- This week, we take you to the Corinth Canal, the world’s deepest man-made waterway in Greece with walls soaring 79m tall and some areas as narrow as only 25m wide.
Engineering geologist, Haris Saraglou, inspects the canal to ensure it is stable for large ships like this 195m long cruise ship, the largest ship to ever attempt to cross the canal. Our unique aerial view allows us to witness this magnificent moment like you’ve never seen it before.
In this episode of Europe From Above season 2, aerial photography reveals the secrets of Greece, set in a vast landscape where myth and legend collide with the modern world. Flying cameras soar over Mount Olympus, the home of the gods, over daring projects to clear ocean waste and through the deepest canal in the world. We reveal a new perspective of world-famous icons, such as the Parthenon in Athens and the Tholos of Epidaurus, an ancient building with an underground secret. Ah, this video brings to mind one of the most interesting experiences of my year-long ramble of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. When I boarded a bus in Patras that was bound for Athens, I made sure the conductor saw that my ticket had me getting off in Corinth. I must have been the only passenger getting off there, and he seemed to have forgotten about me.
I was beginning to wonder why I'd not reached Corinth, when the conductor came up to me, gesturing for my ticket. When he saw the destination, he yelled at the driver, who whipped into the parking lot of a small supermarket. The conductor shoved me out and I had to run alongside the bus to get it to stop again, so I could get my pack from underneath.
"Where was I?," I wondered. Seeing a bridge, I walked out on it and discovered it spanned what this video is about, the Corinth Canal. I'd been dumped off at the only recognizable place on my entire trip. At least I wasn't lost.
It was late at night, but I was prepared for anything. I walked up a side road a couple of hundred yards, found a field, and set up my tent. The next day dawned raining, so I stayed in the tent reading all day. The next day I hitched back to Corinth to see the ancient city.
damn that is crazy, are you not scared?
wonderful !!
You should have mention the Diolkos trackway that was used in Ancient Greece to pass ships from one side to another (seventh century BC or something like that). The canal is at the exact location and there is a site you can visit on the western entrance ,where you can see a part of the paved "road" that has been excavated.
And here we have evergiven stuck in such a wide canal .

Those captains have balls of steel. If I'm not mistaken, insurance doesn't pay if the ship gets damaged in the canal. One of few places around the world where ship insurance needs a special insurance for that specific area.

It took me 2mins to understand cause i saw captions instead of captains
The cruise ship is getting a tow with it's engines seemingly off or on idle as there was no wake. NG makes everything more dramatic than usual.
Could be worse. Could be sailing the Gulf of Aden. Similia pirates to the south coast and Yemeni revolutionary combatants to the north coast. International ships can be attacked from both sides of the Aden Gulf.
@@vipahman The tug is guiding it through, but it looks like the ship is providing some thrust. Just because the tug is guiding it doesn't make it any less of a tight fit.
It is annoying the way shows feel the need to overdramatize everything.
I remember going through this canal in 1970 whilst on a cruise. I remember the engines hardly powered up whilst a little tug boat pulled us through.
An absolutely amazing experience I will never forget. We passed through the first time at night which made it even more dramatic.
Same experience for me 👍 I remember going through the canal in 1976 when 14yrs old on the cruise ship "TSS Fiorita" when my aunties Josie Fury and Ena Thomas took me on a Greek cruise, memories of a lifetime, i will never forget it. From Martin, UK. 🦅⚪✴️
Every time we drive through the highway over the canal, going to Athens from Patras, we always look to our right to see the canal! The breathtaking view never gets old!
How lucky you are
I love you greece
Over the years I've traveled over the canal many times while visiting Greece. The cafeterias near the canal were a standard stop for intercity buses before the new highway was built.
I live 150 m away. One of Greece's foremost sunsets! At nights, it resembles to a liquid, Dark Avenue.Under the moonlight, waters remain blue. A sacred place, as well -on it's right and left, ruins of ancient temples. Every night I stop for a few moments to feel the unearthly chill of its eternal energy. You must feel it, you must.
Is that safe to get close to the cliff? Sounds stupid, but I just curious ist that solid and stable? It's a rock, but with something on the top, hard to judge. Anyway the clif, incredibly "flat". Amazing.
@@netuserist no it is not.the height is getting gradually high so you just avoid taking any risks. At begining and it's ending it is just flat and ideal for fishing experiences. Lots of octopuses and eels and cuttlefish in just 50 cm sea water and amazing beaches on left and right sides of the corinthian entrance one with half sand in the sea bed and one with peebles.

Wouldn't you start this video with the map?
Where is this? That's the most important thing amd it's missing.
But its called the Corinth Canal and he said near Greece. That kind of narrows it down
Corinth, when you look at the map of Greece you can see the Central Greece, the part that directly connects to the Balkans, then there is thin strip of land that connects it to the peninsula of Peloponnese. Corinth and the canal are right in the middle of that thin strip of land, right between Central Greece and the Peloponnese.

This canal is located in the city of Corinth where apostle Paul travelled and wrote two major letters in the Bible to the church of Corinth.
Paul the devil
No, the canal is not “in the city of Corinth”, it’s outside it. Paul and his letters have nothing to do with the canal. Stay focused, this documentary is about the canal, not about your beliefs.
@@gregoryemmanuel9168
I am staying focused. The canal is literally called "Corinth canal", which is the same city where Apostle Paul had a church and wrote two major letter in the New Testament. This is a interesting fact, that this city is still there 2000 years later.
@@gregoryemmanuel9168Stfu
As he mentioned, we Greeks wanted this canal for a long time. But since we knew it was an enormous task, we invented Diolkos (portage machine) instead. A kind of rails for ships to be moved over land. I'm talking about 600 BCE. The Diolkos combined the two principles of the railway and the overland transport of ships, on a scale that remained unique in antiquity.
The Roman Emperor Nero tried again, way later, after Rome conquered Greece.
Was it really worth to pass through such a narrow canal for 195m long luxury cruise.....any damage could have cost millions

Fun fact; *canals* were once known as the "anus' of the seas" due to their vital importance of moving cargo from one sea to another through a narrow, tight passage... Europeans disliked the vulgar nature of the phrase "anus' of the seas" and changed their name to Lolligagers, which didn't catch on, but a few hundred years later CANAL (Sea anal) caught on as an homage to the original name and we've used it ever since.
Now you know!

Corinth Canal. If you are a Christian, the town should be familiar to you by the Bible-it was eternally marked to world history by Apostle Paul s Letters to Corinthians.
Largest Ship to attempt this 'tight squeeze'
Ever Given: Hold my life boat
The longest & deepest canal/s in the world.
Corinth canal (6,2 km). On the bridge, you have also a shop to practice bungee jumping (I paid 50 euros in early 00's), if you are brave enough.
Panama canal (66, 8 km)
Suez canal (Egypt) (150 km)
Avrasya canal, Istambul (34, 4 km)
???
Does anyone else knows any other canal across the globe (with wide 30m top and altitude near 90m). However, I am not quite sure, which the policy of each shipping company (when the deal with local laws in countries where there is such small canals to cross!)
I don't wish for my self, to be in captain position when needs to cross some canal 30 meters wide (150 metre/length & 80 altitude cruise ship). Worry about his credit card or dept card!
Should have shown a map to show the layout and position!!!
Hats off to the nerve of the skipper
in holland we would have made Huge locks instead of digging 80 to 100 m deep
holland is so sandy that you hear the word "rock" and you think it refers to the music. so, if you will ever find land 70 meters high, you can dig a canal like this with 3 plastic spoons in one month. LOL
