It’s always striking how much more attractive the simple designs of vintage cards are compared to all the atomic super blaster quantum electrochromodynamic gamma ray neutron diffractor crack dice pumpkin patch auto cards we have now.
Well said I agree 100%
Agree. One reason I collect the modern Heritage Chrome Refractors. Vintage look of the photo with the pop of a new card.
new stuff is exhausting. peeps will gravitate to vintage
Hey Chris.. that vending box ..yes as a young lad I would go to the corner marketplace and they would have the vending machines circa 1958-59 and up.. You would put a nickel in the slot push it in and pull it back out and the vending pack would be there..these machines would offer many different types of cards baseball, western, airplanes, and celebrities..and there was maybe three of these machines in the store!! Just another fun fact!! PS my close friend in this great hobby of ours is Rod Yiartie and he has some incredible items..he showed me his 61-62 Topps mini baseball card dealer samples..totally blown away by those!!
Sir, the more I watch your videos about vintage cards, the more and more I am falling in love with vintage cards, to the point that in the very near future, I may stop collecting modern cards and switch over to vintage card collecting only!
The historical aspect of vintage cards is what I love. Thank you for the work you do on your channel, and I thank God for making me a Sports Card fanatic! 🙌🤜🤛
Back in the 50s cards from vending boxes actually went into vending machines. The 5 card bundles were vended in said bundles. On occasion you'll see the vending machines at auction houses.
I did not know that!
Good info asmr people. I've got a lot of 1968 Topps cards in great shape from vending boxes and always thought 1966 was the first year of vending boxes, so this surprised me there were vending boxes as far back as the late 1950's.
Great video Chris as always. I agree with your view on the 1973 Clemente - I wonder if you cracked the case and sent it today to PSA would it grade a 10. I am leery of older PSA case grades of 10’s just because of the drastic price differential. 1973 Clemente in PSA 9 in October 2022 went for just $1546 - huge huge huge difference from $105k!It would seem to me the 9 was a bargain.
Ted
When I saw the Joe Jackson card I immediately thought of Field of Dreams. At the beginning of the movie, there is a still shot of Ray Liotta in that same card - albeit in reverse due to the movie depicting him being right-handed.
Great video as usual Chris. I think a fun video would be taking a look at lower PSA serial numbered cards like that Gretzky rookie and try to determine in todays grading market if it would still grade the same. A lot of the cards in this video seem to look a lot lower of a grade than given. I am getting cards back from PSA that are grading 7's that I still can't figure out what they are looking at.
The 1959topps football vending box is really cool..😍😲 First time ever seeing one of those and didn't know they wrapped cards in paper like that..🤔👀 Thanks for the great work Chris as usual.. Take care..👍💕🔥⚾👊
I see alot of old labels in this auction, which I hope continue staying old labels as they change hands. PSA really screwed up when they decided to become more strict on their grading standards. No point in changing your grading standards after decades of being in the business. Now there's a ton of old labels that many people call "inferior" to the new labels, while the new labels can be called under-graded. This causes alot of confusion and frustration within the hobby that should've never became an issue to begin with. What makes this even worse, is that PSA can decide to go lenient on grading again, which will force the old labels to become more accurately graded and the new labels more under-graded.
You of all people should know about 50's vending boxes-- all of those famous high grade '52 Mantles (included the "finest known example" that sold for $12.6M) were from a vending box find by Al "Mr. Mint" Rosen in 1985. I believe there were 40+ Mantle rookies in the box.
I'm thinking that that SGC Mantle was originally graded by PSA but the owner didn't like the grade, so they sent it to SGC. some of those sets are unreal!! Seems like they would sell for more with so many high grade cards. Thanks for the video Chris!!!
The 52T Jackie Autograph was the nicest thing in that auction by far. Props to whoever got it for $216k. Crazy to think it went for less than a 51b mays PSA 8. I would also take it any day of the week over the Diamond cut 52 Mantle. Nice review Chris.
Very cool video and amazing complete sets. Loved the Willie Mays 2nd year card
I have read that OPC cards were cut with a wire at the factory so the edges are expected to have some imperfections. I assume graders take that into consideration when they grade those cards.
Yes, piano wire.
It takes money to make money.
'52 Mantle sold for 600k as a SGC 8. Other than the centering/cut the card looks super tight.
'52 Mantle PSA 8 sells for ~1.5m.
Buy SGC 8, crack it send it to PSA. If it comes back an 8 you make ~900k. PSA grading fee for a card of this value is 10k. If it comes back a 7 (or lower somehow) you send it back to SGC. Technically they have to regrade it since the case has been cracked but given the provenance (send it back in/with the cracked case and grade) but there is near zero risk it would come back anything other than a SGC 8. (price $22,500) SGC would also be highly incentivized to return a high grade as the difference in their bottom line if they return a grade lower than an 8 is, and I'm wildly estimating here, ~$8k.
So you are risking about 33k but the upside is almost 900k. Seems like a no brainer.
Heritage's Instagram feed often shows cards they've been consigned before and after grading. They're using SGC almost exclusively and have some impressive items coming to sales in the near future.
I don’t get how one Mantle card graded slightly higher that’s a few years newer goes for less than a full set of high-grade cards. Give me that full set every day over one card.
As for the 1973 Clemente being a 10, I always ask who submitted it. If you or I submitted it, no way it’s a 10 because of the back. If a big-money dealer or company submitted it … that’s how a card with obvious flaws gets a 10. Card backs should matter.
That Jackie Robinson card was amazing.
Has baseball card exchange taken any credibility hit after their issues with the Pokémon case and that 86 Fleer basketball box at the National?
Not really
No..but, they should
I think they have taken a bit of a hit reputation-wise but the thing is they are the only game in town. There is no other company that authenticates wax. I thought it might open the door to another company entering that space but so far that hasn't happened
@@collectorinvestordealer RVP also authenticates wax I've heard but they're relatively new to the hobby.
wonder how many blazers ar eout there that dont get graded by PSA to avoid their egregious upcharge on value
That 73 clemente probably has bounced around and chipped up on the back. Ive seen some high grade psa cards with black borders get destroyed over time....in the psa slab.
Can someone explain to me if a baseball card printed in a different color than the original is a valuable mistake?
6:00 wow 70's cards worth some money
Great info.
Gretzky is so undervalued still...
Isn't it crazy that 600,000 for a Mantle seems like a good price? But compared to the 9.5 or PSA 8, it does.
The '51 Parkhurst Gordie Howe rookie SGC 8 for 38K seems like a bargain.
Also I appreciate all the Honorable Mentions that could easily hit a ebay highest rollers.
The real big money card in 1987 Fleer Basketball is the MJ sticker. PSA 10 would probably fetch 50-75k!
This is crazy money to me. I can’t even imagine having that kind of money to spend. The 73 Clemente technically was after his playing days; he died the previous December.
Love all those vintage beauties. Great video Chris.
I need to look through my collection and get busy selling 😆
Thinking maybe the person did send the 52 Topps Mantle to PSA..Sometimes PSA calls those slant/diamond cuts ...Miscuts....SGC goes not..On the 71 Topps Clemente or any card graded gem mint...Gem mint means perfect ..no off center..and the back must be included in the grade..Otherwise to me its just mint..
concerning 1973 Clem - I feel that PSA may be filling in some holes by letting more 10 go out. Cuz I can see imperfections on that 10 front and back.
If they crack the Mantle would they get a PSA 8? For a quick flip?
The money left on the table for that '52 Topps Mantle card, in an SGC holder vs. in a PSA holder, is astonishing!
When the money is on the table…cash in.
But 800 thousand dollars for a lot of people, is life changing money
Yeah didn't like that one. Should of been much much closer to the psa 8 pricing. Somebody stole that
Another nice video, but I prefer it when you do the honorable mentions at the end.
Chris;
Do you think the break-up value of those 2 incredible sets is more than what the buyer paid?
As a kid I remember seeing cards in a machine that looked similar to a gumball machine but you put your Nicole in and got a few card back.
I would guess the breakup value is more but its really hard to say
I prefer Chris’s high rollers over the other guys
So tempting, but ill have to keep that kidney. Excellent info.
Very cool assortment... Thanks again!
Chris, I'm surprised you don't recognize that the backs of 73 Topps baseball are full bleed and cannot ever be perfect. Also a rough cut on a 79 o pee chee Gretzky is from the factory and is not edge damage
dont be condescending to someone spending his time to create content for you that you are consuming for free. stfu
i have a 1979 o pee chee psa 8 that honestly looks better than that 9.. ill never sell it but still
Can you do a post about Stories From The Card Shop I Worked At
LOVE THE VINTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the vintage high rollers
You think someone just paid their way to a ten on that clemente and split the profit?
Wow.. that Bobby Hull is so good looking!! Wow!! and that HOWE! God damn!!
'52 Bowman set - wow!
That 52 Bowman set. 😮
Lots of those PSA grades look very generous. I would say they should be 1 or 2 full grades lower.
Thanks for another cool episode
Wow🤯 Soooo much amazing vintage!
Damn that 51 set is awesome. Re: Tilt...I don't get it. If you're going to be so picky about centering (and the hobby as a whole is)...tilt should be a big drawback. It really detracts from the aesthetic of the card for me. That 52 Mantle is a 7 at best for me.
The slant would really bother me. That is my one deal breaker on cards.
Certified by BBCE? does that still hold value? serious question as I would think their rep took a hit
As of now they are still the only game in town
59 Topps my favorite
love high rollers thanks
Love that 52 Jackie Robinson!!! I wonder what an autographed 56 version would sell for?
Probably in the 100-150 K+ range
@@ACD1994 you think it would go that high? Interesting...what about a 56 Roy Campanella autographed?
@@ericlindenmuth7517 I think so. Depending on the condition, though or if the auto is clean/authenticated. Roy Campanella- I have no idea, hopefully Chris can share his insight on that one, but probably half (maybe 1/3rd) of Jackie.. No disrespect to Campy. Because he's a legend. Just not sure how strong the market, is for his cards
Yeah...looks I was way off. Went to ebay for sold listings, Campanella autograph, is more affordable than I thought. Still would be a good one to add to a collection.
@@ACD1994 those Campy's are post accident. My 56 is pre-accident. I think that makes a big difference. Still Jackie is more historically desirable and would command more dollars.
My gosh i both love and hate these. I always see the Heritage center section of SCG every issue. I have some of these cards and it is amazing how much one level of grade up or down can effect the value and create a fortune for us poor folks. Then my wife sees it and yells "hey you have this one, and this one. Why aren't we rich?? Well my Gretzgy is graded 88 by SGC a long time ago. Not quite enough for the windfall Same with Clementes. Personally i have always loved the Hunt catalog. If you don't get it, go get it. It's free and beautiful and is great to look at every month. Heritage charges for their catalog. So my question to you and your subscribers is, is it ever ok to re grade? Meaning crack the grade 7 and send it back again or to one of the other companies and shoot for an 8? If you think your card is under graded and you paid less than 100 to grade it, it could be worth the game to move your Mantle from an 8 to a 9.
It is always okay to regrade in my opinion. As long as your willing to also potentially get a lower grade.
I thought the backs of the cracker jacks were upside down?
There were two years of cracker jacks - 1914 and 1915. One year the backs were upside down, the other year they were regular.
@@collectorinvestordealer learning every day!
Good show. 👍
raising interest rates is a transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. no surprise that these prices keep going up.
I see new video I clicked like immediately😂
Comc grading is back
The Clemente PSA 10 just shows how overrated PSA is and if the card were cracked open and reviewed by the other card companies, I doubt the result would yield as high a rating.
RIP Bobby Hull
Wrapped by BBCE. Would not pay a dime with anything they wrap. A very doubtful group of people.
💎👏
I prefer the high rollers over the regular as prices continue to plummet. RIP Bobby Hull
First..
Love this is still going! Community!
We have a winner!
If you're not first.. you're last
That sure is an ugly SGC 8 Mantle. The buyer agrees with me.
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC You should know.
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC Congrats on the home. Better luck with the Mantles.
