds and polishes that are not as effective on modern clearcoats.
I have a brand new Blazer that unfortunately has some water spots on the black pillars between the windows,especially on the driver side. I have worked on 1 of them and it looks like I got rid of the minerals, but I can clearly see the shape of the water spots etched into the clear coat.
I currently have a 8mm throw Harbor Freight DA with 6 inch Rupes yellow pads and Sonax perfect finish. I have went over it about 10-12 times with this combo and it doesn't seem to be changing.
What would you suggest? I am new to polishing, so a little gunshy with the aggressive stuff and really don't want to spend the money on anything that isn't necessary. This area is pretty thin, about 3 inches. I think I would probably be better off buying a 3 inch backing plate for my polisher. When I have been taping off my rubber time I am covering the very edge of the paint so that I am not constantly polishing over a corner in the metal. I don't want to wear that area too thin and have a chance of burning through.
I have considered paying someone to do it, but I know I could buy the items I need much cheaper. I have an old Trailblazer that I am not too worried about messing up that has a similar shaped area that I could practice on beforehand.

Hi. Those Waterspot etchings can be a challenge especially on those pillars. You can step it up to a slightly more aggressive polish or use the perfect finish with a microfiber disc and do a few passes then use the yellow foam to finish down. Water etching usually takes a microfiber disc to remover completely. Just time your time and do a few slow passes at a time and check your work. Let me know how it goes
Do you polish every part of the car when you detail or only certain areas?
We polish all painted surfaces.

Hi. Thanks. Yeah usually we like to compound everything first because it can make some dust. Then wipe down the vehicle and then finish polish everything.
Hi Phil, never used a Polisher before bought a Griots polisher have a white car very few flat surfaces, have meguiars ultimate compound n polish can I expect any kind of improvement don't know what my expectations should be.
Hi. Yeah That compound can do some great swirl removal and add gloss. It will take some time to try different combos and learn to handle the polisher, but practice and you will get it.

How long should it take an average weekend warrior to completely compound, polish and wax a normal sized car using a DA polisher?
it really depends on how bad the paint is and if its soft or hard clear coat. usually it takes me one day to just wash, prep, and compound and then the next day to polish. so maybe 8-12 hours total.

Question. I realize M110 and M210 are considered the "Professional Line" how do these products compare to the "Consumer Line" which would be "Ultimate Compound" and "Ultimate Polish". Would it be worth trying the Ultimate duo and see how the results are? Or skip them and go straight to the "Professional Series"? Thanks in advance 👍
Hi. Actually they are very close. I have used the ultimate line and it’s very user friendly. But the pro line stuff works faster and better in my findings.

It has the pure white color and well got it from the dealer with light swirls and water spots/etchings. I don't want to cut too deep in a new paint/clear as I live in an extremely hot climate and just want to keep as much clear as possible. I have tried Maguaris Ultimate Compound with a hex logic orange pad with my DA. It worked so so. Do you recommend continued use of the orange pad, step up to the M series products? Or get a microfiber cutting disc and use the Ultimate Compound first? Your thoughts? Thanks again for your time. 👍
You're Welcome....Well usually with white its more forgiving and you can usually get away with a more aggressive compound or pad. I have also had amazing success with 3D One and an orange pad, it cuts and finishes really well. amzn.to/3od2UCj

It’s possible, but you will find the pad will become ineffective if over used. We usually use at least 2-3 pads per vehicle.

You’re welcome! I would most likely use 2-3 pads for a one step and 4-6 or more for a 2-3 step correction.

Which ever pads are more dense and course those will be the compounding pads, the softer ones will be polishing/finishing. The wool is very heavy cutting

I’m just starting to learn how to polish and do paint correction. If I use a med cutting pad with compound and another time I choose to use the same pad with a polish, is that okay as long as I clean the pad? Or once I use a compound or polish on a pad that’s all I can use that pad for after that?
That’s great! You can totally use any pad with any compound or polish you choose at any time. There is no rule on that. I sometimes will use a compound with a polishing pad depending on the paint.

Hi. Good question. I use a few different types of drying aid/spray sealants. I like Gyeon Cure, Carpro Reload. I also use Automagic Hydroshine and Poly Magic.

If it’s cured properly yes. Ceramic coatings can be applied to almost anything.

Hi Phil..Hope all is well ?! I want to polish my B-Pilars as well as the rest of the trimming which is basically in the same material. Which pad (foam or microfiber) (5" and 1" or very small one) combination of polish would you recommend to do this job ? I once saw you and Brian from APEX saying that URO-FIBER + 3D ONE was a great combo ? Correct ?

They can be a pain to finish out, I would use a microfiber or uro fiber pad to finish on them, you can compound with them but they need softer foams to finish out.

How does the M110 with a MFC pad compare to D300with a MFC pad? Which might be better?
They both prefor very well but M110 has way more cut and does leave a little marring behind. With D300 it leaves a little nicer finish. But it all depends on how soft or hard the paint is.

@@MirandaDetailing oh I just remembered, so after cutting with D300 would following with carpro essence polish be fine or I should follow with m210? I am going to apply cquartz uk3.0 and I know the essence acts as a primer for the coating although it's not necessary. So which of the two polish should I go with? I know great results can be achieved with all mentioned products.
Kyle Fonrose I would go with Essence and a medium polishing pad like Lake Country White or something equally as good. It will removing marring and like you said lay a base foundation for the coating. You only need to do a very light wipe down with Eraser after that then coat it.
