In Brazil we have a Novel named Terra Nostra. There is this song on soundtrack! It shows somebody who is a Pilgrim in America but miss their birthland in Italy. Beautiful!
As great as Natalie Wood was in West Side Story, Anna Maria would have been a better choice perhaps because of her voice. I believe Natalie partially sang with Marni Nixon doing the more difficult passages - two singers singing one role! Anna Maria would have been an ideal Maria, and she has said it's her favorite role. She did perform it on the stage, but I don't know where that was. I suppose too that Natalie was a bigger star than Anna Maria.
