Murray Cod-River drifting Adventure

- Come along for one hell of an adventure with some awesome fish caught along the way. We load up the new and improved inflatable complete with new carpeted timber decks and bow mount electric motor. We cover 24 kilometres of the beautiful Murrumbidgee river over a couple of nights, which included taking on a few rapids one of which claims 2x rod tips right at the start of the trip. But thats just part of being out on the river completely independent of the outside world, this is living.
great to see another dad teaching their kids the joy of "Cod thumb" it's part and parcel of catching them i reckon. i always did it as a kid and so will my kids haha
Sometimes it’s just gotta happen, I generally run gloves as open cuts and being a plumber by trade along with work around our little farm are a good recipe for infection and that’s not pretty. They are fairly resilient kids which doesn’t always come easy but they will thank me for it in the long run, most of the time it’s fun 😆

Cheers Nathan, they do get out a fair bit but thankfully they appreciate it regardless of the fishing results. We are heading out again today, try to track down a few fish at the Juck.
Cool trip Dan, other than the broken rod. My old man used to say 'if you haven't broken anything you've never done anything'.

@@alexmarti7684 yeah no good mate, it’s been a wet few years down here, they predicted hot and dry this summer but that hasn’t happened.

That Was funny where you hear " if you didn't have the rods sticking out we would of been right" Hope the rod wasn't too expensive.Interesting to see the best fish coming from trolling, I was already going to try trolling from the kayak because it's somthing different and you are fishing a different part of the water column where people casting don't fish so much.I am going to try trolling 2 rods in a river, I like to push the limits!
Thank you, it sure is great spending time with them out there. Yeah talk about stating the obvious 😆, they usually sit nicely within the bounds of the deck but I think the initial jarring against an unseen rock in the rapid pushed them forward do when we spun and slammed into the next one it was the end of them. Not too exy, I tend to spend the bigger money on the reels not the rods.
Yeah it was a cool capture and something I’ve never done, it certainly would be a handful trolling 2 rods off the yak.
@DanWebberFishing Thanks Dan interesting to hear what lead up to the rod breaking, relieved to hear it wasn't that expensive like a G-Loomis or somthing, I am a bit the same as you I will spend more money on the reel because there is less chance of mishaps with a reel, I usually don't spend more than $150 for a rod.I have got a couple of Shimano T-curves but if they break I will just get a Shimano Raider or a Samaki.I have got a Diawa Tatula for Mulwala that was about $300.I tried the 2 rods trolling out out of a kayak it is just wasn't manageable in a river with current and wall to wall snags (Ovens River) but I think it will be doable in a Lake like Mulwala.
Great content,always rewarding with the family....the boys will learn more on the river than the kids playing video games and town life.👏👏👏👏
Cheers John, I think the best bit besides the fishing and outdoor learning is the stuff they don’t see yet or may never actually see, things like resilience and the ability to be present and go with the flow (excuse the pun😆) and it’s a hell of a lot of fun along the way.

It really is, they take a bit of organising and not exactly a laid back kinda trip but geez it’s a great time out there on the river. This is a Takakat 3.4 but there are also some cheaper alternatives about, my first inflatable was only $500 and it’s still going.
Good drift Dan. Definitely a different session when you have the kids but cool to see the relaxed nature. Curious as to how you secure your external battery for your chest mount go pro? I normally tuck mine into my hat which results in massive headache.
Thanks Doug, it pays to play it fairly casual with the kids it’s more fun for everyone that way. I use Velcro onto the back of the chest mount, onto the centre section that runs down the back, or I just duct tape them in place.
@DanWebberFishing uh ha bit of diy. You'd think someone would have come up with an accessory purpose build. I've nearly lost my battery pack so many times.
How frustrating can the weedless be I'm still trying to fine a way to increase hook up, but those days were they aren't quite on are tough.
@@DougKelly2828 it’s a funny thing the Weedless plastic, I’ve had a bad run on my last couple trips but previous to that the hook up rate was good. Adding hooks means you can’t get the bait in where it needs to be to draw the bite and they definitely do draw the bites when other lures don’t. If you do find a way id be keen to hear about it.
Great video of the drift. Some big fish water for sure. The kind of stuff dads should be doing with their kids.
Definitely mate, this section is usually way clearer so hopefully things line up for another trip soon and we can find out what it’s really got.

Hey Riley, I run 50lb braid on all mine and the boys are on 40. Leaders are also 50lb.

@@RileyCronin-np6ll I use a Veritas tournament 7” 6-10kg for topwater in the river for throwing big wakes and paddlers. The main rod I’m using in this clip after breaking both other rods is a 5’10” Zodias in the medium (10-20lb) from memory. It’s a pretty handy stick but not overly forgiving if your just starting out.
Best bang for your buck is the Abu range the Rayrex is great value and I’ve just ordered one as a replacement for one I broke out there.

Gday James, I love the inflatable, I liked my cheapy that much I upgraded to a Takacat 3.4m. Yes I built timber decks for it and carpeted them with marine carpet. It completely changes the feel and fish ability of the boat, it’s great. We did film a deck build video for the Social Fishing website but if you don’t want to join ( it’s bludy fantastic) then shoot through any questions you have.
