    This is a very well made video. Thank you. I'm on my second Boxer and this time around trying to do most of my own maintenance. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to do these simple procedures!

    Great video for checking valve clearances on the new wetheads, but would love to see it include actually adjusting the valves as well.

    Great video sir! Thank you. Real quick, My '12 R1200GSA is hitting only on the left cylinder. I was cruising home on the highway and the rt. cylinder just dropped out. Plugs are good and I swapped uppers with lowers and right to left and confirmed they all spark while cranking as held to the frame. I bought two new primary coils and installed them with no change and even swapped in the event I got a bad brand new part. I do have an O2 sensor #1 code (271A) that comes up in Moto Scan so I removed them both, cleaned them and swapped them and the same code returned. I swapped lower coils, though they didn't fit I still got them connected and snapped in with no change. I confirmed both injectors spray fuel in a good pattern while cranking the bike but bought a new one for the right side anyway and installed in to no avail. The throttle body valve does turn with throttle twist as I could feel it with my fingers. The bike will fire up on just the left cylinder but the right cylinder, with spark and fuel does not want to fire! Thanks for reading so far sir, and if you would please let me know what else I could try I would greatly appreciate it sir. TY

    You can also use a flat edge ruler across the flats on end of both cams... same as your TDC check with straw.. nice job

    According to the RSD, the correct procedure for removing the connector is to move it away from the locking tab. I push the connector in slightly with a screwdriver in one hand and pull out with the other.

    It should be made clear,it is not sufficient just to have the piston at the top of it's travel.The piston must be at the top of it's travel,on compression stroke,then the engine is at TDC.The camshaft will then be at the correct position to measure the valve clearances.

    • @stephenmcqueen4029
      @stephenmcqueen4029 4 года назад

      Brian Smith doesn’t matter. if the cam lobes not pressing the valve shim then you measure the clearance. If you need to take a cam out then use the marks to line up tdc

    Great video, thank you for sharing. Is there a reason the bike needs to be in 6th gear when you perform the valve clearance check? That was the only part I didn't understand.

      It's easier to rotate the rear wheel in order to set the pistons at top dead center (TDC).

    great video, as a matter of fact, the only descent one I've found. FAQ: I've got the same bike with 12k miles and when I went to the dealer they told me that mi bike has self-regulated valves, that the valve-check should proceed only after a lot more miles (did't specify how many). How many miles has yours? any comments or advises?? Thanks for taking the time for all that need to learn the "how to". Take care

    I have all of the BMW "Special" tools for this bike, the TDC tool is worth the investment, additionally, the cam timing should also be checked. BMW has a tool for that as well, which is very simple to use. I found that on on my 2014 GS, one of the cam's was slightly off, and had to adjust it. Don't forget the Cam Timing Chain Tensioner tool. In all tools will run about 300 bucks or so, but well worth it since the bikes will last a very long time, as well as consideration for taking it to the dealership for the service. I'm not associated with this person, but there's images of him using the Cam timing and Cam chain tensioner tools on the wethead:

      Brian, I'm on a 2014GS also, runs a little rough at idle, after it's warmed up. First 20 minutes at idle, it purrs just fine. I head out on the road and about 5 miles in, if I stop, it jumps ever so slightly between 1100-1300 rpms, and a small pop comes from the right cylinder maybe once every 40 seconds. Cams? Did you notice anything prior to finding the Cam being off? Thanx.
