- Time travel back to a snowy winter day in the Netherlands in 1927. Young people skiing and tobogganing in deep snow. Colorized and ai upscaled to 4k at 60fps.
Snow days are a rare thing now with a warming climate. In the 1920s, it meant a town or even a city as large as New York, regularly declaring official holidays for both kids and adults alike.
In the 1920s, a typical snow day would be a blend of leisure and outdoor activities that still reflected an era that was fast disappearing. People often engaged in snowball fun, skiing, sledding or tobogganing. If there was a frozen lake nearby, whole communities would descend on it for a spot of ice skating. And who could resist building a snowman?
The beauty of untouched snow and the crisp winter air provided a perfect backdrop for these activities. On cold winter nights, with television still to be invented, and radio in its infancy, families and friends gathered around fireplaces, sharing stories and hot beverages.
Activewear in the 1920s
The 1920s was also marked by a distinctive winter style. The era of 'activewear' had yet to evolve, so people made the best of looking stylish in the cold winter months.
Women donned wool winter coats, often lined with elegant fur collars and cuffs. These coats were frequently accompanied by cloche hats, fur stoles and long, knitted scarves.
Men's fashion included heavy woolen overcoats, often in dark colors, paired with fedoras or flat caps. They also wore plus-four trousers and sturdy leather boots to navigate the snowy streets.
Both men and women's fashion during this time beautifully blended form and function, ensuring warmth and style even in the coldest of winters.

1927 was a bit early for sounds in "home movies". It seems the first home movie with sound would have been around 1929. It seems then that sound was added during the restoration.

This is an extraordinary project. To look at this normalised imagery of people from 1927? To see how 'ordinary' and 'modern' they look is strange. The black and white footage always makes things look unreal and presents a reality barrier. The freshness of waving people from a century ago who look like us today is a challenge to out perceptions of 'history'. How we haven't actually changed. Thanks for your work. ; ) K

@@errezmardi506it's still nearly 100 years ago, it's just interesting to see the people so clearly when we are used to seeing lesser quality footage from that era. Original footage from back then often has the effect of distancing us from the people depicted and making them appear alien and unrelatable because of the way it looks. This restored footage helps with that.

This reminds me of my childhood where we did the exact same thing. Sledding and skiing down a hill at home in the country. Except I did it in the 1970s with plastic toboggans and wooden skis. We even had a pond that we would go ice skating on. Some things just stand the test of time and this is one of them. This was a jaw dropping restoration. Looks like it was shot yesterday.

Don't exaggerate, they have the great depression and WW2 in their future. Each period of time had it's good stuff and extremely bad stuff, they went through very tough times.

@@leea2112 It's not rude, it's a fact. The next 20 years were horrible in human history. I guess history isn't your strong suit or you would know this. The people of that generation had a much bigger struggle than we do now. If you lost your job, there were little to nothing to help you get back on your feet, if you got sick, many of today's medicine didn't exist to heal you. People died younger, poverty was much more rampant especially a decade after this video was shot. WW2 was probably not a fun time either especially if this is a European family as they would most likely be affected by it.
@@filb excuse me but my grandad and uncle were killed in the 2nd world war heroes the were so I know what pain and suffering means to my family so history is my strong point I watched my grandmother pine over my grandfather who I never had the pleasure of meeting nor my uncle so we lived like many people who lost in 2nd world war!! Its unbelievable that theres always people like you that's never lived through pain to criticize others !!
And my grandmother brought up three girls one was my mother alone and worked 3 jobs no benefits then !! The roaring 20s were a great time for my grandmother and auntie as they met there husbands then !!

Very nice Footage. I´m impressed of the girl - she´s in an good mood and laughes nice. But I´m wondered about her skirt. This looks like a miniskirt - I thought that´s fashion of the 1960´s or 1970`s.....
