Instinct is the easiest way for us to refer to animal's behaviour when we don't understand it. They are clever and are able to analyse their surroundings and actually make decisions.

So they have to prioritize quick feeding above all else, and that means not making time to kill an animal that's already incapacitated and accessible for feeding. It's gruesome to us but it's just what works for them.
