Streisand doing "Stoney End" is a rare marriage of a damned good singer and a damned good songwriter. It seldom happens, but when it does, you know it. "Barbra sounds amazing... who wrote this?" Or, "STREISAND recorded a Laura Nyro song? Wow." Yeah, "wow" about sums it up. This initially hit in '69, my favorite year for singles. I've covered it live. I think if you can, you should. THAT'S how much I like it.
The awesome Laura Nyro! Blood, Sweat and Tears recorded "And When I Die" and The 5th Dimension sang "Sweet Blindness", two more of my favorite Laura Nyro songs besides "Stoney End".
I have loved this tune for about 37 years & never knew any of this. Thank you for your informative insight into Laura Nyro & the lyrics which all make sense now.
Addictive. I simply can't stop coming back to this about every 1-2 months. And then it will be in my ear for weeks. Why? It's brilliant on every point.
You are a genuis for doing this, AWESOME! I love both the Laura Nyro and this they both are very different and great. I was ten when this sone came out and loved it even as a 10 year old boy!
I always said that as well, even though I was quite young when this came out (elementary school) to be exact. I would always be so sad when the song ended and wondered why it was so short.. But fast forward to now and here we are with a fantastic extended version. It was a long time coming but the musical Gods granted our wish. Peace and love.🎶🎶🎶
All the songs back then were short because they had to fit on the length of a 45 rpm record before it ran out of length on the turntable AND because the AM radio back then would usually only accommodate no more than 3 minutes per song.
The vocals here are really clear , moreso than the original radio version. Streisand was at the peak of her vocal prowess when this amazing record was made ...obviously!
What brings tears to my eyes about this song is quite different from Peteboy's experience (sorry for your loss, man). Everybody has a series of "D-OH!" moments, when you have something that hits you like a bolt of pure lightning, when you suddenly realize exactly who it is you are. I remember the wild, joyful abandon I felt the first time I danced around my room to this single, lip-synching like a crazy person. Guess you know what THAT means, right? LOL
Adore this track.I'm not one of those mad stalker-type Streisand fans, coz lets face it,she HAS churned out some cr*ap in her time. But importantly she HAS remained at the top of her game for decades, and I just can't think of one 'star' of today who'll be able to have that acolade,EVER! I 1st heard of her back in 1973,when I was 13,and here I am,37 years later, still proud to call myslef a true fan of this fantastic voice! Brabra Streisand, and other musical instruments! Says it all!
Wow. That is one heck of a remix. You should send it to her record company and show them what you can do. A lot of her fans (me included) would gladly pay for a CD remix of some of her hits ! Keep it up. 5 Stars !
Wikipedia has a great page about this recording and lists every single musician and back-up singer. They were some of the best at the time and the three singers are still workin today, I am happy to say! And that is Randy Newman on piano.
The only disappointment is that Babs stated she doesn't even like this song. I remember seeing a live performance vid and she took questions from the audience that submitted then on cards and a fan requested her to sing it. She confessed she doesnt care for it, hasnt sang it in decades and wonders why others do so much. She finally complied tho and gave it a shot, just a few lines, mixed up a few lyrics. Atleast her band was a on their game and were ready even then it wasnt on the setlist. Sometimes it's best NOT to really know what your idols really think and disappoint.
Your name is “Winsome Johnny,” a nod to Laura’s original version. Am I right? I ask because I’ve become kinda obsessed with Nyro having just discovered her. I’m wondering why the lyrics changed.
Wow Mudhens!..I'M VERY IMPRESSED you caught that! LOL!! I'm also a fan of Laura Nyro (obviously) I discovered her late in life, not realizing I've been grooving to her songs for decades but NOT realizing she was genius composer of all of those timeless classic hits. I can only guess the change in lyrics was an artist preference thing. Winsome Johnny is an old timey term, Stoney End was considered a radical new hip sound for Striesand. Before she went full Disco later.
oh my GUARD i LVOE this particular version of this song... the intro is spectacular, love it in repeat just like this... the bass is smartly funky OOHhh... tomtomclubmix, I enjoyed the way you very musically cut this. I really liked the SHORT Barbara pipsqueaks as she's ready to hit the high note on "momma" between 4:45 - 5:12 , how you put in a shorted 1st syllable each time... SNAZZY !! Kudos.
...when she covered Laura Nyro songs like this one? Babs covered 3 Laura Nyro songs on her 1971 LP 'Stoney End'. This one got to #6 on Billboard. See Sara Barellies cover this song at Nyro's induction into the Rock Hall of Fame 2012.
I know Perry Botkin arranged this piece. He was a popular arranger at the time. I think that's Eric Weisburg ( half of "Duelin' Banjos") on guitar and Max Bennett on bass.
@peteboy1113 I know how you feel, Growing up in Brooklyn NY I had a friend Kevin who got hit by a car when we were both 11. It was the first time death affecting me personally. I still think of him as 11 and when we met some day, I'll be an old lady and Kevin will be 11.
Laura Nyro wrote this song. about her struggle with Lesbianism. She married but her marriage disolved.. her conflicting feelings and passions raged inside her soul.. She was very cose to her mother,.. when faced with this dilemma she wanted to feel secure in her mothers arms again and start all over again.. She ws a good person she ws born frm love, and raised on the good book Jesus..She did not want to go down the stoney end. In Biblical times women were stoned when they did not conform
This is a cover of a Laura Nyro song. Its a great pop version but the Laura original has more soul as Babbs had no clue what the song was about. Check out also the alternative lyrics version on here by Nyro.
The Ross version was not released for a reason. It was such a tepid interpretation which Diana Ross HATED !!! It was later used on a compilation album (which Diana Ross had no rights to anymore) and fought, unsuccessfully, to not have it released.
One of the BEST recordings EVER bar none!!!
I absolutely love this song! It makes me want to dance sixties style and this extended version let’s me look sillier longer 😸
Songs like "Stoney End" made dancing 'mandatory'. I still remember the 1960's, there sure were a lot more people dancing during that decade.
Listening in July 2024!!! Love 💕 this extended version with extra instrumental breaks. One of my favorite Babs songs! So going 👍🏻👍🏻❤❤❤
This song needs a Grammy!!!! Needs an Oscar!!!!! Whatever, this song is a pure gem!!!!!!!!!
Never get tired of listening. It cheers me up.
Eduardo Lee ..Really? Do you know what this song is about?..Yes it's an amazing song in melody and story telling tho
The lyrics are actually quite dark and despairing. Sounds like the Stoney End is the ultimate end.The melody, however is very upbeat and jaunty.
If it makes you happy that is all that matters, that is what music is about.
What a fabulous song by Barbara Streisand. Love it!

Pamela Drake THE ONE AND ONLY LAURA NYRO!
@@elisamandes4019 A GENIUS. Passed away at only 49
The awesome Laura Nyro!

It was released at the end of 1970.

Absolutely ADORE her! Most beautiful voice in the world! No one compares. Period.
Streisand has a beautiful voice 😍❤💜!!!!
Excellent bit of editing. A good song, a great performance re-edited into something new and wonderful.
My favorite Streisand song!!!
Mine too actually.
Mine as well. This is the so ng that introduced me to this wonderful, gifted woman. I was 11 years old.
This 'soulful' performance by Barbra Streisand of a Laura Nyro masterpiece makes wonderful memories of the first time I heard it on the radio.
Mine too I never get tired of listening to this gem of a song.
thanks for this, it is one of her fresher ones that remains as listenable as the day it was recorded.
WDJO in Cincinnati Ohio still plays this in their rotation to this day! Check it out. WDJO AM 1480 or FM 107.9! Also streaming.
Cincinnati is blessed by great music. I only wish the rest of the country played music like this. I have to go to RUclips to hear it.
You are a genuis for doing this, AWESOME! I love both the Laura Nyro and this they both are very different and great. I was ten when this sone came out and loved it even as a 10 year old boy!
Love this song one of my favoites!
Pure NYC talent on display!
gotta love those backup singers, the fabulous babettes.
Love Barbra, love this song... Love...Love...Love!! Brasil 27/12/20!
This song has come from obscurity and has turned into a real classic for Babs
the original song was so short I like this extended remix it is a nice change from the original WELL DONE

Thank you for this.
Her best song,
FYI the late great Hal Blaine on drums.
This is GREAT by ALL means
Excellence
Thankyou for that joeo I always wondered what the lyrics were about.
Every time I hear her hit that note at 2:27 I get a thrill.
I was never a huge fan, but for a few minutes in 1971 she was wonderful.

I've never bought any of Barbra Streisand's recordings either. But I really like listening to "Stoney End"!
Thanks for the info Joe! How could a gay
Streisand fan AND Laura Nyro fan not know this?!! I'm humbled but enlightened
and love this tasteful edit.
Very interesting. Thanks.
@terrryc I totally gree with ya !!
Yes, Laura Nyro wrote it.
"How To Write A Pop Song 101"

Please check out the performance of this song by Sara Bareilles at the induction of Laura Nyro into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
Penny Lipton of the mpd squad.
Married to Quincy Jones. recorded this first before Barbara
Only performed live twice.
Sing it barbra
and that's how it's done.
I'd like to see Kate Upton do her famous bikini dance to THIS song!
When is the fucking song ever going to start. Holy shit! I went to another RUclips video.
right!!!
Barbara's remake ..a great one..of Peggy Lipton..of Mod Squad ..original recording !
I know Perry Botkin arranged this piece. He was a popular arranger at the time.
I think that's Eric Weisburg ( half of "Duelin' Banjos") on guitar and Max Bennett on bass.
do you know who played drums on this cut?
When she hits that high note at the end...pure soul...!!!Sing it Barbra!!!
What editing software did you use for this. It sounds perfect!
Per the previous comments perms were very trendy in 1976. My aunt got one that looked just as bad but they were in style.
Well done. It's a great song and it doesn't sound extended.
Great voice great song , but she is the screwed up woman in the way we were.
Obviously, you should have gone to see Harrison...
I took a " first date" to see "Deliverance",.. MY obvious mistake...
It took me about 6yrs to piece this song together before I realized it was this song. Sorry about your expierence!
I always imagined fat girls with tambourines dancing down a Philly street to this song.
too funny
Bob Laubach.. kinky!
Dang, who’s the bass player on this? Fantastic bass lines for sure!

Probably the best female vocalist in the past 50 years , although I can’t stand her politics
Love her politics! Right side of history. We agree on the best female vocalist in the past 50 yes.
To bad she's a stinking Dem (and a cry baby)
Hilarious! Thank you! I can see Barbra Streisand twerking to this while performing this in concert. LOL!
David Garcia ur a fucking idiot
Beautiful song* utube John bavas cabaret
Love Barbara striesand
Barbra
NICE! Where can I get an mp3 of this version?
Hi Liz !
This is a cover of a Laura Nyro song. Its a great pop version but the Laura original has more soul as Babbs had no clue what the song was about. Check out also the alternative lyrics version on here by Nyro.

Yep!

Love her singing - with a reported $400 million in the bank don't think she should get too involved in politics
Peggy Lipton recorded this first
Sounds almost the same as the original.
What a load of crap. Babs for once acknowledged Diana Ross by using DR's unreleased version and calling it her own. YAWN.
lol

Relax and enjoy the beauty. Forget the politics and race competition.
It’s very cool when she sings but when she talks, I have to turn her off.
