As the rain pelts down in Madikwe Game Reserve, a pack of wild dogs hones in on a female kudu. After chasing the cow into a waterhole, the eager dogs surround the water waiting for the opportunity to strike. After the pack manages to draw the kudu out of the water, a herd of seemingly curious elephants shows up to inspect the action.
Nico Verster, lodge manager for Jamala Madikwe Royal Safari Lodge recounts the incident: "We were all amazed at the arrival of the elephant herd as we assumed they would keep their distance due to the on-going kill, however they seemed curious and ready to get involved. The matriarch attempted to chase the dogs off but soon gave up, forming a barrier around their own young and standing their ground, they watched the kill happen, in silence."
It's pretty rare to experience such a phenomenal animal encounter and even rarer to capture it on film.

The elephants are like, this is fucked up!
It's like they knew she was prego
Elephants: None of that in front of our kids.
If only the elephants showed up a few minutes earlier...
They are like come on we gotta drag him away from the Elephants
the elephants was like: ok, you want some of this 😂
Elephant saying can I watch lol
Is audio recorded on vinyl?
Edosardo73 We were going for a vintage feel :-P It's the sound of rain that you can hear in the audio. We received this footage from Jamala Madikwe Royal Safari Lodge, so it was not shot using professional equipment.
I like the video, and the audio too... i love vinyls ahah!
Edosardo73 It'a raining !!
*****
Ok, i was joking ahahah!
it was pregnant too. at 4:22 two dogs run off with the unborn.
Nice little BOGO deal for the dogs.
Elephants back away slowly as they watch those dogs eat the kudu alive
That one dog at like 0:46, he's like "cheese it, it's the fuzz!" Elephants trying to step in really was amazing.
The elephants couldn't have cared less about the kudu. They just wanted to stop at the watering hole and the dogs were in the way.
Hey earth touch, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the behaviour of the elephants, were they just watching incase they themselves were attacked?
Hi, thanks for watching. Although, it's unusual, young elephants are sometimes attacked by bigger predators, so elephants will typically chase and see off any potential threats. In this instance, the herd was probably just coming down to the water to drink and, after encountering the wild dogs by accident, instinctively tried to chase them away from the waterhole to protect the herd.
Elephants: get away from out friend
Kudu: kill me
It's a boy!
LMAO
better than eating dudu.
We had to give you a thumbs up for that ...
The Elephants could have been the Saving Grace for the bleeding animal from the spirited Wild dogs...Nature has its way though...
Where is this video shooting taking place? The terrain looks quite suitable for strapping singled out herders in body's of water and such.
This wild dogs are always fascinating and are very very reminiscent to how wolves behave. I also find them to very cute for some odd reason.
P O P culture If they werent horrifically vicious, they would be on the top 10 creatures to try to have as pets. They ARE adorable, they are just wicked little beasts. Though, thats just how they are lol and I doubt they can ever be domesticated. Sad :c
Cute?! They're disgustingly vicious. Did u see how they were biting the poor deer's face off to inflict pain for fun.
AAron Thom Yea, hehe, which is why I mentioned how they would be adorable if it werent for how terrible they were. Physically, they are cute, but as a being, you dont want to get near them.
You have time inflict damage to kill something. Wow your dumber then I thought. The more bleeding you cause quicker the death. Not to mention you can easily cause serious damage attacking soft areas like the face. You need to research things before you make yourself look stupider.
+P O P culture They are soo cute, i really want one. I am going to adopt one this week. I love them. BTW, toughest KUDU i have ever seen. Even after 5 min of ripping out its intestines and guts, etc.. it was still moving and still alive. UNREAL. it did NOT want to die. It probably is still alive as we speak. Who knows with this animal.. nothings impossible.
There is nothing much for those elephants to do except offer some BBQ sauce, or something. LOL!
Very interesting footage.
That was some amazing footage
Damn one of those wild dogs got a nasty little kick to the head before they caught it. And they pulled a unborn baby out of her.
The elephants were waving to the camera
so dark yet so real
Wow that's a big herd of elephants
There were 15 Elephants and 5 wild dogs and 1 Kudu
This was really intense to watch. I was wondering why the Kudu was crouching in the water like that, and why she already appeared bloody. I thought maybe she was giving birth, and lo and behold, the wild dogs actually pull a baby OUT of her. That's incredible to catch on camera. So that makes me curious...
1) Was the mother Kudu crouching in the water like that in an attempt to hide the scent of her giving birth?
2) The dogs were paying a lot of attention to that area of her - were they specifically trying to go for the baby?
The dogs like to kiss the prey before eating. Raise the toast.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this with us! :) you do a mighty fine job!
thanks
What is the name for a group of Elephants? Im thinking "Herd" or Pact?
Its herd
very good scene with rain
the wild dog looking like a zombie
it almostlooks like the group of elephants are trying to push the dogs away from the helpless dear, one can only wish :P
Graphic....The elephants were just like: "what should we do?....this is sad...". The death of the kudu was interupted by the arrival of the elephants, so she suffered more. Poor kudu. But this is truly nature guys.
You think? Elephants are supposed to be quite empathetic, so they may have experience some concern for the kudu, especially as she was pregnant (which I missed the first time watching this.) I inclined more to think that the elephants needed that entire area so they could drink, but wanted the wild dogs out of there and the kudu didn't enter into it. But you've given me something to think about.
omg...she is alive.. poor thing..but they have to eat
Yes I agree, they eat her from alive to death. It's sad, but the wild dogs have to survive. Eat fast or other predators will arrive to chase them off and steal their kill.
I saw a hunting scene with wild dogs in Zimbabwe. You must have a strong stomach ... But from what I understand, the animal dies faster than a pride of lions attacking a buffalo or it takes more time. Is this true?
Hi Valerie, you are correct. Wild dogs typically disembowel their prey and this will usually kill the animal faster than other killing techniques. Although, unfortunately for the kudu in this instance the elephants delayed the process a bit.
God that was painful to watch
Dramatic and beautifully captured. These wild dogs are propbably the most successful hunters. 75 % of their hunts result in a kill. And they don't make much fuss about it either; rather than barking, just a few soft chirps now and then.
nice movies
Elephants sometimes seem to possess empathy that extends beyond their own species. There are several videos in YT of them trying to help other species escape predators.
lol, nonsense
yes very interesting! That's nature...
elephants should have come 5 minutes earlier.
How many of u noticed the dogs taking the baby out of the kudu
Don't they have the sense to get out of the rain?
How can the nature be so cruel
African wild dogs have to be some of the coolest hunters to watch. Its different than lions and cheetahs but i find it so fasinating...
abortion?
Hello all...Can I just why all these animals are eaten
from the behind and ' private' parts?
In all the clips I've watched, they are attacked from
the behind and I just wondered why it wasn't the
stomach or sides?.....Many,Many thanks.
+Summer Reyes I'd venture a guess that it's because the skin is soft in those areas. If the wild dogs were to try and eat into the back or the side of the prey, the skin/hide is tougher in those parts.
That's what I think; I'm not an archaeologist though.
+Truly Zambian Thank you
Archaeology has nothing to do with this, you fucking idiot.
Nutella Dinosaur
^^^^^^ Internet tough guy detected.
If your parents see you writing things like that, they'll confiscate your little mobile devices and ground you for a month, kid.
+Truly Zambian My dad is dead, and my mom don't give a fuck about what I say on the internet. As long as I don't give my address out. Also, what makes you think I'm an "Internet tough guy" ? I called you a fucking idiot because Archaeology has nothing to do with animals, you are an idiot.
man elephants ready to stomp on these little dogs
...OMG! 4:22 baby pulled out of calf :(
the ones with babies are the easiest to kill, what is what i learned here to day :two in one meal:
Good
Why didn't you help ......................... the dogs eat the kudu
+Royal Wolf one thing I noticed is most herbivores are very dumb outside maybe Elephants
+vivahernando1 Why don't help the dogs? They are hungry.
Brutal way to go...
omg with the baby too
unbelievable footage
reminds me of cops dragging a obnoxious drunk out of his house
Amazing
Awesome! Its amazing to see how they start ripping the Kudu's intestines while its alive, especially whilst some say rifle hunting is inhumane... this is africa!
Damnn Naechaa uu scarrayy
i seen videos of a baby elephant injured by lions the elephants chase away the lions.. but the young elephant cant stand up on its feet so the elephants walk away and watch the lions eat it..
Wow, that sounds intense. We have filmed a pride of lions taking down and eating an elephant alive - it was a very difficult scene to film.
Earth Touch when I was a child my dad watched wild life documentaries, discovery, and everything nature oriented he could find. I cried allot. He explained the best he could, but it still upset me. I couldn't understand why the people were just watched and did nothing. Now I understand now I understand natural selection, and I am sincerely relieved to hear that in those circumstances it isn't easy to do.
so elephants are keen to intervene in a circumstance like this, but these rangers and videographers have their nonsense principle of not interfering.
This is nature. Humans should only observe & not intervene in the natural order of things. And I did not see the elephants intervene with the wild dogs meal. They were only curious bystanders.
I am in tears. No animal deserves to die. May God bless this beautiful animal.
***** It is very graphic and intense to watch this, I agree. But in wild life it is going to be: to eat, or be eaten. The animals are hunter or prey. Survival of the fittest. It is not about deserving to die. The wild dogs have to eat. If they don't eat they are going to die. The Kudu fed a pack of wild dogs. One life (the kudu) or two (pregnant kudu), to feed more then two other animals. Nature is scary, but every animal has its purpose on this earth.
Linda Daniels They should be given something else to eat why the Kudu who had a baby in her belly :(
***** I understand you, it is sad, I know. But this is truly nature. Nature can be beautiful, but it is not all about the things we like to see, as a human. Wildlife, like the wild dogs, should hunt for their food, that's nature. Give them food, is not an option. Without predators there will be too many prey animals and would disbalance nature. The elephants made the death of the kudu longer and more painful, but usually wild dogs kill their prey quick.
Linda Daniels Hehe, I believe anyone's deeper pits of denial comes from the methods of some predators's hunts. These dogs, as well as some other animals, do not bother trying to kill the animal before feeding. To us humans, this seems entirely cruel and unnecessary. However, it is true, Nature is cruel as it is Beautiful. Life itself is like an Eldrich abomination on its own as it lives within reason but at the same time doesnt. And, as such, everything is so mind bogglingly dynamic.
I havent looked too much into these dogs yet, but I will assume this method just stems from how they were raised by their evolutionary branch. Perhaps it IS necessary for them outside just being how they are, in ways like, maybe they just dont possess the strength and size to fully take down its prey so they rely on just what they can get out of it, whether it falls and dies or not.
***** great when see wilddogs tear the gutsout
the elephants the watchers
cool ☺☺🐕☝
i feel deceived
Wow
j am not afraid of elephants as wild malthezer
Elephants are so stupide...
Life's a bitch
I like venison too.
The elephants were awesome, and all of the animals were lovely, but am I the only one that winces seeing this? XD I like to pretend that they kill the animal before eating it from behind so it feels every bite....
It can be difficult to watch, but despite this apparently gruesome killing technique, wild dogs are recognised as highly successful hunters and by disembowelling their prey, they usually kill it quite quickly. However, in this instance, the elephants did prolong the process a little.
I really fricking hate these wild hyenas they have no mind 😠😠😠😠😠
+Sara Naughton They're not hyenas, they're painted dogs.
+Necromancer Bernard ok thx sorry I just felt really sorry for the animals cuz I hate animals dying but thank you 😅
Sara Naughton No need to apologize, you didn't do anything wrong. But yeah, nature is pretty fucked sometimes. Well, pretty much all the time. Most animals don't care about the suffering of other animals in the slightest, we're one of the few that actively empathizes with creatures nothing like us and it can be a shock when one sees that most animals don't share that.
+Necromancer Bernard If you were starving, living in the wild, you wouldn't give a shit either.
what if you were eaten alive
My Pitbull would fuck those wild dogs up
They just rip their pray to pieces while its still alive
Just like the kudu eats its food. Identical eating methods.
I hate wild dogs more than any other predators, they eat their kills alive!
So do I
Them "wild dogs" are Hyheanas
Слонам то стыд, такие большие и боятся маленьких собачек!
That was some amazing footage
