- In December 2010, we were in Eritrea to witness a first - two shipping containers being moved by rail from the port of Massawa to the capital city of Asmara. The containers were holding machine tools donated by the Danish State Railways to the Eritrean Railways.
In this part, Day One, we see the containers being unloaded at Massawa port and the train being prepared for its journey onward through the mountains to Asmara.
Motive power is provided by double headed 0-4-4-0 Mallets numbers 442-54 and 442-55.
Day Two can be found at - • Eritrea - Double Heade...
Fantástic , wonderful , amazing , this place is a paradise. Thank you , Very thanks , my friends to share😍😘 Renato RS 🇧🇷 Brasil
I must say that I really enjoyed my visit to Eritrea. It's a poor country but everyone there is just so happy and friendly. Of course, the railway is amazing too - well worth a visit ..... Andy
I like the shot at about 4.45 where at first glance the loco appears to veer off into a patch of grass!
Yes. It catches you by surprise doesn't it? The driver had to take a run at that curve. It has a steep gradient and hadn't been used for a while so was quite slippery ..... Andy
Grazie Sara un nostalgia per te vedere la tua terra Amen
What a beautiful loco
They're still clinging on to steamability! ... Andy
I am eritrea thanks
I hope one day everything will be OK my lovely country Eritrea really i miss you thank you so much for shearing sister and brother
Eritrea is a lovely country. Not rich but everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Money counts for nothing - this is what is important ....... Andy

... Nice shots by the Way...
Cheers! Thank you very much ..... Andy
Very nice job 👍
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video ..... Andy
Never thought I'd see a Narrow Gauge? steam pulled intermodal....
Well, this certainly was a one off ....... Andy
Two steam locomotives to more two containers and some passengers. I don’t think the economics add up, but isn’t it lovely :))
There are some very steep gradients on the line. Also labour is cheap and the lovely people in Eritrea really enjoy operating these locomotives. I think they'd put three locos on there if they thought it looked realistic!! ...... Andy
Brilliant footage as usual! What has happened to these unique machines?
They're still there and operate trains for groups of enthusiasts on odd occasions. Eritrea is a poor country and the railway is a useful source of foreign currency ...... Andy
Eritrea is not poot
Does Eritrean Railways have Diesel rolling stock?
They have a diesel railcar and a few converted road vehicles. However, at the moment, nothing is operational on Eritrean Railways ..... Andy
What is the name of the hotel at 2:45 ? Thx.
It's the Savoiya Hotel in Massawa - a great place to view the harbour, although there aren't usually steam trains to watch too! ....... Andy
❤️Channel 😁
I guess from that you're enjoying my videos - I hope so! ..... Andy
Where were the engines made?👍✌️😊🙏🏼🚂🚂🚂
Italy
They're built by Ansaldo of Genoa in Italy in 1938 ....... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam They look german, maybe they copied an O&K or Kraus Maffei Deseign?
@@raymondleggs5508 The design was originally Swiss and these Italian versions are very similar to some that were built in Switzerland ....... Andy
It is a poor country but full of lovely people. They are very welcoming and friendly at all times. ........ Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam me gustan los países pobres, en ellos la personas son mas ingeniosas que la de los países ricos. además aprecian cosas que en otros lugares las ignoran.
@@fernandoferrari43 Eso es todo cierto. That's all true ........ Andy
I built on of theses locomotives out of legos
Really? That would have been an interesting project! ...... Andy
Nice but not for this era. Competitive modern industrial economy needs much more than a train with two container moving capacity. That can be put on simple truck.
I think you're watching the wrong videos KNW !! This is a remarkable piece of rail history that survives in Eritrea. This was a donation of machine tools for the Eritrean State Railways. Using a "simple" truck, as you put it would have defeated the object. This exercise proved the viability of the railway in this very poor country where there are hardly any trucks to be had ......
