    I was real anxious at the thought of attempting this on the '89 GT convertible I just got, but this video was so well laid out and explained, I'm excited to actually go out and do it! I'm going to start shopping for the proper tools ASAP!

      You can do it! Mark harmonic balancer at 10 degrees BTDC with a white or yellow marker. Pull spout connector out and set timing. Good luck

    Mr. Palmer just wanted to say thanks! I came across this vid and picked up the same innova timing light and set my timing on my 88 lx 5.0 today! Shes running like a top now! Before I had no acceleration and hesitation. Your 1 wire alternator vid also helped me out over the winter. I got the same summit alt and installed. You're vids are great!!! Thanks again.

    Stock from the factory is 10 degrees but an easy free HP mod is to bump the initial timing to 12-14 degrees BTC. Mine is running at 14 at the moment and it seems to love it.

    You can also mark the harmonic at Zero and set the gun at 10 degrees to check it

    • @djdev3077
      @djdev3077 3 года назад

      That my question is the gun set at 10 to get 10 on the harmonic balancer or is it set a 0 to get the 10 to line up

    • @sweetassugar2076
      @sweetassugar2076 3 года назад

      @@djdev3077 if the gun is set on 10 degrees then the mark on the balancer should be right on zero . If the gun is set on zero the the mark on the balancer should be right on 10 degrees!

    A stock Fox body motor loves 12-13 initial. If you have traditional aluminium heads you can go to 14-17 initial. I Just put some TFS 11r 190s in. These heads like LESS timing than stock. I went from 10 degrees initial to 9 initial and made more power.

      Bottom gear on distributor turned. Mines was to closer to the left before I changed it, then when installed new distributor mines almost same position as his now from sitting it in.

    Great video, might wanna tell the viewers because you dont have your A/C anymore its piece of cake to loosen the distributor bolt,when all that stuff is in the way a distributor wrench is almost mandatory (specially if someone else tightened the heck out of the bolt), on another note not sure how you got away with having that fan with that alternator, my god those stock alternators are incredible weak,i have 2 of these cars,my 91 since new,one of the first things i did was slap a 160 amp alt on it,i installed it the correct way with the big wire and the fuse inline, big difference in the charging department,i got the alternator from a V6 mustang at the wrecking yard,heck of a deal.

    Hey Mr. Palmer, its Mr. Palmer. I thought you cut the car off and then install the plug. Is that not correct? Just curious because I rebuilt my motor with an E303 Camshaft, new pistons, rings, beatings and ive got a strange knock or pre detonation. About to do the timing gun tomorrow from your instructions. Hope you or someone else can respond relatively quick. Thanks!

      KP - great to hear your built that engine yourself. That E303 cam is a very good choice. They sound amazing. I'm running a Trick Flow cam (Track Max) Stock timing is 10 BTDC. With that cam it might like 12 BTDC better, give it a try!

I had em torqued to 25ft pounds and bumped it down to 20 ft pounds. Was thinking the rockers were too tight. Think this will fix my knock?

    I set it exactly the way you do it in the video but when I reinstall the spout connector it jumps up a few degrees. If I pull the spout out, it sits exactly where I set it. Why does this happen? Is it normal?

    • @nunya2814

      Yes it is normal, spout connector unplugged allows you to set base timing, plug it back in and the computer takes back over

    What belt did you use to bypass the ac and smog and did you get the power steering relocate bracket and move it up to where the ac was ? I have already gotten rid of the smog and has a pulley but it’s broke and walks the belt to the back and the previous owner took out the ac stuff so want to remove the pump sell it maybe for $25 if anyone might be interested but been fighting to find a belt and read conflicting info on if any belt will work and if the P/S needs to be moved up etc

    • @88MustangGT
      @88MustangGT  2 года назад

      .Pop open the hood of your car. Make sure you have engaged the parking brake and that the vehicle is off.
      Step 2
      Locate the path of your serpentine belt. If you are unsure the of the path, look under your hood for a diagram or in your owner's manual. Follow the path with the piece of string.
      Step 3
      With the string tightly wrapped around the correct path of the serpentine belt according to the diagram in your owner's manual, mark the area on the string with a marker where it completely wraps around.
      Measure the length of string it took to wrap around the path of the serpentine belt. Purchase a belt one size smaller than the size you measured. The actual belt will have tension on it, whereas the string doesn't. For example, if you measured 80 inches, purchase a belt that is 79 1/2 inches.

    What cam is in your car? I have an E303 with 2200-2400 stall converter and it has surging / stalling issues. Had to bump idle up to around 950-1k just to keep it running without stalling. Was wondering if timing was too low but it looks to be about 12-14
