Shiny hunting the Magikarp in the Pokemon Center always seemed funny to me. Man's trying to scam you, yet gives you something ludicrously and blatantly rare for a couple of bucks.
Honest even in Universe the magikarp salesman prices are fairly reasonable considering poke balls are 2 bucks and fishing rods are expensive in real life.
A note if you don't know already: Hatched Pokémon start with 120 happiness out of 220. That's how I got a Crobat at lvl 23 in Sun the other day. Much easier to do it that way, even if Chansey Eggs take a notoriously long time to hatch.
I’m reaching out to see if anyone would be up for this weird challenge! In Gen 1, you can catch Pokémon via fishing in Elite four Lorelei’s room. (Magikarp, Poliwag, and Goldeen). This was due to an oversight. Can you beat the Elite 4 using them? This is the framework, you create the rest!
Well not directly after fishing them up seeing as the magikarp will be level 5 and the Goldeen and Poliwag will be level 10, and max amount of rare candies you can get is 12 without cerulean cave. I don’t think a level 17 magikarp or level 22 poliwag or goldeen is going to solo the E4.
Going to say yes it is possible, though very tedious, without leaving Lorelei's room. Bring in a single pokemon to use to catch the first, catch as many others as you want, fish to grind enough levels that you can beat the E4, add TMs/HMs as needed. Edit to add: perhaps less straightforward, you would also want to brong a considerable stock of extra healing items and pokeballs to account for the inevitable struggle gronding. Hmm. Actual layers to the problem. Fair enough.
@@mkr4646 Exactly. That's what the healing supplies and pokeballs are for. You catch your pokemon, then you catch another. Keep fishing to switch train the first until the second is out of PP, then catch another. The healing items are to get through the struggle grond phase. Possibly bring a bunch of purchased TMs to further extend the potential of your grond session for your E4 soloing pokemon, and switch training your chosen mon because you would want to get through, at minimum, Lorelei and Bruno with the capability of having PP for Agatha.
@@mutevampire thank you for saying that! I was also thinking similar things. Didn’t want my comment to be too wordy at the time though haha. Glad someone else shared the same ideas with me hahahaha
Ive always thought these professor oaks challenges would be way more fun if you used nuzlocke level caps, meaning catch and evolve everything possible before each badge but not having to grind a pidgey to level 36 on a bunch of level 3 caterpie. You still eventually catch and evolve everything but save some headache of hours of mindless grinding.
I'm 31 years old & currently playing my Fire-red version over again (normal save file), I just beat the elite four; caught 110 pokemon for my pokedex before becoming champion; 66:19:21 in-game time; and even went to great lengths of nature hunting during my traveling but with all that, I still haven't seen a single shiny whatsoever... ik this particular playthrough is "not a regular cartridge", but watching how little amount of resets needed for your encounters to be successful is definitely making me quite jealous (though also happy for you too). Congratulations, but I'm very frustrated with my lack of shiny odds luck...
There is an Italian guy doing a shiny Living dex on fire red the regular way. He has been doing that for more than 1 year at least 6 hours a day and got 110/151😢
Why the hell are people so butthurt about RNG manipulation? You're not cheating: it's just the same thing as getting ludicrously lucky. These are all legitimately obtained, and saves you ripping your hair out or finishing the challenge in 10 years. By all means it's 100% okay and i don't understand the comments throwing a fit over the "integrity of the run".
Its a different kind of challenge, hes basically got to do everything in a particular order. Takes planning and effort, yeah. But johnstone did one of these with no rng manipulation and it feels a bit more of an accomplishment. Did take him like 2 years though

I get it. I'm doing my own hunting in firered and leafgreen at full odds and although it's kinda discouraging seeing stuff, (especially that part where he called full odds hunting a waste of time), like this just know that full odds shinies are still special and appreciated by the larger shiny hunting community
Don't do something because you hope other people will find it impressive. Do it because you want to, and think it would be fun. There are countless ways to increase the speed of finding shinies. You can have 8 GameBoys going at the same time. You can play on multiple emulators on a PC, and use 1000% speed up. You can use glitches to turn Pokemon shiny. You can just edit them into your game, or copy other people's shinies with your OT with PkHex. You can get them traded to you by internet enabled Trade Bots on Switch. You can plug in a GameShark\Action Replay and use a button combo to force encounters to be shiny. As far as Shiny Hunting methods go, RNG manipulation is one of the least invasive. For me, its actually MORE fun than traditional hunting. It's a technical process, that requires skill and game knowledge, instead of luck. Its a fun puzzle to solve. I have access to all the methods described above, but I choose the timer and the beeps every time.
Only shiny pokes I’ve ever encountered was a Spinda in Ruby, getting soot, saw a green variant, I had no clue what it was, I just assumed it was rare and caught it. Spindas or whatever it’s called has different spots on each one so it wasn’t that special for me. Second was a green Dratini in the safari zone which fled on fire red. Was spot fishing for a dratini and refused to stop after seeing the green one not knowing its 1/15633885432786.e6 chance. Nothing I could really do differently other than watch it flee 😅
I’ve done several play throughs no repels. Played two saves of emerald and almost fully completed both with almost all items, trades and a few cheats to obtain unobtainable ones. I also cheated pkrus into one emerald play through for nuttiness. I’ve got it twice in play throughs randomly, on firered{im pretty sure, could have been Ruby} and Pearl. But I’ve played multiple different complete play throughs of a lot of games and almost never ran into one.
Was there a reason that a couple of evo lines weren’t included in video? Unless I missed them, I didn’t see the Krabby, Staryu, and Gastly line 🤔 Edit: I see they were in the box towards the end of the video, just curious why they weren’t included in the rundown.
Honestly I don't care too much either way, but I do get a sense of accomplishment learning these processes and timing my input to human perfection considering our reaction time should not be fast enough for this. Regular hunting just seems like a waste of time and after having done that in both Gens 1/2, I think I'm justified in saying so.
I am curious to know the math on it because I am too lazy to figure it out myself but as a kid I thought for whatever reason a given save file only had one shined to get (from the moment you created a new save that save file had one shiny somewhere but that was the only shiny to get) my first game was a a hand me down emerald with a dead battery that I had caught a shiny zubat in a year or two prior but I very vividly remember a time when in a save I was in victory road, I encountered a shiner loured I did not have any poke balls but thinking this was my only possible shiny I shut my gba off not a soft reset. I then turned it back on just to encounter the exact same shiny loured on the exact same tile. I was like 7 so I had no clue what prng was or how shinies work but what would the probability be of back to back exactl same inputs at the exact same time be?
