    As the rain pelts down in Madikwe Game Reserve, a pack of wild dogs hones in on a female kudu. After chasing the cow into a waterhole, the eager dogs surround the water waiting for the opportunity to strike. After the pack manages to draw the kudu out of the water, a herd of seemingly curious elephants shows up to inspect the action.
    Nico Verster, lodge manager for Jamala Madikwe Royal Safari Lodge recounts the incident: "We were all amazed at the arrival of the elephant herd as we assumed they would keep their distance due to the on-going kill, however they seemed curious and ready to get involved. The matriarch attempted to chase the dogs off but soon gave up, forming a barrier around their own young and standing their ground, they watched the kill happen, in silence."
    It's pretty rare to experience such a phenomenal animal encounter and even rarer to capture it on film.

    Hey earth touch, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the behaviour of the elephants, were they just watching incase they themselves were attacked?

    • @earthtouchtv
      @earthtouchtv  10 лет назад +4

      Hi, thanks for watching. Although, it's unusual, young elephants are sometimes attacked by bigger predators, so elephants will typically chase and see off any potential threats. In this instance, the herd was probably just coming down to the water to drink and, after encountering the wild dogs by accident, instinctively tried to chase them away from the waterhole to protect the herd.

    This was really intense to watch. I was wondering why the Kudu was crouching in the water like that, and why she already appeared bloody. I thought maybe she was giving birth, and lo and behold, the wild dogs actually pull a baby OUT of her. That's incredible to catch on camera. So that makes me curious...
    1) Was the mother Kudu crouching in the water like that in an attempt to hide the scent of her giving birth?
    2) The dogs were paying a lot of attention to that area of her - were they specifically trying to go for the baby?

      You think? Elephants are supposed to be quite empathetic, so they may have experience some concern for the kudu, especially as she was pregnant (which I missed the first time watching this.) I inclined more to think that the elephants needed that entire area so they could drink, but wanted the wild dogs out of there and the kudu didn't enter into it. But you've given me something to think about.

    I saw a hunting scene with wild dogs in Zimbabwe. You must have a strong stomach ... But from what I understand, the animal dies faster than a pride of lions attacking a buffalo or it takes more time. Is this true?

    • @earthtouchtv
      @earthtouchtv  10 лет назад +5

      Hi Valerie, you are correct. Wild dogs typically disembowel their prey and this will usually kill the animal faster than other killing techniques. Although, unfortunately for the kudu in this instance the elephants delayed the process a bit.

    Dramatic and beautifully captured. These wild dogs are propbably the most successful hunters. 75 % of their hunts result in a kill. And they don't make much fuss about it either; rather than barking, just a few soft chirps now and then.

      +Summer Reyes I'd venture a guess that it's because the skin is soft in those areas. If the wild dogs were to try and eat into the back or the side of the prey, the skin/hide is tougher in those parts.
      That's what I think; I'm not an archaeologist though.

      Earth Touch when I was a child my dad watched wild life documentaries, discovery, and everything nature oriented he could find. I cried allot. He explained the best he could, but it still upset me. I couldn't understand why the people were just watched and did nothing. Now I understand now I understand natural selection, and I am sincerely relieved to hear that in those circumstances it isn't easy to do.

    • @LindaD1982
      @LindaD1982 9 лет назад +5

      ***** It is very graphic and intense to watch this, I agree. But in wild life it is going to be: to eat, or be eaten. The animals are hunter or prey. Survival of the fittest. It is not about deserving to die. The wild dogs have to eat. If they don't eat they are going to die. The Kudu fed a pack of wild dogs. One life (the kudu) or two (pregnant kudu), to feed more then two other animals. Nature is scary, but every animal has its purpose on this earth.

    • @ighirghrhgrohgoh

    • @LindaD1982
      @LindaD1982 9 лет назад +3

      ***** I understand you, it is sad, I know. But this is truly nature. Nature can be beautiful, but it is not all about the things we like to see, as a human. Wildlife, like the wild dogs, should hunt for their food, that's nature. Give them food, is not an option. Without predators there will be too many prey animals and would disbalance nature. The elephants made the death of the kudu longer and more painful, but usually wild dogs kill their prey quick.

    • @Dazreiello-old
      @Dazreiello-old 9 лет назад

      Linda Daniels Hehe, I believe anyone's deeper pits of denial comes from the methods of some predators's hunts. These dogs, as well as some other animals, do not bother trying to kill the animal before feeding. To us humans, this seems entirely cruel and unnecessary. However, it is true, Nature is cruel as it is Beautiful. Life itself is like an Eldrich abomination on its own as it lives within reason but at the same time doesnt. And, as such, everything is so mind bogglingly dynamic.
      I havent looked too much into these dogs yet, but I will assume this method just stems from how they were raised by their evolutionary branch. Perhaps it IS necessary for them outside just being how they are, in ways like, maybe they just dont possess the strength and size to fully take down its prey so they rely on just what they can get out of it, whether it falls and dies or not.

      It can be difficult to watch, but despite this apparently gruesome killing technique, wild dogs are recognised as highly successful hunters and by disembowelling their prey, they usually kill it quite quickly. However, in this instance, the elephants did prolong the process a little.
