- In December 2010, we were in Eritrea to witness a first - two shipping containers being moved by rail from the port of Massawa to the capital city of Asmara. The containers were holding machine tools donated by the Danish State Railways to the Eritrean Railways.
In this Part, Day Two, we follow the train over the mountains and through some spectacular scenery, all the way to the Eritrean capital of Asmara.
Motive power is provided by double headed 0-4-4-0 Mallets numbers 442-54 and 442-55.
The final sequence shows 0-4-0 tank number 202-002 shunting the containers in the yard at Asmara.
Recorded in December 2010.

I am Eritran thanks for sharing God bless Eritra and Eritran people 🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🙏🙏🙏
I really enjoyed my visits to Eritrea. The people are all very nice and welcoming ...... Andy
The line was built by italians in the 30s,ascending from sea level to 2400 m in Asmara in abt. 140 km. There are still a couple of diesel driven Littorinas working in passenger tourist service, all italian built.
Unfortunately, my information is that nothing is working at the moment and may never work again. There are no tourists, of course ..... Andy
Andy and Dandan , your work is marvelous , fantastic. The place is Surreal , the trains picturesque and wonderful , lovely peoples. Congrats , from 🇧🇷 Brasil/ Renato RS.
Thank you for the compliment, Renato. I agree - Eritrea is a lovely place ........ Andy
What a great pair of videos. Nearly died when I saw the signalman's dance at 6:00 - only Africa!
You're right. This could only be in Africa .... Andy
I think the man is bursting of happiness to see his old railway in function again. if you look, he's an old man who was i bet a signalman before, and i think during war he likely abandoned hope of ever seeing the gutted railway come back in his lifetime.
and then the backbreaking work Eritreans invested in bringing the railroad back to life. But when he saw that train roll past, that's when he really knew - the trains are back!
@@bluemoondiadochi ..... but not very often, sadly!! ..... Andy
Excellent videos. Thank you.
Thank you for the compliment. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos ..... Andy
It is so weird to see Maersk containers on a train driven by steam engines. It really is the old world meeting the new.
It is odd isn't it? This was a one off incident and has never happened again since. It's actually mentioned in the Wikipedia notes about the railway ....... Andy
Great video Andy. Nice to see some more foreign steam.
Glad you're enjoying them John. I'm slowly working my way through some of my older stuff ...... Andy
great video thanks for sharing with us
And thank you for your comment. Please take a look at some of my other videos. I'm sure there'll be some others you enjoy too! .... Andy
Really impressive pictures,
best Regards from Germany.
Thank you for that compliment ..... Andy
Does the line from Massawa to Asmara not see much use any more? I tried to follow it on Google Maps and in many places it was hard to find.
🇮🇹🥀 🇪🇷
so is this train regularly pulled by steam or are the steam locomotives just for a special occasion?
They very rarely operate. Only now if steam enthusiasts pay for them ....... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam A pity. If they had a few diesel locos they could run a passenger service and perhaps intermodal freight to Asmara
@@Isochest There is simply no funds available in Eritrea for investment in any infrastructure .... Andy
It started with 2 coaches and ended with 1. Where did it shed the second one? Great video btw
You'll notice that there are no local passengers on board after the second coach disappeared. I have to confess that the passengers were only there for our photographic purposes! After they got off, one coach was shunted into a siding for the rest of the day ....... Andy
❤️🥰🇪🇷
Glad you liked the video .... Andy
Is it new?
As it says in the title - December 2010 ....... Andy
it takes 2 days from Massawa to asmara ?
They were taking their time so that we could get photos and video of the journey - Andy
It takes maximum 4-5 hours,
Interesting. What kind of fuel, oil or coal? Looks like oil. No tenders. Just side tanks.👍✌️😊🙏🏼🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
They're coal fired. The coal is kept in a bunker within the cab of the loco ..... Andy
