Just a grown up F-91W which does most 99% of what people need in a watch. Add solar, atomic time and 200mtr WR together with indestructibility and you end up with your G Shock !!! Great video Bruce.
Welcome to the G-Shock world, Bruce! I have the positive LCD version of this watch and think it's great. I can say as the owner of a dozen other G-Shocks of various shapes, sizes, and colors, that you are warned: this is a very slippery slope for a watch enthusiast. Before you know it, they multiply in the collection like tribbles. Unless one gets the newest technology STN LCDs, the negative readout (gray numbers on a black background), the digits can be difficult to see in various lighting conditions and anyone considering one should understand these limitations. The positive LCDs (black numbers on a gray background) have much greater legibility. My only knock on the 5610 is that the buttons can be a little tough to push and generally need to be done with the tip of one's fingernail. Also, the tone of the alarm is quite faint on all solar-powered G-Shocks so anyone intending to use this as an alarm to wake them up in the morning needs to be a light sleeper. My original G-Shock, a DW-9400, has been going strong for 19 years and I still wear it several times a week. I know many traditional watch aficionados tend to look down at these watches as throw-away fashion pieces owing to their popularity with teenagers, but the Casio G-Shock has a well-earned place in the pantheon of horological achievement.
For those that don't know, holding down the light button more than 3 seconds will turn on/off the autolight function. With it on(indicator over seconds) when you're in a dark/low light environment, raising your wrist up to look at the time, the electro luminescence light will automatically come on for 1.5 seconds. It's a small but very unique feature that I love :)
I've got the standard version, love that it shows the day and month, which I couldn't live without, and that it keeps perfect time on account of daily long wave radio time synchronisation. The really cool thing though is that it's totally maintenance free, and just gets on with what it's supposed to be doing without any user input at all; I almost never have to press any of the buttons or make any sort of adjustment to the thing, and the power reserve indicator has never moved from the high position since I've been using it. A couple of months ago, if I remember correctly, I used the back-light function and so pressed that button......
I’ve had this watch for about 6 months and love it. I’ve got the positive display coming in about 2 days. Bit stupid buying the same watch twice but I really wanted this increased legibility.
I am with you except for the negative display. I am definitely ready to pick up one with the positive display. It seems perfect for any active situation! Great review! The auto backlight is another great function. When turned on, the backlight comes on any time the wrist is turned if the environment is a low light situation. If battery operated, I would not want this function. Since the solar power is so efficient at keeping the watch charged, I love it.
Great review of a great watch, I prefer positive displays as they are easier to read. I have been wearing a DW5000SL for the last 6 years along my mechanicals, and just ordered the GW-S5600, basically your watch with carbon fiber strap and all the SS parts replaced by titanium which makes it the lightest G shock ever made at only 47g
I bought the classic DW5600E ten months ago inspired by a Mat Stevens video. Love it as a beater, and it's gained only 5 seconds in that ten months. 1/2 second off per month - not bad. Less than $50.
Good choice. I have a modern Rolex Milgauss, Oris, Tissot's, Seiko's and several high end G Shocks, namely the frogman and rangeman. But, I have this watch as well, the standard solar version and it's my favorite G Shock out of all my G Shocks. The rangeman I wear snowboarding and the frogman is more just because I think it was great looking, but the GW is so comfy and classic looking. Everyone should have one.
I have the Apple Watch 6 and I miss having a G-shock. This thing is just a fancy fitness tracker. The rugged yet stylish simplicity of the G-Shock is the best. You can go subtle or loud with your colours too.
I will get my first g shock in the next 2 weeks from now (my engagement day). my fiancé got a nice engagement ring but what about me? an amazing g shock DW-5600-BB
I've been wearing my G Shock for over ten years. Had to replace the strap once. Other than that, no problems. I believe it will last longer than I will.
Wanted a countdown timer for some sailboat racing. (Gotta cross that start line at the right time.) Casio makes watches that will do that in the $15 dollar range. But, hey, the cheap square is only $40 and I know it will also take the beating sailing can dish out. So I bought it, as a simple tool, and instantly joined the cult of G-shock. Pure 80's Swagger. Now I'm lusting after the GW-m5610bc-1jf. That combi bracelet looks even more comfy.
I have this watch with the positive display because I'm getting older and as cool as the stealth looks, I want the legibility. When I first got it I wasn't excited about the 80's looks. But the thing works so good, is so comfortable, the retro look starts growing on you like crazy. This is my everyday beater watch and I end up wearing over other nice looking watches to less casual events, just because its so light and I just love it that much! Good review, btw, and awesome scenery!
I just found this video. I have the positive display version on a combi bracelet. One of my favorites. It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of your videos, just excellent video production and macros. Hope you and your family have been well.
My beater is Citizen satelite wave GPS F900 Titanium watch. Looks good, light as feather and tough as hell. I can never get over the Casio G shock looks, well unless its the Casio Oceanus series
I use mine as the benchmark to set all my others watches to when adjusting the time. I've also put a blacked out NATO (with adapters) from Jays & Kays on it, now looks very stealthy.
TigerRider Same here. I've ordered this watch on Amazon from Japan and bought the JaysAndKays NATO 2 piece Strap. Unfortunately both hasn't been delievered so far. Can you share some pictures of yours on imgur, I'm wondering about the looks.
Glad you liked them, G-Shocks are perfect beater watches than can take any damage. One small note, actually you may have to replace the battery in the future. It is rechargeable, but it's not eternal by any means. Usually they last about 10 to 15 years in solar G-Shocks.
as someone who has had alot of g shocks i have to say they are amazing! the only thing you should not do with them is swim in a pool with chlorine with them. the watch gets ruined with chlorine. besides that, toughest watch ever.
Its been 4 yrs now since this video. Have u stop getting impressed ..?🤣 I am still...for 35yrs n going. They never stop impressing me. Got 20+ of em in my vault. Used to be 50+...had to let go most of em during this pamdemic. I can say g-shock saved me n my family these 2yrs.😂😂😂
Now there are smartphone apps that emulate the time signal stations. Clockwave for the iPhone/iPad is one. Now you need not be in range or worry if the stations will be taken off the air.
The time signals are broadcast around the clock, the best time to receive them is at night. The watch needs to conserve power so it just listens at some select times. These time signals are great for setting clocks and watches and much lower power and cost than satellite signals.
I have the 5610 negative display but with the combi bracelet and I'm waiting for the bullbars. I think is perfect I also have a 6900 solar positive. I though I cold live with only one but is not possible and the worst part is that a friend bought a rangeman... and I tried... and now is on the list jaja
Totally agree with you Bruce this is the same model of watch I purchased recently from here in the UK. I paid £104 for mine in a watch sale saving around £20 to £30 off the original price. It does everything you need in a watch without having to worry about bumps or scrapes you might have wearing other watches you have in your collection which you need to keep in good condition. For the price and all the features on this watch it's a no brainer in purchasing one, I really enjoy wearing mine.
Thanks for the review! Looking at getting one of these in the negative display, but does anyone know if the "U" models ((newer) which changed the backlighting and added features) ALSO have brighter non-illuminated displays? Thanks!
Had a similar Tough Solar G-shock watch....had it for 9 yrs never stoped working.....but after all those years the rubber seals started to go, they wanted $140 to get the insides fixed do to moisture. Not worth it since I had only paid $118 for watch. So I will be getting this one now. Awesome watches, they never stop working, well, till the seals start to go bad.......well worth the money though.
Great review. I have nice time pieces in my collection. I pretty much wear a gshock every day now. I never have to change watches at all. I can wear a gshock to work than go workout, go shooting or numerous other things.
Just ordered mine, I've wanted one for ages but have been waiting for the price to drop...Amazon was selling them for £130 but it's currently £83, bargain!
I literally JUST purchased this off ebay after watching your video! It's the Japanese version (whatever that means lol) but I have the 5600 in white and I needed to add a negative display to my watch collection.. I'm stoked to get this!
This Casio watch movement will attempt to calibrate the watch up to six times a day until it successfully synchronizes the time with time signal radio WWVB at night (when the signal is strongest). As long as the watch has sufficient power and can receive the radio signal it should always be accurate. Pretty amazing. It's too bad the watch straps eventually break. It would be nice if Casio offered a simple, strictly analog Multi Band 6 G-Shock similar in design to the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Day Date. Most of their analog watches are either too complicated or incorporate digital elements (except for some Japanese WaveCepter models).
Check out the Casio Oceanus S-100 (among other models). Japanese market only, but Seiya, Rakuten, etc., sell them to US. Analog, tough solar, multiband, and are very simple in design. Hardened titanium case and bracelet too.
I've got a Khaki King incoming, but ever since I gifted a square G to my brother, last Christmas, I've wanted one of my own. Maybe this is what pushes me over the edge.
I've been researching the square G-shocks for a while and this has to be my favourite model, judgning by looks. I tried a friend's GW-M5610, the one with the regular positive screen, and it feels great. What this negative display version fixes are the mixed colors, it's just so sleek! Can't find it in Italy though :( How is the legibility?
Just got this today finally. From Japan. Had a bit of problems getting it to auto sync to my time zone but finally got it... question is will it auto sync every night even though my house has a metal roof and in a dark bedroom considering it's midnight?! Haha.
Nice video, glad I found it. I am kind of interested in getting one of the most up to date square models (w/ solar battery), and there seems to be so many versions. I am wondering if the new bluetooth models also use the multiband 6, or is it one or the other? I think I would also go with the negative display as well, can you help?
must admit, it is a very comfortable watch. Only criticism is it can be tricky to see while cycling to work waering sunglasses. Have to angle it differently to catch the sun properly otherwise it can be hard to see. It can't be too much of a problem, because I just bought the metal band version to go with this one :D
5610's are the best and the worst watches ever. The best because they do everything so well, the worst because they expose how flawed all other watches are. I even had the JDM 5000 and it's much heavier than 5610 which makes it worse in my opinion (because you lose that barely there factor)
Paul Costley I have to concur, the gw5000 is super solid with it's steel dlc construction, and the most comfortable with it's super soft resin. Bruce, they are a great price on Seiya Japan right now. a must have for square g lovers.
Hi guys. Sorry to bother you with this question but is the model number given in the video description complete? I can't seem to find a negative display and all black version. Could someone state the complete model number? Thanks
It depends on the place on earth you live. Most of Europe, Japan, China, US, no problem. If you are not in reach of one of the radio towers, you can always use an app. on your phone to synchronise. There is very nice videowork on RUclips about the Radio/Wave Ceptor technology, and how to use it. I love it! I even stay up sometime to watch all watches synchronise!
It works well in many countries where there are radio towers but it doesn't work in Australia apparently which I found out from Australian reviewers on RUclips of this watch. You can however buy G-Shocks with bluetooth which can be synced to your mobile phone in that case.
Gshock square is the greatest
Yeah
Just a grown up F-91W which does most 99% of what people need in a watch. Add solar, atomic time and 200mtr WR together with indestructibility and you end up with your G Shock !!! Great video Bruce.

Lee K just ordered my first square. The positive display 5610 :)

Ive had mine now for about 2.5 years....worn daily. I do physical work and travel quite a bit, its a beast and lives on my left arm.

Grab a Timex T49851 30$ at Amazon. THE BEST VALUE FOR $ FOR THE TOUGHEST WATCH with VIBRO ALARM!
Great review of a great watch, I prefer positive displays as they are easier to read.

The watch is cool but the nature shots were even better! Great video!

They are fantastic watches. Affordable, iconic, functional and in my opinion, very good looking
My G-Shock G-7900 has moon & tide phase, world time and all the usual gubbins, it's indestructible and cost me a staggering £60 new. I love them.

Yury Molodtsov 10 years is enough
I have had my tough solar for more than 10 years and it works the same as when it was new
as someone who has had alot of g shocks i have to say they are amazing! the only thing you should not do with them is swim in a pool with chlorine with them. the watch gets ruined with chlorine. besides that, toughest watch ever.
Swam in a pool in a span of 7 years with a GA110. Still on my wrist at night as my beater.

I started using G-Shock back in 1987 I hope you enjoy that one you have
I just ordered an M-5610 from Amazon for $150. Thanks for the video, man.
This watch with the far easier to read positive display is now $80 on Amazon. 👍
Thanks for the review! Looking at getting one of these in the negative display, but does anyone know if the "U" models ((newer) which changed the backlighting and added features) ALSO have brighter non-illuminated displays? Thanks!
Welcome to the club...started wearing one in 1987.
Awesome review! Picked up today for $89 new on Amazon 2/6/23. Wanted neg display to compliment my GW-5000.
Just got one, it’s a killer price. The bracelet makes it feel so much more upscale.
Yours didn't come with the linked combi bracelet? Mine did and it's awesome.
Just placed an order on Amazon
Really excited for my first gshock watch.
Thanks for the amazing reviews
Neg display sic for tac ops. Hard to see for joe flipperhead.

I have this. And the positive display version. And soon, the original beater beater... the 5600E! It's an addiction!
I have the exact model! Great looking legendary watch! 💪 🍻 🎊 🇷🇴
I love this watch I got it off Amazon for 99 dollar
I literally JUST purchased this off ebay after watching your video! It's the Japanese version (whatever that means lol) but I have the 5600 in white and I needed to add a negative display to my watch collection.. I'm stoked to get this!
Just got the same one! Have an aftermarket aged metal case coming for it too. excited.
As for as a utility watch it doesn't get any better.
Having a hard time choosing between negative and positive display watches :(
I bought the JDM version as well. Love this watch. I am thinking of getting the same one witht be Combi bracelet.. Just $30 more.

A Really Good Video And Excellent Watch All The Best To You.
Hi Bruce I have this watch fantastic watches and thanks for the video really helpful and enjoyed it thanks again
There are solar chronograph atomic time gshocks that look good. Check those out.
Can't find it in Italy though :(
How is the legibility?
I found a GW-M5610bb-1 for sale online can’t find any models like it some links say it might be a Japan import guy is asking $50 for it.
Legendary Casio! Never underestimate a Gshock
Hi looks like a great watch what is the full casio reference # for this watch?
I think, with the combi bracelet this watch will be the dopest watch in the world 😍😍😍
Have the same, fully agree (solar, radio). The one difference - mine has a white BG & dark numbers / text.
Are they easy to see when you are outdoors on a sunny day?
Just got this today finally. From Japan. Had a bit of problems getting it to auto sync to my time zone but finally got it... question is will it auto sync every night even though my house has a metal roof and in a dark bedroom considering it's midnight?! Haha.
Dont forget about the autolight feature
Nice video, glad I found it.
I am kind of interested in getting one of the most up to date square models (w/ solar battery), and there seems to be so many versions. I am wondering if the new bluetooth models also use the multiband 6, or is it one or the other? I think I would also go with the negative display as well, can you help?
Nice video Bruce. What's the full model number I should look for? Theres so many😂
Thanks for this review. It was very useful. Does it have a programmable timer function (useful for interval training)? Thanks.
I have the JDM. Absolutely love this watch.
You made a good choice dude!!!!
Who made this watch, Thailand or China?
Thailand
Great review bud, I actually have said watch. Surprised you didn't mention the auto light function? Either way, great review, brilliant watch.
Yes indeed if your an outdoors type of guy can't be beat . Practicality functionality it's perfect as a do the job timepiece..
PURE CLASS BROTHER NOW THIS IS A VIDEO LOVE YOUR STYLE SUBBED
Arguably the best value non screw back square. I'd go as far as saying the best value square currently available!
Even without multiband 6. These things only need to be adjusted maybe every 6 or so months beauty of quartz is highly accurate.
What is the product code for that red square with negative display? Btw superb review, makes me want to get one!
I’ve joined the G shock cult 😂!!!
I like your video and want to get this watch. Where do you get this watch, Amazon? Thank you!
Maybe I missed it in the video but where did you purchase this watch?
I have the same exact model, love it. I also have the GW5510-1BJF.
Just ordered G-Shock GW-M5610BB-1ER (glossy finish) cant wait for mailman lol
must admit, it is a very comfortable watch. Only criticism is it can be tricky to see while cycling to work waering sunglasses. Have to angle it differently to catch the sun properly otherwise it can be hard to see. It can't be too much of a problem, because I just bought the metal band version to go with this one :D
show us what u did on vacation man ?
5610's are the best and the worst watches ever. The best because they do everything so well, the worst because they expose how flawed all other watches are. I even had the JDM 5000 and it's much heavier than 5610 which makes it worse in my opinion (because you lose that barely there factor)
If you have this watch to this day i suggest you to try a stainless steel body and bracelet swap for it.
Check out the Casio GW-5000. BEST beater period.
Just picked one up based on reviews and comments. I'm only going to have 1 so might as well be this one!
i love my gw-5000 it is the toughest watch in the world.
Paul Costley I have to concur, the gw5000 is super solid with it's steel dlc construction, and the most comfortable with it's super soft resin. Bruce, they are a great price on Seiya Japan right now. a must have for square g lovers.
All true - Can't say enough about it.
Seiya has over $300 whereas Amazon has under $300.
Does anyone know the name of this watch, and were I could buy it?
might be the best watch channel atm. production values are top rate Bruce bravo xD
Hi guys. Sorry to bother you with this question but is the model number given in the video description complete? I can't seem to find a negative display and all black version. Could someone state the complete model number? Thanks
Thanks for the videos I have g shock watches there super watch thanks again 👍
Cool watch but the negative display just doesn't seem like a good choice to me.
The one with normal display is superior.
if I live in another country, would it still synchronize with atomic clock?
The case is rubber plastic or what does it come in metal cases?
How do you see the time?
I guess it's either daytime or night time
